Blessings to each of you as we step into the month of February with all its activities. We begin
lent Wednesday, February 10th. We have our youth sponsored Sweetheart Breakfast February
14th and our First Communion classes.
Our Lenten theme this year is: The Many Wonders of Heaven Are Ours Through the
Payment of Jesus Christ. We can live our lives in more victory, joy and peace when we can live
lifes journey each day with the end in mind. Every human being at some point on lifes
journey has an appointment with death. There is no getting out of it. But for the believer who
is saved from the destructive powers of sin, death and hell by faith in Jesus Christ, physical
death becomes a doorway into our wonderful forever home in heaven. We will explore some of
these wonders this Lenten journey of 2016. Jesus said in Luke 10:19-21:
Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents
and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy,
and nothing shall hurt you. Nevertheless, do not rejoice
in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice
that your names are written in heaven.
Enjoy the journey of life in Gods forever family through Jesus Christ, but do it with one eye on
our wonderful home awaiting us in Heaven.

As we prepare for changes at Shepherd of the Pines this year, let us remember that our Lord
Jesus Christ is with us always. He is here to guide and help us. I will be retiring from Pastoral
Ministry and as Pastor here at Shepherd of the Pines Lutheran Church June 30 th of this year. It
has been a wonderful journey with you all. I have experienced Gods presence with us over the
years, guiding and providing for us. His presence has been upon this church from its
beginning and will continue to be upon this church through the changes and into the future.
As you leave the church through the front doors, look up at the picture of Jesus with His
hands upon the church building, and let it remind you to pray for this church, for the call
committee, and that the Lord will guide you to the right Pastor who will lead you into the next
phase of Gods plan for you. Between now and June 30 th lets enjoy the journey together as
we follow our Lords leading. Blessings and Love,

RECLAIMING OUR NATIONS BIBLICAL HERITAGE

Proverbs 29:2 gives us a guiding principle about taking responsibility in the arena of politics and
government.
When the godly are in authority, the people rejoice, but when the wicked are in power, they groan.(NLT)
Someone shared this quote that was on Facebook: If you are honest, intelligent, living citizen and think
politics have nothing to do with youyou are part of the problem. This seems to be obvious, but I
sometimes hear well-meaning Christians say, Oh, I just dont get involved in politics. The only real answer
to peoples problems is Jesus. This is, true. But government matters, and as rotten as it is, politics matters,
because when the wicked rule, the people groan. Under good leaders, we can rejoice, and we can lead
peaceful and quiet lives or at least be led by the righteous in time of war; under bad leaders, peace and
quiet are hard to come by, and strife is our constant companion even in peace.
This is obvious by a quick glance around the globe. When governments are corrupt, when they are
totalitarian, the people struggle under governments oppressive weight. The Bible is not only concerned with
our spiritual condition, but our mental and physical conditions as well. As Christians, we must strive
politically for a government that allows people to live in peace and that requires citizens and righteous
leaders.
Where do we start in order to have righteous citizens and righteous leaders in our government? We
start by applying with the help of God, the Bible and its moral principles to our lives and by voting for leaders
who hold to these Biblically moral principles. In last months Reclaiming Our nations Biblical Heritage article,
I asked the question, What criteria do we use for choosing which candidates to vote for? As Bible
believing Christians, we believe all life is sacred and one key Biblical principle is that we are pro-life. If a
candidate is not pro-life then in good conscience, as Bible believing Christians, we cannot vote for such a
candidate.
Question: Is it possible to be a Christian and pro-choice at the same time?
For the sake of clarity, lets define the terms pro-choice and Pro-life. Pro-choice is the belief that
a woman should have the legal right to abort her unborn child at any point in the pregnancy. Pro-choice
advocates believe abortion is a personal decision and should not be limited by the government or anyone
else. Pro-life is the belief that every human life is sacred and no one, including the mother, as the right to
end an innocent life. Pro-life advocates hold the view that life from the moment of conception should be
protected.
So, should a Christian be pro-choice or pro-life? A Christian, according to the Bible, is someone who
has accepted Gods offer of forgiveness through Jesus death and resurrection. Salvation is a gift of God
through faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ (John 3:16-18; Ephesians 2:8-9; Acts 16:31; Romans 10:9).
What we believe about other things is a matter of growth, not of salvation. However, 2 Corinthians 5:17
says, If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are
become new. When we give our lives to Christ, He begins to change us: our way of thinking and our way of
behaving (see Isaiah 55:7). Our bodies become the temple of the Holy spirit (1 Corinthians 3:16; 6:19). Our
minds are renewed through the truth of Gods Word (Romans 12:1-2). Our attitudes, perspectives, and
behaviors gradually change to be more like those of Christ (Romans 8:29; Galatians 5:22). This
transformation doesnt happen overnight. Many Christians are still what the apostle Paul called, carnal (1
Corinthians 3:1-3; Romans 8:6). Carnal Christians trust in Jesus for salvation, but they think, act, and react

like the world. Often, they are new to the faith or simply have not allowed the Holy Spirit free access to every
area of their souls. They are trying to live the Christian life in their own strength, while still being heavily
influenced by the worlds way of thinking.
The carnal mind has not been fully renewed by the Word of God and still seeks compromise with the world
(James 4:4). Carnal Christians allow the persuasive viewpoints of the ungodly to sway their opinions on
many things, including abortion. Spiritual growth requires us to shed our old ways of thinking as we become
more like Christ. We begin to see things the way God does, and the closer to Him we become, the less we
agree with the worlds system (Psalm 1:1-2).
Pro-choice advocates state that the Bible does not address abortion, so the decision should be the
individuals. While it is true that the term abortion does not appear in the Bible, the principles about the
value of life are there. In Exodus 21:22-23, God wrote into His Law protection for the unborn. If a pregnant
woman was injured, causing her to lose her child, then the one who caused the injury was to be executed:
a life for a life. The phrase life for a life says a lot. God considers the life of the unborn just as valuable
as that of a grown man.
God said to Jeremiah, Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I
consecrated you (Jeremiah 1:5). It was God who created him for a specific purpose. Psalm 139:13-16 gives
us the clearest picture of Gods viewpoint on the unborn. David writes,
For You formed my inward parts; You wove me in my mothers womb. I will give thanks to You, for I am
fearfully and wonderfully madeMy frame was not hidden from You, when I was made in secretYour eyes
have seen my unformed substance; and in Your book were all written the days that were ordained for me,
when as yet there was not one of them.
The Bible is clear that all human life is created by God for His purpose and His pleasure (Colossians
1:16), and a Christian who truly wants to know the heart of God must align his or her viewpoint with Gods.
When we start justifying evil according to our understanding, we dilute the truth of Gods Word. When we
rename adultery an affair, homosexuality an alternative lifestyle, and murder of the unborn a choice, we
are headed for serious trouble. We cannot redefine what it means to follow Christ. Jesus said we must first
deny ourselves (Matthew 16:24; Luke 9:23). Part of denying ourselves is letting go of comfortable lies the
world has fed us. We have to let go of our own understanding and allow God to change us (Proverbs 3:5-6).
Some pro-choice advocates argue that they are not pro-abortion. They say they hate abortion, but
support a womans right to choose. This makes as much sense as saying that you personally hate rape, but
support a mans right to commit it. The rhetoric sounds nicethe mention of choice makes it more
appealingbut underneath is a direct conflict with Gods viewpoint in Scripture.
The Bible is clear: since God is the Creator of human life, only He can determine who lives or dies.
And every person who claims the name of Christ has the obligation to make certain his or her views line up
with Gods Word. Is it possible for a born-again Christian to be pro-choice? Yes. Is it likely that such a
person will remain pro-choice? Not if her or she is allowing Gods Word to transform and renew his or her
mind. (Romans 12:2).
Blessings on the Journey,
Pastor Bob

If we'd like to keep the

tradition of SOTP Lenten Soup

flourishing, we will need
VOLUNTEERS to fill the remaining dates
through Lent: February 17th, 24th, March 2nd, 9th

the church lobby. We need a Serving Leader

initiate the set-up & clean-up. This would be a
great opportunity for small bible study groups,
friends, families or ministries to serve their
brothers & sisters together, and the donations
collected from your night of serving can go to the
ministry of your nomination. Each week we will
need 3 volunteers to make a crock-pot of soup
each, 3 volunteers to bring the ingredients
needed for sandwiches to feed a crowd of 30-50
people and one of those volunteers to be Serving
Leader. The Wednesday Soup Supper's will
otherwise not continue during the Lenten season
this year after Ash Wednesday, without
volunteers! See the sign up sheet in the church
lobby for more details! Thank You!!

We have been praying for our church

Greetings all!
Here we are in the month of Love when I
write this and who to better love us, than our
Lord Jesus Christ! Oh what a blessing! The
small group team is off and running for 2016
and we begin by planning with VBS! Yes...VBS!
We are so excited to say that we have been
cave exploring and the children will be doing
the same this June with "Cave Quest" VBS
2016! Mark your calendars for the 5th- 9th of
June, that is the first Sunday thru Thursday of
June for a cave exploring fun time! We are
looking forward to seeing lots of children loving
the Lord!
We shall also be planning for the Easter

this year! Please watch for the sign-up sheets

in the narthex for helping hands, foods, and
prayer above all!
We have 4 Triad groups going on right now,
a Wednesday morning study with Lois
Perleberg and a Monday night study. If God is
nudging your heart to get into His word, please
talk to me and we can set up chat time to begin
a small group. Pastor Bob is also doing a study
between services! I pray that the pause in your
week or the pause you choose to take is filled
with being in HIs Word. It is a tough journey
this world throws at us and we can feel despair
rather easily, God is the healer of hearts! He is,
and has given us, a tool to help on this journey
called scripture. I pray that when you feel the
squeeze of this world upon you or your day,
that you go and find a peace that is beyond no
other through our Lords words.
Do have a blessed month filled with love and
preparing for the Lord's ultimate gift of
love....giving His one and only Son for you and
I, so that we may have eternal rest! May God
shine on you and may you feel His love!

Shepherd of the Pines Mission Statement: Connecting People to GodTo Othersand To Service
The purpose of this congregation is mandated for us by our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, as found in the words of the Great
Commission (Matthew 28), namely first of all to Go. To leave our walls of refuge, going into all the world, comprising of our families
and neighbors. We plan to achieve our purpose by identifying persons with whom we are particularly well-equipped to serve and reach
with the challenge of becoming Disciples of Christ.
Second, to Make Disciples or in the words of St Paul, To equip the saints (Ephesians 4:12). This is to be understood as helping
people to live the Christian life here on earth. Preparing and encouraging young and old alike to find and to use their God given gifts
and abilities for the extension of His Kingdom, and to grow in fervent love for God and for others.
Thirdly, to Baptize as commanded by Jesus Himself. As God reaches down to mankind with His means of grace, He would have us
baptize His people, bringing them into His family and Kingdom, granting to them life, forgiveness of sins, and eternal salvation.
And lastly, to continue steadfast in His Word, Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you. A continued
zeal for the study of His Word, the Bible, is necessary for the growth of any Christian congregation. Thus, the Word of God will be
taught and studied in full measure and His Word shall be the rule and norm of this congregations faith and life.
To that end, our every effort and energy will be used in motivating, training, and putting to use our time, and talents and treasures
to Make Disciples.
