Inspiration
Imran Khan had always been very close to his mother
and had enjoyed her support. In 1984, Imran's mother,
Shaukat Khanum became ill to such an extent that once
properly diagnosed, she was almost inoperable. She
suffered from cancer, which was known to be a rich
man's disease in Pakistan in that only well off people
could afford to fly to Europe to receive the treatment.
Inspite of flying to Cromwell Hospital in 1984, Shaukat Khanum died the following year in
acute pain. Imran was by her side during her last days when she suffered terribly. He felt her
pain but could not do anything for her. Imran's career was thus determined. When he retired
from cricket he would build the first cancer hospital in Pakistan in honor of his mother.

History
Imran Khan made a nation-wide appeal for the collection of funds from a match between
Pakistan and India on November 10, 1989 at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore which raised Rs.
2,902,600. This was followed by a series of more than 50 successful fund raisers held
throughout the world. Pakistan's win under Imran's captaincy in the 1992 cricket world cup in
Melbourne helped fundraising efforts. He was able to collect one and a half million pounds in
just six weeks after the World Cup when the same amount had taken 2 years to collect earlier.
He donated his entire prize money of 85,000 pounds for the project. In 1994 when the project
required more financing for the ongoing construction, Imran Khan launched a mass contact
campaign in which he toured 27 cities in the country and collected Rs. 120 million. During
the entire campaign for the construction of the hospital, over a million individual donors from
ordinary citizens to the rich and famous pitched in. Everything from cash to jewelry and
valuables was donated.

Communication
For the communication purpose three major types of servers are use:
1. Microsoft DNS (domain name system) server 2003:
DNS is use for connecting the system to the internet. PTCL is the organizations ISP with a
bandwidth of more than 24MB
2. Microsoft ISA (internet security & acceleration) server
Act as firewall to block malicious activity and helps the organization to ensure the safety of
sensitive information system. Provides protection against spam and viruses.
3. Microsoft exchange server
Microsoft exchange server is used for exchanging e-mails, calendaring, contacts and tasks.
Different kinds of communication:
1. The organization maintains a website for its patient and donors
2. Patients can check lab reports online by using their MR(medical record number)
assigned to them
3. Regular donors have specific user names and passwords to log on to the organization
portal.
4. The portal is also used by various labs & donation centers scattered across country to
update the records in the database.

Interpersonal relationship
Interpersonal relations at shaukat khanum serve a critical role in the development and
maintenance of trust and positive feelings in a farm organization. Although the quality of
interpersonal relationships alone is not enough to produce worker productivity, it can
significantly contribute to it.
Interpersonal relationship among employees is very good and pleasant .they trust each other
and respect their colleagues.staff in the hospital shares their feelings with each other .the

environment of the each department is just like a family .they celebrate the happiness of their
co workers and share their sorrows and cares the emotions and feelings of each other. This
type of environment keeps them satisfied and enthusiastic with their jobs, also enhance the
productivity of technical and para medical staff. In fulfilling responsibilities, supervisors
strike the right note in their interpersonal relations with workers. New supervisors, especially
those who have moved up through the ranks, are often counseled to keep a healthy distance
from workers. Supervisors are approachable and friendly, yet fair and firm. A good sense of
humor also helps.

Ethics
Ethics is about behavior. In the face of dilemma, it is about doing the right thing. Ethical
managerial leaders and their people take the right and good path when they come to the
ethical choice points .Senior management and direct supervisors play a large part in
influencing ethical behavior in the workplace.
In order to encourage high ethical standards within the SKMCH, they first have to provide
an environment that is conducive to ethical behavior, says Dr Faisal sultan, chairman of the
board at SKMCH. However, management and leadership have a huge responsibility in
setting examples for their organizations and living the values they preach if they want to
sustain a culture of ethics.
In SKMCH the top two factors contributing to the promotion of an ethical workplace are the
behavior of management and direct HODs, as chosen by 42% and 36% of respondents,
respectively. There is, however, a strong relationship between ethical actions at work and a
healthy level of work-life balance. In fact, 91% of these employees agreed that workers are
more likely to behave ethically at the office when they have a good work-life balance.
Clinical ethics is, traditionally, oriented toward the individual doctor and her patient, focusing
on their rights, their actions, and how they justify their treatment decisions. Evolving as the

ethics of this particular professional group, it assumes that there are two main participants
onlythe doctor and the patientand that they decide jointly and in private on the course of
medical treatment. Problems that arise therefore in the doctor/patient relationship are solved
on a case by case basis, although occasionally with the help of an ethics consultation service.
Because of its focus on individual agency, clinical ethics fails to recognize the effects of the
organizational culture in which health care is delivered, which include the effects of that
cultures informal rules, and, more importantly, the effects of its beliefs and assumptions
regarding ethical conduct and ethical decision making. Recent research in organization theory
and business ethics has focused on trying to understand the factors influencing ethical
conduct in organizations. Issues that promote unethical behavior are ambiguity among staff
about organizational priorities, the lack of forums for discussing the ethical dimension of
behaviors, and hierarchical power structures that prevent horizontal relationships. Unethical
conduct can be reduced by leaders who encourage and model ethical behavior, reward ethical
conduct and discipline unethical conduct, and emphasize treating employees fairly rather than
strictly obeying authority.2,3 Organizational ethics suggest processes that promote the
organizational culture that supports ethical decision making and ethical behavior. Less
attention has been given, however, to the question: how should healthcare organizations deal
with moral disagreement about medical practices?

Performance appraisal
Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (SKMCH&RC) achieved
yet another milestone by bagging the prestigious Management Association of Pakistan
(MAP)s 27th Corporate Excellence Award. The MAP Corporate Excellence Awards are
considered to be the Oscar of Management awards in Pakistan and are one of the most sought
after accolades in Pakistan corporate space. Tariq Azam, Director Marketing and Resource
Development, on behalf of SKMCH&RC, received the award from Dean and Director,

Institute of Business Administration and former governor State Bank of Pakistan, Dr. Ishrat
Hussain, who was the chief guest on the occasion. The event held at the Beach Luxury Hotel,
Karachi, drew business leaders and print and electronic media representative.
Similarly SKMCH praises the performance of their employees by giving them annual
promotion and raise in their salary. A list of performance is prepared by the HOD every year
and sends to the CEO of the hospital. There is a promotion for technical staff and salary raise
for the medical staff. Promotion of doctors depends upon their exams and researches. This
performance appraisal system increases their job performance, satisfaction and job
involvement.

Research Centre [SKMCH&RC], Dr. Faisal Sultan, while talking to a private

said some moments in my life are truly unforgettable.

The time that I spent here at Shaukat Khanum was one of them. It was a
wonderful experience here with the little angels. I was a little nervous the
first day that how would I be able to bring smile on these angelic faces
when they are suffering from such pain. But then I realized that once you
become a part of them and get in their shoesits not difficult to see that
glimpse of happiness and joy!!! I learnt great things during this
internshipthat you should never lose hope! It felt great to be able to
make a difference in someones lifeAnd today Im proud of myself that I
made such a good decision to be a part of ShaukatKhanum! It was
absolutely awesome to be here and my last day of internship was totally
touching and I felt really sad that I was leaving.
Ahmed Hassan Khan The time I spent here was really special. It made
me realize the countless blessings of God bestowed upon me. I also
realized that the greatest blessing of all these is health, and our less
fortunate people who dont have it need our help and therefore it is our
responsibility to help these people out in any way possible, financially,
emotionally etc. The efficiency and commitment of the staff also
impressed me greatly. This is a world class institution and I am honored to
have had the chance to work in it .This really was an awesome
experience.
Ahsan Abdullah Tipu The time I spent here was really special for me
and all the memories will remain a part of my life forever. I have also
experienced a very soothing satisfaction by helping, taking care of and
playing with the children, which was really an awesome experience. I

an organization/hospital which is so organized, patients are treated really
well.

Faryal Cheema The time I spent here was so much better than any other
internship Ive been to. Ill never forget it and Ill try my best to come back
again, maybe as a doctor.
Faryal Murtaza Cheema My first day was unfortunately, not so good. I
had no idea where I was supposed to go, and it ended up in me having to
go home and come again the next day. When I first met the kids, I didnt
know what to do. How can one pretend to be happy and cheer kids up who

you dont know will make it through the next year? But that is exactly
what I learned at ShaukatKhanum, and it is this, what made me stronger
and what I will always remember and thank this place for. It was amazing
how these kids could continue to smile, continue to do what we did when
we were small, except for the difference in our conditions. In fact they
were more enthusiastic, more optimistic on the outlook of life, and sang
merrier songs than I ever knew myself. Their songs continue to ring in my
head as I write this, and I hope I will one day be able to understand the
meaning of those melodious Pashto lyrics.
Fatima Khan

The experience was far better than what I expected. The

love children gave here was far more than I expected. I am certainly going
to miss them all.
Fatima Noor Aftaab

My experience at SKM was a memorable one

Fatima Riaz It was simply an outstanding experience. It made me thank
God for his countless blessings upon me a very memorable experience.
Fatima Tanvir Learn to be happy at whatever you have, whatever you
are, This is one of the things that I learned during my experience at SKMH
& RC, At first, coming at SKMH, I had only a vogue impression of the pains
and sufferings of cancer patients. But now, being so close to them, to
actually share in their everyday life. To witness their pain, and their
relatives sacrifices to be with them.It was truly moving. For now all I am
able to say is that I am definitely not the same person as I was when I
walked through the gates of SKMH on the first day of my internship. I

played ludo, solved jigsaw puzzles, put stickers and told storiesall of it to
bring a smile to the face of the sick children. I spent unforgettable, sweet
moments with these children, and I recommend others to do the
same.Allah Hafiz. It was great being here.
Fatima Tanvir

The time I spent here was absolute true unforgettable

pleasure. It also made me realize the bounties and naimtain that we have
and we take for granted. Learn to be happy at whatever we have,
whoever we are. I hope these moments come again and our memories
are renewed. Rock on SKMCH.
Haider Ali Cheema It was a great experience. I learnt a lot from here. I
have to say is that I will miss this place this place gave me the worth that
how much I am blessed from God.

made me realize the blessing of Allah bestowed upon me and the need for
me to pay him back through my deeds. The kids here are really
understanding and the whole idea or concept of this program is being
totally achieved. Developed strong feelings for the children as for the love
they honored me by. I became their favorite intern as I would make them
play video games. It was nice being loved! The entire experience
definitely helped me become a better person and made me realize the
responsibilities upon my shoulders-to help mankind!

Hajra Rehman living is usual but living for someone else is something
not usual. This summer I came to know about ShaukatKhanum internship
program. As I am a medical student so I applied here. It was my first time
that I applied for internship anywhere so I didnt have an idea about
working as an internee. But after working in ShaukatKhanum Hospital I
really feel that I have done something commendable in my life. It was
really a great experience working here. I was in chemo department where
patients usually come on appointments. I felt so glad to interact with
cancer patients. I felt honored to serve these children who were suffering
from severe pain. During my internship period I put all my will to make
them happy. We cant imagine how painful situation they are facing but I
just tried to lessen their pain by making that time special for them.your
only smile can change the pottery, of someone elses life This was the
wonderful experience I had in my life. I have learnt a lot from them.
ShaukatKhanum hospital is doing an outstanding job for patients. I just
love these children. I hope that soon I get to serve these patients as a
volunteer but also as a doctor (inshallah). May God always hover upon

Khadija Afzal I was all so excited to hear about the ShaukatKhanum
internship and forced my career advisor to get us in here, and at last the
day arrived when we started this volunteer work. The first day with the
patients was a lot depressing. It was like a bolt from the blue, seeing so
many young children suffering, and their poor families. But when we got
used to it and came here every day to brighten the days of the cancer
patients. It was touching too see how the patients got happy by seeing
just a balloon or a flower (made of tissue paper). I

want to salute Sir

Imran Khan for making such a beautiful hospital, with centrally airconditioned ,neat corridors .The exciting and colorful Gift-shop idea which
fantasizes the young ones and makes their suffering days here, all so
enthusiastic and they actually look forward to it. I had a great time here
and I would love to come back here, to brighten up more lives!! And
thanks to our coordinator Zahra for being so cooperative and making this
more fun.

week to discuss the ways of improving quality, efficiency and the work environment.
2. Self Managed Work Teams:
It is a group of 10-15 people who take on responsibilities of their former supervisors.

3. Cross Functional Teams:

Employees from the same hierarchical level, but from different work areas who come
