Hazardous code :
In accordance with definition of categories of hazardous substances in the Health and Safety Statutory Instruments "Classification, Packaging
and Labelling of Dangerous Substances Regulations 1984" Schedule I. (U. K.), with the addition of a non-hazardous category and non-life
supporting category.
Hazard Code

Definition

A - Non-hazardous

A substance which does not present toxicity, flammability or other hazards when in the plant or on release to the atmosphere.

B - Non-life supporting

A substance which while non-toxic in lower concentrations does not support life at high concentrations.

C - Corrosive

A substance which may, on contact with living tissues, destroy them, or which gives a rapid rate of attack on normal
materials of construction.

D - Harmful

A substance which if it is inhaled or ingested or it penetrates the skin, may involve limited health risks.

E - Toxic

A substance which if it is inhaled or ingested or it penetrates the skin, may involve serious, acute or chronic health
risks and even death.

F - Very Toxic

A substance which if it is inhaled or ingested or it penetrates the skin, may involve extremely serious, acute
or chronic health risks and even death.

COLUMN
Hazard Code

Definition

G - Flammable

A substance which is a liquid having flash point equal to or greater than 23 C and less than or equal to 65 C.

H - Highly Flammable

A substance which:
i) may become hot and finally catch fire in contact with air at ambient temperature without any application of energy.
ii) may readily catch fire after brief contact with a source of ignition and which continues to burn or to be consumed
after removal of the source of ignition.
iii) is gaseous and flammable in air at normal pressure.
iv) in contact with water or damp air, evolves highly flammable gases in dangerous quantities.
v) is a liquid having a flash point below 23 C.

I - Extremely Flammable

A liquid having flash point of less than 0 C and a boiling point of less than or equal to 35 C.

J - Irritant

A non-corrosive substance which, through immediate, prolonged or repeated contact with the skin or
mucous membrane, can cause inflammation.

K - Oxidizing

A substance which gives rise to highly exothermic reaction when in contact with other substances, particularly
flammable substances.

L - Explosive

A substance which may explode under the effect of flame or which is more sensitive to shocks than dinitro bnzene.

10

Indicate V for vapours ; L for liquids ; L/V for mixed phases or make special reference to other conditions (e.g. slurries, etc.) S / L = Slurry.

12

NO = Normal Operation, defined as coincident pressure and temperature conditions prevailing for the majority of the plant life (Insulation
related to the temperature stated here).

13

MO = Maximum Operation, defined as the maximum sustained conditions (material selection is usually related to the temperature stated here).
SV = Relief Valve Set Pressure and coincident temperature (minimum basis for 'Design P and T').
PSO = Pump Shut-Off Head (at reduced or no flow) where no pressure relief is provided.
XT ( ) = Transient conditions which can occur for the total period of time shown in parenthesis, in hours, during an operational
year (abbreviated to T10 or T50, as appropriate, if Contract Piping Code incorporates ANSI B31.3).

FORM NO. : P067PSS.XLS (01:2009)

RT = Relief valve Blowing conditions, taken as allowing maximum pressure/stress relaxation permitted by Contract Piping Code.
14

Coincident pressures and temperatures corresponding to the process cases quoted under column 13 (the highest temperature quoted
under column 13 is used for calculating thermal stresses).

15

For latest issue of listed drawing numbers see Document Index.
