Young Audiences, measured by virtually any
criterion, is a remarkably successful enterprise.
The largest organization in the arts-in-education
field, its 31 affiliates provide nearly 87,000
programs to 7,000,000 children each year.

Yet we are currently examining every Because the environment – from the

world. By that he means a world in which
hundreds of millions of people in places

The flat world is overflowing with students who can
do the routine work of production, and do it much
more cheaply than Americans can. How can our
young people and, by extension, our nation succeed
in such an environment? The answer is through

One of our signature programs for cultivating creative

experiencing A4L Lessons showed a consistent
pattern of statistically significant improvement on
literacy assessments related to state and local

than comparison groups receiving only their
standard literacy curriculum; and markedly greater
interest and engagement in A4L Lessons than in
their regular literacy curriculum.

Another major success for Young Audiences this
year has been the burgeoning popularity of the
MetLife Dance for Life residencies. This year,

the program’s goal of inspiring young people to
experience the joy and physical benefits of dance.
In addition, several affiliates have linked Dance for

integration with the Arts for Learning program.

Finally, as we mentioned above, Young Audiences has
been deeply involved in the process of pursuing
creative reinvention within our organization. It began
last year when we engaged the consulting firm
of WolfBrown to survey our network. WolfBrown

executive directors and board members, and Young
Audiences constituents to generate its
findings in a Use and Needs Study.

> The relative merits of different growth models,
such as merging with other organizations or
instituting a national certification for artists;

greater emphasis on creativity;
> New approaches to fund raising, marketing
and other revenue streams.

This process is both exciting and daunting.
It is not comfortable to question the way we do
things or to contemplate far-reaching changes.
But that is precisely the artistic, as well as the
truly scientific, way forward. “Innovation is

We will continue to question, probe, test,

success of the children who depend on us.

LETTER FROM THE CHAIRMAN, PRESIDENT, AND EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

It has been our privilege to continue serving Young Audiences Arts for Learning in its 56th
year. In 2008, seven million children across the country benefited from arts-in-education
