Professional student
What is a professional student? Your full-time job is a being a student
Currently, your profession is a student
Being a good student is hard work and requires a significant amount of
time and effort
A formula for figuring out how many hours to spend outside of class on
studying and assignments is (Number of credit hours) X (3) = number of
hours/week. Using this formula, you can expect to spend 12 hours per
week outside of class (and lab) on studying and assignments for MGQ201;
this does NOT include attending your lab
Time Management
Be realistic about how much time it will take you to complete
assignments and to study; use the formula provided
Using this formula, a 12 credit hour courseload will require close to 40
hours of work per week outside of class.

Note-taking
Following along with the PowerPoint or printing out class notes is NOT
the same as note-taking.
Note-taking involves processing information IN YOUR OWN WORDS,
going back and re-reading notes from class, even re-writing notes.

Take control of your environment

Dedicate space to where you will study and perform academic
activities.
Quiet, free of distractions,
Customize your learning experience
Seek out external guides and practice
YouTube, Khan Academy, MIT Open CourseWare, EdX

Practice, practice, practice

This element is built into the course in the form of mastery learning;
you have to practice the problems and have infinite attempts to
master the material via the homework assignments

Be patient with yourself and have high expectations

If you think you are bad in a certain subject, you are setting yourself
up for failure. Set yourself up for success; you are fully competent and
can learn anything, given the right resources.
Learning anything takes a lot of time

MGQ201
Introduction to Statistics and Computing
There are two components to MGQ201: computing and statistics

Computing
Computing is the use of a computer to process information or data.

Hardware: physical component of a computer

Monitor, keyboard, video card
PC vs. Mac
Software programs or applications that run on a computer
In MGQ201, we focus on one type of software: Microsoft Office.
Storage and Memory
Byte: a unit of digital information/memory (usually equivalent to 8 bits
of binary information)
Binary code
Computing often overlaps with the term information technology (IT) and the
internet
Information technology is the use of computer systems for storing,
