What is Self-Confidence

1. Anxiety keeps you on your toes

Many people fear anxiety because they feel that if they are stressed, it will deteriorate their
health. However, it is not true that anxiety harms an individuals health; it depends on the
level of anxiety.
Facing sufficient anxiety is normal and is important to keep you on your toes. However, too
much anxiety or too little anxiety can harm your body. If you face too much anxiety in life,
chances are that you will get stressed, which will lead to anxiety disorder and depression. Too
much anxiety will prevent you from thinking clearly and it will have a negative impact on your
mental and physical health.
On the other hand, too little or no anxiety in life will make you dull. Without challenges and
excitement in life, there is really nothing to look forward to. This deteriorates the keenness of
the mind.
When does a person become anxious? It is usually during examinations and interviews.
During examinations, your capability and skills are tested. There is fear that you may not
perform to the best of your abilities. This fear is translated into anxiety. It is because of this
anxiety that you will prepare well for an examination.
You will be alert during lessons because you want to excel in your examinations. Similarly,
when you are unsure of the outcome of an interview, you become anxious. You will burn the
midnight oil and prepare yourself for the challenges in an interview room. If examinations
and interviews were easy, you will not feel anxious and then, there will be nothing to work
towards.
There are some people who have social anxiety problems. They are not outspoken and they
fear that they may embarrass themselves in large social gatherings or at public places. When
someone has social anxiety, he will focus on building his confidence level so that he does not
embarrass himself in the public. Similarly, there are many dimensions of anxiety and anxiety
is present in all walks of life.
So, if you feel anxious before a big event, an interview or an examination, remember that it is
a part and parcel of life. Anxiety keeps you on your toes and ensures that you are better
prepared to face the challenges in society. Without anxiety or with too much anxiety, life
becomes unbearable.

2. Success changes you

Everyone works hard to reap the sweet fruits of success. And when they ultimately realize
their goals and dreams, and become successful, they get engulfed in fame and fortune. But
does this change a person?

The answer is both yes and no. There are two facets of our life professional and personal.
When we become successful in life, professionally, we become a different person.
Professional success causes us to think and act differently. We gain management positions
with every step of success. This causes us to take on leadership positions, collaborate with
subordinates, superiors and colleagues more effectively, and leverage our efforts like never
before.
In the professional sphere, success will definitely change you because you will get more
responsibilities and you will have to prove to the management that you are capable of taking
on more challenging roles. When you become successful, you will become confident and you
will set goals that were previously unthought-of. With every step of success, we want to climb
higher to even greater heights.
In the personal sphere, people tend to have fears around success and its negative impact on
our lives. There is fear that success may cause them to lose the lifestyle to which they might
become accustomed. There is fear that one may become materialistic and superficial once
success gets a persons head. On the other hand, some people become more modest and caring
when they become successful.
So far, we have discussed scenarios in which success changes the life of an individual and the
people next to him. There are situations in which success does not have an impact on ones
personal life. There are many people who maintain a balance between professional life and
personal life.
They do not allow success in the professional sphere to affect them when interacting with
family members. These are the people who can distinguish professional success from personal
success. They do understand that the success reaped at work has nothing to do with their
inbuilt personality.
So, it is really the personality of a person that determines if success will change him or not.
Some people become obsessed with success that they are unable to separate professional
success from personal life. These are the people who end up becoming over confident and
arrogant. So, to ensure that success does not impact your life in a negative manner, it is
important to keep professional and personal spheres of life separate.

3. Failures make you wiser

People become wiser and stronger after learning from their mistakes. Although people hate to
lose and fail because it is indicative of their incapability, failure is a blessing in disguise. Why
is failure more powerful than success?
When you are successful, there is nothing to learn from. Success shows that you have certain
capabilities and strengths. On the other hand, failure shows your weaknesses and incapability.
So, to succeed in life, you need to work on your weaknesses and learn from your mistakes.

Oscar Wilde once said, Experience is the name we give to our mistakes. We become more
experienced when we make mistakes. If we dont make any mistakes, what is there to learn?
How can we improve upon our weaknesses? Once you commit a mistake, you will not repeat
that error again. This shows that you have become wiser. Although people get embarrassed
after making a mistake, wise men feel it is nothing to be ashamed of. No one will think less of
you if you commit an error. If you learn from your mistake and move forward in life, you will
be a determined person.
Albert Einstein also said, A person who has never made a mistake has never tried anything
new. It is completely normal to make an error when you are trying something new.
Since it is something that you have never attempted in your life, it is natural to make a minor
mistake. The most important thing is to understand where you went wrong so that you do not
repeat your mistakes. A wise man is someone who learns from his mistakes so that he expands
his horizon to try new things in life.
You are a failure if you dont learn anything from your mistakes. Mistakes are like bridges that
allow the inexperienced to become wise. Try something new today and learn from your
mistakes.
Through learning comes great experience. Once you have ample experience, people will look
up to as you as someone who is wise enough to provide guidance.
Leonard Rubino once said, Show me a person who hasnt made any mistake and I will show
you a person who hasnt done anything.

4. Positive attitude is a winning equation

Winston Churchill, former prime minister of the United Kingdom, once said, Attitude is a
little thing that makes a huge difference. Many people undermine the importance of attitude
in any task and believe that success is the result of hard work alone. This is not true.
In fact, the determination to go forward in life in spite of the challenges and obstacles along
the way is a key determinant of success. Many people, in the face of hardship, become
pessimistic in life and give up on their goals. This ultimately results in failure.
Lizzie Velasquez, who has been labeled the worlds ugliest woman, recently made headlines
with her motivational speech. Despite her illness and being ridiculed by millions around the
world, she stood on her feet and faced the challenges in life. When she was born, the doctors
told her parents that she would never be able to walk, talk or have a normal life. Some people
in the world even told her to put a gun to her head and kill herself.

Despite the discrimination from millions of people and the doctors lack of faith, she struggled
to be a normal human being. And today, at the age of 24, she has accomplished a number of
things that many normal human beings have not been able to do in their lifetime - today, she
is an author and a motivational speaker. Lizzie Velasquez has proven the doctors wrong and
has shown the world that positive attitude can change ones destiny.
In the business world, Bill Gates, Azim Premji, Narayana Murthy, and Sunil Mittal have
proven to the world that apart from hard work and diligence, a positive attitude is an
important ingredient for success. None of the aforementioned businessmen were successful in
their first attempt in spite of the failures and rejections in the industry; they focused on
their goals and worked towards them in an optimistic manner.
In any sector, you will realize that positive attitude is a winning equation. Walt Whitman, an
American poet and a journalist, was right when he said, Keep your face always toward the
sunshine and shadows will fall behind you.
We are bound to face challenges in life because life is not a bed of roses; but if we become
pessimistic in life or are not confident of our abilities, we will be one step closer to failure.
Essentially, success comes to those who believe in themselves and are not afraid of failure.

5. Be the change that you wish to see in the world

Mahatma Gandhi once said, Be the change that you wish to see in the world. In fact, he led
by example and fought for Indias independence a vision that he had of India when the
country was ruled by the British. Instead of complaining or becoming a victim of the British
rule, he followed his heart and dreams and took responsibility for his actions.
Today, we see many people in India complaining about the inefficiencies in the political and
economic systems in the country, and the level of corruption in India but very few people have
the courage to fight for what they believe in and build a country that is free of corruption.
In the last few years, we have seen some promising men and women - Anna Hazare, Arvind
Kejriwal, Narendra Modi, and Kiran Bedi who have dedicated their lives to the betterment
of India. And it is because of these people that today, we are witnessing some positive changes
in the Indian political system.
So, if you wish to see changes in the world, do not wait for people to make those changes but
be proactive and take steps to realize your dreams and goals.
Nelson Mandela, who was inspired by Mahatma Gandhi, fought for the freedom of South
Africas black population from the oppression imposed by the minority government instead of
waiting for changes in his nation.
Barack Obama, the first African American of the United States of America, was absolutely
right in saying that Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other

time. We are the ones weve been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.
Fear and procrastination will get us nowhere if we are committed to making a difference to
the world, we ought to be courageous and proactive. This is the mantra for success.

6. God wants you to be a winner, not a whiner

Joel Osteen, an American preacher, author, televangelist and the Senior Pastor of the
Lakewood Church, is known for his saying, God wants you to be a winner, not a whiner.
It is true that God gave us a place on Earth to improve our strengths, gain knowledge and to
excel at everything we do in short, he placed us on Earth to be winners.
However, most people, instead of facing challenges and emerging victorious, whine all day
long. They are pessimistic in life and view challenges as obstacles that hinder their progress
instead of viewing them as opportunities for growth.
There are six traits that separate winners from whiners winners focus on the present and
the future whereas whiners focus on the past; winners take responsibility whereas whiners
cast blame; winners think whereas whiners react; winners take action whereas whiners either
freeze or sit around; winners lead by example whereas whiners look for validation; and lastly,
winners decide whereas whiners waffle.
To emerge a winner, one has to learn from his mistakes and move on in life instead of
thinking about the past. One will not move forward in life if he simply whines or thinks in a
pessimistic manner. We were not given a place on Earth to be tortured we were placed here
to overcome challenges and this is what we should do.
Life is not a bed of roses but it is not a bed of thorns either. We have to remember that
everyone faces challenges in life and the way we address these challenges and view our goals
in life determine whether we are winners or simply whiners.
Henry Ford, Soichiro Honda, Bill Gates, and Walt Disney did not become successful
overnight; they overcame the challenges in life instead of whining and then emerged
victorious.
We should remember that whining gets us nowhere it only diminishes our self-confidence.
On the other hand, hard work and optimism helps us to move forward in life the way God
intended life to be lived.

7. Life is a challenge meet it

We all know that life is not a bed of roses to gain success in life, we have to overcome
obstacles and challenges that life throws upon us. Life itself is a challenge and to overcome
difficulties, we have to be determined and focused on our goals. Along the way, we may make
mistakes but the important thing in life is to learn from ones mistakes and not repeat them.
Ronald E Osborn, a teacher, a writer, and the first moderator of the Christian Church, once
said,Undertake something that is difficult; it will do you good. Unless you try to
do something beyond what you have already mastered, you will never grow. So,
instead of shying away from challenges or difficulties in life, we ought to face them and learn
the lessons that life intends to teach us.
In India, corruption is widespread and rampant. It is difficult to eradicate corruption in India
but it is not impossible. In 2011, brave and determined individuals, including Anna Hazare
and Arvind Kejriwal, came up with the Draft Jan Lokpal Bill, urging the government to set up
an independent body in India to investigate cases of corruption. Even though their efforts did
not bear fruit immediately, they did not give up. They fought for the clearance of the bill and
finally in February 2014, the Delhi Cabinet cleared the Delhi Lokpal Bill 2014, today, India is
one step closer to becoming a nation that is free of corruption.
Challenges are present in every field and society and we cannot run away from them. We have
to face these challenges and learn invaluable lessons that life has to offer.
Only then will we be able to succeed in life. Instead of viewing challenges as obstacles in life,
we ought to view them as opportunities to become stronger and more confident in life.

8. Communication skills are prerequisite for a job offer

Communication skills are important not only for a job offer but for success in life. Many
people have the misconception that communication is all about sharing your views and the
ability to strike a conversation.
This is not true. Communication is a two-way street where you not only convey your thoughts
and ideas to another individual but you also understand the views of others. This is extremely
important in a workplace where the success of an organisation is dependent on the interaction
among the employees and their ability to work together on various tasks. This is the reason
why employers stress the importance of communication skills and ensure that candidates
whom they are employing have strong communication skills.
A person with strong communication skills is able to delegate work to his subordinates and
ensure that projects are running smoothly. In addition, trust and rapport increase with
communication and this enhances the productivity of an organisation.

Rollo May, an American existential psychologist, once said, Communication leads to

community, that is, to understanding, intimacy and mutual valuing. This is completely true.
Microsoft, Infosys, Samsung, and Apple have managed to make it to the list of successful
companies because of their leaders, who are effective communicators.
These leaders communicate the vision and mission of the organisation to their employees and
ensure that the tasks are in line with the goals of the organisation. Effective communicators
also ensure that the voices of the employees are heard. To be an effective communicator, you
should be a good listener and understand the requirements of the clients and the problems of
the employees.
Students who graduate with an MBA degree will eventually move into leadership positions,
where communication skills are extremely important. This is the reason why communication
skills are prerequisite for a job offer. However, it would be incorrect to say that
communication skills are the only prerequisite for a job offer.
To secure a job, you need to have an MBA degree from a reputed college or university, be
academically bright, possess leadership skills and of course, good communication skills. And
it is the candidate who is an all-rounder who will eventually secure a job.
Communication skills are definitely important in securing a job because they demonstrate
your ability to understand the needs of the people around you and convey your thoughts
effectively. In addition, communication skills help one to strengthen relationships in the
workplace, which are important for corporate success.
However, to secure a job, you need to convince the interviewer that you have the necessary
skills and qualifications, apart from communication skills, that will be an asset to the
organisation.

9. Art of Gestures
Gestures refer the physical replacement of speech. Gestures are extremely important in
understanding the mind of a person. Gestures form a body language of their own.
It is extremely important that you learn to read the body gestures of the person you are talking
to. It will help you understand how well a man in listening to you, how much is he interested
in your talks, how confident is he about himself etc. Gestures are simple things. At certain
times, they are subtle. At other times, they are quite blatant.
If you learn the art of reading the gestures and understanding what do they actually mean, you
will actually be able to assess people better. Here are a few gestures that are most common
and which can help you understand what is going in the mind of the person next to you:

While talking to someone, always notice the way the person you are talking to keep his hands.
If a person keeps his arms open, it only means that he is interested in what you are saying.
However, if he is sitting with closed arms around his chest, it means he is not listening much
to what he is saying. While you speak, if a person in sitting inclined towards you, it means he
is quite interested in what you are saying. Read such signs to know if you should carry your
talk with the person concerned or not.
A lot of people stare you right in your eyes while talking. A lot of people find this habit of
others pretty intimidating. However, it has been proved that people who look into your eyes
while talking are people who have a very clear heart and a very high level of confidence. Thus,
do not be intimidated by people who stare you in the eye for their conscience is clear.
The way a person chooses to stand also speaks a lot about him. If a person stands straight, it
means he is an active man with a good amount of self confidence. If a person stands with
dropping shoulder, it means he is tired and there is not much enthusiasm in his life. Also, if a
man keeps his hand on his hips while standing, it means that he is a little restless and is on a
lookout for something to do.
Similarly, the way a person sits also speaks quite a lot about him. If a person sits with his legs
wide apart, it means that he is relaxed and does not have much on his mind. All in all, it shows
a comfortable state with not much to worry. On the other hand, if a person sits with his legs
crossed apart, it means he is not very comfortable with the situation that he is in. It also shows
a slight lack of interest.
There are other things that people do which shows how comfortable or uncomfortable they
are. People bit their nails when they are scared or anxious about something in particular. If
you are talking to someone and they keep on tapping something with their fingers, it means
that though they are listening to you, they are actually trying to find a way to get out and do
something else. At other times, some people keep on slapping their own chin slowly. When
does a person do that? People do this when they are trying to make a decision.
How can you know that a woman is interested in you? If she likes you, she will give out very
subtle signals. For instance, if a woman likes you, she will play with her hair or expose her
neck more often than she usually does. She will also laugh often on your jokes. Similarly, if a
man likes you, he will pay much attention to everything that you have to say.
You can also judge a person when you shake hands with him or her. If you get a firm palm to
shake, it means the person has a lot of confidence in himself. A shaking hand shows lack of
confidence. Some people like to shake hands with both their hands i.e. they will take your
hand with one hand and cover it with the other. Such kind of handshake is not much
appreciated as it is known to be hypocritical and shows insincere and unconcern attitude.
Lastly, if a person has sweaty palms, know that he is nervous about whatever he is going to do.
Gestures are never very loud. Body Language gives only very subtle signals. If you wish to
benefit from the language of gestures, you will have to learn to pick up on the subtle signs that
peoples bodies emanate.
