SCOPE

1.1

This specification covors the design, manufacture, inspection, testing


and supply of piping materals for installation at the Faclty in Kuwait.

The piping design shall fully comply with all relevant contractual

UNITS OF MEASURE

The metric units of measure shall be used throughout with the following
exceptions:

Formal flexibility analysis of all piping systems shall be carried out in


accordance with ASME 831.3, and results shall be made available to the
Company for review as required. Piping systems shall be adequately
supported/anchored/guided to avoid undue vibration, deflection and
stresses on piping loads and equipment. Process piping shall not be
used to support equipment or place undue stresses on equipment
flanges, etc. Pipe shall not be supported through flanges.

A minimum corrosion allowance of 1.5 mm or greater, if required by the


piping material classes, shall be provided for all piping components for
process systems except stainless steel piping. For stainless steel piping
components, no corrosion allowance shall be provided.

4.5

The pressure and temperature limits shown in Company piping materal


classes are based on flange design conditions per ASME 816.5 or as
noted otherwise. The Contractor may rationalise these to suit actual
maximum design conditions of services.

4.6

the requirements of ASME 831.3.

Post weld heat treatment {PWHT} shall be carried out as required by


ASME 831.3.

4.8

Metallc piping up to 1Yz-ln. nominal bore (NBl will be socket-welded


type or screwed. All screwed connections in hydrocarbon service shall
be seal welded up to the upstream side of the first block valve or
nstrument root valves. When used, threaded connections shall be as
per ASME 81.2O.1. Screwed steel plpe in process services shall be
minimum schedule 80. The first instrument isolation valve(s) on
vessels/equipment shall be flanged with a minimum of 2-in. NB.

Nominal pipe sizes 1Tt in.,2Yz in.,SYz in.,5 in. and any other nominal
pipe size not shown in ASME 836.1O, shall not be used except to match
the Approved Manufacturer's equipment connections. Where a non'
preferred connocton is encountered, the mating pipework shall be
increased immediately to the next acceptable size. Non-standard
classes, e.9., 40OLB, shall not be utilized in the Facility.

4.1O Epoxy lined piping shall be internally coated with tar epoxy to

minimum thickness of 3O0 microns.

VALVES

5.f

All valves, wherever applicable, shall bear API or BS monogram. Cast


carbon steel/stainless steel gate valves shall conform to the requirement
of either API 6D, BS 1414, API 600, and forged carbon steel/stainless
steel gate valves shall conform with API 602.

Globe valves shall conform to BS 1873, check valves to BS 1868, and


butterfly valves to AP 609/8S 5155. Globe and check valves 1Yz in.
and below shall conform to BS 5352 and plug valves to API 599/BS
5353 and 381 lO21lO2 Company Standard.

5.3

Full-bore ball valves as per Company Standard DES-L'OI3 are to be


used for hydrocarbon gas service and on crude oil inlet manifolds.

PIPING

6.1

All fire water and foam piping shall be constructed of flanged carbon
steel components internally lined with epoxy and externally coated and
wrapped for underground service. ln sizes 1 % in. and below, for
drains, etc., pipe and piping components shall be carbon steel with the
heavier corrosion allowance of 3.0 mm.

Jack screws shall be provided at blind or spacor locations per the


following:

FTTINGS

8.1

Reducing fittings, e.g., reducers, swages, tees-olets etc., may have


differing wall thicknesses at th ends relating to the different sizes.
Components shall be specified with ends to match the pipe wall
thickness or to match the heavier wall.

8.2

Butt-weld elbows shall be long-radius type. Short-radius elbows are not


preferred and shall only be used where space considerations dictate, and
only with CompanY aPProval.

8.3

Welded fttngs in accordance with ASTM A234 shall be subiect to


100016 radiography of welds.

8.4

Either ssamless or welded pipe may be formed into pipe bends,


excepting that furnace butt-welded type shall not be used. lt s
preferabl to use pipe bends for sizes 1Yz ln. and below in place of
welding elbows. When used, bending radius shall be a minimum of five
times the nominal PiPe diameter.

GASKETS

9.1

Compressed asbestos gaskets shall be used for all services in 1 50LB and
3O0LB classes. Spiral wound gaskets with asbestos filler shall be used
in 600L8 and higher classes.

9.2

Compressed asbestos gasket shall be 1/16-in. thick-ring type. Spiral


wound gaskets shall be 1/8 in. thick and have inner rings to suit service
conditions and outer rings of carbon steel matral.

9.3

Gaskets made of compressed asbestos shall be free of graphite.

SUMMARY
Except as restrcted or amplified in sections I to 11 inclusive, piping material
specifications satsfying service conditions and code requirements shall be
developed by the Contractor and submitted for Company approval prior to
incorporation into the Facillty. The Contractor shall comply with the
Engineering Group Specification entitled "Piping Material Classes" (Number
015-LH-10O1) to develop a detailed piping material specification.
