Bimal Roy, the Silent Master of Indian Cinema piloted

the golden age of cinema in the 1940s. A socially
committed director, his films had the power to inspire
and move audiences. The Satyajit Ray Memorial Society
on 9th January 2016 plans to remember the works of
Bimal Roy. The director and his work would be
remembered.
One of the most acclaimed Hindi film directors of all
time; he was famous for his romantic-realist
melodramas that took on important social issues while
still being entertaining.
Roy made his mark with his poetic screenplays and use
of emotions in films like "Parineeta", "Devdas", "Do
Bigha Zameen" and "Bandini", at a time when creative
brilliance resonated in virtually every aspect of
filmmaking.
By 1966, the year of his death, he had directed more
than 20 films, most of which got widespread
acclaim.Bimal Roy passed away at the age of 55 on 7th
January 1966, leaving behind an unmatched and
To highlight Bimal Royss status as a cineaste and filmlover over his status as a parallel filmmaker, Satyajit
Ray Memorial Society and the National Gallery of
Modern Art , Bangalore and are collaborating to
organise a day long programme to remember Bimal Roy
on his 50th death anniversary at NGMA Bangalore
Auditorium, on the 9th of January 2016.

The programme proposes to feature his most impactive

work Do Bigha Zameen, alongwith
a short film by
Doordarshan in the Portrait of a Director Series.
Four decades after his death, Bimal Roys stature as one
of Indias foremost filmmakers is on the decline, thanks
to a new generation of cinema goers who have never
watched his films.
Most of Roys classics were made in the 1950s and 60s,
the golden era of Bollywood, but their screenings are
now limited to retrospectives at film festivals.
Satyajit Ray Memorial Society is standing by Rinki Roy,
and Bimal Roy Memorial in taking up cudgels on the
directors behalf who hopes to keep alive the legacy of
Roy and his contemporaries.
Satyajit Ray Memorial Society wants to make the young
audience know about the classics that exist.
The vision behind the programme is to represent as a
whole Roys career both in terms of its various phases.
From the imp active and emotionally charged charged
films of the middle and his assimilation into the larger
culture of the world in the final and the various ideas
contained within it.
The film will be discussed at length in a panel discussion
that will feature contemporary film makers who have
studied the works of Roy actively for the past so many
years and are keen to preserve Roys artistic legacy.
The list includes Mr. Girish Kasaravalli , Mr Girish Karnad
, Mr KM Chaitanya, Mr Prakash Belwadi. We propose to
involve them in a discussion on Bimal Roys Cinema.
