Student-athletes make college commitments

Moorestown High Schools Carlie Blessing, Andrew Cannuli, Greg Gamble and Ryan Loftus choose colleges
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
During an official visit to
Lehigh University on Dec. 6 and 7,
Greg Gamble, a wide receiver for
Moorestown High School football,
decided he was going to commit
to the school.
After making his commitment,
he had to wait nearly two months
to sign his National Letter of Intent.
Last Wednesday, National Signing Day finally arrived, and Gambles long wait to lock in his commitment to Lehigh finally ended.
The process was long and
stressful, but honestly its a
dream come true, Gamble said.
I get to play D-1 football.
Gamble and three other
Moorestown student-athletes officially announced their college
choices during the winter signing
day on Wednesday, Feb. 3. Gamble, soccer goalie Carlie Blessing,
bowler Andrew Cannuli and football kicker Ryan Loftus revealed
the colleges they would compete
for beginning in the 2016-17
school year before a small crowd
of families and friends at the
Moorestown Athletic Center.
Each athlete committed to different schools at three levels of
NCAA athletics. Blessing and
Gamble each signed their Nation-

Seniors Greg Gamble, Ryan Loftus, Carlie Blessing and Andrew Cannuli prepared to officially make their college commitments on National
Signing Day last Wednesday. Gamble will play football at Lehigh University, Loftus will play football at Gettysburg College, Blessing will play
soccer at the University of Richmond, and Cannuli will bowl at McKendree University.
al Letter of Intent on Wednesday
as they will compete for Division
I schools. Blessing will be playing
soccer at the University of Richmond, while Gamble made his
commitment to play football at
Lehigh official. Cannuli will bowl
at the Division II level for McKendree University in Illinois, and
Loftus will be kicking for Division III Gettysburg Colleges football team.
Signing day is a formality for
many student-athletes. Most

make verbal commitments to colleges prior to signing day. However, Division I student-athletes
arent officially bound to a school
until they sign a letter of intent.
Last Wednesday gave the athletes
a sense of finality.
Im in a group chat with all of
my soccer teammates who are
also signing today, Blessing said.
So its kind of a were done feeling.
Blessing, a four-year varsity
goalie for the Quakers girls soc-

cer team, was excited to finally

sign her NLI on Wednesday. She
said she visited more than 30
schools over the past few years
and said it was a relief to finally
be locked in to Richmond.
Each athlete was attracted to
their schools for different reasons, but all shared the same enthusiasm about their future
school.
I really like the coaches and
the size of the school as well as
the girls, Blessing said about

Richmond. Its just the team environment overall is very nice.

As soon as I visited, I felt right
at home, Gamble said about
Lehigh. I was going to take some
other visits, but as soon as I got
done from Lehigh, I knew I wanted to go there. I loved the campus,
I loved the coaches. It was a great
fit for me.

seasons booting field goals and

MHS Interact Club hosts Soup for the Soul charity event Feb. 20
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
This winter, the Moorestown
High School Interact Club is making it possible to warm up your
body and your soul by providing
soup and a way
to give

back to the community.

The MHS Interact Club will
host its 14th Annual Soup for the
Soul charity event on Saturday,
Feb. 20 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at
the First Presbyterian Church,
101 Bridgeboro Road. Those who
attend are granted access to a buffet-style meal with all-youcan-eat soup and bread for
a small fee. All proceeds are donated to
Philabundance,
which is dedicated to ending
hunger in the
Delaware Valley.
Each one
of us feels the
need to give
back to the
community.
This is a great
way for anyone

close to the event to get involved.

The community can serve by
helping out and having some
soup, Ali Simeone, co-chair of
the advertising committee, said.
It is reassuring to know that
the money stays local and that
were helping out people around
our area, John Fallows, co-chair
of the advertising committee,
said.
The MHS Interact Club is a student-run organization dedicated
to serving the community. It hosts
four main events throughout the
year, with Soup for the Soul
being one of its biggest.
Students have been working
hard these past few months, getting local restaurants to donate
the soup and bread that will be
served throughout the afternoon.
The event also features raffle and

Iowa brings some surprises

Trump has challengers; Democrats are in for a fight; Christie is done
onths of campaigning, of
muck slinging, of pointing
fingers, and of, sometimes,
yelling are finally producing some results. Last week, the Iowa caucuses
the first stop in the race for each major
political partys nomination for president produced some interesting results.
Republican candidate Ted Cruz took
home the primarys first victory for his
party, besting the outspoken Donald
Trump by a margin of 28 percent to 24
percent. It was a successful night for
Cruz, and not a very good one for
Trump.
But it was also a good night for
Marco Rubio, who surged to third
place with 23 percent. It puts him in a

great position to make a move in the

coming weeks.
The battle in the Democratic party
was a little muddier. Even though
Hillary Clinton claimed victory the
night of the caucuses, before all the
polling districts were in, she was neck
and neck with Bernie Sanders, each
within decimal points of each other.
Rounded up, each candidate received
50 percent of the vote.

Our homegrown talent, Gov.

Christie, while not completely done,
looks dead in the water. He ranked 10th
among Republicans last week, with
only 2 percent of the Iowa vote.
The fight moved on to New Hampshire this week, and it will continue
down to South Carolina on Feb. 20,
then over to Nevada on Feb. 23. Eight
more states primaries will occur in
March.
By this time next month, we could
have clear-cut winners, or we could
have a very unclear situation on our
hands. Either way, with the Iowa caucuses in the books, and with the results
being so close for both parties, were
likely to see quite a bit of campaigning
ahead.

I usually have to read your budget editorials several times to be sure my fading
comprehension skills have not left me
hopelessly confused. But your Feb. 3 Budget Time editorial allowed me to set a new
re-reading record.

Your statement Its time to do the impossible: provide outstanding service for
little or no money has to rank as one of
the most nonsensical and economically ignorant comments I have seen in years.
If I recall, last years Moorestown school
district budget was approximately $65 million. Based on a total enrollment of 4,000
students, that equates to a per-pupil investment of more than $16,000 per student

per year. For comparison purposes, the national average is less than $11,000.
We all sadly realize that New Jersey is
an outrageously expensive place to live
compared to many other states, but please
do not abuse us with teary-eyed statements
that imply that Moorestown demands of
its taxpayers little or no money with
which to educate its students.

Blood drive in honor of Victoria Palko rescheduled for Feb. 20

During the snowstorm on Jan. 23 and 24,
many blood drives were cancelled due to
the blizzard. The Third Annual Community Blood Drive in honor of Victoria Palko,
which was to be held on Jan. 23, was cancelled for that reason. However, it has been
rescheduled for Feb. 20.
Help save lives in honor of Victoria. Two
years ago, this time of year, she was found
unresponsive.

Through the selflessness of blood donation, shes completely healthy now and will
be graduating from University of
Delaware in May.
Please help the Palko family show
their appreciation and help pay it forward
by coming out to the blood drive. Their
goal is to get 100 pints of blood in one
day.
The blood drive will be held on Feb. 20

OLGC live streams liturgies

Our Lady of Good Counsel completes conversion to new
streaming software, giving parishioners chance to watch at home
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
One of the main goals for any
church is to be able to spread the
word of its religion to those
around it. Moorestowns Our
Lady of Good Counsel parish is
now able to share its message outside of the church as well.
In the past few weeks, OLGC
has completed its conversion to
new streaming software and is
now able to live stream its liturgies. The streaming allows residents with poor health, physical

limitations or those who cant

make it to church to still participate in events by watching at
home.
The Internet is our new world,
and we need to spread our message in that new world, Father
Damian McElroy said.
We have to keep up with technology and use it efficiently to
spread the word of God, Marketing Director Michelle Molz said.
OLGC started streaming services in 2013, but in August that
year, the church was hit by lightning during a huge storm and the

equipment was damaged. Piece

by piece, the church was able to
get its equipment running, but
wanted to find a new streaming
service, as the service through
the old provider would often
crash.
Last December, Molz attended
the Digital Church Conference on
New Media, New Evangelization and, from a recommendation, found a new provider called
Streamspot. Not only could the
church broadcast live masses and

The Make-N-Take is a new

educate young people about easy,
tasty and healthy food options that

they can make themselves. A combination of healthy eating, nutritional awareness and consumer
science will be combined to help

healthy food can be accessible and
inexpensive if you know how to
use it. The program is designed
around a food pantry shopping

events with this new service, but

can archive and share videos as
teaching tools in the OLGC
School. OLGC is one of the only
Catholic churches in the area live
streaming at this time, according
to Molz. She feels it will pay off in
the long run with the number of
things the church can do and provide for people through streaming.
Having video services allows
anyone to watch a church event.
This includes those nearby with
limitations on getting to church,
and those far away who cant
make it to the event. The streaming service came in handy during
the Jan. 24 blizzard, when people
couldnt go to church, and 450

people were able to watch from

their homes.
The capability could be used
by those confined to their care facilities, to remote family and
friends during weddings and funerals, and now, without any additional effort, by hundreds of
snow-bound parishioners, Father Jim Grogan said.
Another benefit of the streaming service is for evangelization.
People who are interested in finding a place to practice their faith
can watch, listen and see if they
would feel comfortable at OLGC.
If it helps bring people to us, it
makes a lot of sense to broadcast
His message to as many people as
we can, Molz said.
Molz said teachers have already started to use past broadcasts as tools during classes at
OLGC School.
However, McElroy doesnt
want the streaming to replace

people being present at the

church and its services, but to
help in situations where people
cannot attend.
In our heart of hearts, our
first choice is for people to be
present,
gathered
together.
Streaming is not a replacement
for the physical presence in
church; we want people to form
connections, relationships and a
community, McElroy said.
OLGC would like to be able to
live stream other events such as
bus trips or things outside of the
church using other devices but
would need a volunteer to help it
do so.
The live streams can be found
at the OLGC website, www.olgcnj.org. The streams and past
broadcasts can be found on the
left, under the main photo on the
website. Streams and videos can
be watched on a computer as well
as other mobile devices.

Sheckels steps down from MBA Board

There are some big shoes to fill
on the Moorestown Business Association Board.
After seven
years, Tom Sheckels is stepping
down to pursue other goals, but
not without leaving a positive
mark on the organization to
which he devoted so much time.
The MBA is grateful for the
countless hours of hard work
that Sheckels put in as a board
member, treasurer and web master, and will continue to benefit
from the many improvements he
made throughout his tenure.
Sheckels work for the MBA
came after serving as an environmental engineer for Naval Facilities Engineering for 30 years. His
job took him to U.S. Naval bases
and facilities throughout the
Northeast, determining environmental deficiencies and working
with Navy personnel toward solutions for the problems he identified. When the government initiated the Base Realignment and
Closure process, Sheckels department was consolidated and he

local businesses and organizations.
All proceeds will be donated to
Philabundance, a charity created
in 1984 with the simple belief that

no man, woman or child should

go hungry. It seeks to drive
hunger from the Delaware Valley
today and end hunger forever. According to its website, 750,000 people are facing hunger in the
Delaware Valley.
(We do this event) to help out
hunger in the area. All of the
money stays close. (Those who attend) could be helping people
they might know. They are making a difference in helping end
hunger, Simeone said.
Last year, the Interact Club
raised more than $4,000, and at 50
cents a meal, this provided more
than 8,000 meals for the hungry
and malnourished throughout
the Delaware Valley.
This year, the club would like
to reach its 2016 donation goal of
$5,000.
The goal is to keep the event
growing. Each year we try to

raise a little more than last year,

Fallows said.
Students of the Interact Club
hope those who attend feel good
they gave back to their community, but also have a delicious meal
and tell their friends about the
event for next year.
It makes you feel really good,
the thought that the money is
going back to the community,
Fallows said.
(We hope they) tell their
friends and come again next year
and spread the word, Simeone
said.
Tickets will be sold at the door
and cost $10 for adults and $7 for
seniors and children. Additionally, with a $10 takeout option, you
will receive a container of your
favorite soup, as well as two

and pursue his passion for photography, but his commitment to

improve the world around him
stayed intact. With the same
brand of dedication he brought to
his former job, he turned his eye
on Moorestown where he and his
wife chose to move in 1981 because of its charm particularly
historic Main Street.
After launching Sheckels Creations Photography in 2006, he
joined the Moorestown Business
Association and right away began
to volunteer for the group by lending his technology skills to help
improve and develop content for
the organizations new website.
He wanted to become more involved, and in 2007 he ran for and
was elected to the board of the organization, embarking on a
seven-year term of community
leadership.
For the last three years, Sheckels served as board treasurer, and
contributed his expertise in up-

grading and streamlining the organizations accounting systems.

He also became the MBA webmaster, keeping it up-to-date,
training other board members,
involving social media and sending other forms of communication. And there was one other
service he performed for the
group whenever there was a
need for a high-quality photograph, Sheckels was indisputably
the best man for the job. His images have been used on the organizations website and directories, and served to illustrate articles about the MBA in magazines
and newspapers.
Sheckels decided to step down
from the MBA board at the end of
2015 so he could spend more time
perfecting his photography, a
hobby he has cultivated since
childhood when he snapped pictures with his Brownie Instamatic and developed the film himself
in his fathers darkroom. After
college and a stint in the Navy, the
advent of digital photography
rekindled his interest in the
medium and he began to seriously pursue this avocation, special-

izing in panoramic shots. Dynamic photos of Moorestown, as

well as journeys to Antarctica,
Africa, Alaska and other stunning locales around the world, are
featured
on
his
website
www.sheckelscreations.com.
Although no longer on the
board, Sheckels remains a dedicated member of the MBA and
has spent time helping new board
members transition into their positions. At the year-end MBA
luncheon in December, Association President Don Powell presented Sheckels with a plaque
commemorating his years of
service.
The MBA and I personally
will sincerely miss Tom's guidance and steady hand. As the
MBA has grown, Tom has been
instrumental in making necessary upgrades and changes but
more importantly providing a
structure around which that
growth could evolve. His quiet,
steady counsel has been wonderful and will be sorely missed. I
wish him only the best and am
grateful for his friendship and
service to the MBA, Powell said.

MACON
Continued from page 10
Everyone has his or her ups and
downs, but Ive survived it all and
Ive had a very, very good life. I
can thank the Lord for that,
Macon said.
Macon was officially born on
Feb. 6, 1915, in Tampa, Fla., to
Taylor Stephens and Willie Mae
Hamilton Stephens. According to
Macon, she was actually born in
1914, but was part of a late census
and her birth certificate was
dated incorrectly as 1915, so she
goes by that date now.
When she was just a baby, her
family moved to Philadelphia,
where she lived for more than 40
years. There, she grew up with
four siblings.
Macon was a federal employee,
working first at the Frankford Arsenal, followed by the United
States Marine Corp. where she retired after 30 years. A trailblazer
for desegregation in the armed
forces, Macon was one of seven
black women to desegregate her
former place of employment after
Executive Order 9981 was issued
by President Harry S. Truman to
abolish racial discrimination in
the United States armed forces.
Despite the discrimination,
we made it through, Macon said.
Macon met her late husband
Eugene at the age of 17. They fell
in love and, after World War I, got
married. They spent 50 happy
years together. During their marriage, Macon and her husband
adopted their son Charles who
blessed them with three grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
The loves of my life, Macon
said of her husband and son.
The Macons bought property
in Moorestown 65 years ago. During that time, Eugene built their
home with his own hands. In 1965,
the
Macons
moved
to
Moorestown, and she has been
living in that house ever since.
When Macon first moved in,

the family didnt have utilities for

more than a year, she said. Everything was much more underdeveloped back then, with open land
and trees. She lived on one dirt
road in the area and the town
then had one traffic light.
Im forever grateful. I have
beautiful neighbors and dear
friends, Macon said.
A large factor in helping
Macon to reach 101 has been her
healthy and active lifestyle. Since
she was young, she has been a
lover of fresh vegetables. That is
what she continues to eat today,
and doesnt leave any leftovers.
She also hardly eats meat, sticking to fish and occasionally chicken in her soup.
Macon has travelled all over
the United States and Europe,
most recently going to California
in December. She also remains active by planting flowers in the
spring, doing her own lawn in the
summer and using a leaf blower
in the fall. Macon doesnt have
any trouble going up and down
the stairs; she is just is a little
slower than she used to be.

But what Macon attributed

most to her age and health was
God and his blessings.
I feel wonderful, I have no
aches and no pains. I move slow,
but that is, I suppose, so I dont get
in trouble, she said with a laugh.
Macon lives with and is taken
care of by her caregiver Sonia
Williamson. Alfreda said she does
everything and truly is a blessing.
(Alfreda)s very active and independent By law, because she
is 101, they dont want her to be
here by herself, Williamson said.
Last year, Macon had a surprise
birthday celebration for her 100th
birthday on Feb. 21. Despite a
snowy day, she was surrounded by
more than 100 family members,
friends and neighbors. Also in attendance were Moorestowns former Mayor Victoria Napolitano
and Macons niece, Sen. Donzella
James from Georgia. Both gave
her a proclamation, and she was
also named an honorary Georgia
state citizen. Also, for her 100th
birthday, Macon was invited to
have dinner with President
Obama, but decided not to go.
