Spotlight- a movie based on true story of a group of journalists from Boston Globe who
uncovered the massive scandal of sexual abuse and cover-up by the local Catholic Church. It is a
good movie as well as a sad and even painful one.
I brought this unfortunate reality to prayer and I understood that the mistakes of certain
individuals have brought darkness to the Church. However, I must never forget that the Light
continues to shine forever. This Light is none other than Christ.
I am the Light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the
light of life. (John 8:12)
The Light continues to shine through multitudes of people who silently have given and are giving
their lives selflessly for the good of others. The Light continues to shine through the goodness of
so many individuals. The Light continues to burn bright wherever love prevails.
One person who has allowed the Light of Christ to shine through his life is Fr. Jaime Bonet, our
Verbum Dei Founder. As I am writing this, Fr. Jaime is presently ill in a critical state at the
hospital. He is 89 years old. He has lived a full life of passion for the work of evangelisation
through preaching the Word of God. I have been always attracted to his deep intimacy with the
Trinity and love for Mother Mary. He preached not theories but his very own friendship with God.
His faithful Yes has brought me to be a Verbum Dei Missionary today. I am proud of my founder.
I am inspired to follow his footsteps and walk his same path of love for Jesus and passion for the
people.
In one of his prayer, Fr. Jaime wrote in his journal addressing to God with these simple words,
You are mine. As Fr. Jaime now stands at the threshold of eternal life, I know that God is
whispering these same words to him, You are mine. and ready to welcome him into His eternal
embrace of love.
Yes, there are scandals that cast darkness.. However, we must never forget that there are many
more individuals who shine Christs light to us and the world.
Jaime, you are one of them! Your light continues to shine!
