Overview
The introduction serves as an orientation for readers of the report, giving them the perspective
they need to understand the detailed information coming in later sections.
The Five Stages of the Introduction (Basic Format for Ordering your
Information)
The introduction can be divided into five parts, or stages.
• Stage I : the setting
The writer establishes a context, or frame of reference, to help readers
understand how the research fits into a wider field of study.
• Stage II : the review of literature
You review the findings of other researchers who have already published in
your area of interest. (This is often written as a separate chapter in theses and
dissertations.)
• Stage III : missing information
This indicates the area that is not treated in the previous literature, but that is
important from the point of view of your own work.
• Stage IV : the statement of purpose
This formally announces the purpose of your research.
• Stage V : the statement of value
This indicates possible benefits or applications of your work. (This stage may
be omitted entirely.)
GENERAL
SPECIFIC
While this is taking place, water in the leaf parenchyma tissues evaporates into
the sub-stomatal cavities and diffuses through the
open stomates into the atmosphere.
This process can create large water potential differences between
the leaves and the soil surrounding the roots.
