Terminology

60

e-house

61

e-beam is the premier laminated

veneer lumber (LVL) product
available in Australia. LVL has
many advantages over traditional
building products, including its
uniformity of engineering properties,
its high strength to weight ratio
and its availability in longer lengths.
Available in a range of thicknesses
from 35mm to 75mm with depths
from 90mm to 450mm, e-beam
is manufactured from plantation
timbers, making it an environmentally
sustainable resource.

About e-beam
e-beam conforms with the
requirements of AS/NZS 4357
Structural Laminated Veneer
Lumber. It is manufactured by
laminating Maritime Pine and/or
Radiata Pine veneer, using phenolic
adhesive, in a continuous assembly
in which the grain direction of all
veneers runs longitudinally. It is
pressed as a 1.2m nominal width
continuous billet in various standard
thicknesses, cut to standard widths
and any specified length for use as
structural beams and other framing
components.

Use of e-beam Data

The Tables and other technical data provided in this publication are only
applicable to e-beam LVL manufactured by Wesbeam. This data should
not be used for look-alike or substitute products. Use of the e-beam data
for look-alike or substitute products can result in unsafe or unsatisfactory
performance.

Basis for Design

The design criteria used to develop the Span Tables contained in this
brochure are based on the assumptions listed in AS1684.1 1999
Residential timber framed construction Part 1 Design Criteria.

Design Loads

The design loads include:t Dead loads

t Live loads
t Wind loads
t Snow loads
t Earthquake loads, and
t Load Combinations of the above loads
Design load limitations for each of the above load or load combination cases
are also as per AS1684.1 1999 Residential timber framed construction.

Design Capacity Factor ()

The capacity factor () used to calculate the design capacity of a structural

framing member listed in the Span Tables is taken from AS1720.1 2010.

Terminology, Definitions and

Notations used in these Tables

The terminology, definitions and notations used in this brochure are similar to
and consistent with those used and listed in AS1684.2 2010 Residential
timber framed construction.

Using Multiple Sections

The use of multiple sections where called for in the Span Tables is permitted
using vertically nail laminated LVL. Multiple LVL members are to be fixed in
accordance with Cl 2.3 of AS1684.2 2010.

Characteristic Design Values

The characteristic Design Values for Wesbeam LVL are available on

request from Wesbeams Technical Department. This service is available for
professional design practioners.
The spans listed in this brochure for LVL manufactured by Wesbeam apply
only when the moisture content of the LVL is below 15% in service and are
for on edge orientation of the LVL section.

e-beam Specification

When fixing LVL menufactured by Wesbeam, treat it exactly the same as

seasoned timber. Use the standard edge and end distances and spacings
between fasteners appropriate for seasoned softwood timber. You can also
use the same fasteners in either the face or edge.
Professional design practitioners should use Joint Group JD3 properties as
listed in AS 1720.1 to determine the load carrying capacity of nail, screw or
bolt fasteners used with e-beam.

Structural Design and Certification

The Span Tables and technical data in this publication are Certified to be in
accordance with all relevant Australian Standards and have been prepared by;
Timberbuilt Pty Ltd 58A Whiteside Road Clayton Vic 3169
Ph: 03 9543 3733

Timberbuilt Pty Ltd are an independent Consulting Engineering firm,
experienced and qualified in timber engineering design.

All roof beams must be installed and restrained in accordance with the
guidelines in this brochure, AS1684 and good building practice. For Strutting
beams with a depth to breadth ratio greater than 3, they must be laterally
restrained at mid-span and support points.
Possible methods of achieving the required lateral restraint are shown below.
Where a Strutting beam is used to support hanging beams (Strutting /
Counter beams), the fixing of the Hanging beam to the Strutting beam may
be assumed to provide adequate lateral restraint.

Blocking

e-beam and e-splay strutting and Strutting/Counter beams are required by

AS1684 to be blocked so as to provide 25mm clearance mid span. This
clearance may be provided by blocking both ends of the beam up 35mm
where rafter depth allows, alternatively blocking up internal end of e-splay
beam by 70mm.

1. The above span tables assume that roof beams (ridge, intermediate, eave and bressummer beams) have no lateral restraint to the bottom edge under
wind uplift conditions.
2. All sections with depth to breadth ratio exceeding three must be restrained against rollover as per AS1684.
3. Multiple sections nail laminated as per AS 1684.
4. Bearing length at end supports to be not less than 70 mm.

end of story

Wesbeam e-splay engineered LVL

the lightweight alternative to splayed steel beams.
e-splay Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL) roof beams offer a light weight
alternative to splayed steel beams. They can be used as Strutting beams,
Strutting/Counter beams, Strutting/Hanging beams and Counter beams.
Due to the limitations placed on timber beam taper cuts (minimum end
dimension of 100mm or 1/3 the member depth; whichever is the greater),
the conventional solution has been the use of reinforced splay cut steel
beams. e-splay LVL beams, by Wesbeam, now give the builder and
carpenter a lightweight timber alternative to steel for these applications.

Introduction
to e-beam2

If you have worked with Wesbeam LVL products before, you know how light,
easy and fast they are to use. What you might not realise is it is now possible
to completely replace steel strutting beams with Wesbeam LVL. To help you
select and install the right e-beams for the job, weve created the e-beam2
roof beam system.

Primary Strutting Beam

Secondary strutting beam

e-beam2 makes design, specification and installation a cinch by including:

t Easy to use span tables in a format familiar to specifiers of steel beams.
t A simple 3 step system that enables specifiers to design e-beam,
e-splay or timber secondary beams connected to e-beam or e-splay
primary beams.
t Fully engineered e-splay when beams require splaying to a point.
t Carpenter friendly connection details that enable quick beam-to-beam
connection.

Three Simple Steps to Selecting

Primary and Secondary Beam

With the e-beam2 specification system, it takes just 3 quick steps to select
the right beams for any job.
Step 1
Calculate the Width Of Roof (WOR) applied to the roof beam using the
method illustrated on page 33.
Step 2
Is the roofing material metal sheet or tile?
Step 3
Does the beam require a splay cut greater than 2/3s of its depth?
No: use the e-beam tables on pages 34 and 35.
Yes: use the e-splay tables on pages 36 and 37 for single splay
or pages 38 and 39 for double splay.

32

Determining the
Width of Roof

Beam Support

The Width of Roof (WOR) is measured perpendicular to the Beam

inquestion being x/2 + y/2.

Notes:

2. All roof and ceiling members (ceiling joists, hanging beams, rafters,
underpurlins) running perpendicular to the beam in question are to be
supported in line with the next parallel support.
3. All spans and distances are measured on plan (horizontal plane).
4. Roof pitch has been allowed in the calculation of beams in these tables.
Maximum roof pitch is 35.

underpurlins) running parallel to the beam in question are to be supported
in line with the beam support.

1. All sections with span to depth ration exceeding 3 must be restrained against roll over at supports and at each strutting point. Connection between
Primary and Secondary beams, and hanging and counter beams are assumed to provide this required restraint at connection.
2. Bearing length at support to be not be less than 70 mm.
3. Beam ends may be chamfer cut to a minimum of 90mm or D/3, whichever is greater.
4. NS signifies section size unlikely to be suitable.

Wesbeam e-beam2
connection details
are WA specific

At Wesbeam, we are so committed to stick roof construction in WA that we

have engineered a range of LVL strutting beam connection details specifically
for local conditions. In tandem with MiTek, weve developed a split hanger
connection for 90 connections. Weve also collaborated with WA specifiers
and carpenters to develop e-ledger, a metal bracket for strutting beam
connections between 45 and 90. By using a MiTek split hanger or a
Wesbeam e-ledger a fully engineered connection detail is assured for all load
conditions in the e-beam2 tables.

Split Hanger
For secondary strutting beams connecting at 90 to the primary strutting
beams, Wesbeam recommends the use of the MiTek 140mm split hanger.

e-ledger
Wesbeams e-ledger eliminates the need to notch secondary LVL strutting
beams when connecting two LVL strutting beams at angles other than 90.
This is a major advance for specifiers as the current practice of notching the
secondary beam into a pine ledger significantly reduces the maximum load
capacity of the connection.
e-ledger provides an easy to install solution for all load conditions contained
in the e-beam2 tables.

Faster, stronger, safer,

costeffective roof.
Wesbeams laminated veneer
lumber (LVL) e-strut and e-purlin
make building stick roofs for tile
or metal sheet cladding easier.
Which means that construction
timeisshorter.
And because it has been
engineered to enable greater strut
spacing, e-purlin creates stronger
roofs using less material.

It reduces the need for steel strutting

beams and the costs associated
with lifting and fixing them.
Purpose-engineered, e-strut and
e-purlin have greater strength and
uniformity than timber, and are
comparatively lighter, making them
safer and easier to work with.

e-purlin engineered LVL roof underpurlin to support stick roofs for tile
and metal sheet cladding.
e-purlin offers the greatest flexibility in the design of stick roofs clad with tile or
metal sheeting. They are available in a range of lengths from 3m to 10.8m with
longer lengths available by special manufacture. e-purlins are design engineered
tomaximise the efficient use of material and time.

Features
t Engineered for straightness and consistent performance
t High load bearing capacity for greater maximum strut spacing
t Longer lengths available, minimising jointing and wastage
t High strength yet lighter and safer to handle
t Chamfered edges for safer and more comfortable handling

e-strut engineered LVL roof struts to support stick roofs for tile and
metal sheet cladding.
e-struts offer minimum material and time wastage when used with e-purlins in
the fabrication of stick roofs. Engineered e-struts are highly consistent in their
performance and dimensional stability. They have superior compressive strength
which resists the dynamic loads associated with high wind coastal conditions. And
e-struts are available in lengths of 3.6m and 4.5m which enables design flexibility for
the most complex roof shapes.
e-struts are compartively lighter than timber products, making them safer to handle.

e-garage

e-garage is an engineered solution for beams in stick roofs over

garages, car ports and alfresco areas of a residence.
e-garage offers the greatest flexibility in the design of garages and car ports by
making it possible to completely replace steel beams. This extremely strong,
lightweight product delivers work safety benefits whilst reducing the cost and
complexity of construction due to cranes, welders and ballistic nail guns.
All e-garage beams are treated to level H3 providing lasting protection in
external above ground applications against fungal decay, termites and other
wood boring insects. The H3 treatment used by Wesbeam ensures that
e-garage maintains its dimensional stability for length, width, strength and
straightness.

Site Protection

Wesbeam e-garage and alfresco LVL beams need to be protected from

surface and/or end checking due to cyclic climatic changes caused the
elements while the beams are stored on site, during construction and after
final installation. This can be achieved by:

Frequently Asked Questions

How is Wesbeam LVL different
in its performance to sawn timber
and steel?

Wesbeam LVL is manufactured from thin veneers of Maritime Pine

that are rotary peeled, dried and laminated together under heat and
pressure with a structural adhesive to form a solid member. The
thin veneers are randomly distributed throughout the beams during
manufacture thereby reducing the effect of natural features like
knots and gum veins.
The properties of LVL show much less variation than those of both
sawn timber and glulam. In fact, LVL beams are on average 50%
stiffer and 2-3 times stronger than the sawn timber from which it
ismanufactured.
Steel, being a manufactured product, has a higher strength and
stiffness property compared to LVL but it is also almost 12 times
heavier! This means that much of its higher strength properties are
used to support the steel beam itself.

How much does LVL deflect over time

and is LVL more likely to lead to cornice
cracking than steel beams?

All beams, regardless of product material (e.g. LVL, steel), deflect

upon installation. This is caused by the self-weight of the beam as
well as the loads it supports. But when using the relevant Australian
standards, the beams will achieve the same deflection performance
as steel over time.

What is coefficient of variation (CoV)

andhow is it relevant to the specification
ofstructural beams?

In relation to structural beams, the coefficient of variation is a

measure of the variability in a particular structural property. Structural
products with a low CoV behave more closely to the design with
predicted behaviour whereas products with higher CoVs tend to
vary to a higher degree to their predicted behaviour. Universal steel
beams have similar CoVs to LVL, whilst CoV of MGP pine is at least
twice that of LVL. Choosing products with a low CoV, such as LVL,
will give you a more reliable job.

Because LVL is a wood based

product does that mean that it is
less consistent in its performance
than steel?

LVL has reliable and consistent structural properties, and has

strength and stiffness capabilities greater than the individual veneers
from which it is manufactured. The maximum effect of a single
natural feature (eg. a knot) in an LVL laminate is very small as the
laminates are so thin compared with the thickness of the whole
beam. In terms of structural performance, this achieves reliable and
consistent LVL products. In fact, LVL has a coefficient of variation
that is similar to Australian-produced hot rolled steel sections.

FAQs

Wesbeams products and technical

literature are fully compliant with
relevant Australian Standards, what
doesthatmean?

Wesbeam LVL products are manufactured in accordance with

the requirements of AS/NZS 4357 Structural Laminated Veneer
Lumber. If required, preservative treated LVL in accordance with the
requirements of AS/NZS 1604.4 (specification for preservative
treatment) Laminated Veneer Lumber are available.
Wesbeams products are typically used in residential construction
and the supporting technical literature produced is in line with the
requirements of AS 1684 Residential Timber-framed Construction.
Wesbeams products are not limited to residential construction and
can be easily designed and specified by building professionals.

What assumptions are made

in Wesbeams span tables and
technical literature?

Span tables and technical literature produced by Wesbeam for the

residential market utilise the design assumptions contained in AS
1684.1 Residential Timber-framed Construction design criteria.
If there are any other design assumptions used or required building
practices, these will be clearly stated in published literature.

How can I be sure that Wesbeam

productswill perform as specified
in the Wesbeam literature?

Wesbeam LVL products are manufactured in accordance with

the requirements of AS/NZS 4357 Structural Laminated Veneer
Lumber with the quality of manufacture externally checked via
audits undertaken by the Engineered Wood Products Association
of Australasia. Being manufactured, LVL products have consistent
design properties that are used in Wesbeams literature.

Terminology used in these tables

Span

the clear distance between supports measured along the beam.

Continuous Span Beams

are beams supported at three or more points along their length. Continuous span
values given in the tables should only be used where:-

Terminology

a) The beam is not notched or partially cut through at internal support points and,
b) If the spans are not equal, the largest span is not greater that twice
the smallest adjacent span.
However if either of the above conditions are not met, use the singe span tables
forthelargest span to obtain the appropriate size.

Overhang Span
(sometimes referred to as cantilever)

the distance from the face of the support to the free end of the beam, measured
alongthe beam.

Spacing

Tables such as for rafters, floor joists and ceiling joists require the spacing of members
to be known or selected so you can obtain the required size for a given span.
Spacing should be interpreted as the center to centre distance between adjacent
parallelmembers.

Roof Load Width

Roof Load Width (RLW) is used in these tables to determine the load applied to isolated
roof beams such as strutting beams etc. Roof load width (RLW), are measures of
the load applied from roofs. RLW should be determined in accordance with AS 1684
Residential timber-framed construction.

Ceiling Load Width

Ceiling Load Width (CLW) is used in these tables to determine the load applied to
singleroof beams such as hanging beams, strutting-hanging beams etc. CLW are
measures of the load applied from ceilings. CLW should be determined in accordance
with AS 1684 Residential timber framing construction.

Roof Mass

Roof mass has been separated into two categories related to the type of roof
cladding sheet and tile roof only. The roof masses are set forth in AS1684 Residential
timber-framed construction.
