II. Problem Solving

Direction: Solve the following problems on your test booklet. Highlight the final answers.

1. In a wetted-wall tower an air-H2S mixture is flowing by a film of water which is flowing as a thin
film down a vertical plate. The H2S is being absorbed from the air to the water at a total
pressure of 1.50 atm abs and 30°C. The value of kc’ of 9.567 x 10-4 m/s has been predicted for
the gas-phase mass transfer coefficient. At a given point the mole fraction of H2S in the liquid
at the liquid-gas interface is 2 x 10-5 and PA of H2S in the gas is 0.05 atm. The henry’s
equilibrium relation is PA (atm) = 609 xA. Calculate the rate of absorption of H2S.

2. A 1-m square, thin plate of naphthalene is oriented parallel to an air stream flowing at 30 m/s.
The air is at 310 K and 1.013 x 105 Pa and the plate is at 300 K. Determine the rate of
sublimation from the top of the plate in kgmol/s.

The following properties for naphthalene are known:

Diffusivity of naphthalene at 298 K = 6.11 x 10-6 m2/s
Vapor pressure at 300 K = 25 Pa

3. An engineer at a pulp plant is considering the feasibility of sparging a waste gas stream
containing a small concentration of chlorine gas into a chlorine-bleaching unit in order to
augment the chlorine requirements for the unit. In this processing unit, the waste gas stream at
1 atm and containing only 0.2 mole% Cl2 is bubbled countercurrently to the absorbing water
stream. At the flow rate of the streams, the individual film coefficients are:

In the gas-film: ky’ = 2 kg mole / m2.h.mole fraction

In the liquid film: kx’= 5 kg mole / m2.h.mole fraction
At the temperature of the system, the following equilibrium relation applies:
PA = 3574.6 xA,

Where PA is the partial pressure of Cl2, in Pascal, in the gas phase and xA is the mole fraction
of Cl2 in the liquid phase.

The gas stream, containing 0.2 mol% chlorine gas, is in contact with the aqueous stream
containing 4.5 mole% Cl2.

Determine:
a. the overall coefficients, kx and ky;
b. the chlorine molar flux; and
c. the interfacial compositions (xAi,yAi and PAi)
