1.1 UNPACKING
All Kaysafe Engineering Limiteds products are tested and inspected during manufacture and prior to shipment.
However, the user should carry out an inspection at the time of unpacking to detect any possible damage that may have
been caused during shipment.
1.2 INSTALLATION
Simplex Baskets are delivered completely assembled for fitting into the pipeline. The following notes and checklist should
be observed prior to installation:a)
b)
c)
d)
e)

Strainers must be fitted into the pipeline in the correct orientation. The direction of flow is clearly marked on the
Strainer body.
Always check adjoining pipe-work for cleanliness.
When bolting up the pipeline flanges, ensure that the correct bolting and gaskets are used in accordance with
size, type and rating of the flange specification.
The Strainer wherever possible should be mounted into adjoining pipe-work in such a way as to avoid excessive
stress. All adjoining pipe-work should be adequately supported.
The fitting of a blow-down valve on the drain connection should also be considered as this can assist and reduce
maintenance.

IMPORTANT NOTES
i)
ii)
iii)

Ensure that the Strainer is in the correct orientation.

Gradually tighten the flange bolting in a diagonal sequence up to the torque specified see below.
Ensure adequate protective clothing is worn i.e. safety shoes, gloves etc. during installation.

2.1 COMMISSIONING
Ensure that the Strainer has been installed in accordance with the installation instructions.
Check that the flange bolting has been adequately tightened to the correct torque.
Seal off any drains connections and introduce the process flow (utilizing vents for dispelling air as appropriate).
Ensure that any O rings fitted (refer to Purchase Order), are compatible with the *service and temperature, see below:MATERIAL
Nitrile
Viton
Silicon
PTFE/Viton Encapsulated

For service compatibility, please refer to suitable compatibility chart.
** The gasket material may withstand higher temperatures than shown, this figure
has been used as it is the threshold of the Strainer material.
2.2 SPECIAL TOOLS
There are no special tools required for this equipment.

2.3 IMPORTANT
Kaysafe Engineering Strainers are designed to operate at full pressure @ 0C to ASME B16.5 for group 1.1 &
-29C for group 2.2 materials. Therefore as long as the operating conditions i.e. Pressure & Temperature fall within the
parameters of the relevant tables below, then the unit complies with the requirements of ASME B16.5 class 150 or 300
depending upon the rating of the inlet/outlet flange & material of construction being used.

The Strainer should be pressurised gradually up to approx. 50% of the normal working pressure check for leaks, any
detected leaks should be rectified accordingly.
Check any instrumentation where fitted in accordance with manufacturers instructions.
Upon satisfactory completion of all necessary checks, pressurise the Strainer up to full working pressure and flow-rate,
re-check for leaks and rectify accordingly.
3.1 OPERATION
Kaysafe Engineering Strainers are mechanical devices for removing solids & other contaminants from the process fluid
by means of a perforated plate/mesh screen.
Since they have no moving parts, they do not require any operating procedure.
3.2 SAFETY
We assume that when the unit is to be installed or maintenance work is carried out, particularly in hazardous service, that
all operators / maintenance personnel will be adequately protected in accordance with the relevant legislation & codes of
practice.
3.3 TRAINING
No special training is required for this type of equipment, however, we recommend that all installation and maintenance
work be carried out by a skilled / qualified competent fitter & within COSHH regulations.

4.1 MAINTENANCE
The only maintenance for this type of equipment is to periodically remove and clean the basket, which will depend largely
upon the amount of contaminants in the process fluid. The cleaning interval can best be determined from the installation
of a differential pressure gauge or by operational experience with subsequent maintenance periods.
When removing the basket, the following should be observed:a)

Before attempting any maintenance whatsoever, it is essential that the process line is depressurised by either a
by-pass system or by closing the inlet/outlet valves (if fitted) or by what ever means necessary to ENSURE
THAT THE PRESSURE AND FLOW HAVE BEEN SHUT-OFF AND THAT THE PIPELINE IS
DEPRESSURISED.

CAUTION!
Opening a closure can be a hazardous activity. All instructions should be read carefully by all personnel
engaged in the operation/maintenance of this equipment.
b)
c)
d)
e)

Vent off the strainer within strict safety precautions, to reduce hazardous conditions developing i.e. blow-out,
flashing etc, and drain unit.
Loosen the cover bolting slowly.
Remove the cover allowing access to the basket, utilising either handles or lifting lugs. (Cover handles are for
lifting the cover only and should not be used for lifting the complete unit).
The basket should be cleaned in a suitable medium compatible with the process fluid taking care not to damage
the basket during handling. DO NOT bang or hammer the basket. Where compressed air is available, the
contaminant may be blown off the perforated plate/mesh by applying air to the outside of the basket for In to
Out process flow and inside for Out to In.
WHEN USING COMPRESSED AIR ALWAYS WEAR THE APPROPRIATE
SAFETY GLASSES / CLOTHING.

Course retention strainer baskets may be cleaned using a stainless steel wire brush.
Always inspect the basket for any damage or wear. Damaged baskets should always be rectified or replaced
before re-assembly into the strainer.
Place a clean basket in to the strainer body. Ensure that the basket flange rests squarely on the seat inside the
body. The cover holds the basket firmly in place on its seat ensuring that no foreign material passes the basket.
It is recommended that a spare basket is kept on hand at all times.
When the basket in service is ready for cleaning, as indicated by an increased pressure drop across the strainer,
the spare basket can be installed immediately so that there is no delay in restarting the system due to having to
clean the basket. The cover seal should be examined and replaced if damaged. Where conditions permit the
bolt thread should be lubricated with a compatible lubricant. NEVER USE OIL OR GREASE ON STRAINERS
HANDLING OXYGEN.
Replace the cover and tighten the bolts.
Seal off any drain & vent connections and return line process, check for leaks and rectify accordingly.
Damaged or broken baskets should always be replaced with the correct replacements.

GENERAL NOTES
i)
All gaskets and seals should be inspected during installation and at regular scheduled maintenance
intervals. If there are any signs of damage or deterioration then they should be replaced.
ii)
All bolting should be checked periodically for tightness and retightened as necessary to the correct torque
value. Bolting should also be kept lubricated to aid maintenance.
iii)
Periodic inspections should be made to monitor corrosion and damage to the paint-work. Corrective action
should be carried out in accordance with approved procedures.
All damaged or worn parts should be replaced. All parts should be obtained direct from Kaysafe Engineering Limited
or approved distributor.
