Dear Parishioners,

FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT

Last Wednesday, Ash Wednesday, we were invited to set out on a

journey through Lent. Even if we didnt manage to receive ashes, the
invitation is there for all: Repent and believe in the Gospel/ Good News or Remember you
are dust and to dust you will return. Whatever words are used, the challenge and invitation
is clear. We are asked to make a new start; we are asked to launch out into the deep once
more.
Our Year of Mercy speaks to us of the Corporal and the Spiritual Works of Mercy. It
links with the traditional formula PRAYER, FASTING AND ALMS GIVING.
Notice in the Gospel today, Jesus is led by the Spirit into the wilderness he is praying
and fasting he is also tempted by the devil Anything to divert him from carrying out the
Fathers will. We may find it difficult to understand how Jesus could be tempted but we
know he was fully human as well as Divine. So he can be an example for us to follow.
We make Lenten Resolutions: here is a simple formula when we decide to make a
special effort to do something extra; it may be giving up something or doing something that
demands effort The important thing is not to let this Lent pass by without taking it
seriously.
This newsletter has several ideas to begin with if we havent already decided what to
do. Let us make the ashes in the sign of the cross last. Let Wednesday be a real symbol of
effort not just an empty gesture!
Delegation in Istanbul: As you read these words (on Sunday), I should be heading for
Istanbul. We are a party of 12 varied individuals seeking to visit Abdullah Ocalan in prison
on Imrali Island.
Have a look at some of the information Ive prepared and note the variety of the
characters in the Delegation people from the UK, South Africa, Canada, USA, Belgium,
Germany, Venezuela and Ecuador. The challenge is to raise the awareness internationally,
and eventually secure Mr Ocalans release from prison. Please keep us in your prayers. I
will try to keep you up to date on our progress over the three day visit.
Thanks to Fr Patrick who will be helping out in my absence
Have a wonderful week and Happy Half-Term to all concerned.

Fr Joe
