ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

A project to examine coal-fired power plant efficiency and performance

is a requirement in the fulfillment of the course Power Plant Design (MEEN
3315). This report responds to that, forming part of a work package carried
out under the guidance of Engr. Loida D. Santos, PPD Professor. The report
and its associated appendices, covering efficiency measurement and
reporting, were prepared by a working class of BSME V-1 under the
leadership of Peter John Canlas, Class President.

To God be the glory! I, the designer is wrapping this research as a gift

to Engr. Loida D, Santos, our loving professor and mother that guided us in
making this design possible. To our beloved professors, a million thanks to
the faculty of Mechanical Engineering Department for sharing their wisdom
and knowledge that serves as our foundation in designing the powerplant.
Also to my parents, for providing all my needs and necessities, love and
affection, care, and support in the duration of finishing this manuscript.
I also devote this thesis to my future son, may this be your guide in
designing your own powerplant and to Ivy Joy Rivera who served as my
inspiration during the hard times in finishing this research and the reason why
I take life's crazy challenge.

DESIGN AND LAYOUT PROBLEM

General
The power plant will contain 6 closed heaters and 2 open heaters. Steam will
be extracted from the turbine for process use and for an evaporator. Steam
also will be extracted at a lower pressure for use in a surface type of feed
water heater. The boiler room will be separated from the turbine hall, and in
addition to the boiler, will contain fan (forced draft), coal conveyor and
handling equipment and ducts.
Equipment to be located in the turbine hall; turbine generator, evaporator,
feed water heaters, boiler feed pump, condenser, circulating pump,
condensate pump, control board and overhead crane.

Data
Boiler: Water-tube type, 200% boiler rating, California Colorado
Boulder, subbituminous coal with 36.67% excess air. Ash removal
from pit below aisle in back of boiler.
Condenser: Circulating pump enters at 15.6C, surface type; 2-pass,
length of tube is 7.6ft . Condenser axis will be perpendicular to
turbine axis.
Evaporator: one for the entire plant, 100% spare. Make-up water enters
the evaporator at 15.6C at 0.5% of the total steam.
Surface Heaters: one per controlled-extraction, design on basis of heat
balance data.

Piping: of sufficient strength for pressure and temperatures involved,

flanged. Average flow velocity ranges from 100 m/min to 4500
m/min.

Requirements
In designing this power plant, a designer must consider all the problem
involving in the design. These are the problem which the designer must fulfill.
The designer must build a coal-fired power plant with a Plant Capacity of 150
MW.
The designer must consider the harmful effects of the Power Plant on the
environment as the effect of burning coals as its fuel.
The designer must compute and design the specifications of all power plant
components with accordance to standard design specified by power plant
design references and government policies.

Calculate mass balance for turbine hall and make schematic

diagram with flows, temperatures and enthalpies.
Calculate the boiler heat balance, inherent losses and select
boiler.
Calculate the surface requirements of condenser and select
condenser.
Calculate the size of, and select, evaporator and surface

heaters.
Calculate the size of boiler feed pump and select pump.
Calculate the size of condensate feed pump.
Make a power plant layout and piping layout.
Layout main steam pipe line and calculate its pipe size.
Determine the height and diameter of the chimney.

Compute for the variable loading of the consumer.

Make an analysis on fuels for fuels and combustion.
Calculate the cooling efficiency of the cooling tower.
The power plant must be situated in a best suitable location where no other
party will harm.
