IIT - PUBLIC ENGINEERING AND RESERACH INSTITUTE AT PALAKAD

INTRODUCTION
The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are autonomous public institutes of higher education,
located in India. They are governed by the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961 which has declared
them as "institutions of national importance", and lays down their powers, duties, and framework
for governance etc. The Institutes of Technology Act, 1961 lists sixteen institutes located at
Chennai, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Mumbai, Roorkee, Bhubaneswar, Gandhinagar,
Hyderabad, Indore, Jodhpur, Mandi, Patna, Ropar and Varanasi.
In 2014, six new IITs were announced by the government. Indian Institute of Technology
Palakkad (IIT Palakkad) is an autonomous premier engineering and technology university located
in Palakkad, Kerala. It is one of the six new IITs proposed in the 2014 Union budget of India. It
started functioning from 3rd August in a temporary campus at Ahalia Integrated campus, Palakkad.
While the permanent campus would be coming up at Pudussery West in 500 acres of land. The
land acquisition for the permanent campus of the IIT is completed.
AIM
To develop sensitivity towards campus planning for tangential educational strategies while
incorporating concepts of interactivity within it.
OBJECTIVE
Understanding the ideology of the college and translating it into the built form.
To provide a creative atmosphere in which higher studies and research thrive both among the
students and the faculty.
To provide realistic and concrete ideas to institutional planning.
To provide an open and dynamic environment conducive to learning and innovative
exploration.
To understandand the design process and role of architecture in the design of educational
institution.
IMPORTANCE AND SCOPE
This is a realistic project, which have an opportunity to grow in real life in future.
Urban development
This project will help in generating the progressive forces of the nation and fulfilling its
aspirations.
This project will encourage social interactions with cultural activities to enrich the behaviour of
the campus as well as the region too.

LIMITATION
Limited to academic area. Cost estimation, construction methods, standards have not been
addressed in the project.
REQUIREMENTS
Admin area, academic area includes class rooms, workshops, library, computer labs, language
labs, school, residential accommodation for its students, faculty, administrative and supporting
staff , mess, a hospital, recreational facilities like shopping centres, food shops, a gym, a
swimming pool, play ground, indoor stadium, JEE/ GATE office, OAT, community hall and club,
auditorium, bank ,ATM counters.

SITE
The land at Pudussery West in Palakkad which was identified to set up the IIT main campus. In
the 500 acres of land, boarded on one side by the mountains and just a few meters away from the

Coimbatore- Kanyakumari National Highway and a few kilometers from the Palakkad (Pkd) railway
junction.

Academic zone it consists of admin block, library, 16 department block, workshop,


government hospital, stadium, OAT, central store, cafe coffee day / tata book house, industrial
consultancy and sponsored research centre, staff canteen, new sports complex.
Hostel zone - it consists of 18 hostel among three are girls hostel and 15 boys hostel,
students activity centre, students facility centre, sports complex, himalaya (Mega mess).
