Glacier Crossing

Scenario

Task

Constraint

High on San Raphael glacier in Chile, your group has to cross

an unstable and unpredictable area of ground. Within the
glacier are deep crevasses that could open at any time.
A previous expedition has highlighted the areas where weight
can be safely displaced. They have marked these areas with
glacier crates.
Using the equipment provided, your group has to transfer all
team members and their equipment across the glacier via the
crates.
Any team members or equipment that falls into the crevasses
zone, results in
1. One fall results in breaking the snow
crust all team and equipment back to
start
2. Second fall opens crevasses fully, though
self rescue is possible all team and
equipment back to start. Non verbal
communication for 5 minutes
Nonverbal communication is the act of giving or
exchanging information without using any spoken words
and any kinds of sounds produced by mouth.

3. Third fall one person to be blindfolded for 5 minutes. All to

restart.
4. Subsequent falls - team restarts every time. Silence and
blindfold penalty will be enforced again only after the 5
minutes penalty time from second and third fall is up.
Unstable ground is marked by the first pot onwards. Team
member cannot step on the ground beyond the first pot. Loss
of balance and touching the ground is considered a fall.
Time limit for this task is 20 minutes.

Facilitation Guide
Always check with the coordinator what was facilitated in the last activity. Use the
same facilitation points again if it is an issue which is important. Preferably pick
another facilitation point so as not to repeat the same lessons again and again.
Remember, there are many games and danger of over-facilitation.

process?
