Willow Grove Students Skype With Experts At NASA

By J. L. Shively
ourth grade students at Willow Grove School launched
into learning with a presentation from NASA experts
on the solar system with an emphasis on their home
planet, Earth.
The darkly lit classroom gave off the illusion of sitting in
outer space as an image of the Earth from a satellite photo
was projected onto the Smartboard.
This particular Friday turned out to be unlike just any other
day. Fri., Feb. 5 at Willow Grove was an important day of
learning about science in an exciting way. The room hummed
with the students excitement as the final preparations for the
live video presentation were made.
Instead of the usual routine, the fourth grade students, split
into two groups, assembled at different times in a classroom
for a special Skype presentation with NASA personnel.
This program was brought to Willow Grove School by
Kristyn Damadeo, an alumni of the Hackettstown School
District and communications manager for Science Systems
and Applications, Inc., a contract company with NASA.
Damadeos project team, SAGE III/ISS, is located at the
NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC) in Hampton, VA.
With a degree in communication arts from Ramapo College, Damadeo started out her career writing for a newspaper,
eventually moving on to work for a wire service where she
wrote about renewable energy and politics. It was through
this job that she recognized her interest in being involved with
something that helped people.
Her husband, Robert Damadeo, is an atmospheric scientist
with NASA and eventually a job opportunity which combined all of her interests presented itself with the company.
I didnt even know this was a job I could be doing growing
up so I think its great to get out and tell them [the students]
about all the options they have, she says.
I really like connecting, especially with students and encouraging them to study STEM fields, Damadeo notes as

her inspiration behind offering this program to schools.

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math
and covers fields of education which many students have a
budding interest in.
Damadeos mother, Karen Echochard, has been a special
needs teacher at Willow Grove for the past 16 years and
helped to make the program possible at the school. The
presentation helps extend and enrich the students learning
and gives them the opportunity to have questions answered
by experts, Echochard explains.
The program is offered specifically to fourth grade students because it ties in with their curriculum. I work with
some fourth grade students and the fourth grade science curriculum includes the solar system, Echochard states, which
is why this program is offered to help spark their excitement
for science as well as help them connect what they learn in
the classroom to real world situations.
The program which Damadeo has brought to Willow
Grove is part of the NASA Day of Education, which was developed by the Science Directorate at Langley.
This is the third year students have had the opportunity to
become involved with this program and actively ask questions with experts through skyping.
The use of this media allowed for an open pathway from
students in their classroom to experts at the NASA Digital
Learning Network in LaRC in VA.
The presentation was entitled Look At Earth and began
with questioning the students about what they knew about
NASA. After listening to excited answers Damadeo announced, We [at NASA] are all explorers, but the students
can all be explorers too.
After a presentation showing stunning images of the Earth
from space, Damadeo turned the show over to the students,
allowing them to ask questions about NASA and the solar
system.
They ask really impressive questions, Damadeo says. I

am always shocked by the complex things they want to know

about.
Students at Willow Grove were no different, posing such
questions as Why does Titan have an atmosphere and
Why does Uranus spin on its side. Robert Damadeo answered each question with ease, giving the students an answer
they could understand and appreciate.
This same presentation has allowed the Damadeos to answer students questions across the country. Each year the
program is enhanced, taking into account any new available
resources so that the program is better catered to what stucontinued on page 2

LeGrand Shares Inspirational Story At Trinity United Methodist Church

By Anastasia Marchese
n Fri., Feb. 5, Eric LeGrand came to the Trinity
United Methodist Church, Hackettstown and spoke
to a full house of rapt listeners.
Five years ago, Eric Le Grand's life changed forever
during his junior year at Rutgers University. Rutgers was

playing Army in football, and during the fourth quarter Le

Grand was hoping to get the ball back for his team. Tragically he was injured in the process and broke his C3 and
C4 vertebrae. He was unable to breathe on his own. He was
paralyzed from the neck down. Once he was taken to the
hospital, the doctors didnt believe he would ever be able
to eat normally or breathe on his own again. He was being
sustained by a ventilator. His battle had only begun.
LeGrand refused to focus on how bad his situation was,
but instead chose to believe. He chose to be thankful for
the things that were good in his life. He chose to use this
experience for good and he is still making these choices to
this day.
I truly believe that this happened for a reason, he said
to the audience. No matter what, God has a plan for you.
Even if you dont know what it is right now.
During the course of the evening Eric shared many stories about people he has met during his fight against paralysis. No matter how bad you think you have it, there is
always someone who has it worse.
He shared sad stories of people who lost the fight against
paralysis and/or cancer and he said, How fortunate am I?
I know it sounds crazy, but there are thousands of people
who would like to be me in my shoes right now.
One of his greatest blessings is the people who have surrounded him with love and support. When asked by an audience member who inspires him, Eric was quick to praise

his mother.
She gave up her life so that I could be healthy and have
the best of everything.
His mother quit her job and stayed in the hospital during
LeGrands five month of recovery after his accident. She
still drives him to his physical therapy workouts, his speaking engagements, and his doctor appointments.
I want to get better, so that she doesnt always have to
take care of me.
Eric has already overcome many of the odds against him
and can eat normally and breaths on his own. He has regained sensation throughout his body and is able to move
his shoulders. The medical community has no real understanding of why he has recovered to this point, but LeGrand
credits God.
Le Grand is also very excited about the possible cures
being studied by the Christopher Reeves Foundation. He
truly believes that someday he will walk out to the MetLife
field where he was injured, lay down on the spot where he
fell, and then get up. His amazing faith and his desire to
help others, instead of focusing on his injury, is an inspiration to others to work and believe that they can overcome
their own struggles.
The audience at Trinity gave both LeGrand and his
mother standing ovations, and most people seemed to feel
that it would be a fitting tribute if they went on clapping
all night.

Join The Warren County Parks Foundation

he Warren County Parks Foundation,

a recently formed New Jersey Nonprofit Corporation, is looking for
trustees, volunteers, and donations to help
fulfill the organizations mission to support
Warren Countys growing park system.
The Parks Foundation was created to protect and enhance these parks, provide for additional recreational activities, preserve
historic sites and educate visitors about the
natural, historical, and cultural significance
of these cherished areas. By working closely
with the Warren County Board of Recreation
Commissioners and the Warren County
Board of Chosen Freeholders, members of
the Parks Foundation will play a critical role
in helping to shape the development of nearly
a dozen county parks, better their community,
and foster an appreciation for local history
and the great outdoors.
Were really excited to be launching this
organization, said Corey Tierney, director of
Preservation for Warren County and a founding trustee of the Parks Foundation. Warren
County is blessed with so many hard-working and generous people who take time out
of their busy lives to volunteer in our parks.
Thanks to some incredibly thoughtful and

selfless pioneers, weve made tremendous

progress enhancing these parks over the
years.
Warren County is also blessed with exceptional natural beauty and fascinating local
history. In a sustained effort, and with the
publics consistent support, the county has
acquired nearly 2,000 acres of parkland along
with many historic sites over the decades.
We have some really terrific parks here
and because of that, were seeing more and
more visitors every year, said David Detrick, Warren County Board of Recreation
commissioner and founding trustee of the
Parks Foundation. The volunteers we have
are straining to keep up. These areas are there
for the public to enjoy and they help draw
visitors to our region, so its a good problem
to have. But we need more volunteers to get
involved with the Parks Foundation, to lend
us a helping hand however they can, and to
take ownership of these beautiful sites because these parks really do belong to everyone.
Michael Muckle, director of the New Jersey Youth Corps and Founding Trustee of the
Parks Foundation, said Volunteering to clear
trails is certainly one great way to stay in

shape. But there are also many other ways

people can get involved. Were looking for
people of all ages and varying skillsets. Were
looking for leaders to become Trustees, were
looking for professionals with experience in
business and finance, were looking for people with experience in the trades, were looking for historians, naturalists, and writers,

were looking for educators and event planners, were really just looking for anyone
who can help us make a difference.
If interested in learning more about the
Warren County Parks Foundation and about
how to get involved, email wcparksfoundation@gmail.com; or call 908- 453-3252, ext.

to the American Association of Retired Persons, older men and women who want to go
back to school do not necessarily have to
bankroll that expenditure on their own.
AARP notes that the Internal Revenue Service offers tax breaks such as the American

take advantage of to lessen the blow of tuition

todays men and women over 50 were in college. Older men and women may also be able

their kids did not end up needing. AARP also
notes that men and women over 50 who want

Layups 4 Life Continues To Fight Cancer On The Court

By J. L. Shively
ith winter finally rearing its head, spring feels
very far away indeed. But with something to
look forward to, perhaps winter will not feel
so very far after all. On Sun., April 10, Dan Exter is set
to be hosting the second annual Layups 4 Life challenge
and registration for the event is now open.
Exter, a Roxbury High School alumni, always had a
passion for the game of basketball and his passion did
not fade when he was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in the summer of 2013. Having fought his
cancer and won, Exter explains, I wanted to give back
and help the place which inevitably saved my life.
Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC)
is where Exter received his treatments and it is this center
where the money raised from the Layups 4 Life challenge
will be donated. Having had his share of varsity court
time at RHS, Exter decided it would be the perfect place
to hold his challenge. I wanted to combine my passion
with a cause and that is how Layups 4 Life was born,
Exter explains.
Cancer research is a long and ongoing process which
is why funds are always needed for the research as well
as clinical trials which will aid in working towards a
cure. Exter explains that after last years challenge he

divided the donations up into three different categories

all within MSKCC. The categories were General
Leukemia, Pediatric Leukemia and a Bone Marrow Research Foundation. Although disbursement of funds has
not yet been decided for this year, it is likely that the
money raised from the challenge will again go to the
same categories within MSKCC.
The Layups 4 Life main challenge consists of a 3-on3 basketball tournament open to both boys and girls ages
15 and up. This challenge invites Roxbury residents to
compete and, as Exter explains, the challenge is open to
the Roxbury community and beyond, having stated that
lasts years event consisted of teams from all over the
east coast such as participants from New York, Connecticut and Massachusetts.
The teams can be co-ed and in the past had members
from ages 15 up to 50. The cost for registration is $25
per team member and teams consist of four members.
The cost of registration goes up to $30 per team member
after April 4.
This tournament gives a chance for anyone and everyone to show their skills on the court as well as an opportunity to honor family and friends who continue their
battle with cancer. Exter recalls that many teams make
t-shirts with their team name and one team last year had

shirts to honor their friend still fighting cancer. This tournament is a great reminder of the strides that have been
made to combat cancer, with Exter being living proof,
but it is also proof that the battle has not yet won for
everyone.
An overall winner of the tournament will be chosen at
the end of the event. Last year the winners were presented with a gym bag with the Layups 4 Life logo on it

and spectators who participated in the raffle and silent auction were able to win an
array of gift certificates donated by local
businesses as well as professional sports
memorabilia. Exter says a prize is hopefully in the works for this years winners
as well.
With last years tournament the Layups
4 Life challenge raised more than $10,000
with 40 teams registered to play and 300
spectators in the stands, the Layups event
had quite the draw. With this years event
drawing closer challengers, seasoned and
rookie, are invited to come out and register.
There is more than one way to participate. A group can register a team to take
part in the tournament. Teams consists of
four members, giving the 3-on-3 chal-

lengers a one substitute.

Even for those who wish to stay off the
court there is a place to help out, Exter explains that making a donation, becoming
a sponsor or even just coming by on the
day of the event to take part in the silent
auction and raffle as well as cheering on
the teams helps out just as much.
The event is scheduled to be held at the
ROHS on Sun. April 10; doors open at
10:30 a.m.; team registration confirmation
is at 10 a.m.
For more information about Layups 4
Life or to become a sponsor email Exter
at layups4life@gmail.com. To donate to
the program or to register for the event go

loop follow Layups 4 Life on Twitter and

Who Else Wants to Lose Up To 24 Pounds In The Next 12 Weeks...GUARANTEED?

Since starting my training, I have lost 10 pounds in a matter of

weeks.- Delores, Hackettstown, NJ

If You Dont Get Your Body Back In 12 Weeks...YOU DONT PAY! Its Just That Simple.
Finally...A PROVEN & GUARANTEED Body Transformation System
That Works EVERY TIME... Even If Youve Struggled In The Past!
It is a known fact that having a
scheduled appointment with a trainer
can mean the difference between success and failure for many people.
Its just too easy to hit the snooze
button or drive past the gym and go
home after a long day, if you dont
feel like working out.
When you have an appointment
with a trainer who is expecting you
to show up at a certain time, and will
contact you if you dont show up, it

makes it much more difficult to give in

to your urges to skip your workout. In
the end, when people tell us that they
would have skipped the workout if it
werent for us being there (which we
hear quite often) they are very happy that they didnt play hooky, and
almost always feel much better after
the workout.
The key to optimal fitness results
is being accountable. Whether its
working with a personal trainer, a

workout partner, or answering to a

friend or family member in regard to
your exercise or nutrition program,
accountability is the key to success.
Without it, its just too easy to slip
back into the unhealthy lifestyles that
get us into trouble in the first place.
If you dont comply with your fitness
blueprint, you wont get results, and if
you dont get results, you bail out on
your program.

Since joining the gym, and training with Myke and Dan, I have
participated in multiple 5Ks, Mudderella, Warrior Dash, a 10K, and
I signed up for a Tough Mudder and Spartan Race in the Spring. I
never thought in a million years, that I would even be in the physical condition to compete in these events, but each one has been a
success. Achieve 24 is like family to me. Myke and Dan challenged
me even when I gave them opposition. I am amazed with my physical and emotional results. I am still not confident in wearing shorts,
but Myke has promised me, that I will! I cannot thank the friendly
staff at Achieve 24 and Myke and Dan for they have truly changed
my life.- Heather, Port Murray, NJ

Warren County Hall Of Fame Looking For 2016 Candidates

n the past few years, the Warren County

Hall of Fame has inducted some of the
most amazing people from the county
into its elite club. While some may be somewhat considered "household names," others
are just folks who have gone an extra yard to
make things better for those around them.
That's the beauty of the Warren County Hall
of Fame. Persons don't have to hit 500
homers or throw 500 touchdowns, or win two
Emmy awards to be eligible. Making a dif-

ference is all that matters.

The committee seeks anyone who is Hall
of Fame caliber to be nominated for the Class
of 2016.
What started as a simple idea has truly become a go-to event, and a prestigious honor,
for many. The Hall of Fame dinner has been
a sellout the past three years as folks come
out to support the County's best.

Hackettstown Woman Named

CAREGiver Of The Year By Home Instead Senior Care

he Mary Steibel CAREGiver of the Year

award is one of the highest honors in the
Home Instead Senior Care network. Every
year, a CAREGiver who personifies the values of
Home Instead is recognized with this achievement.
The annual CAREGiver of the Year nomination is a sacred tradition in the franchise office.
CAREGivers are each unique and like the colorful
threads that are woven into a beautiful tapestry,
each one is absolutely integral to the other! Men
and women who chose this vocation, this life
course that would lead them on a journey that
would forever impact their lives and the lives of
the seniors they touch!
Kathy Slater, who resides in Hackettstown, is
the CAREGiver of the Year 2015. Slater arrived
at the Home Instead office in July of 2010 inquiring about employment. She had a full time job,
but she enjoyed seniors and was seeking some
part time work. She has shared 5,234 hours of her
mornings, afternoons, evenings, overnights, and
weekends with her Home Instead Senior Care
Clients. She is embraced by the families she
serves witness to her care of their loved ones.

One special family came to know Slater as she

was their weekend CAREGiver. She would arrive
at their home with a bag full of shelled peanuts,
bird seed, and treats for the wildlife. She would
arrange the goodies around the base of the Blue
Atlas Cedar trees that her clients could observe
from their living room window. This provided
them with hours of entertainment and conversation as they were amused by the antics of the
squirrels, chipmunks, rabbits and various other
critters who came to dine.
Kathy also leads by example. This spring,
Slater attended weeknight and Saturday classes at
a community college to become a licensed Certified Home Health Aide. She initiated this on her
own and made the investment in herself and her
clients so that she could continue providing them
care as their personal care needs progress.
She made a choice to share her life, values,
show compassion, and listen intently and to see
it through. Slater will do anything to see her
family of clients smile and she loves them, no
matter what.

Did You Know?

ccording to the popular website

ThePeopleHistory.com, the average
price for a new car in 1986 was
$9,255. While figures for 2016 have yet to be
determined, in September 2015, the automotive resource Kelley Blue Book
(www.kbb.com) reported that the average
transaction price for light vehicles in August
2015 was $33,543. Those figures should raise
eyebrows among consumers, as they illustrate just how much more expensive new cars

have become over the last three decades. The

U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer
Price Index inflation calculator indicates that
$9,255 in 1986 had the same buying power
as $20,041.47 in 2015, leaving consumers in
2015 well short of the necessary funds
needed to purchase new vehicles. If new vehicle buyers in 1986 were faced with similar
average car costs as buyers in 2015 faced,
they would have needed $15,489.91 to drive
a new car home from the dealership.

Winning Back Weeknight Cooking

oms pride themselves on serving

their families wholesome, homemade meals. But heres the reality:
60 percent of moms think that coming up
with dinner ideas is more difficult than getting their children to go to bed on time. Moreover, 61 percent of moms frequently order
takeout or go out to eat because they dont
have the ingredients on-hand to make dinner.
Its time for a new strategy.
When it comes to mealtime, a wellstocked pantry can be the difference between
culinary success and a dinner failure. With a
pantry full of canned foods, a delicious and
nutritious homemade meal is just minutes
away.
Its no secret that canned foods are convenient, but did you know that cans are also
one of the best ways to get food from the
farm to your familys table? Canned fruits
and vegetables are picked and packed when
theyre at their peak of ripeness and nutrition,

sealing in their freshness and flavor. Just like

home canning, the canning process locks in
foods natural goodness so its at arms reach
whenever youre ready to get cooking.
A pantry stocked with canned ingredients
is also a source of recipe inspiration. Staples
such as canned chicken, corn, green chilies,
olives, beans and tomatoes atop lettuce combine to create a wholesome Chicken Burrito
Salad the whole family will enjoy. And in less
than 30 minutes, a box of fettuccine and a can
of spinach transform into a hearty Pasta with
Spinach Pesto.

Heath Village Resident Displays Her

Counted-Cross Stitch Creations

elen Lell, a new Heath Village

resident, recently presented her
collection of counted-cross stitch
artwork at the Gallery at the Village.
After her husband passed away in
1984, Helen began doing counted-cross

stitch to occupy her time.

It takes a tremendous amount of patience and talent to create these works of
art. Each piece can take up to a year to
complete. Lell has a special interest in Nacontinued on page 30

tive American Indians and featured this
culture in its own room in her former
Toms River home. However, one of her
most prized pieces is that of her dog,
Lady Lell, which was done using a custom made pattern.
Helen has been a member of the Order
of the Eastern Star for many years. She
donated one of her counted-cross stitch
pieces, an 11x14 piece featuring hot-air
balloons, to the Order which raffled it off
for more than $1,700; the proceeds of
which were donated to a charitable cause.

Her current project is again for the Order.

Each year, the officers of The Grand
Chapter Order of Eastern Star make a gift
to the Grand Matron and Grand Patron.
The gift this year is a counted-cross stitch
quilt. All of the Grand Officers make two
squares.

Did You Know?

ccording to the National Sleep Foundation, a short nap of 20 to 30 minutes can improve alertness and
performance without creating feelings of
grogginess or interfering with nighttime
sleep. A NASA study that examined sleepy
pilots and astronauts found that those who
napped for 40 minutes improved their performance by 34 percent. While napping can
be beneficial, napping can have a negative

impact as well. For example, those who nap

too late in the day may struggle to get a decent night's rest later that night, when the
length and quality of sleep may not be as long
or as strong as it would had they not napped
so late in the day. Men and women who find
themselves suddenly need naps despite no
obvious cause of fatigue should consult their
physicians, as this might be indicative of a
sleep disorder or another medical condition.
