Pastoral Corner
The announcement last weekend by Fr. Eric Andrews, CSP, our Paulist president, came as a shock to some,
maybe expected by others but hoping that such an announcement would not have to be made. We, Paulists and
parishioners, did not want to hear or bear this news. What Eric did and what other past Paulist presidents have had
to do is the most difficult thing for us as a religious community to do; to leave places we have called home for decades
and more. Paulist foundations here in Portland, or across the country are a part of the fabric of our life together, even
if we have never been assigned to some of them. They are extensions of our life and mission. We, as a community,
rejoice with those who are rejoicing and celebrating their accomplishments, as if they were our own. We also mourn
as a community, when our foundations are hurting. Foundations are not just brick and mortar but living-breathing
faith-extensions of the life and mission of our founder Isaac Thomas Hecker, CSP. All of us have a part to play in
Giving the Word a Voice in our contemporary world.
The word that keeps coming to mind is reconfiguration. Sometimes we might daydream about changing our
life wonder what could be if only. Sometimes we actually get up the gumption to actually make necessary or
dreamed of changes; but mostly we dont. We settle for what is comfortable. We like change, we just dont like
changing. So, circumstances come along and force us to change. I like the word reconfiguration because it means
bring forward all that is of value in our lives and reconfiguring it in a new situation. It isnt a denial of what has gone
before, not a rejection of any sort but an act of bringing forward the best of who we are.
Now it is time to reboot and reconfigure our life as a parish and our lives as Paulist Priests. Our parish was
born 102 years ago of Italian immigrants. We Paulists embraced them and saw the possibilities of extending the
welcoming message of this faith community far beyond our boundaries. Paulists cared for the local faith community
while Paulist missionaries in residence took the message of our founder, Fr. Isaac Thomas Hecker, CSP, all over and
beyond the Northwest. We have a rich heritage and foundation on which to build a bright future. The hallmark of the
parish and of the Paulists is hospitality. We have heard time and again, if you have a problem and are afraid to talk
to a priest, go see the Paulists. Being available and willing to listen is core to our Paulist mission.
Our parish certainly picked up this core attribute. We have been known in the Archdiocese of Portland as the
go to place if you feel you dont fit in anywhere else. It is all the people of St. Philips that sent out this word by their
example of hospitality. This attitude of gratitude and hospitality is deeply woven into our parish life and will not easily
be forgotten or become dormant.
Some Paulists will be taken out of this parish community but you cannot take the Paulist spirit out of this faith
community. That will remain albeit in new forms. The question for each and every one of us is how do we reboot and
reconfigure this unique Spirit and carry it forward. The future depends on how we answer this question individually
and as a faith community. We can look forward to a future brighter than anything in the past. This is our hope and it
can be our destiny.

NO LENTEN RETREAT
Due to the busy Lenten schedule we will
NOT have a Lenten retreat. We
apologize for the confusion.
STORIES
We are still looking for stories on where
your family originated and you arrived in
Portland. One parishioner is a descendant
of slaves & another escaped on a small
fishing boat. Check out the map in the
foyer of the church for these and other
interesting immigration stories.
During Lent this year, instead of several small groups meeting in various
homes, we are offering Healing Relationships with Pope Francis in
Carvlin Hall on Monday evenings, 6:30-8pm, with prayer, summation
of topic for the evening, small group discussion and large group sharing.
Each week is a separate unit so you can come whenever your schedule
allows.
