ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY

In Malaysia, the topic of sexuality is a taboo subject that has widely become important
issues to be discussed, not only in the home but also in schools. It became a popular subject
among the Malaysian even people from outside of Malaysia. I wonder, how could they got the
knowledge about the sex educations? In my opinion, mostly they got the knowledge about sex
education from media social that give a lot of information in kind of video, image, etc. With all
the information, it will attract more people especially the teenagers, to know and learn more
about it. Lastly, when most of them are more concerned that by providing information on sex
will lead to the curiosity which means it will end up to sexual experimentation.
For me, the teaching of sex education in school can be a considered as a positive step in
ensuring that the young adults get necessary moral tools which it will enable them to survive in
an environment that heavily corrupted by media social advertisements and obscene content.
According to Oakley (1995), a good moral results to a healthy sexual behavior and avoidance of
disease. Because of some people especially the teenagers, get the wrong information about sex
education and they didnt learn carefully about this subjects that can make the statistics of
unmarried young girl were pregnant become higher than other country.
Not only that, there are many newborn babies that have been found, even dead or live in
the most unlikely places like rubbish dump, etc. Thats why I thought it will be fine if us learn or
get more information about sex education from the source that we can trust. The reason is to
avoid the bad things that will happen if we dont take a step to avoid it. Another things that will
happen and became a controversial issues and make the statistics of sex education in Malaysia
higher than usual is rape cases. These worrying statistics will keep increasing, if there is no any
action were took to prevent this situation.
The limited of knowledge about the body and sexuality due to sensitivity of this issues,
make the people especially adolescents receive inadequate education, guidance and services on
reproductive health. Therefore, I thought it will be a valuable satisfied if Malaysian government
had come out with the suggestion to introduce the sexual education to the people especially to
the youth or school teenager.

For our knowledge, according to Oakley (1995) again, sex education refer to the
knowledge about sexual reproduction, sexual intercourse, reproductive health, emotional
relations, reproductive rights and responsibilities, contraceptives and other issues relating to
human sexual behavior.
It seems that Malaysians most the largely Malay film and drama. The directors are only
keen to make the movies and dramas that revolve around a taboo subject to our decent Eastern
culture such as sex. That drives me to think that maybe, just maybe sex is no longer a taboo
today. I cant blame them because the three letter word S.E.X. sells. If you dont believe me,
heres a list of famous and box office local movies that talks sex. From the 90s like Isteri,
Perempuan dan , Black Widow, Lenjan right down to the millennia like Ombak Rindu.
Many people perhaps had watched the Suamiku series which boast titles such as Suamiku
Sotong, Suamiku Mr. Perfect 10, Suamiku Ustaz and so on.
The one thing that binds these movies is the underlying message of sexual connotation
behind them. What I despise the most is all of these movies at some point if not all them are still
sexist. Perhaps, many of women's groups have publicly raises their concern over this matter for
the last two decades or so, but the fact remains, not much has changed. Indeed, change has come
too little and too, too slow. Viewers are still being bombarded with sex and women are still
unabatedly being used as the selling tools.
Honestly, I cant even think of one particular Malay movie that is ever so sincere to
portray the strong will and goodness of a woman and her contributions to the family institution.
Many might agreed that the whole Suamiku series is not solely about sex, but mainly on the
holy matrimony and union of a man and a woman in Islam. But then, what does a marriage
comprise of if it is not sex? Now, since the censorship board and the ministry in charge sees that
there is no harm in rolling out these movies to the public, no qualms at all with young eyeballs
watching these movies, then, why is it that we still contemplate and hesitate on having a proper
sex education for the people? Especially for school students? If we are selling and promoting the
innuendos of sex to our children, then what's stopping us from explaining this part of life called
sex to them?

Well, you see sex education in Malaysia has previously and consistently been a majorly
begin-end affair. The multiple subjects of where do babies come from, the story of the start of the
humankind that is so crucial to every human being has only the minimal amount of honour and
space, squeezed in between some aspects of reproductive health subject that is incorporated into
other school subjects and only to be taught at the age of 16 when the average age for a kid to
reach puberty is between nine to fourteen years old. Not all the things that the government does
towards sex education were inapt though. I applaud the government for its effort to add in some
elements of knowledge on reproductive system with a new curriculum that brings sex education
to 11-year-olds.
But then, that alone is not sufficed, to say the least. That is just a small fragment of it all
and there were even reports saying that school teachers are uncomfortable to talk openly about
sex to their school kids in class especially the younger ones. How is that even so? And if that's
the case, then maybe we should school the teacher first before the kids? Really, where do
prepubescent kids go to seek for crucial information on sex? The Internet? That is even
detrimental. Google the word sex and you will get all things porn.
Children need to have a clear picture on sex only because sex is one of the facts of life
just like death, the food we take in, the air we breathe etc. Especially on keeping safe from
harmful predators and knowing how our body really works, loving our body and respecting both
genders alike. Proper sex education will help them a lot in facing adulthood, their rights,
violations and most importantly on how and what to do when faced with challenges of growing
up and the changes in their body that is definite and inevitable.
Record shows that there is a worrying amount of babies abandoned and killed each year
in Malaysia with at least 100 babies were disposed by their mothers. There was also statistics
showing that in every 10 days, an abandoned baby is found in KL alone. I blame it all on the lack
and inexistence of proper sex education in our country.
Even with the whole baby hatch system, the help lines and the whole free and accessible
counseling, our people are still dumping and killing babies. How do we prevent this number
from rising? How can we stop baby dumping when we cant even discuss honestly about how

babies are made? How do we train our boys to be good and responsible husbands or boyfriends
when we often cringe by the sound and sight of condoms?
My point here is, if the government feel that Malaysians are ready to be bombarded with
issues on marriage and genders for which both boil down to sex, like in our movies and dramas,
then why are our youngsters perceived as being unready for a good and proper sex education
which includes teaching on contraception, sexual transmitted diseases, the whole nine yards?
Should sex be a taboo in this modern age of advanced technology and borderless world? Indeed,
education is key and knowledge is king.
In Malaysia too, there are also have been several debates as to weather sex educations
should be taught in school or not. A small percentage of the entire Malaysia population said that
the sex education should be never taught in school, while most of the Malaysians were agreed
that sex education is as essential as any other type of education in schools.
For such of people that doesnt know anything about sex educations, they might think
that sex education will destroy the morality of people. Although, maybe for them, the sex
education lowers the morality of people by teaching the students or teenagers about how to uses
a condoms and actually, it should be taught weather in primary or secondary school. One of the
reasons is to prevent sexual diseases and teenagers pregnancy. Other than that, it is indeed a need
in case of parent absence and its give youth the idea of what is right and what is wrong.
Other says that having a sex education only encourage the teenager or students to engage
in sexual intercourse and that it leads to sexual diseases and teenage pregnancy. But, the truth is
sex education doesnt encourage the teenager to do it. To prove it, according to Bleakly (2006),
in a survey conducted, only about 17 percent of the respondents give answered that sex education
does encourage the teenager to do it and the remaining of 83 percent were strongly disagreed.
Nowadays, kids are becoming more sexually active at an earlier age. Sixty-six percent of
high school mostly in America had done it. These kids are in danger of sexuality transmitted
diseases and there is also a big possibility for them to get pregnant. Thats why sex education
should be taught to prevent these things from happened. In sex education, they are also taught
that they only can have a sexual intercourse after they got married.

In case, the parents that always not aware about their children activities that involved sex
education. In my opinion, sex education should be taught to them politely or they should learned
it from an educated and responsible adult, instead of learning it from the media social network or
from their friends. There will always peers who would badly influence others, this phrases
automatically remind me about my classmates when I was in High school. They are only
fourteen to fifteen years old but the words that come out of their mouth are foul sex language. I
was really surprised and our homeroom teacher didnt even intend to lecture them.
Teenagers now can easily access any kind of site on the internet that contains adult
content or more like pornographic materials. Thats why sex education subjects should be
implemented in school. It is better for teenagers to be informed earlier because it will keep
remind them about it, even when they grown up as well as they will be more exposed to it
through their peers and the media. People might says that sex education teaches the teenagers
about how sexual intercourse is done. But the truth that I know about sex education is to lets the
teenagers know more about the consequences and the truth things about sex. One of the truth
about sex is people that always make sex as their habits will likely suffer emotional or get mental
despression which may lead them to suicide crime.
Apart from that, the teenagers are also informed that its only for the unity and
procreation of married couples who are committed to each other. Not even that, they are also
informed that they will know the true propose of sex when they grown up as an adults.
In conclusion, sex education should be taught in schools because it is better to consider
health than beliefs and we should consider reality. Since immorality cannot be eliminated and
teenagers cannot be stopped from becoming sexually active, we should implement sex education
in schools, as early as primary school. It also the only savior for children whose parents are
always away from them and that is why sex education is needed so that they will not lose track
of the right path. Through sex education, students will be able to learn the truth about sex and
they will be able to refrain and control themselves. In essence, sex education is necessary
because the youth will inevitable encounter a situation in life where in knowledge regarding this
matter would be of help. Children cannot rely on media and on friends for information about sex,
rather they need to be properly educated about these things in order for them to realize the
importance of safe sex, the risks of sex disease, and the effects of high birth rate.
