The SGM is a learned society with 5,500 members world-wide. It aims both to promote the subject of microbiology and to represent the interests of professionals working in all areas of modern microbial science. Key activities include publishing four major journals and running international scientific conferences. The Society also supports microbiology in many other ways through its grants, prize lectures, education and public engagement activities, careers promotion and its high profile role in UK and international biological organizations. This work is carried by staff in partnership with the Society’s Council and the members. An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, flexible and self-motivated life sciences graduate to help run key activities in supporting member services, careers promotion and administration of grant schemes. Key attributes are: • A sound knowledge of microbiology or molecular biology • A firm understanding of the higher education sector and research community • Good oral and written communication skills • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills • Initiative and accuracy • Familiarity with IT packages such as Microsoft Office, Powerpoint & Adobe Creative Suite; experience with design and layout would be an advantage • The ability to juggle tasks and work under pressure • An awareness of current issues in STEM education and training would be helpful. Although the job is mainly office-based, applicants should be willing to work in the evenings and at weekends when necessary and to travel throughout the UK. Job Description Grants • Publicise and administer SGM grant schemes, including database management • Deal with enquiries, process applications, arrange payments, keep records • Supervise clerical support for the schemes Member Services •Assist with promotion of Society activities and membership recruitment •Keep publicity materials up-to-date, manage stocks and arrange distribution • Support Local Representative network in universities and institutions • Assist with SGM website, keeping pages updated and contributing to development of new initiatives • Assist with Microbiology Today as required, proofreading, supplying copy etc. Careers/Training/Personal Development Services • Maintain set of current SGM resources, update as required and create new ones • Deal with enquiries from schools, undergraduates, graduates, members of the public, careers services, Society members • Distribute SGM materials, keep records • Help to organise and attend schools/higher education careers events, sometimes in liaison with colleagues from other learned societies/scientific bodies • Provide support for personal development activities for early career microbiologists and students at SGM and other conferences • Maintain and assist the development of the SGM’s careers website General • Attend Society scientific conferences • Assist with other external relations activities as appropriate and provide cover for other staff on leave etc. The post is permanent and the successful applicant should be able to start as soon as possible. Starting salary Commensurate with qualifications and experience in the range: £22,753 – 27,930. Working for the SGM The Society offices are located in a pleasant commuter village just south of Reading.
