A one year course delivered by distance learning

commencing 28th October 2002

THE DIPLOMA AS A TAILOR MADE

TRAINING PROGRAMME

2002
Dear Colleague

Diploma in Marine Surveying

In 1998 The National Sea Training Centre, The International Institute of Marine Surveyors and Informa
came together to offer the first specialist Diploma in Marine Surveying delivered by distance learning.
The response to the first year exceeded all expectations. To date, over 600 participants have taken or are
currently taking the Diploma from all corners of the world. The next course begins on 28th October 2002.
The course is designed primarily to recognise the valuable and important work that marine surveyors
around the world carry out. In spite of the highly varied and responsible judgements, reports and
recommendations that marine surveyors have to make in their daily routine, there has been no
internationally recognised qualification that identifies this profession.
Another key factor in developing this important Diploma is to go some way to altering the current
demographic imbalance caused by the lack of recruitment during the depressed seventies and eighties.
This has meant the number of skilled seafarers retiring during the next few years cannot be replaced in
sufficient numbers. The course aims to help recruit future surveyors not just from the dwindling number
of seafaring professionals but from non-seafarers that have the academic ability and the interest in
learning marine surveying skills.

THE ADVANTAGES OF STUDYING

BY DISTANCE LEARNING
Increasingly we all face more pressures in
our business lives. Finding the time to
attend courses of any kind can be very
difficult and well meant plans are often put
aside indefinitely. Distance learning is the
solution to your training needs. You can
enjoy the full benefits of studying, whilst
still in employment using this freedom and
flexibility to your advantage.

The maritime world is truly international and in order to give marine surveyors and seafarers every
opportunity to study, delivery is by distance learning which eliminates geographical boundaries
and barriers. In addition to hard copies, all modules will be available from the course web site
www.informadistancelearning.com. Candidates may take as many of the Specialist Modules as
required at any time, now or in the future.
This course also meets The Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA) requirements for continuing
professional development. It is approved by The Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology
(IMarEST) as suitable continuing professional development for those preparing for a career progression
to surveying in the marine industries.

You can set the pace at which you learn.

You can decide where, when and how long
you want to study each module for. If you
travel, you can take the materials with you
to continue studying and make good use of
travelling time. If you change companies,
all you need do is inform us of your change
of address the advantages of distance
learning are still all yours.

The successful completion of the course will provide an undergraduate Diploma that will gain a credit
rating toward the units required to obtain a Masters Degree. Middlesex University has in place a
work-based learning degree programme for successful candidates of the Diploma in Marine Surveying.
We are confident you will find that this unique Diploma provides you with a level of knowledge and skill
that will benefit you and your employer. We look forward to you joining the course.

Rodger MacDonald
Director of Maritime Studies, National Sea Training Centre
Course Director, Diploma in Marine Surveying

The Diploma in Marine Surveying can be

specially modified to meet the needs of
organisations where a group enrolment is
required. Local seminars can be offered
outside the normal course programme and
in many cases, specialist exam questions
will be written to meet the particular
needs of the organisation. The duration
of the course can also be amended to
accommodate the unique needs of the
organisation enrolling. The Diploma
course can be incorporated into an
organisations training programme to
either replace training schemes or
complement them.

fax Matt Gilbert on +44 (0)20 7553 1820

One of the most beneficial factors of

distance learning study is that you apply
your learning immediately. As the course
progresses you can apply the knowledge,
skills and expertise gained from the
materials to your work straight away.

THE COURSE DIRECTOR

Captain Rodger MacDonald, Director of Maritime Studies, National Sea Training Centre. Captain MacDonald served initially with British India up to acting
Chief Officer. After a year as Flight Planner, he left to return to the maritime industry and from 1967 to 1970 was appointed Surveyor of Ships for the New
Zealand Government at the Port of Lyttleton. Initially to gain command experience, he took a leave of absence from the New Zealand Government to join
Straits Steamship Ltd as Master. He was asked to set up a new Offshore Supply Vessel in Borneo, which was the forerunner of Ocean Inchcape Ltd. After
25 years of senior management positions within Ocean Inchcape Ltd, Captain MacDonald was appointed Director of Faculty at the National Sea Training
Centre, part of North West Kent College, an Associate College of the University of Greenwich. www.nwkent.ac.uk/nstc

ACCREDITING AND SUPPORTING BODIES

National Sea Training Centre
The National Sea Training Centre is
part of North West Kent College
which is an Associate College of the
University of Greenwich. The NSTC
is at the forefront of flexible open learning, through the
National Vocational Qualifications (NVQ) system. The main
part of the College is based in the Technology Centre in
Gravesend, Kent. Most of the lecture rooms there are
equipped with: Bridge Simulator; Navigational Aids;
GMDSS and radio equipment. The electrical and electronic
workshops are also housed on this site. Adjacent to the
River Thames at Denton, is another site, which is
dedicated to Fire-fighting and CPSC courses and is able to
recreate realistic shipboard situations. These courses have
been approved by the MCA for STCW 95.
The Centre believes that properly trained seafarers are
essential for safe ship operations. In todays competitive
world, training managers face the dilemma of how to
optimise their training budget. It is not just the educational
cost to consider, but also the cost of time spent by
valuable employees undergoing training and the added
travel and accommodation costs that go with it.
The Centre recognises these problems. It takes a flexible
approach to training professionals and offers a most costeffective way of delivering quality training packages.

Recognition from Government Organisations, Coast
Guards, the International Maritime Organisation,
licensed marine underwriters, insurance companies,
ship owners and marine lawyers.
Putting into practice the high standards of the Institute
and consequently, to exclude certain surveyors or
those whose conduct or competence could cast
discredit on the Institute.
Conferring professional status on those who contribute
to,and encourage safety, professionalism and unity
amongst those concerned with the shipment of cargo,
marine surveying, marine superintendency and marine
consulting.
Bringing together experts whose specialised
