Industry Insights
Textile chemicals are used in the manufacturing of textiles as they optimize and improve the
manufacturing process. They are useful in providing the final products with specific properties are
functions such as flame retardant fabrics, airbags in automobiles and greenhouse fabrics which reflect
the sun. Textiles go through a variety of processes during manufacturing and chemicals are used from
the pretreatment phase to the finished products. The various types of textile chemicals include dying
chemicals, pretreatment chemicals, printing chemicals, finishing chemicals, antistatic agents and
other specialty chemicals. About fifteen different types of fibers are used to make yarn. These fibers

fall into two categories, natural and synthetic. The most abundant and commonly used plant fiber is
cotton, gathered from the cotton-boil or seed pod when it is mature. The manufacturing process of
yarn is a six step process which includes: preparing the fibers, carding, combing, drafting, twisting
and spinning/winding. As the fibers pass through these processes, they are successively formed into:
lap, silver, roving, and finally yarn.
Growing apparel industry is expected to be a key driver for the growth of the market over the next six
years. The global textile market was valued at over USD 1.1 trillion in 2012 and is expected to grow
at a CAGR of over 3% from 2014 to 2020. Almost 75% of this market is concentrated in EU-27,
USA, China and Japan. In terms of population, these regions are home to only one-third of the global
population; signifying high per capita spends on apparel in these developed markets. The growing
demand for technical textiles is further expected to augment the demand for textile chemicals over
the forecast period. The textile chemicals market was USD 19 billion in 2012 and is expected to
reach USD 25.3 billion by 2020, growing at a CAGR of 3.7% from 2014 to 2020.
Product Insights
Coating and sizing chemicals were the largest consumed textile chemicals accounting for over 30%
of global consumption in 2013. The high volume of consumption is essentially due to the extensive
use of these chemicals in pretreatment. Sizing chemicals are essential to increase the strength and
abrasion resistance of the yarn in order to avoid breakage of the yarn. The growing demand for high
quality textiles has resulted in increased demand for coating chemicals. Colorants and auxiliaries
were the second largest consumed textile chemicals accounting for 26% of the global consumption in
2013. This segment is expected to lose share owing to the use of substitute chemicals such as organic
colors in light of the growing concerns regarding the use of synthetic chemicals. The other key
products segments included in the report are finishing agents, surfactants, desizing agents, bleaching
agents and yarn lubricants.

Application Insights
Home furnishing was the largest application segment for textile chemicals market accounting for
38% of the global consumption in 2013. The growing market for home furnishing is expected to be a
key driver for the high consumption of textile chemicals. The home furnishing market is expected to
cross USD 700 billion over the next six years owing to the increased per capita spending of emerging
economies such as India, Brazil, Russia, China and South Africa. Apparel manufacturing was the
second highest consumer of textile chemicals accounting for 26% of the market in 2013. Apparel
manufacturing has witnessed a significant rise in the past decade with the market crossing the USD 1
trillion mark. It is expected that per capita spending on apparel (PCA) would increase in emerging
economies and witness a significant slowdown in developed economies of North America and
Europe. The growing apparel market is expected to have a direct relation to the consumption of
textile chemical and boost the textile chemicals market over the forecast period.
Textile chemicals market volume share, by products, 2013

Regional Insights
Asia Pacific was the largest regional market for textile chemical accounting for over 55% of global
consumption in 2013. The presence of application industries such as apparel and home furnishing is
expected to have a positive impact of the demand for textile chemicals over the next five years. In
addition, the use growing industrialization of India and China is further expected to boost the demand
for textile chemicals over the forecast period. RoW was the second largest consumer of textile
chemicals in 2013 accounting for 16% of the market in 2013. The growing apparel and industrial

applications in Brazil are expected to drive the demand for textile chemicals in the region.
Competitive Insights
The global textile chemicals market is moderately concentrated with the top five players accounting
for over 50% of the market in 2013. Key participants in the market include Clariant International,
BASF, Dow Chemicals, Huntsman International and Bayer among others.
