This is a group assignment. You will be allocated to a group of four. The lecturer will
randomly select four (4) members to form a group. This assignment tests the ability of
students to apply and practice the knowledge gained as a result of studying this module. The
students should attempt to conduct this research in as realistic a manner as possible, consistent
with actual industry practices and issues. Evaluation will take into consideration the effort and
initiative shown by the student in putting in their best attempt and the level of commitment
shown.
This assignment involves investigating and researching an area of Computing and Information
Technology (CIT) in the workplace. You are to select a computer system from one of the
following organizations and undertake a study of its system and related activities. The
organizations are: AirAsia, RapidKL, Maybank (Banking System), BP, Microsoft, DELL, Intel
and DHL.

The format and assignment requirements are as follows:

Each group member is required to choose one aspect based on the scenario below. You must
ensure separation of discussion to ensure there are no overlapping materials discussed
between 2 team members. Otherwise marks awarded will be divided between the 2 team
members.
Scenario
Your selected organization has a special department that manages its products and services
including its IT and Office equipment. There are 10 staff manning this department to ensure
its efficiency, this includes global travelling to vendors sites. The organization now plans to
undertake the following:
I.

RFID To replace the bar code readers currently used to scan its equipment with Radio
Frequency Identification Device (RFID). Explain RFID, analyze the impact of this
technology to the organization, its suppliers and customers. Discuss the advantages and
disadvantages of RFID.

II. CTS - Owing to the long hours at the department, one staff has complained of Carpal
Tunnel Syndrome (CTS). To ensure safety and comfort for its staff the organization
wishes to investigate CTS. Explain CTS, its warning signs, risk factors, suggestions on
proper workplace ergonomics and CTS healing methods.
III. Video Conferencing - In an effort to curb the ever-increasing costs of travel, the CEO
has decided to study the feasibility of adopting video conferencing. Explain video
conferencing, the advantages and disadvantages of video conferencing and the costs for
common video conferencing systems.
IV. Virtualization - In addition to reducing travel costs, the CEO wishes to raise its
computing power by increasing the number of services through the use of less hardware.
As virtualization uses less hardware, software and support costs will decrease. Explain

virtualization, how it can create efficiencies, reduce hardware, software and support costs,
and the benefits of virtualization to the organization.
V. Website - Owing to some customer complaints, it plans to enhance its current website.
Explain the purpose of a website, evaluate the organizations website in terms of the
design, ease of use, training programs, special offers, Online Help, information about the
organization and its contact information.
6.6. System Limitations (identify a minimum of two (2) problems/limitations in the selected
system)
6.7. Recommendations/proposals (discussion on how to solve the systems limitations
identified above or enhance the current situation)
7. Conclusion - Must not contain any references. The conclusion is all about the teams idea on
the topic. The conclusion is NOT the same as the abstract.

Assignment Requirements
1. This is a group assignment.
2. The expected length should be a minimum and maximum of 6000 - 7000 words. You need to
include a word count at the end of the report.
3. You are required to investigate the problem for the proposed organization which you have
selected.
4. The document must be well presented and typed. Submission of reports that are
unprofessional in appearance (dirty, disorganized, inconsistent look, varying coloured paper
and size, fading print) will not fare well when marks are allocated.
5. All reports must be prepared with a front cover. A protective transparent plastic sheet can be
placed in front of the report to protect the front cover. The front cover should be presented
with the following details:a)

6. You should include a statement regarding the division of work by your group, signed by all
members. This will be used to adjust the marks for individual members if necessary.
7. All information, figures and diagrams obtained from external sources must be referenced
using the Harvard Referencing system accordingly
8. Must submit a hardcopy and softcopy of the report.
9. Plagiarism is a serious offence and will automatically be awarded zero (0) marks.

Marking Criteria
The assignment will contribute 50% towards the in-course assessment, as mentioned on the
Student Assessment & Information Sheet (SAIS). The document must also contain the
marking grid (work breakdown structure) as per the sample shown below (pages 6, 7),
which should be printed next to the cover page. Any document that does not contain the
marking grid will forfeit the entire 10% marks and will be allocated 0 marks for this
section!
Distinction
Demonstrated comprehensive research with detailed evidence. High level of analysis performed,
exceptional and thorough knowledge and understanding displayed with regard to application.
This includes analysis and evaluation of facts followed by results of evaluation. Documentation
presented in a professional manner, following proper sequencing and flow. Displayed evidence
of critical appraisal. Correctly listing in-text citations and references.
Credit
Adequate research conducted with fair detail of evidence presented. Moderate level of
understanding, analysis and knowledge displayed. Some level of relevance included in terms of
application. Moderate level of analysis and evaluation of facts followed by results comparison.
Good level of documentation presented.

Some level of reflection was evident in the

documentation. Moderate level of listing citation and references.
