PREFACE
A Note for You, the Reader
m glad you picked up this book, because we live in a broken world, and people like you are needed. You are needed

turns water into wine because thats how he sees you and
anyone on the edgesas water longing to become wine.
You might think that Jesus most mind-blowing teachings
should be systematically laid out in a theological textbook.
With plenty of dull footnotes. But Jesus knows well that we
are people of story and grit. We need to see theological ideas
in messy human form so they can spark something real in
our imagination. We need to see other people screw up so we
can laugh or weep and imagine that we might dare to risk
failure too.
Let me offer you the story of our experiment as a family.
We set out to discover what would happen if we took Jesus
words seriously. When Jesus said to invite the poor to dinner, we invited our homeless panhandling friends, the local
crackheads, and the prostituted woman from the street corner. They cheated us, disappointed us, and then became our
best friends.
When he called us to bring good news to the poor and
freedom to the captive, we organized Pirates of Justice flash
mobs in downtown Vancouver. We wore silly hats and stripy
pants, and waved a Jolly Roger flag for justice.
When he challenged us to love our enemies, we made
homemade cookies and lemonade for the local drug dealers,
and none of them showed up! This is the story of our pathetic
attempts and regular failures to live out the most subversive of Jesus teachings. Ultimately we were changed, and a
grassroots movement arose for the poorest of the poor. We
discovered Jesus, who wants to subvert and transform this
world.
Im convinced Jesus wants to take everything you think
you know
about family and faith, service and suffering,

justice and joy, and yes, even about Jesus himselfand turn
it all upside down. The only question is, Are you willing
to give him a chance? Are you willing to examine him in
a new light? Ive learned that where you stand determines
what you see, so Im going to invite you to stand with me for
a whilein the slums and ghettos of the world, among the
poorest of the poor. And see Jesus with fresh eyes.
Writer and activist Shane Claiborne once wrote, Most
good things have been said far too many times and just need
to be lived.1 So as you savor this story2 and grapple with its
implications, allow my journey to inspire your own journey.
Allow Jesus to subvert what you think you already know.
And youll find that this book becomes an invitation to say
yes to this subversive Jesus and do something courageous
with your life.

Confronted by Injustice
The first time I walked into the Tuol Sleng Museum of
Genocide in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, I was twenty-two years
old and newly arrived in the country.
Outside the gate, I met a beggar with a bandaged stump
for a leg and a rickety wooden crutch to provide balance.
Most of his teeth were missing, and his grin reminded me of
a friendly jack-o-lantern.

him from going ahead with his plans because they were
afraid that he had gone insane. Soon after that, the religious
leaders accused him of being possessed. So much for respectable Jesus.
And so we moved to Phnom Penh and, for thirty dollars
a month, rented a tiny shack that was built on top of another
slum house and surrounded by neighbors in huts. Our claim
to fame was the unused electricity pylon that rose up like the
Eiffel Tower through the middle of our bathroom.
Our first home in a slum.

the poor. But in the church, we called these people saints, and
we put them on a pedestal.
Dorothy Day, who founded the Catholic Worker Move
ment and pioneered houses of hospitality for the unemployed
and homeless all over America, refused to be called a saint.
She didnt want to let Christians off the hook that easily,
because she could not accept that some of us would follow
a respectable Jesus who didnt rock the boat, while a special
few would follow a subversive Jesus who turned everything
upside down.
Yet when Jesus left the most exclusive gated community
in the universe to live with the people he loved and gave his
life for, he turned everything we know and believe about life
on its head. That Jesus and respectable Jesus are bound to
clash.

Many of our Sunday schools continue to encourage followers of Jesus to embrace a respectable Jesus, an agreeable
teacher with pleasant stories to tell about how to be good. But
no one would crucify this Jesus. No one would be threatened
by such bland personal morality. Instead, theyd invite this
Jesus over for a cup of tea and a chat about the weather.

over coffee after the service, let alone challenge our lifestyles
deeply.
Archbishop Oscar Romero of El Salvador once asked, A
church that doesnt provoke any crises, a gospel that doesnt
unsettle, a word of God that doesnt get under anyones skin,
a word of God that doesnt touch the real sin of the society in
which it is being proclaimedwhat gospel is that?10
Jesus words threatened the core values of his society, and
the people erupted in rage.
Then there is the dramatic and powerful clearing of
the temple,11 an action that most of us struggle to reconcile with what we have been taught about nice, respectable
Jesus. Turning over tables? Sending coins and merchandise
flying? Making a whip? Using it! Interrupting the system of
commerce? Not very tolerant or respectable, Jesus! Not very
law-abiding! Bring back nice Jesus, we might think. Im getting scared!
Yet Jesus was not some nice, polite do-gooder. He was not
an American pastor who preached personal responsibility,
good citizenship, respectability, and American values. He was
the opposite. He was a controversial, radical troublemaker
who challenged the status quo and the religious establishment, all the while embodying a wild and untamable love for
the vulnerable and broken.
He came to inaugurate the kingdom of God on earth as
it is in heaven. He came to subvert the world as we know it.

SUBVERSIVE JESUS
An Adventure in Justice, Mercy, and
Faithfulness in a Broken World
By Craig Greenfield
Craig Greenfield lives life a little crazier than most people.
He comes from New Zealand but he has lived in some of
the most broken (and beautiful) places in the world,
including the drug ruled Downtown Eastside inner city of
Vancouver, Canada and the slums of Cambodia.
Convinced that Jesus places love for the poor and the
pursuit of justice as central, Craig Greenfield has sought
to follow in Christs footsteps by living among people at
the edges of society for the last fifteen years.
His quest to follow this Subversive Jesus has taken Craig
and his young family around the world and back again.
This is the story of how Jesus led them to the margins:
initiating the Pirates of Justice flash mobs, sharing their
home with detoxing crack-addicts, welcoming homeless
panhandlers and prostituted women to the dinner table,
and ultimately sparking a movement to reach the worlds
most vulnerable children.
Craigs story is a radical and potentially controversial
critique of the status quo too often found in our own lives
and even in our churches, but it also offers an
inspirational and hopeful vision of another way. While
readers may not relocate to a slum or start dining with
drug addicts, they will certainly come to view their lives
and ministry through a fresh lens, reconsidering how they
are uniquely called by Jesus to subversively love the poor
and break down systems of injustice in their own sphere
of influence.
