4.1

Base engine calibration conversion

An engine calibration provided to Bosch Motorsport in a useable format can be converted to a Bosch
format as a starting point for new projects. The cost of this service is $350 per calibration. Contact a
Bosch Motorsport representative for more information with regards to useable file formats for conversion.

4.2

Bosch Motorsport crank and cam triggering requirements

4.2.1 Sensor constraints:

Crankshaft speed sensors: Inductive speed sensor (recommended: 0 261 210 136).
Camshaft position sensor: Hall effect speed sensor (recommended: 0 232 103 037).

Continental Tire MS4.3 Integration

Page 4

10 July 2013

Motorsport
4.2.2 Crankshaft trigger wheel:
It is required to use a standard Bosch 60 minus 2 tooth trigger wheel for crankshaft position sensing for all
piston engine applications, see Appendix for trigger wheel drawing. Rotary applications use a 36 minus 2
trigger wheel. This drawing will be provided separately.
4.2.3 Camshaft trigger wheel and sensor installation:
There are two different configurations for crank & cam synchronisation one for fixed cam applications and
another for continuously variable camshaft phasing applications. Fixed cams require a single tooth wheel
whereas variable cams require a Bosch 4-tooth quick start wheel, see Appendix for trigger wheel drawing
and installation instructions for both applications.
It is imperative that cam sensors can not exhibit latching behavior sometimes seen in production
sensors. This occurs when the cam sensor sees a high tooth and the sensor output value continues to
read high even when a low tooth passes the sensor. Sensors used with new kits must be measured
beforehand to ensure that a low tooth always corresponds with a low reading on the sensor and vice
versa.

4.3

Engine harness information

4.3.1 Main engine harness grounds:

Engine harnesses provided by Bosch for the Spec ECU system may have ground terminals in the engine
compartment. It is required that these terminals be securely grounded to the engine block, and have a
good ground path to the battery negative terminal. The ring terminal connections must make complete
contact with bare metal and the mating contact surface may not be anodized, painted, or covered in any
way unless authorized by Bosch Motorsport. It is acceptable to provide extra grounding wire, or ground
straps, to supplement the ground terminals supplied in the engine harness so that the connection
between engine ground wires, chassis, and battery negative is sufficient.
4.3.2 Lambda sensors:
All engines using MS4.3 engine management will be required to run Bosch LSU 4.9 lambda
sensors (part # 0 258 017 025). The new LSU 4.9 sensor is designed for high vibration and high
temperature applications. LSU4.9 sensors are available from Bosch Motorsport suppliers listed in
section 1.3.
Bosch LSU 4.2 sensors (part # 0 258 006 065 or 066) are non-compatible with the MS4.3 system.
4.3.3 External ignition driver stages
Various applications require the use of external ignition driver stages due to using non-transistorized
coils. The stock Porsche 997 and most BMW ignition coils require two 3-channel Bosch external coil
drivers (part # 0 227 100 203) for proper functionality. The Grand Am spec engine harness is specifically
designed for these driver stages. Driver stages are available from Bosch Motorsport distributors listed in
section 1.
4.3.4 General Sensor/Connector Information
If non-Bosch sensors or actuators are used, it is the team or engine builders responsibility to provide
connectors for the harness builds if they are not readily available. All non-Bosch sensor and actuator
characteristics must also provided by the customer.

testing needs. If you intend to purchase a chassis harness for this purpose, please contact a Bosch
Motorsport engineer for help with this option. This solution could provide a low cost option for a dyno
harness.

5 Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) Specification

The Bosch Motorsport ETC-System was developed exclusively for use in competition vehicles during
motorsport events. Its operation is solely permitted, if all given system requirements are met. The system
is in a prototype status and must not be used if one of the requirements is not complied with, otherwise
proper functionality of the engine controller and ETC-System can not be ensured. The complete
production functionality can not be implemented in to a racing system due to their limited memory space
which could lead to some remaining risks when using electronic throttle functions in motorsports. Prior to
receiving a Bosch MS4.3 ECU with ETC capability each team owner is required to sign a document
containing section 5 of the 2011 Grand Am Continental Tire Challenge Series MS4.3 ECU Integration
document stating that it has been received and acknowledged.

5.1

Hardware requirements

All of the following requirements must be met. Violation of one or more requirements leads to expiration of
the operating permit. Rebuilds, damages or any alterations without approval of Bosch Motorsport of the
parts mentioned in 5.1.1 to 5.1.5 will also lead to expiration of the operating permit.

Continental Tire MS4.3 Integration

Page 8

10 July 2013

Motorsport
5.1.1 Electronic Control Unit (ECU)
The ETC-System must be controlled by a Bosch Motronic MS4.3. The engine control and the ETC-control
must be accomplished using the same ECU.
5.1.2 Electronic throttle body
The throttle body must be a Bosch DV-E5 type or a part that has formally been authorized and tested by
Bosch Motorsport. Rebuilds of the throttle body must only be done at Robert Bosch GmbH or Bosch
Motorsport. The potentiometers used for throttle position measurement must have a specific relation to
each other, the two must be redundant.
5.1.3 Accelerator pedal position measurement
The accelerator pedal position measurement must be done with a redundant linear or rotary
potentiometer sensor. The sensor must have two fully independent measuring circuits, meaning the
sensor 5V power supplies, grounds, and signal outputs must be carried out twice. One broken measuring
circuit in the sensor must not influence the second circuit. The sensor must meet motorsport durability
and quality requirements. The sensor must be released for use for acceleration pedal measurement in an
ETC-System by Bosch Motorsport. The use of two single circuit sensors is not permitted. The
potentiometers must have a specific relation to each other. One potentiometer must have exactly half the
output of the second.
5.1.4 Emergency kill switch
The system must have an emergency kill switch. The actuation of the switch must either cut the throttle
actuator from its power supply or disconnect the main power supply of the engine management system.
The emergency kill switch must be clearly identifiable and accessible in the car and must be marked
accordingly.
5.1.5 Wiring harnesses
The wiring harnesses between main power supply, emergency stop switch, acceleration pedal sensor,
ECU, and throttle actuator must be manufactured or approved by Bosch Motorsport.

5.2

Software requirements

The ECU (as given in 5.1.1) must be operated by original Bosch Motorsport software, which must be
approved and developed for ETC control in the respective ECU. The use of software which is not
developed for ETC control, alteration of any Bosch Motorsport software, or use of software which was not
designed for the respective ECU leads to expiration of the operating permit.
5.2.1 Program part
The programmed ECU software part may only be modified by Bosch Motorsport. The customer is
required to use only the most current software release.
5.2.2 Data part
The calibration data part can be changed by the customer only with calibration tools that are approved by
Bosch Motorsport. Nevertheless improper data application can lead to critical situations. Therefore,
changes in the data part must be done by individuals, who are familiar with the function of the engine
managements software and hardware, especially the ETC components and functions. The functionality
of the system is described in the documentation delivered with the system.

Continental Tire MS4.3 Integration

Page 9

10 July 2013

Motorsport
5.3

Operating conditions

The safety functions, error detection and error reactions of the Bosch Motorsport ETC-System may vary
(due to motorsport-purpose and hardware conditions) from systems used in production cars. Therefore
the system must be checked for faults before each start up. The functionality of the diagnostics and safety
systems is given in the system documentation and each driver must get an introduction to the use of the
emergency kill switch operation.
5.3.1 Operating the vehicle
Vehicles with Bosch Motorsport ETC system may only be driven by professional race drivers within
motorsport events, or by persons who are familiar with the system for test purpose on closed roads. In
both cases the driver must be informed about function and possible error reactions of the system and also
he must know possible emergency actions (e.g. tripping the emergency kill switch).
5.3.2 Third parties
Vehicles with Bosch Motorsport ETC-System must not be passed to third parties without giving notice of
these system requirements. The recipient must acknowledge the notice by signature.
5.3.3 Damage to the system
In the event that damage or malfunction to the hardware components mentioned in sections 5.1.1 to 5.1.5
occurs, the car must be stopped or taken out of operation respectively.
5.3.4 Modifications of system components
Any modification to the components listed in sections 5.1.1 to 5.1.5 which is not approved by Bosch
Motorsport will lead to expiration of the operating permit. A car with modified or incomplete hardware
components must also be stopped or taken out of operation respectively.
