Angels, Demons and Satan

April 16, 2010

mal'ak (Hebrew), angelos (Greek) : basic meaning is

messenger, both human and angels.
Old Testament:
"holy ones" and "watchers"
Collectively: "the council" or "the assembly"
"hosts" or "Lord of hosts"
New Testament:
"heavenly host", "spirits"
"archangel" appears in Jude and 1 Tessalonians

1. Zechairach (John the Baptist's Father)
The angel answered, "I am Gabriel. I stand in the

presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you

and to tell you this good news.
2.  Philip
Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, "Go south to

the road—the desert road—that goes down from

Jerusalem to Gaza." (Acts)
3.  Cornelius
Now send men to Joppa to bring back a man named

Simon who is called Peter. (Acts)

Their Origin, Nature and Status

They are created:

   Praise him, all his angels,

praise him, all his heavenly hosts.

Let them praise the name of the LORD,

for he commanded and they were created. (Ps 148)

They don't act independently:
Praise be to the LORD God, the God of Israel,

who alone does marvelous deeds.  (Ps 72)

The Angels Protect and Rejoice over
The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear him,

and he delivers them. (Ps 34)

For he will command his angels concerning you

to guard you in all your ways; (Ps 91)

In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence
of the angels of God over one sinner who repents." (Luke 1)
Involved in the End Times

"When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels

with him, he will sit on his throne in heavenly glory. All the

nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the

people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep
from the goats. (Matt 25)
The field is the world, and the good seed stands for the sons
of the kingdom. The weeds are the sons of the evil one, and

the enemy who sows them is the devil. The harvest is the end
of the age, and the harvesters are angels. (Matt 13)
Guardian Angels

"See that you do not look down on one of these little ones.

For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face
of my Father in heaven. (Matt 18)
"Peter is at the door!"
15"You're out of your mind," they told her. When she kept insisting that it was so, they said,
"It must be his angel." (Acts 12)
Many angels in heaven assigned to children.
Jewish tradition that guardian angels resemble their
Demons and Satan

Origin of Demons

For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but sent

them to hell, putting them into gloomy dungeons to be held

[a] [b]

for judgment (2 Peter 2)

And the angels who did not keep their positions of authority

but abandoned their own home—these he has kept in

darkness, bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the
great Day. (Jude)
1. Two classes of demons - free and bound?
2. All demons are bound, but still somewhat free?

2. Beelzebub (Matt 12:24)

Opposed to Jesus

Temptation of Jesus
The Parable of the Weeds
Jesus told them another parable: "The kingdom of heaven is

like a man who sowed good seed in his field. But while

everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds

among the wheat, and went away. When the wheat sprouted

and formed heads, then the weeds also appeared.

Then Satan entered Judas, called Iscariot, one of the Twelve.
(Luke 22)
Satan at Work

Then Peter said, "Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled

your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept
for yourself some of the money you received for the land?
(Acts 5)
Do not deprive each other except by mutual consent and for

a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer. Then

come together again so that Satan will not tempt you because
of your lack of self-control. (1 Cor 7)
Satan at Work Cont.
If you forgive anyone, I also forgive him. And what I have
forgiven—if there was anything to forgive—I have forgiven in
the sight of Christ for your sake, in order that Satan might

not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes. (2 Cor
Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand

against the devil's schemes. (Eph 6)

Those who oppose him he must gently instruct, in the hope
that God will grant them repentance leading them to a
knowledge of the truth, and that they will come to their

senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken
them captive to do his will. (2 Tim 2)
Satan's work Cont.

And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of
light. It is not surprising, then, if his servants masquerade as

servants of righteousness. (2 Cor 11)

The great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent
called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray.
He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him. (Rev 12)
The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so
that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of
Christ, who is the image of God. (2 Cor 4)
Paul's Thoughts

To keep me from becoming conceited because of these

surpassingly great revelations, there was given me a thorn in

my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me. (2 Cor 12)
For we wanted to come to you—certainly I, Paul, did, again

and again—but Satan stopped us. (1 Thess 2)

Ways to Fight Back!

  Submit yourselves, then,

to God. Resist the devil,

and he will flee from you.
(James 4)
Do not let the sun go down
while you are still angry,
and do not give the devil a
foothold. (Eph 4:26)
What Can Demons Do?

Cause physical illness:

1. Dumbness (Mark 9)
2. Deafness
3. blindess (Matt 12)
4. Convulsions (Mark 1)
5. Paralysis or lameness (Acts 8)
Oppose Spiritual Progress:
For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against
the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this
dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the
heavenly realms. (Eph 6)
Demon Possession

With shrieks, evil spirits came out of many, and many

paralytics and cripples were healed. So there was great joy in

that city. (Acts 8)

Unusual strength (Mark 5)
May act unusually - wearing no clothes or living among the
tombs (Luke 8)
Self-destructive behavoir - cutting themselves, falling into
fire/water (Matt 17, Mark 5)
Demons speak through people - "We are Legion"
Not all Illness are Demon Related

'I will drive out demons and heal people today and
tomorrow'  (Luke 13)
Exorcism - How it's done

"Be quiet!" said Jesus sternly. "Come out of him!" The evil
25 26

spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a
shriek. (Mark 1)
But if I drive out demons by the Spirit of God, then the
kingdom of God has come upon you. (Matt 12)
Not just Jesus but also disciples:
He called his twelve disciples to him and gave them

authority to drive out evil spirits and to heal every disease

and sickness. (Matt 10)

Why didn't it work?

19Then the disciples came to Jesus in private and asked,

"Why couldn't we drive it out?"
20He replied, "Because you have so little faith. (Matt 17)
28After Jesus had gone indoors, his disciples asked him
privately, "Why couldn't we drive it out?"
29He replied, "This kind can come out only by prayer." (Mark
What Can We Learn from all this?

1. Comforting to know that angel are there for us.

2. Angels can be an example for us.
3. Sobering that even angels can fall away.
4. We should be aware of Satanic opposition.
5. Satan is limited and will ultimately fail being cast
into the lake of fire.
