1.History
Websters Third New International Dictionary is a completely new work,
redesigned, restyled and reset. This latest unabridged Merriam- Webster is
the eighth in a series which has its beginning in Noahs Webster American
Dictionary of the English Language, 1828. After Websters death in 1843 the
unsold copies and publishing rights of his dictionary were acquired by
George and Charles Merriam, who in 1847 brought out a revision edited by
Noah Websters son-in-law . The 1847 edition became the first MerriamWebster unabridged dictionary. After about a decade of preparation, G. & C.
Merriam issued the entirely new Webster's Third New International
Dictionary of the English Language, Unabridged (commonly known
as Webster's Third, or W3) in September 1961.

3.Compilers biography
Philip Babcock Gove (19021972) was an American lexicographer who was
editor-in-chief of the Webster's Third New International Dictionary, published
in 1961.
Born in Concord, New Hampshire, he received his A.B. from Dartmouth
College, his A.M. from Harvard University, his Ph.D. from Columbia
University, and his D.Litt from Dartmouth. He started working for the G. and
C. Merriam Company in 1946. Gove was managing editor of Webster's
Third from 1950 to 1952, general editor from 1952 to 1960, and editor-inchief from 1960 until his retirement.

4.Preface
Webster's Third New International Dictionary, Unabridged, is the largest,
most comprehensive American dictionary available, containing over 450,000
entries, 14,000 new words in a special Addenda Section, 3,000 illustrations,
and 140,000 etymologies describing word origins. It contains 2648 pages. It
also has a lot of sections such as:
- Explanatory Notes;
-Spelling;
- Guide to Pronunciations;

- Punctuation;
- Vocabulary it-self(with explanations);
- Full-page illustrations. Etc.
G. & C. Merriam Company have produced this Third New
International at a cost of over $3, 500, 000.
