Results of Congregational
Meeting held on Feb.14, 2016
I am pleased to report that
the congregation voted 81-2 to call
the Rev. Dr. Mandye Yates to be our new
Senior Pastor.
Mike Hogan contacted her Sunday
afternoon to extend the call, and she accepted
the call. She has submitted her resignation to
her current church and will start here on June
1, 2016. I am sure we are feeling blessed to
have her coming. I would like to offer a huge
thank you to the Search committee for all of
their hard work.
Also passed unanimously, we enter into
an arrangement with the Pacific Southwest
Region regarding the Education buildings. The
agreement is that we will give them fifty
percent title to the buildings. In exchange, the
Region will assume full responsibility for all
upkeep and renovation of the buildings. I am
excited this passed, and I look forward to
having a worship center that is supported by
ourselves, the Regional office and Casa de
Oracin

Acolyte Training Treasured

Experience for Youth

Pastor Dale led the children

in a fun, educational and spiritual
experience on Sunday afternoon, Feb. 20 during
acolyte training. He started the journey with a
game at the park. A discussion of the rules of
the game led into a Bible study of verses about
light. We learned about the tradition and
role of an acolyte as a follower and
assistant to worship. Pastor Dale led us on
an adventure through the dark hall behind the
baptistry into the dark choir room around a
communion table. He lit two candles and the
light shone brightly overcoming the darkness.
We were blessed by the journey and felt the
presence of God working in us. Thanks Pastor
Dale for this awesome experience.

Senior Book Club

The Senior Book Club will be
discussing The Buffalo Soldier by Chris
Bohjalian at 1 P.M. on Thursday, March 3, 2016,
at Ted and Sammies home.
The Buffalo Soldier tells about the
trials and tribulations of foster care, but it is
primarily about family issues and dynamics.
Bohjalian has created a communal family in
Cornish, Vermont. No matter what the
structure, the family unit deals with pain,
heartache, choices, responsibility, hopes and
love. Bohjalians SOLDIER family does so with
ultimate dignity.

Last Call For The Week Of Compassion Offering

We have made a good start toward reaching our goal of $1,770 for the 2016
Week of Compassion Offering. Through this past Sunday, a
total of $1310 has been received, leaving us with $460 to go meet this years goal.
To finish up this offering, we offer these reminders.
1. Children are to bring in their Week of Compassion coin boxes this Sunday. They were given to them on
January 31st during Childrens Moments. Sunday is the day to bring them forward during Childrens Moments which
will be presented by Judi Smedley.
2. Everyone who has been using the Sharing Calendar that were first distributed on January 31st is reminded to
bring in their gift on Sunday. Use the special Week of Compassion envelope that was in the worship bulletin this past
Sunday, or simply write Week of Compassion on the memo line of your check, to make your gift.
3. If you didnt use the Sharing Calendar, your gift, in any amount, will be most welcome, too!
In a world where communities are being displaced by the catastrophes of war, famine and natural disasters, the
Church is called to reclaim the spiritual discipline of solidarity. Christians are summoned to adopt and live out a
theology of accompaniment, according to R. Goizueta.
Ruths promise to Naomi, which provides the theme for the 2016 Week of Compassion Offering, Where you go I
will go, defines what solidarity authentically entails; and it stands as a challenge for Christians to intentionally walk
with refugees as they seek to build a new home in a strange land.
Is this not the Gospel? Did not Christ, the WORD of God made flesh, as Dales sermons on the Gospel of John
have been reminding us over the past three weeks, . . . migrate and move into the neighborhood (John 1:14 from The
Message) and accompany us in our alienation and displacement? Did we not receive the Holy Spirit in our hearts to be our
advocate (John 16:7) who intercedes for us with sighs too deep for words? (Romans 8:26) Will we make Ruths
promise to Naomi our own? Where you go, I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and
your God my God. (Ruth 1:16)
Thank you for your support of the 2016 Week of Compassion Offering!

FINAL OFFERING OF STATISTICS AND FACTS

Refugees and Displaced
. . . The number of people around the world forced by conflicts to flee their homes, the United Nations High
Commissioner for Refugees reported, has soared past 51 million, the HIGHEST TOTAL since World War II. Thats more
than six times the population of New York City who have been emptied into squalid camps. Source: New York Times,
June 20, 2014.

. . . 25 out of every 1,000 children in Vietnam will die before their 5th birthday. Source: World Bank.
. . . Only 17.2 of Kenyas government budget is spent on education. Source: UNESCO

including 15.9 childrenlive in these households. Source: U.S. Department of Agriculture.

out when they reach puberty. Source: water.org

Disasters
. . . Storms, floods, famine, cyclones, drought, typhoons, earthquakes, mudslides, avalanches. Each year for the

We hope that all of the statistics and facts shared in The Caller over the past four weeks have helped to
increase our awareness of the great need that exists in the world. We are grateful to know that our Week of Compassion
Offering is used to address issues created by Refugees and Displaced persons; Poverty; Hunger; Water; Gender and
Development; as well as Disasters.

Nepal Earthquake Reconstruction

Kabita Shrestha is dressed in a colorful blouse with a purple shawl tucked around her pink sari. She looks as
if she doesn't have a care. However, the 26-year-old has seen her share of difficulty. Having lost her mother at a young
age, Kabita did not have a chance to study or marry. Instead, she took care of her younger brother and sick father. In
April of last year, Kabita injured her leg and lost all personal belongings when her home collapsed during the 7.8
magnitude Nepal earthquake. Then Kabita's brother, who worked as a driver, lost his job. His wife was pregnant. Kabita's
father's medical condition worsened. More and more she was struggling to meet the needs of her family.
Week of Compassion, in collaboration with our partner, ACT Alliance, to this day continues to accompany
Kabita, her neighbors, and many other families in our efforts to restore their lives. The reconstruction of homes in Nepal
has been delayed by a political crisis that followed the adoption of a new constitution last September. While Nepal's
political crisis drags on, Kabita and other Sanogoan people have little time to talk politics: they are busy making bricks
with supplies purchased from funds provided by Week of Compassion. The tight-knit community plans to rebuild 90
destroyed farm houses. The first bricks go to the most vulnerable families, whose homes will act as models for the rest.
Kabita is hardly the only woman leading reconstruction. Emergency response officer Madhu Sunam enjoys her
challenging job and has seen a major change among the women of Sanogoan. "When I first came, women hardly spoke in
meetings. They were used to doing household work and farming. The earthquake pushed them out of their comfort zone.
The women are now quite vocal, and in many ways lead the efforts in reconstruction."
Despite her countless struggles, Kabita now feels a sense of hope. Together with her friends, she sums up the parts that
make up her dream house: "An inside toilet, a comfy kitchen with piped water and a rooftop for sun bathing and drying
vegetables." Thanks to your support to Week of Compassion, we will continue to be with Kabita and others in Nepal for
the long term and help them move into their new homes soon.
This story was from reports received from our partner, ACT Alliance, which provides periodic reports, progress, and updates
throughout the year on our rebuilding efforts in Nepal from the earthquake in 2015.

Compassion is not a relationship between the healer and the wounded. Its a relationship
between equals. Only when we know our own darkness well can we be present with the darkness
of others. Compassion becomes real when we recognize our shared humanity. Pema Chodron
