put the halls on its hit list but the local group who
want to save the buildings are asking for the public’s
support to get behind their plans.

Roadworks raise business fears
A SIX-week road closure has caused anguish for businesses at Brimstage Hall.
Brimstage Road is shut for repairs to the road surface which was in an appalling state. Many
shops in Brimstage Hall fear that the closure will have a massive impact on their business,
particularly as it will not reopen until after Easter.
Diversions are in place and signs are up stating that businesses are open as usual but the
shops are hoping that visitors will still make the effort to come down.
A 21-year-old Pensby man has been convicted of assault in Heswall town centre. He was
sentenced to 150 hours community service and fined £250.
A 45-year-old Wallasey woman was jailed for nine weeks after being convicted of shoplifting in
Heswall town centre.

Hotel’s golfing honour

THORNTON Hall Hotel has been picked by golf’s hierarchy as its base when the Open
Championship returns to Hoylake in 2014.
Royal and Ancient officials will use the hotel for the week, which is a prestigious honour for the
Thornton Hough venue.
General manager Geoff Dale said: “We are already looking forward to welcoming new and
returning visitors who will be following the championship.”

Pavement parking blitz

POLICE have launched a pavement parking blitz in parts of Heswall. A pilot scheme to target
pavement parking has begun in Pensby Road, Gills Lane and Whiltfield Lane. Officers will patrol
the roads and will initially warn motorists, but will issue fines if the problem persists.

School’s police visit

A TOTAL of 41 children from St Peter’s Primary school visited Heswall Police Station where they
met members of their Neighbourhood Policing Team and chatted about their work.

New captains at Heswall Golf Club

THE new captain at Heswall Golf club is retired surveyor John Sharman, who has been a
member since 1978.
John says he wants to attract more younger members to the club during his year in office.
Mary Holgate is the 100th ladies’ captain at Heswall. A member since 1988, Mary has been
assistant secretary and secretary of the ladies sections. Her nominated charity is Meningitis UK.

Community involvement so vital
if halls are to survive
THE community have been urged to show
their support for Heswall Hall and Alexander
Hall which have been threatened with
closure.
Wirral Council has put the two venues on a hit
list of community halls and libraries which are
earmarked for the chop.
But a new group has been set up which
could lead to the halls being transferred from
the management of Wirral Council to a new
charitable community trust.
The Heswall Halls Steering Group is confident
of saving the halls but it knows that the plan will
come to nothing without a big input from the
local community.
Angus Clark, from the steering group,
said: “We have become keenly aware that
government policy over recent years has been
the transfer of such facilities as Heswall and
Alexander Halls to local communities. “We have
also become aware that not all such transfers
are successful . A realistic and commercial
approach to the running of Heswall Halls will be
essential if the Halls are to become financially
self sufficient and for the project to succeed.”
The group has visited community-run halls in
other parts of the country to see how they have
been successful.
Heswall Hall is well used throughout the
year for all manner of events, including
theatrical shows, club meeting points, fairs and
exhibitions. It is something of an iconic building
in the town centre but is running at a loss and
needs major investment to bring it up to date.

retain it.
With public sector cuts anticipated this year,
the squeeze is bound to be felt by local
authorities so the steering group needs to act
fast to secure the future of the halls.
Wirral Council is backing the move to a
community trust. In a recent statement it
said: “Wirral Council is working with the
Heswall Halls Steering Group (HHSG) as its
preferred organisation, to develop a viable
and sustainable business plan. Good progress
is being made which if continued and if
subsequently approved by the council should
enable Heswall and Alexander Halls to transfer
successfully to a new organization by around
January 2011.
“This new organization will then manage the
facilities for the future benefit of local people
and groups. However, to achieve this, the
support of existing users of the building and
new future users will be needed.”
Mr Clark is very optimistic about the future of
the halls. He hopes that they can encourage
more usage of the halls to host weddings and
other functions for example.
Costs will have to be cut significantly and a
manager will be responsible for bringing in new
business.
If these goals can be met then the future looks
a whole lot rosier for Heswall’s community halls.

eyes on the prize
LINGHAM’S book store, on Telegraph Road, has been shortlisted for a prestigious
award.
The shop is one of the nominees for the Gardners Independent Bookseller of the Year
– North & Scotland region.
The winner will be announced on 12th April and will go forward to the shortlist for the
overall UK Independent Bookseller of the Year.
Eleanor Davies, manager of the Heswall premises, said: “We are delighted! However
we are up against some really outstanding shops in other parts of Northern Britain and
we will be very fortunate if we get any further, but- who knows?- perhaps third time
lucky.

Police tackle drunken behaviour

POLICE have been responding to people’s concerns by tackling a range of issues in
Heswall over the last month.
After being asked to keep a lid on the violence and disorder in the town centre, they
agreed with extra measures with one licensed premises to encourage good behaviour.
They are also working with the licensing department to ensure good management of
the late opening premises which has resulted in a fall in disorderly behaviour.
They have targeted speeding motorists in Fishers Lane, Pensby and are tackling anti
social behaviour in Ridgewood Park, Pensby.

Wirral Wildlife meeting

Wirral Wildlife’s next talk takes place on Friday 9th April at 7.30pm, at Heswall Hall,
room B, when Nic Harding will talk about ‘Basically Bats’.
Nic is the Ranger for Flaybrick Memorial Gardens, Bidston Hill and Tam O’Shanter
Urban Farm. Bats are one of his particular interests, and he will be giving an illustrated
presentation of those in Britain and in some other parts of Europe. Admission £2. All

A NEW group has been launched to help young adults with severe learning difficulties
to enjoy more independence.
Supported Independent Living in the Community (SILC) is a self help group based in
West Wirral with eight young people and their families.
They are seeking to live supported lives in their own flats within one property along
with access to communal living areas for social integration.
SILC will act as a tenants association and a ‘lifelong’ support group for its tenants.
It will also help young adults to acheive their life aims including vocational and a full
social integration into the Wirral community.
The scheme was launched by the Mayor of Wirral Cllr Andrew Hodson and TV
presenter Andy Bonner.

Vigorous vegetables
April is the time to start planting vegetable
seeds, as the soil should be warm enough
for seeds to germinate outdoors. French
beans and runner beans should be planted
towards the end of the month. If you plant
salad crops in short rows every couple of
weeks you will have a continuous supply of
tender salads.
If slugs eat every new vegetable shoot as it
emerges, plant your seeds in pots and grow
them on until the plant is large enough to
survive some slug attention. I would also plant
courgette seeds or even pumpkin seeds in
pots and grow them on before hardening them
off and planting outside. Add plenty of compost
or well-rotted manure to the planting hole
for a good crop. Pumpkins if planted in well
manured soil can grow prolifically, spreading
2-3m in a year! A fun plant for children to grow
for Halloween.
Any shoots of new potatoes planted in March
should have the earth drawn up over them.
This will encourage more potatoes to be
formed from the root system.

Hostas do well grown in pots or in the ground
if relatively slug free and after a few years can
get congested. Before the plant starts to unfurl
the leaves, dig it up or remove from the pot.
Taking a spade, slice the plant into two or more
pieces and replant, adding compost. The plant
will grow more vigorously as a result.
There are other perennials that benefit from
being dug up and split into smaller plants. Day
lilies (Hemerocallis), perennial geraniums,
yellow loosestrife (Lysimachia punctata) or
delphiniums will all make many more plants.
Shrubs to consider for this time of year could
include Pieris. They do well in slightly acidic
soil and out of full sun so woodland edge is
ideal. They will be in flower and sprouting new
red or yellow leaves. Ribes or flowering currant
is one of the first spring shrubs with pink or
red flowers. Spirea Goldflame is a small shrub
with golden orange new leaves and it really
brightens up the garden in spring.

Is there anything that can be done to remove these hairs?
