SOMETIMES our best ideas come out
of adversity - and that’s certainly the
10 case for Ness resident Jon Mayhew
who decided to embark on a literary
career after he was stuck at home as a
result of breaking his ankle. Now he has
just landed a book deal with a major
publisher and you can read more
about his exploits on page 16.
In this month’s issue we’ve also got
pictures from Sport Relief Day at
Neston Primary, a round-up of a
successful season for Neston South
Wirral Hockey Club, Neston Town
Council news, Steve Holliman’s epic
running adventures and the launch of
12 a Dads’ Den at the NCYC.
There’s also the normal news round-
up, gardening, beauty and a what’s
on guide. Please remember to support

In the news
Village pride
Willaston has entered the “Best Kept Village” Civic Pride Competition 2010.
But more volunteers are needed to keep the village in top condition for when the judges
visit. If you can help please call Hilary Booth on 327 8325.

Police have an extra pair of eyes

NESTON police have a new method of keeping an eye on criminals. A mobile CCTV
van has been touring the area on weekend evenings, particularly in Neston town centre
and Willaston where there has been a spate of burglaries lately.

Loyalty rewarded
A NEW loyalty card for Neston has been launched. The aim of the Charisma scheme is
to encourage people to shop locally and receive discounts at participating premises.

Ladies’ Day date

THIS year’s Ladies Day will take place on Thursday 3rd June, Neston Female Friendly
Society has announced. New members of the society are welcome. Call 336 6611.

More places to sit

NESTON Town Council will be placing new public benches at the Parish Church, Little
Neston green and Ness. A fourth bench dedicated to the late Cllr Philip Owen will be
located at St Thomas’s Church in Parkgate.

Art on show
THE artistic talents of the town’s primary school children will be on display at Neston
Library from mid-April. Main organiser Cllr Wayne Sharkey said, “The exhibition will
feature the winners from each of the participating schools. The theme ‘What I like
about the Neston area’ provided opportunities for the children to express themselves in
painting, photography and 3-dimensional projects.”

Join the cadets

NESTON Air Training Cadets (ATC) are holding an open evening on Tuesday 4th May
at their HQ at Tanks Field, Church Lane, Neston, from 7-9.30pm. The cadets take part
in a wide variety of activities, including flying, gliding, a range of sports and adventure
training. Call 336 2551, or email: 2375@merseysidewing.org

Empty shops fear

Neston Town Council is alarmed at the closure of shops in the town and is supporting
the Chamber of Trade in its attempts to revive the High Street and Brook Street. At its
March meeting the Council received a report from Cllrs Frances Mawson and Janet
Griffiths on schemes in operation in other towns.

Grim discovery
A BODY found at the back of Neston Community & Youth Centre last month has been
identified as Mark Price, 51, of Little Sutton. Police don’t suspect any foul play.

Book deal is a ‘dream come true’

Lucky break opens

new chapter for Jon
TEACHER Jon Mayhew has been celebrating his
writing success after being offered a three-book
deal by UK publishers Bloomsbury.
Jon’s book Mortlock is released by the Harry
Potter publishers on 5th April.
Set in Victorian London, Mortlock is a creepy
gothic adventure involving twin brother and sister
Josie and Alfie. Together they face hideous, man-eating, crow-
like monsters called ghuls, a circus of the dead as they search for the
Amarant, the flower of life and try to save the world from the evil Lord
Corvis.
A father of four, Jon has taught in Wirral and West Cheshire schools for
20 years. “I used to write a lot for my pupils, short stories, fragments of
ideas but never finished anything. Then in 2006, I broke my ankle and
found myself stuck in a chair with a laptop in front of me. I never looked
back.”
Jon, who lives in Ness, added: “My inspiration for the book came whilst
watching my son in a performance of Oliver at Nestion High School.
Oliver is ‘sold’ to the undertaker Mr Sowerberry and he says that Oliver
would make a good ‘mute.’ I thought it was a curious phrase and began
to look into Victorian funerals. But the idea of a boy who helped an
undertaker but could wake the dead had already formed in my mind and
so Mortlock was born.
“Mortlock is a dark tale of magic,
betrayal and bravery. Working with
Bloomsbury is a real thrill and
to have such a well-known
publisher behind me is a dream
come true.”
Jon will be signing copies
of Mortlock at Waterstones
Chester on Saturday
afternoon on 10th April.

Dads’ Den opens its doors

THE first Dad’s Den has
been unveiled – a drop-
in centre for Dads, male
carers and children up to the
age of 13 on a Saturday at
the Community and Youth
Centre in Neston.
And the day had an
international flavour with
coaching sessions run
by Peter Moores, the
Lancashire County Cricket
Club and former England
coach.
At the first session 58 dads, granddads and male carers together with their 93 children
aged three months to 12 years arrived for a morning of fun and games.
Dad’s Den, facilitated by Brad Donelan from Action Kids Courses, will run every
Saturday in March and then will be fortnightly from then on.
Peter Moores said: “Dad’s Den gives dads a place to meet up and have some fun with
the children without having to plan it all. A fantastic idea.”
The scheme is a joint venture between Neston Improvement Partnership made up
of Neston High School, Woodfall, St Winifrede’s, Neston, Parkgate, Willaston and
Bishop Wilson Primary Schools and the Neston Sure Start Children’s Centre as well as
children’s activity company Action Kids Courses, Neston Community Resource Centre,
Neston Library for providing story sessions
and Everton Community Football Academy
trainers offering specific coaching sessions.
Neston and Parkgate Councillor Scott
Mealor who is on the Children’s Centre
Advisory Board said: “I hope that the success
of the opening carries on and that dads and
male carers and their children continue to
use this facility.”
Added Claire Edwards, Children’s Centre
Manager: “Dads have been telling us for
some time that they would like something to
do with their children on Saturday mornings.

Scouts’ wishes

Neston Town Council has awarded a
grant of £8507 to Dee Sea Scouts.
Dee Sea Scouts have been established
in Burton Road, Neston for nearly 100
years, and currently run clubs for Beaver
Scouts, Cub Scouts and Sea Scouts.
The Sea Scout organisation is part of
the overall Scouting organisation but
with additional water based activities
and is open to young people aged 6 to
18. The Neston branch currently has a
membership of 100 strong. In addition
to scouting activities the premises on Dudley Bidston, from Dee Sea Scouts, receives the

being available to hire.
The grant award is twofold. It will enable
the car park area to be covered with tarmac. This will allow for more outdoor activities for the
scouts and improved access for those with disabilities. It will also enable the construction of a
chain link fence along the Burton Road side of the car park so that the young people can take
part in outdoor activities in greater safety.
Neston Town Council is proud to provide practical support to a local community group which
will bring benefits for years to come. Dee Scouts have raised £1000 to contribute to the overall
cost of the project.
Grant funding is available to voluntary and community, non profit making groups and
organisations within the Neston Town Council area.

Public meeting: The first Annual Town Meeting for the people of Neston has been
scheduled for Thursday 17th April.
The meeting is at 6.30pm at the Dee Sea Scouts Centre in Burton Road (opposite Neston
Primary School) and all electors within the Town Council area are able to attend.
Cllr Moira Andrews, the Council Chairman, said. “This is not an official council meeting. It’s
an opportunity for the public and local organisations to find out more about what the new
council has been planning for the town. It’s the first we’ve had, and I do hope to see a good
turnout.”
A summary of the Council’s unaudited accounts for the year will be presented at the
meeting and will be published on the Council’s website, www.neston.org.uk

people than ever would benefit from having a
Will.
Today’s family structures are more complicat-
ed than our inheritance laws - written in 1925
- could possibly have foreseen. There are more
unmarried couples and single households. Per-
sonal wealth has risen and people now own a
wide range of assets.
A standard Will helps ensure that the basic
essentials are carried out according to your
wishes ; the Right Will can contain special clauses and trusts to help protect your
beneficiaries and your
estate.

HEALTH AND BEAUTY with Angela Bartlett

Q. As I have aged I seem to have quite a lot of nasal hair.

Is there anything that can be done to remove these hairs?
A. The hairs inside the nose serve an important purpose of
filtering out dust, dirt and germs; therefore removing all nasal
hair is not advisable. However, as you say, quite often as you
age the hairs around the edge of the nose can become thicker
and start to look unsightly. The easiest way to cope with these
hairs is with a nasal hair clipper.
The latest trend from New York is to wax unwanted nasal
hairs, as it lasts much longer than clipping the hairs. However,
this technique should not be attempted at home.
Seek the advice of a qualified therapist. I, and other
specially trained therapists, use a special technique
and wax type that effectively removes the hairs
but does not damage the delicate nature of the
skin inside the nose. This is very important, unless
you want to replace a nasal hair problem with a
different type of problem!

Steve ready to tackle the

streets of London
Steve Holliman is putting the finishing touches to his training
for the London Marathon later this month,
Steve, who lives in Millfield, Neston, is aiming to raise
£5,000 for the children’s cancer charity CLIC Sargent by
undertaking some gruelling challenges in 2010.
As well as the London Marathon, Steve has already
completed three half marathons and aims to finish the
Great Manchester Run in May. He also hopes to do a
duathlon and two Olympic distance triathlons (1.5km swim,
40k bike and 10k run) during the year.
The 36-year-old decided two years ago that he would get
himself back into shape after years of overindulgence!
With support from his wife Trish and their two young children, Daniel and Katie Steve
has been pounding the roads.
He said: “I worked hard in the gym and out on the local roads, and over a 12 month
period got myself into decent shape. Along the way I set myself various targets, from
running round the block up to 10k fun run distances.
“Then, through work I became involved with CLIC Sargent. I had never heard anyone
mention social responsibility before, and after reading about the nurses that CLIC
provide to hospitals, including Clatterbridge Centre for Oncology I realised that I could
do my bit. CLIC nurses, specialise in supporting children diagnosed with any form of
cancer / leukaemia and try to visit every one. Looking at my own children made me
aware I would not hesitate to accept their support if my children ever required it.”
Last October saw him take on the 24seven, a series of seven events over 24 hours
over the marathon distance. Then he felt ready for the big 10 events for 2010
