• Projects must be completed by May 1st so that a project final report can be submitted by May 15th.
• Projects should take place over at least three class sessions.
• Projects should not be based solely on the purchase of a pre-packaged kit.

Budget Eligibility
Funds may be requested for the purchase of project materials for student use only. Computer hardware, audio-visual
equipment, and field trip expenses may not be included in the budget.

Please describe the following in as much detail as possible within the space provided:

• Student Learning Objectives

Students will learn the characteristics and traits of a variety of insects and bugs. They will be able to
identify common and differing traits that place insects in different categories. They will examine digital
photos of insects taken around the school grounds and print the pictures to be organized into categories.
They will also participate in a Power Point presentation, providing details about their observations to other
students. They will be able to demonstrate basic knowledge of insect categories, be able to use basic
technologies such as digital cameras and computers, and be able to integrate their observations into
visual displays and oral presentations.

• Methods of Instruction (What do you intend to do in your classroom with your students?)

Students will walk around the school grounds locating insects and bugs. They will take digital photos of
the insects and later print the photos to be organized into categories. They will examine the photos on
computers in the computer lab and list all the visual characteristics of the insects. The students will then
discuss their observations in small groups before presenting their findings to the entire class. Digital
photos will be integrated into a slide show that will be presented in the form of a Power Point presentation
to other science classes within the school.

• Project Timeline (What activities happen and when?)

The project will begin January 10th. The students will take digital photos over the time span of 20 days,
allowing them to collect a wide range of specimens. The students will then view their photos and make
their observations over the next 10 days. The next 10 days will be dedicated to printing the photos and
organizing them into categories to be presented in a visual display in the classroom. The teacher will
prepare the slideshow for the students to use when presenting their findings to other science class in the
school. The entire project will conclude February 27th.

• Method of Evaluation

The method of evaluation will be the observation of participation and completion of the project by each
student. They will also be graded on accuracy of placing insects into proper categories. The grading
method will be on a scale out of 100. Evaluation of their presentation to other science classes will be
pass/fail. Participation will be the only requirement for passing the presentation portion of the project.

BUDGET
List items to be purchased and costs. Combine like items so that there are no more than six categories.

1. Kodak Easyshare Digital Camera model M340 $89.99 x 10

2. SanDisk 2G SD Flash Memory Card $19.99 x 10
3. HP Q7854A Advanced Photo Paper, Glossy (100 sheets, 8.5 x 11-inch)
$29.88 x 3

4.
5.
6.
Total Request (may not exceed $1,000) $1189.44

Please summarize your project idea and explain how the materials listed in the budget above will be used.

Students will be taking digital photos of insects around the school grounds with the Kodak cameras. The
pictures will be saved on the SD cards, and then transferred to the computers in the school’s computer
lab. After careful examination of the insects on the computer, they will print off the pictures using the HP
photo paper to be grouped in an organized collage. This project has duel objectives. First, students will
learn how to classify insects by physical characteristics. Second, they will have hands on experience with
modern photography technologies. It will be a great project to integrate the use of technology with
traditional teaching practices.

Grants Program for K-6 Science & Math Education
Helping Improve Science and Mathematics Education One Classroom at a Time

• Grants of up to $1,000 each will be made to encourage hands-on teaching of science and mathematics.

• Application Deadline: Applications must be received by the Foundation no later than October 1st.

• Project Timeline: Projects must occur between December 1st and May 1st of the current school year.

According to the NETS-T standards, the project described above with fulfill several key objects.
The project is intended to incorporate technology into traditional learning lessons to enhance the
learning experience. The project is intended to facilitate and improve learning through the use of
technology. Not only will students complete the basic learning objectives of the lesson, the
integration of technology will introduce them to new and useful technologies intended to
improve and enhance the learning process.

The NETS-T states that teachers shall use technology to promote, support, and model creative
and innovative thinking and inventiveness. The use of digital cameras will provide a new and
creative way to capture and analyze visual observations made by students for further
investigation in a classroom setting. It will promote creativity in further learning objectives and
give students an insight on alternative ways of investigation.

Another objective of NETS-T is to customize and personalize learning activities to address

students’ diverse learning styles, working strategies, and abilities using digital tools and
resources. The project will satisfy this objective by providing a platform for visual learners and
encourage students with little technological experience to become comfortable with widely
available technologies. It also provides students with an alternative way to learn other than
traditional lecture techniques.

Finally, the NETS-T states that the use of technology shall be used to develop technology-
enriched learning environments that enable all students to pursue their individual curiosities and
become active participants in setting their own educational goals, as-well-as managing their own
learning. The project will satisfy this objective by allowing the student to collect data, use
technology, and facilitate their own curiosities about the subject at hand. They will become the
primary source for collecting and presenting their observations. The student becomes an
investigator, teacher, and learner within the same lesson. The technology will be used to enhance
and spark their interest and curiosity in the subject.
