CHARACTERS RACE
Q&A
Narn, (page 19)
Q. Does the Narn racial hit point bonus only apply in
character creation or is it a per level bonus?
A. It is a once only bonus at character creation.
Drazi, (Page 22)
Q. The Drazi racial statistics are missing from the aliens
section.
A. The Drazi statistics are on page 22 of the main
rulebook.

CHARACTER CLASSES
Errata
Diplomat Class - Improved Diplomacy, (Page 27)

Errata and Q&A

Replace At 4th Level the diplomatic... with At 4th

Level the diplomat...

Worker Class, (Page 41)

On the B5 website, we have published experimental
rules for the Worker class profession, please have a look
and give feedback on our forum, here is the link:
www.mongoosepublishing.com/pdf/worker.pdf

Telepath Class Background, (Page 39)

Q. With regards to an Agents Skill Mastery class feature

on page 27, am I able to add my characters Int modifier
in skills each time I use this ability or only the first
time?
A. You do not add your Int modifier at all. The rule
states that you can select a number of skills equal to Int
modifier which you may then subsequently always Take
10 on, regardless of circumstances.
Q. One of the Agents Class Skills does not exist in the
B5 rulebook. The skill is Pick Pocket.
A. This skill was renamed Sleight of Hand in the skills
section. Please treat all references to the Pick Pocket skill
as referring to the Sleight of Hand skill.

Officer Class, (Page 34)

Q. On page 37, Does the Branch Elite class feature
remain fixed once selected, or can I change it as I see
fit?
A. The Branch Elite class feature actually appears on page
34 for the Officer character class. The fleet officer may
take the permanent +1 bonus to his DV, his sensor score or
his stealth score. Once taken, this is fixed. Think of it as
specialisation.

Soldier Class, (Page 37)

Replace ...though other races have their own, less

server... with ..though other races have their own, less
severe....

Q. Why is Covering Fire (a class feature) a Will save?

A. Covering Fire works by pinning down opponents
due to the psychological effect of bullets whizzing
everywhere. Hence, a Will save.

Q&A

Telepath Class, (Page 39)

Character Advancement, (Page 6)

Q. I have a question about the character creation. I
see you have every part needed except for the actual
experience tables which a GM needs to advance
the characters and what special abilities they gain at
different levels.
A. I am going to refer you to near the front of the book.
Where the rules are not specifically covered in the
Babylon 5 rulebook, you need to reference the 3.0 Core
Rulebooks. In this case you will need Core Rulebook I
which gives all the information needed for this.

Hit Points, (Page 23)

Q. Does the Constitution modifier increase the total
number of hit points?
A. The Constitution modifier is not used to increase Hit
Points.

Agent Class, (Page 26)

Q. I am confused. The higher a telepaths P rating, the

lower the number of skill points that they have. This
is the reverse of the show. The higher the P rating, the
more versatile the telepath seems. I cannot see any way
that a telepath could ever gain all the prerequisites for a
Psi Cop prestige class using this method.
A. P12s get 2+Int skill points per level. Psi-Cops need
12 ranks of Telepathy, so they cannot become a Psi-Cop
before they gain skill points at level 9. They also need
10 ranks of Concentration and 8 of Intimidate (and 3 of
Bluff, which is non-class so call it 6). This means, that
so long as they have an Intelligence of 14 or higher, they
can move in to the Psi-Cop prestige class as soon as they
hit level 10 (if they go for it from the start which most
Psi Corps P12s do).
Q. If the maximum P rating of a human telepath is P12,
does that apply for the other races also?

A. Well do something advanced for telepaths at some

point in the future but, for now, assume P12 is the limit
all round.
Q. In the P-rating section the description it says The
Player must roll 1d2 the result of this roll will be his
permanent P-Rating. Shouldnt this be a 1d12?
A. No, only this part of the P-rating is randomly
determined. The next page details exactly how you
obtain a higher P-rating.

SKILLS AND FEATS

Replace ...complex actions are listed below... with
...complex actions are listed above...

Skill Survival, (Page 47)

Replace ... or scarping a living in an unfriendly... with
or scraping together a living in an unfriendly...

Q&A
Feat, First Contact Protocol, (Page 53)
Q. First Contact Protocol is listed under General Feats,
but on page 53 it is a Human-only feat. (Personally, the
prerequisites and the racial feat bit seem to a be a little
too narrow-tailored to Earth Alliance, considering what
the feat does and ignoring what it is called. I think it
should be general.)
A. First Contact Protocol is indeed a Human only feat.
Basically, it is there because of the social differences of
humans and how they approach aliens (and their status
within the galaxy). It is conceivable that some race in
the League may have a similar point of view that would
lead to the rise of such a feat in their society but that is
something to be examined at a later date.

Q. Didnt the telepath Gestalt feat only require flesh to

flesh contact in the show?
A. The picture below the feat in the rulebook shows
telepaths performing the action we have used as the basis
of the Gestalt feat. This looks pretty conclusive.

Feats, Weapon Proficiency, (Page 58)

Q. The Weapon Proficiency feat states Select one of
the following; Melee, Grenade, Pistol, Rifle, Heavy,
Vehicle, Spacecraft or Exotic weapons. I cannot
find any mention of the Heavy, Vehicle or Spacecraft
categories. The others are all mentioned on the
equipment pages. So what is the official definition of the
other three categories?
A. Heavy Weapons would cover the large, belt-fed
weapons; generally they need to be on a tripod or have
some form of support to fire. In Babylon Squared,
in one of the future glimpses, Garibaldi is defending
the station with a very large PPG machine gun-type
weapon. Vehicle weapons are any weapons actually
mounted on vehicles; these can be similar to heavy
weapons as these are also mounted on vehicles but they
could also be the cannon on a tank. Spacecraft weapons
are all weapons mounted upon spacecraft. It is possible a
vehicle weapon could be mounted upon a spacecraft but
you would still need the Spacecraft Proficiency to fire it
accurately, given the different firing procedures.

Feat Wind Sword, (Page58)

Q. The translation of the ships name was Black Star,
not Dark Star, wasnt it? Dark Star is a place on B5
... in Red Sector near the casino, according to the map
on 105.
A. Yes, the name is incorrect in the feat description.

Errata and Q&A

Having come from a wealthy family or successful

entrepreneurial enterprise, you have few money
worries.
Benefit: You immediately get an extra 1,000 credits
during character creation. In addition, you gain a
regular income of 2,000 credits per month without
having to make any Profession checks.
Special: This feat may only be selected at 1st level.

Feat Gestalt, (Page 53)

Skill Craft (Not listed)

Q. Where in the Babylon 5 Rulebook, or Other B5
books Released in the U.S., is the Craft Skill listed and
what classes is it a Class Skill for?
A. The Craft skill has not been included in B5.
Generally characters should not be spending their time
making items they should be adventuring. It can be
included if you wish but it should really be limited to
the Worker class.

COMBAT
Errata
Leaving Vehicles, (Page 77)
Replace ...damage as they carry on travelli8ng... with
...damage as they carry on travelling...

Q&A
Collisions, (Page 72)
Q. In the Collisions example where does the number
36 come from? Shouldnt the DR multiplier be 4 (1 +
3 size)?
A. The 36 is wrong. It should be 60, following the
base damage of 20 x3. You are correct about the DR
modifier.

Errata and Q&A

Q. I have probably just missed a paragraph somewhere

but what does the term subdual damage mean. Is it the
same as non-lethal damage?
A. It is the same as non-lethal damage.

Sensors, (Page 73)

Q. How is it possible not to see a Minbari Sharlin
Warcruiser? It is a very big ship and has an illuminated
light blue Hull?
A. You can see the ship and, yes, it is quite big. However
the important thing is that space is also really big and
you will have a lot of difficult with your ships sensors
even detecting it is there. By the time you can see the
Sharlin out of a window it is already too late.
Q. Why do the Minbari have such high stealth values
on their ships? The Shadows, who are much more
advanced, have only 20 in stealth, while a Sharlin
Warcruiser has 40. With their high technology, the
Shadows should have a higher value.
A. The Minbari do have VERY good technology and it is
better than nearly every other race. The Shadows never
really relied on stealth for their ships. They transfer from
hyperspace, destroy the enemy and then transfer back
to hyperspace. Due to how dangerous the Shadows are,
you want to spot them quickly, you do not want them
to spot you.
Q. The Shadowship has only +15 in sensors; this
doesnt give them a good chance of spotting a Sharlin
cruiser. If you only roll 10, the ship has a skill of 10,
which then totals to 35. The Sharlin therefore passes
unnoticed...Any idea why so low?
A. So when the Shadowship is not really trying to detect
anything (taking 10 on the roll) they get a total of 35,

this detects anything but Minbari or Vorlon ships. I

would say they have a very good sensors roll as is. You
have not really taken into account any of the speed
modifiers to the roll: it could be that the Sharlin is
automatically detected due to its speed.
Q. If someone is unable to detect the ship by sensors,
how long is the standard visible range?
A. Visible range depends on a lot of factors; distance,
size of ship, ion storm, hyperspace, etc. There are no
set guidelines for this, entirely up to you the Games
Master.
Q. If a ship does not make the Acquire Target roll,
is it allowed to attack? Without using the Targeting
Computer?
A. Yes it is, the Acquire Target roll (if successful) only
gives a bonus to the attack. As long as you know the
target is there, you may shoot, having sensors locked on
just makes it possible to hit.
Q. Suppose there are 3 minor Ships, and one Sharlin
Minbari Warcrusier approaching at speed 10. To detect
them a Sensor roll DC vs. 38 is needed. If the Sharlin
starts at Range 100, the small ships need a Sensors roll
to detect it each and every round they approach. This
means 3 Ships, rolling 3 times each round, over several
rounds. Needless to say, that at some point one of them
will roll a 20 and get an automatic success and the
Sharlin will be detected. I am really not very keen on all
of this dice rolling.
A. First of all, for skills a roll of 20 is not an automatic
success. A 20 is always a success for Attack and Saving
Throws only. It appears you are making all of the rolls.
I would recommend only making sensors rolls for the
small ships when they have a chance of detecting the
Sharlin. Given the deadliness of the Sharlin they may all
be dead by this time.
Q. Going on from the above example, take an even
greater battle with say 10 to 15 Ships on each side. It
would mean 20 to 25 rolls just for the sensors. This is
really too much! Do you have any suggested solutions?
A. First, remember this is an RPG and not a wargame;
as the Games Master you only make dice rolls when you
need to. You could decide to run the battle so that one
side is detected when they reach a certain distance and
then the other side detects them at this range. You can
plan the entire battle out before the players sit down.
You would then only need to take account of the players
actions, which may or may not affect the final battle

outcome depending upon what they actually do. Our

B5 game was not designed as a wargame and therefore
any ship-to-ship conflict should be story driven rather
than dice driven. Only use the starship statistics when
you have no other choice.

Combat Actions, (Page 74)

Q. How does a ship with one pilot get to shoot, as they

seem to use all their actions moving and locking on?
A. You do not need to spend an action to move as the
ship will continue going in the same direction and speed
unless you take an action to change this. This would
mean you could then use a standard action to fire. First
round you move and lock on, next round you move
and fire. If your Games Master prefers you could make
keeping the lock on a target a function on the computer
and, as such, do not add the skill ranks of the PC to the
roll.
Q. Does the BAB of the person firing a weapon apply
when firing a vehicle weapon or just the targeting
computer bonus?
A. It is a normal ranged attack when firing a ships
weapon, and you also add the Sensor bonus, assuming
you succeed at the Sensors roll.
Q. How does orbital bombardment work? Which
weapons of a starship can be used to attack ground
targets from low/high orbit?
A. You aim your weapons from orbit and shoot them
at the planet, if you have good sensors you may even
hit. Currently we only have Mass Drivers for orbital
bombardment weapons, as detailed in the Coming of
Shadows sourcebook. There are lots of other weapons

Linked Weapons, (Page 74)

Q. Can I unlink linked weapons? For example, can
I shoot with every Particle Beam on the Omega at a
different target?
A. While in combat you cannot unlink weapons. It
would take a entire refit of the weapons and targeting
system to get these firing independently. Linked
weapons must fire at the same target.
Q. Do the starship statistic blocks show the damage for
individual weapons or the total damage of the linked
weapons?
A. The statistic block shows the damage for a single
weapon, so if it shows 8D10+20 as a linked weapon,
on a successful attack you would roll two x 8D10+20,
while remembering to deduct Damage Resistance from
each hit.
Q. If it is the total of the linked weapons, why do some
entries for single weapons of a given type have damages
equal to half that of entries with same weapons linked?
A. The starship blocks only show the damage for one of
the linked weapons.

Damage, (Page 74)

Q. Is there a damage multiplier if a vehicle/starship
shoots at a Character? For example, Bester can survive
an attack by a Thunderbolt.
A. Technically, yes he could survive, but would you
allow it? It is not covered in the book as we left it up to
the Games Master to make this call.

Errata and Q&A

Q. In Babylon 5 starship combat, how many actions per

round or attacks does a starship get? They all have many
crew and multiple weapons. For the moment I have
been giving 1 attack per Officer on board. Is there an
official amount?
A. It very much depends upon the ship and crew. For
example, I would allow the Hyperion Heavy Cruiser
to fire any weapons it wants in one turn, as you would
expect a fully staffed vessel to be able to fire all of its
weapons. Once they get damaged then things change.
As a Games Master, I would modify it depending upon
the situation & how many of the crew were dead. For
single fighters or small ships, I would make the crew fire
what they can. Full attack action for the Gunner fire all
weapons at a single target once for example.

that could do it and it is something that will be detailed

in the future.

Q. The Damage Reduction value is applied to each

weapon that hits a starship. This makes it almost
impossible for a fighter to do any damage to a capital
ship. Several times during the show fighters engaged
and destroyed capital ships. Is this correct?
A. This is correct. Only a concerted effort by starfighters
will destroy a capital ship.

Vehicle Special Qualities, (Page 78)

Q. Vorlon Ships have DR and Adaptive Armour. Which
comes first?
A. First you take the DR off the damage and then apply
half of that damage.

EQUIPMENT AND
VEHICLES
Q&A
General Equipment, (Page 86)
Q. What would be the skill level (or DC) of a forgery
detecting device?
A. There is no such thing as a universal forgery-detecting
device. What might work well for detecting credits will
not work for a Narn manuscript. Each individual case
is the prerogative of the individual Games Master. As
a guideline then you will not go far wrong with using
+5, +9 and +13 respectively for poor, average and good
equipment bonuses.

Errata and Q&A

Vehicle Description, (Page 89)

Q. Is it right that the Nova is 160 m long?
A. Probably yes. Starship details and lengths vary so
much that you can find each starship at several different
lengths. We have given a rough guide for sizes that come
close the TV show (which changed ship sizes regularly)
as possible.

Spacecraft Running Costs, (Page 90)

Q. In the rulebook it states that the cost for repairs are a
part of the cost for the ship. But where can I find these
costs? For example, what are the costs for an Aurora,
Thunderbolt or an Omega?
A. At this point in time we have not published ship
repair costs. We have left it entirely up to the Games
Masters discretion.

Star Fury, (Page 96)

Q. The speed for the Star Fury is listed as - seeming to
indicate something like a cargo container that it cannot
move under its own power?
A. As Star Furies are not atmospheric capable they do
not have a base speed, so theoretically they do not have
a top speed while in space.

TELEPATHS
Q&A
Using a Telepathic Ability, (Page 101)
Q. When using a Telepathic power he will suffer one
point of subdual damage whether it is successful or
not. Does this mean that any time a telepath uses
any telepathic ability they suffer one point of subdual
damage?
A. Yes, it does.

Q. Once a telepath has chosen to use an ability,

he must succeed in a Telepathy check at the DC
listed in the abilities description. What I want
to know is, can you apply your ranks in the
Telepathy skill (from page 48) to that die roll?
A. A Telepathy check is made in the same way as any
other skill check, so it is 1D20 + Cha Mod + Skill Ranks
+ Misc. Modifiers.

Q&A
B5 Spacecraft Complement,(Page 114)
Q. The number of ships on Babylon 5 itself
lists Heavy Shuttles twice.
Presumably, there
are 10 heavy and 4 light shuttles, based on the
number seen in episodes like Babylon Squared.
A. Babylon 5 has 10 Light and 4 Heavy shuttles.

Security Chief Michal Garibaldi, (Page 136)

Q. What rank is Garibaldi? Everything I have read or
seen just refers to him as chief . But Chief is not a rank
in EarthForce.
A. Security Chief Garibaldi is not part of EarthForce,
he is part of Earth Alliance Security, so he has no
EarthForce Military rank. A fine distinction but one (I
am told) that has been clarified by JMS himself.

AND THE SKY FULL OF

STARS
SIGNS AND PORTENTS
Errata
Neeoma Connoly, (Page 219)
The attack bonus has been calculated incorrectly, it
should be, Attacks: 0 melee or +1 ranged.

Q&A
Q. In Babylon 5, the hit point progression per level
is very low (from one to three points), so a high level
character wont necessarily have a lot of staying power
(hit points). How can you determine the proper level
of your opponents to offer an adequate challenge to
your players? The normal Challenge Rating calculation
of D&D just seems inappropriate. Are there any
guidelines on that subject?
A. This lack of staying power is on purpose, we have
designed B5 to be a more realistic game where even the
highest level character can be seriously wounded with
one PPG shot. As such, the game was designed to be
played more as a diplomatic/non-combat type game.
There are no official guidelines on what challenge levels
to place against the party as any combat encounter can
have a serious effect on the party (as it should do).
Realistically, and if you look at the episodes there was
combat, you cannot expect the players not to expect
some. It should generally be as the resolution of an
adventure and therefore is a climatic scene. We want
Games Masters to determine exactly what level of
danger they encounter.
Q. There appears to be no method of defining the
experience needed for the different character classes in
Babylon 5, NOR in any of the books I have purchased
an explanation of basic creatures and their experience

CHARACTER SHEET
Q&A
Q. On the B5 character sheet, there is a box titled Sub

CAMPAIGNS ON B5

value or the value of completed tasks. So, how do I

determine the XP needed to level up my characters?
How do I determine the XP awarded since I can find no
hint of this in the books?
A. Due to the nature of Babylon 5, it is very difficult to
assign an experience to opponents as what is gained does
vary widely with the situation. There are guidelines in
the main book that say you should give 1000XP each
session, but it is entirely up to you. The important thing
is how fast do you want the characters to advance in
levels. If you want all PCs to level up at the end of the
session, then you award them that much experience. If
you want your PCs to level up next session then award
half now and half next session. Or, as most of the tasks
in B5 are non-combat related and the emphasis is on
roleplay and completing tasks, you can detail all the
necessary steps in the adventure and assign XP values.
Thus, rescuing the hostage alive could be worth 750XP,
but failing to get them out only awards 300XP. Or, if
they fail to even locate the hostages they get 0XP. We
did not detail this, as we wanted to leave it up to Games
Masters to enable them to customise the amount of
experience to their specific campaigns.

Q. On your character sheet for B5 what does (DES/

ATMOS) mean?
A. It means Description & Atmosphere. Added as a part
to enhance your character,
Q. In the B5 Character Sheet, for initiative there is a
base and then modifiers. I cant seem to find the base
initiative in the book. I know that in D&D the initiative
is the DEX Mod. The same rules dont seem to apply to
this. Ive looked through the book and cant find it. Your
help, please?
A. As stated on page 59, unless otherwise stated, all
the combat rules detailed in Chapter 8 of The Players
Handbook are used in the game of Babylon 5. That
includes initiative, so all the usual rules still apply.
Q. On the character sheet in the list of skills am I correct
in assuming that the 5 symbol is the equivalent of the

square on the D & D sheet? (I.e. anyone can use the

skill even if they do not have any ranks in it)
A. Exactly correct. You may use this skill even if you do
not have any ranks in it.
Q. What exactly is the Class Skill column for and what
does it mean?
A. You should look at your class skills in your class
description from the Classes section and then tick the
appropriate box on your character sheet. These are the
main skills attributed to your class.

GENERAL AND FUTURE

RELEASE QUESTIONS

License

Q. Where may I find the statistics for the Omega-class

cruiser?
A. The Omega Heavy Destroyer is in the Coming of
Shadows Season Book.
Q. What book will the Rangers Prestige class be in?
A. The Rangers will appear in the appropriate season
book (Point of No Return) and the Minbari Federation
sourcebook. There is also a source book on the Rangers
set for release in December 2004.

Q. You know I liked the way telepaths were done, but

here is my question. Will there be a source book for
the Psi Corps or will additional information be found
about them in the Earth Alliance book? Also will there
be a book that delves deeper into telepaths with possible
species-unique abilities or is that something wed see
in each species book. I.e., would we be seeing telepath
powers unique to the Minbari in their planed book?
A. There will indeed be more on telepaths. The Earth
Alliance Fact Book has detailed information on Psi
Corps, plus details of new powers and their experiments.
Each race book after that will also introduce new
telepathy rules which reflect each races approach. There
is also a Psi Corps source book scheduled for release in
October 2004.
Q. The Omega Destroyer is listed in both the
Coming of Shadows and the Earth Alliance
Fact Book. The statistics for both the ship and
its weapon loads are quite different. Please, which
one is to be the official Mongoose version?
A. In almost every case, the Race Books trump previously
published works. The Season texts are useful overviews,
but the Race Books are more detailed.
