as from i n p r e s s i o n s t h a t I g o t f r o r n t h e w a y i n w h i c h t h e c o n v e rsation
took p l a c e , t h e t o n e o f v o i e e , t h e u r g e n c y i n t h e v o i c e s e t c . , I am
conpletely c o n v i n c e d t h a t a t n o t i n e d u r i n g t h e f i r s t 2 8 r n i n u tes and
31 seconds o f t h i s r e c o r d i n g ( u n t i 1 1 t h e F i r e A l a r n r s o u n d s ) i s there
any conversation about t e c h n i c a l i t i e s c o n c e r n i n g t h e a i r c r a f t i t self
or of any p r e v i o u s p r o b l e m s t h a t t h e y n a y h a v e h a d . T h e t a l k is
general small talk and covers topics like girls, food and other
people,

The transcript in this forrn (especially the first 28 ninutes) becarne

possible only after making ny own copy of the original CVR' in a way
in which l-ow frequency noise could be reduced, but low frequency
voice energy could be boosted. This was necessary because extensive
analysis of the tape revealed that the previous copies of the CVR
tape do not contain sufficient. low frequency information for
understanding speech under these adverse conditions. Fron this new
copy of the CVRtape short (overlapping) segments of about 28 seconds
each were digitalised and transferred into a computer. In the
computer three sets of special digital filters were used to process
the sound in order to reduce the rnost troublesorne noise conponents,
without affecting the speech. The speech was t'hen transferred from
the computer back to a rnagnetic audio tape, stilI in the short
(overlapping ) segrments. Special listening equipnent r.ras thereaf ter
used to listen to this tape, from which alnost all of the
intelligible speech as recoroed in +.hetranscript, was extracted,
