Read the following passage and make notes.

In order to prevent dental decay four conditions are necessary. When the teeth are growing
during childhood, enough calcium and phosphorous should be included in the diet. This can
be obtained from eggs, milk, fresh fruit, green vegetables and animal fats. Regular, well
shaped and evenly spaced teeth are less liable to decay. Such teeth grow if children do not
suck their fingers or other objects, as sucking tend to distort teeth. Under the conditions of
modern civilization, diets have been produced which contain too much soft food and do not
give the teeth sufficient work. Chewing hard fibrous foodstuffs stimulates the flow of blood to
the teeth, and also encourages flow of saliva. Sugarcane, hard biscuits, raw carrots and apples
are good foods for the proper use of teeth. Finally, keeping teeth clean helps to prevent dental
decay. With the soft foods of present-day diets, cleaning teeth twice a day is essential.
Sometimes a hard deposit called tartar accumulates at the back of the teeth. Tartar should
always be removed by a dentist.
