INTRODUCTION
OF
TEHSIL MANDI BAHAUDDIN.

ORIGIN.
In 1506 A.D. a Gondal Jat Chief Bahauddin established a settlement
namely Pindi Bahauddin. In early 2oth Century near this ancient village (Pindi
Bahauddin), a grain market was established by the local businessmen and land
owners at Chak No.51, which is called Mandi Bahauddin.

LOCATION.
Tehsil Mandi Bahauddin is located in the central portion of Chaj
Doab lying between the Jhelum and Chenab rivers. It lies between 30-8 to 32-40
latitudes and 73-36 to 73-37 east longitudes.

BOUNDARIES.
The shape of Tehsil Mandi Bahauddin is like a parallelogram. It is
bounded on:North.

COMMUNICATION.
i) Roads. Tehsil Mandi Bahauddin is linked with Motorway 2, District Gujranwala,
Hafizabad, Gujrat, Jhelum and Sargodha by roads maintained by Highway
Department.
ii) Railways. From Lalamusa the standard gauge line to the west of Punjab serves
the Tehsil Mandi Bahauddin with stations at Chak Sher Muhammad, Chillian wala,
Mandi Bahauddin and Ahla onwards to Malikwal.
iii) Helipad. A facility of Helipad is also available at Mandi Bahauddin
maintained by Pakistan Rangers Academy, Mandi Bahauddin.
iv. Pattan.
Use of small boats to cross the river Jhelum at Mong and Jalalpur Sharif is
still operative.

FLORA.
The principal tree species found in Tehsil Mandi Bahauddin are
Shisham, Kikar, Beri, Popular, Simbal, Eucalyptus, Tut, Burgad, Pipple, Dharaik etc.
FAUNA.
Birds and animals are not sufficiently numerous to rank the Tehsil as
an average one for sport. But those animals/birds which are found although rare
include ducks, Geese, Partridges, Sand grouse and Quails etc. on the river Jhelum.

MINERAL RESOURCES.
Only the sand being an inferior mineral is supplied in large quantity
from river Jhelum for construction purpose.

RIVER/CANALS.
The Jhelum flows along the northern boundary of the Tehsil Mandi
Bahauddin. The lower Jhelum canal, R.Q. Link and Gujrat Branch across the Tehsil
Mandi Bahauddin.
ETHNICITY/TRIBES.
Major tribes/casts. Jat, Gujar, Rajput, Syed, Arain, Mughal, Dewan, Khawajgaan.
Sub Casts.

Gondal, Warriach, Tarrer, Ranjha, Cheema, Bajwa, Chattha,


Khokhar, Sahi, Sindhu, Ghuman, Virk, Goraya, Bhatti, etc.

FOOD.
The food of the people of the Tehsil Mandi Bahauddin is simple.
Wheat is the staple grain though rice is also used. Bread, Butter, Lassi, Butter Milk,
Tea, Popular beverages (Colas) and Water are commonly used.
DRESS.
Shalwar Qameez, Dhotti Kurta and Paint Shirt are common dress of
the inhabitants of the Tehsil.
OCCUPATIONS.
Agriculture. Business. Trade. Industry. Service (Govt/Private).
Labour and earning abroad.

SPORTS.
Kabaddi, Volleyball, Football, Cricket, Hockey Tent pegging,
Badminton, Gymnastics and Jumping are the common sports of the Tehsil.
PLACES OF INTEREST.
i) Chillianwala. The graves of those who fell at Chillianwala during the
encounter of opposing armies of the Sikhs and Lord Gough in 1849 have been
enclosed by a substantial masonry wall and a handsome stone abolish standing in the
center and a cross.
ii) Rasul.
An old mosque here contained and inscription commemorating
its erection. The date was read as 1000 Hijra or there about. The inscription was
taken away by the British rulers and placed in Crystal palace by Edward Clive Bailey.
iii) Mong.
This is an old historic place. It was prolific in coins particularly
small copper coins of later Indo-Greek King, Azas and the Great (nameless) Saviour
King of Kings. Mong and Rasul are also identified as towns of Nikoa Built by
Alexander upon the field of his celebrated encounter with Raja Porus after forcing the
passage of Jhelum.
iv) Mangat.
Mangat is also an old place. There is a mosque said to be some 700
years old. A very old Sikh Gurdwara also exist in the town.

Kuthiala Sheikhan, Bhikhi, Mianwal, Wasu, Sohawa.
SHRINES/TOMBS.
The Tombs of great Suffies and Holy men are located at Kadher,
Bhikhi, Gurrah Hashim, Chorrund and Mangat.

PERFORMANCE
WATER SUPPLY.
For the better health of people of Mandi Bahauddin, 11 Water
Filtration Plants installed in Urban & Rural Areas and the TMA has improved
the supply of clean water by replacing old pipes and necessary repair of
turbine. Day to day monitoring is being carried out to continue the supply of
clean water.
FIRE FIGHTING.
To cope with the requirement of the Tehsil two new fire
vehicles has been purchased for the cost of Rs.32.00 lacs because the old fire

vehicle already possessed by TMA could not fulfilled the need of whole
Tehsil.

SANITATION.
According to Solid Waste Management Plan, approved by the
DCO, M.B.Din, to keep the city neat & clean, the Urban Area of the city has
been divided into five zones (Union Councils) and further divided into 15
Beats. The sanitation staff has been deputed to each zone (UC) separately
under the supervision of Tehsil Officers and Chief Officers of this TMA. The
Nazims of the Urban Union Councils and Supervisory Staff of TMA are
monitoring the functioning of sanitation staff on daily bases.
A new Arm Roll Truck along with 15 Containers and Two
tractors along with front head loader have been purchased by the TMA for

quick disposal of garbage and solid waste out of the city. Once Sucker
Machine/ Truck has been received from PHED, M.B.Din.
A piece of land measuring 9 Acres has been acquired for the
dumping of Solid Waste. Further 9 Acres have been identified, Acquisition is
under process and a notification under Section 4 of Land Acquisition Act,
1894, has been sent for the publication in the Gazette.
PARKS.
Two parks, one for general public and one for only ladies &
children, are being maintained by the TMA. A new Scheme for the
establishment of Canal Park is under process.
GENERAL BUS STAND.
All the private wagon stands have been closed and all the
transport is being managed through the wagon/bus stand managed by TMA.
Due to this action the income of TMA in this head has been increased to
almost 100%.

STREET LIGHTING.
The street lights have been improved in the city and are being
maintained by TMA regularly. Work on new Scheme for the Installation of
Street Lights from Sat Sira to District Complex via District Jinnah Public
School, is under process.
REPAIR OF ROADS.
Main roads have been repaired and the work on links roads is
in progress.
REMOVAL OF ENCROACHMENT.
Removal of encroachment is the major problem of the city. A
Campaign for the removal of encroachment is started under the supervision of
Tehsil Officer (Regulations).
BEAUTIFICATION OF CITY.

The beautification campaign of the city is also underway on


self help bases. General public is being associated in this regard.
BUSINESS OF TEHSIL COUNCIL.
The monthly meetings are being held regularly according to the
provisions of Punjab Local Government Ordinance, 2001. The House &
Monitoring Committees of the Tehsil Council have been elected and doing
their job accordingly.

Provision of Safe Drinking Water to General Public and


improvement & extension of existing Water Supply Scheme.

To prepare spatial plans for Tehsil in collaboration with Union


Councils for land use and zoning.

Construction of two Over Head Bridges on Railway Crossings, for


smooth flow of traffic.

disposal.
