INDUSTRY PROFILE
HISTORY OF BOLT INDUSTRIES
The first application of machinery for making bolts and screws was made by
Besson in France in 1568, who afterwards contrived a screw-cutting gauge or plate to be
used on lathes. In 1641, almost a century later, this device was further improved by
Hindley of York, England, and for many years was in general use.
The notion of a nut and bolt manufactory in America originated with Mr. Micah
Rugg, a small country blacksmith, in the town of Marion, Southington Township,
Connecticut in 1818. In studying the best methods of making tools to manufacture
implements, he invented and brought out two machines for making carriage bolts.
In the New York Coach-Maker's Magazine, March 1868, page 151 we find the
following description: "His first operation was to cut up bars of square iron into suitable
lengths to form the intended bolts, then heating one end of these pieces, he rounded them
with die and swage which were inserted into the mortise of his anvil. The next operation
was to head these pieces, and disdaining the old method of the heading-tool, he employed
for that purpose an improved drop-die. The surplus metal which formed around the head
of the bolt by the drop he trimmed off with a die in a hand-press. Then with a winch,
which carried the necessary fixtures upon one end of a shaft to which it gave motion, the
bolt being held in this fixture, the threads were cut between dies, which were hinged at
one end and had a weight attached to the other to hold them together with sufficient
power to enable the die to cut the thread."
"It was several years before power was applied to perform this operation, and
when that was done a boy could accomplish more and with greater ease than half-a-dozen
men could previously with the old fixtures. It was about this time that the turned head
was introduced, and, if we are not mistaken, it was to circumvent the patented process of
the drop. The bolt-heads were headed with an appropriate tool, and the edges or sides
were beveled, about fifteen blows of the hammer generally performing the operation, and
then they were inserted in the end of a revolving mandrel, held there by a screw, and a

tool similar to the quadrangular deck-scraper employed to fashion this head like the one
as formed with the drop, water flowing in a succession of drops upon the head during the
process to prevent the friction destroying the turning-tool. These bolts were then packed
in paper envelopes and sent to market."
The foregoing cut illustrates the Rugg & Barnes method of fashioning bolts from
square iron. No. 1 represents the blank with countersunk head formed in a hand tool by
driving the stock down with a hand hammer. No. 2 represents the same blank with head
turned down to proper shape by the operation of a foot-power drop hammer, as indicated
by dotted lines. No. 3 represents the finished product.
Due to the ingenuity of Mr. William J. Clark of Milldale, Connecticut, the
method of forging carriage bolts was completely
revolutionized in the early 1860s.
The records of the Patent Office show that in
October, 1859, he constructed dies and produced
carriage bolts made of round iron, having the angular
neck under the head of the bolt formed by "lateral
swaging" or compression of the dies at the same
operation by which the head was formed on the bolt by the upsetting die or "plunger."
In the fall of 1861 a few "pinched neck bolts" were put on the market, and more
in 1862, and the great savings in the cost of forging them was in part given to the
customers, and the reduction on prices led the trade rapidly from the full square bolts that
could not compete in the cost of manufacturing.
Mr. Clark was granted other patents Nos.43,669, August 2, 1864; and 40,327,
October 20, 1863, one of which permitted the metal forming the angular neck of the bolt
blank to be projected to the corners as large as the full square iron would make, and when
driven into wood was less liable to split the wood by side-pressure.
The Screw, Nut & Bolt Manufacturing industry faces an uncertain future, with

forecast poor growth in many key downstream markets expected to result in declining
industry revenue over the outlook period. The threat of international competition is
expected to grow over the period, and domestic producers will have to improve
efficiency and shift their focus to the development of highly engineered,
technologically advanced faster and fastening systems in order to survive.
The manufacturers of this industry make metal fastening products. These firms
can be divided into two groups based on the type of fastening products they
manufacture. Precision fastening products are custom made for a particular project or
customer. Alternatively, metal bolt, nut, screw, rivet, washer and industrial fastening
products are fabricated to an industry standard and are designed to fulfill the
requirements of the wider market.

PRODUCT PROFILE
SKM TECHNO CRAFTS manufacturing bolts for heavy vehicle like lorry, truck
or camion, bus and car. The SKM TECHNO CRAFT manufacturing various types of
bolts like heavy hex bolts, Hex bolts, hub bolts, wheel bolts, Hexagonal bolts, Hexagonal
Flange Bolt and Hex head bolts for various camions manufacturing company and other
auto mobile companies.

HEX BOLTS

Hex bolts (six sided heads) are the industry standard for fasteners with forged
heads. ASTM A307 grade a bolts, all SAE hex bolts, and several other common
specifications require a standard (finished) hex head. For specifications such as A307
grade B, A325 and A490 that require a heavy hex pattern.

HEAVY HEX BOLTS

Several ASTM specifications require a hex head that is larger than a standard
(finished) hex head. These specifications include: A193, A320 and A307B. Although
A325 and A490 bolts also require a heavy hex head, Heavy hex structural bolts are
designed for steel-to-steel structural connections. Consequently, they are typically very
short. The A325 and A490 specifications are not intended for general applications,
including anchor bolts. In these applications, substitutions of A449 for A325 and A354
grade BD for A490 should be considered.

TIMBER BOLTS

Timber bolts are also referred to as dome head, economy, fender head, safety
head, and mushroom head bolts. They are used in marine and wood applications.
The underside of the large, rounded, low-profile head of a timber bolt has two
nubs or fins which prevent the bolt from turning in the timber. The oversized timber bolt
head eliminates the need for a malleable iron washer, and therefore reduces costs.

STRUCTURAL BOLTS

Heavy hex structural bolts are designed for steel-to-steel structural connections.
Consequently, they are typically very short. The A325 and A490 specifications are not
intended for general applications, including anchor bolts. In these applications,
substitutions of A449 for A325 and A354 grade BD for A490 should be considered.

CARRIAGE BOLTS
Carriage bolts (round head with square neck) are commonly used in wood
connections. The square neck under the round head will seat into the hole in the wood to
prevent the head from turning. Because they are used with wood, carriage bolts are rarely
high strength and virtually always supplied in a standard ASTM A307 specification.

10

MACHINE BOLTS - CROSS ARM BOLTS

Machine bolts with a square head are the standard for the electrical utility
industry. Also referred to as cross arm bolts they are used for fastening pole line hardware
and electrical distribution equipment to wooden cross arms, poles, and other structures.
These bolts meet the requirements of IEEE C135.1-1999 and ANSI B18.2.1.

These bolts meet the requirements of IEEE C135.1-1999 and ANSI B18.2.1.
Since all manufacturing processes are completed in-house including hot-dip
galvanizing quick delivery is standard. There is no need to wait for overseas suppliers.
SKM Bolt works directly with Public Utility Districts (PUD), electrical distributors, and
others involved with the industry to provide the best service possible.

WASHER HEAD BOLTS

Forged washer head bolts perform the same function of standard bolt, except more
efficiently because of the increased bearing surface on the cross arm. Lock nuts are often
used to ensure a secure connection.

11

BUTTON HEAD BOLT

Button head bolts (round head) are commonly used in wood connections. Button
head bolts are similar to carriage bolts, but without the square neck under the head.
Because they are used with wood, button head bolts are rarely high strength and virtually
always supplied in a standard ASTM A307 specification.

COUNTERSUNK BOLTS

Countersunk bolts are used when a smooth surface is required. Common

applications include: bridge decking, walkways, and railing.

STEEL STRUCTURE STEP BOLT

Step bolts are commonly used on communication and electrical towers. These
bolts are generally provided with two A194-2H heavy hex nuts. One nut must be
tightened against the thread run out. The unthreaded shank or step length is typically
either 6" or 10" long depending on the overall length of the bolt.

CONCLUSION
The SKM TECNO CRAFTS bolt manufacturing company one of the best
private company. I could learn the performance of the organization, functions of various
departments in the organization, various facilities provided by the organization and
working condition of the company.
Good relationship is maintained by the organization between the workers
and the officials and there is no any partiality between them.
The company should identify the needs, expectation of the customer and try to
delivery offers and make the customer satisfy. The factors strongly recommended are to
improve the quality, product features, service, and marketing and promotional offers
undertaken.
I thus conclude my institutional training report through which I was able to
gain sufficient knowledge, which I could not have gained otherwise.
