Issue 37

QUARTER 4, 2015

Weve all seen a diamond. Each of them starts out as a chunk of low-value carbon,
about a billion years ago, deep within the earth where pressure and temperature are
extreme. Over time, the extreme pressure and temperature force the lump into a new
crystalline structure. A volcano or two later, the hard crystalline substance erupts to
the surface. And voil, a diamond is born that is within the reach of human mining
capabilities.
Likewise, changes in market dynamics have increased the pressure to be more
efficient for Intergraph Process, Power & Marine customers. As a result, our clients
are innovating their use of technology and driving new technology development to
make their own diamonds. These solutions are tougher, more valuable, and have more
clarity of purpose.
In this issue of Insight, we look at how some of our customers are altering their
strategies in this high pressure environment to work more efficiently. SmartPlant
Cloud is enabling a collaborative environment for engineering design and plant
operational processes to be seamlessly executed, regardless of end-user location (page
18). Kitanihon Shipbuilding who after an extensive evaluation exercise chose
Intergraph Smart 3D for new projects because of its advanced automation features
and seamless collaboration between design and fabrication (page 10). We look at how
SmartPlant Materials, SmartPlant Construction and GT STRUDL are streamlining
the building process for some of the worlds largest projects (page 12). And we
highlight how Intergraphs Technical User Forums (TUF) on LinkedIn facilitate highvalue networking and sharing of best practices for almost 20,000 users of Intergraph
products (page 14) in near real-time around the globe.
We also share the winners in the annual Golden Valve, Platinum Pipe and Drivers
of Success awards and the amazing images our customers create using our marketleading software (pages 24-29).
No one could predict the downturn in oil prices or how it would impact the oil and
gas industry, and likewise nobody can predict when the situation might change again.
However, we can improve our technology and how it is applied, by collaborating with
our customers to forge technology which really contributes to lasting improvements in
industry efficiency.
THAT is how PP&M partners with clients to make industry diamonds!

Leveraging Intergraph PP&M Solutions

to Work Smarter
INTERGRAPH PROCESS, POWER & MARINE PRESIDENT
GERHARD SALLINGER DISCUSSES INDUSTRY CHALLENGES
AND HOW CUSTOMERS CAN MAINTAIN PROFITABILITY

Insight: Discuss the

current landscape and
how customers are using
PP&M products to work
smarter.
Gerhard Sallinger: The
oil price is down about half over the past year. This is creating
challenges for many of our customers because projects that were
profitable in the past arent profitable anymore. For example,
Shell recently abandoned active drilling in the Arctic, primarily
because the production of oil there would not be profitable.
Many oil upstream projects need an oil price of $60 or $70
a barrel to be profitable, so many EPCs and owners suffer and
reduce investments and headcount. Our solutions can help customers to improve their productivity and reduce costs to help
the industry to minimize the negative impact.
We see that our message is well-received. Our market share
is growing by taking market share away from competitors. Take
Intergraph Smart 3D as an example. We have made it the best
3D plant design system available. We have built integration between our software portfolio products to offer further benefits
for our customers.
Our SmartPlant Cloud strategy is another answer to working smarter because it allows engineering companies and owner
operators around the globe to cooperate on large capital projects
and share data and information.
Finally, it is the breadth of our solutions that helps our
customers work smarter. There is no other company in our
industry with such a broad portfolio of integrated solutions.

When PP&M acquired EcoSys in October, it represented

the largest acquisition of the year. In what way does this

6 INSIGHT

Issue 37

QUARTER 4, 2015

acquisition help PP&M in its quest to work smarter?

GS: Fundamentally, acquisitions bring strategic talent, relationships and technology to PP&M. Our largest acquisition of
the year, EcoSys, is the world leader in project controls software
and is growing fast in our core market of PP&M companies
despite the slowdown in project work. The EcoSys solution
helps clients by setting detailed expectations and creating
transparency of the progress and financial status of large capital projects. This visibility into cost performance is critically
important in the current market as our clients seek to improve
their efficiency, particularly for those who are implementing
Advanced Work Packaging (AWP) construction techniques.
EcoSys is not the only one offering this type of solutions, and
many companies use homegrown tools. However, EcoSys is the
most advanced and successful player in the project controls
market, and I am proud to have them as part of the Intergraph
and Hexagon family.

At HxGN LIVE Las Vegas 2015, it was stated that building information modeling (BIM) would become a more
important aspect of the PP&M portfolio. How is that path
unfolding?

GS: One step in this direction was the acquisition of EcoSys.

They have approximately 20 to 25 percent of the market share
in the BIM market. That was also an attractive factor in itself,
but by entering a new market, we can continue to increase our
diversification. Everybody knows that oil and gas is an industry
that is under pressure. Consumption is not growing as it has in
the past, due to alternative means of energy. So we are looking
actively on broadening our footprint, not only in our industry
but also adjacent industries, like the global construction industry, where we already have many strategic relationships with
EPCs who operate in both markets.
We will become a major player in the BIM market for con-

struction solutions. Right now we are developing new technology and evaluating what existing products should be enhanced
to serve the BIM market for construction solutions.

future. It is quite a large company with eight fabrication yards.

They recognized the strength of our software and went with
Smart 3D and other tools over the competition.

What PP&M products are creating the most interest

right now?

Industry analyst ARC Advisory Group has named

Intergraph No. 1 in process, power and marine

The products we run on the Cloud can include third-party
solutions. Our customers can easily have a half dozen or more
companies working on the same project. These online tools
share the information seamlessly.
SmartPlant Construction is a product that gets high attention and adoption rates due to the growing industry trend towards Advanced Work Packaging. SmartPlant Fusion is another one, due to the unique technology to manage unstructured
brownfield information. Intergraph Smart 3D is growing successfully, and we are breaking into the offshore industry, which
is not a traditional domain of Intergraph, but there are customers who recognize the strength of the software and switched to
our system. Recently, a large and prestigious project in Italy
for a company named Fincantieri decided to use Intergraph solutions to build all of its ships, including cruise ships, in the

share by almost 4 percent. For 2015 we will continue to grow
our share.

How does Intergraphs attitude and treatment of its

customers impact the success it is seeing?

GS: We have a culture of caring about our customer which

goes beyond the standard level. We do not let the customer
down, regardless of what it takes. We fix the issues, whatever
they are, to help our customers achieve their goals and targets
on time. Our customers simply know that whatever happens,
they can trust us. And the result is the company continues to
grow and remain No. 1 in our industry.

yundai Engineering & Construction (HDEC) is one

of Koreas leading engineering, procurement and
construction firms, with experience in oil refineries,
petrochemical, gas processing plants, gas-to-liquids
projects, iron and steel mills, and smelter facilities. HDECs vision is
to pioneer advancement in the global plant market through a combination of creativity and innovative technology.
The company has been responsible for a number of key construction sites in Korea and the Middle East over the past decade, including Shells Qatar Pearl gas-to-liquid project and Saudi Aramcos
Karan gas facilities project in Saudi Arabia.
These are complex projects, with the construction phase involving thousands of workers, millions of details, and numerous
complex variables, such as labor, materials, weather and schedules.
To ensure that the company was making the best use of resources,
HDEC investigated new technologies and solutions to help manage
the billions of bits of data required to complete such projects on time
and on budget.
HDEC was already using several other Intergraph solutions to
improve performance in design, but it wanted to investigate ways to
enhance productivity during construction. In November 2014, the
company commenced a pilot implementation of SmartPlant Construction, which offers dynamic work package planning, construction sequencing and reporting to streamline and integrate engineering for improved efficiency on capital projects.
The pilot project was completed in January 2015, with the final
report issued within HDEC during February. The feedback was exceptional, according to a manager from the IT planning team.
Increasingly, our customers want to see their construction status in real-time and manage sites through data-driven systems, with
no inconsistencies. We are confident that SmartPlant Construction
will help us to achieve this, said the manager. We expect the end
result to be improved project execution and improved operational
readiness for handover to the owner.
HDEC is training its engineers in both SmartPlant Construction

GETTING THE BEST ROI

Being Smarter About Steel

FROM THE TOP

This article is reprinted

with permission from
digitalPlant.

PP&M products offer smarter approach to steel structure

project life cycles

ven the smallest steel construction project involves

millions of parts, costs millions of dollars/euros, and
presents significant risks which must be identified,
mitigated and effectively managed.
In todays increasingly challenging economy, the margin
for error is less than ever before. Delayed time to market caused
by project overruns or incorrect data handover can cost millions in lost productivity. Its also costly to suppliers reputations.

Streamlining process, securing contracts

Clients wishing to maximize ROI (return on investment) and

ROCE (return on capital expenditure) are looking to bring further
value from their supply chain. Each project stakeholder must execute activities efficiently, provide value for money, and adhere to
all applicable engineering standards and industry regulations.
Contractors who streamline their work processes will achieve
efficiencies which they can pass on to their client a clear advantage in an increasingly competitive market.

Revolutionizing processes, reducing costs

The traditional EPC/PMC decision to subcontract all steel construction activities (including detail design, manufacturing, shipping, and erection) to a single fabricator is unlikely to change in the
short term. However, innovative engineering software, such as Intergraph Smart 3D and SmartPlant solutions, revolutionize work
processes and secure efficiencies in two key ways:
Digital data-centric approach replaces traditional document-centric paper-based / file-based project execution
Integrated software environment enables all authorized
project stakeholders to access and reuse data across disciplines, departments, companies and IT borders

How it works

Traditional file-based project execution is time and cost intensive. It is also heavily reliant on manual, repetitive and error-prone
activities.
Digital project execution stores data - including graphics for 2D
and 3D modeling design and analysis activities - in a central automated database which enforces pre-defined design processes and
standards enables data reuse across disciplines, provides automated
version control and change management and ensures consistent

output quality.
This concept streamlines work processes and offers significant
benefits which are simply not possible with file-based execution.
Object correlation recognizes different 2D and 3D digital versions
of the same physical object to ensure design consistency, while
global work sharing enables multiple parties to work together in
real time, regardless of their geographical location.
Automation and data reuse eliminates valuable engineering
hours spent on non-value-adding tasks, and automated change
management and version control ensure timely propagation of
design changes to downstream work processes.

decides on the out-of-the-box integration it may take a few weeks

to make the software suite run effectively within the day-to-day
activities of the business. The solutions powerful out-of-the-box
functionality can also be easily configured and further customized to address additional customer-specific requirements, providing additional value and enhanced efficiency.
Per Intergraphs service methodology, Granata recommends
performing a workshop with PP&M experts to figure out which
implementation procedure and integration scenario best fits the
clients requirements. This helps avoid repetitive work and better
manages user expectations.

Comprehensive steel construction solutions

Smart Engineering Enterprise solutions cover the complete

scope of steel construction. They offer a flexible, scalable and
highly configurable environment.
For structural modeling, analysis, and design, GT STRUDL
solutions include all tools necessary. For steel structure design
and production, Intergraph Smart 3D ensures data integrity and
cross-discipline collaboration. Modules include manufacturing
planning for steel structures and relevant assemblies.
In the realm of fabrication planning and management, SmartPlant Construction retrieves 2D drawings or 3D models published within SmartPlant Enterprise environment, and data is
used to execute work package planning of steel fabrication and
erection.
For those working in materials management, SmartPlant
Materials supports definition of materials requirements and procurement work processes to support steel fabrication and erection.

Two ways, numerous benefits

Organizations who adopt a data-centric approach to project

design and execution will secure significant efficiencies. Leaner
working eliminates waste, optimizes team productivity and ensures data integrity. This helps you price smarter, perform faster,
and deliver quicker.
Integrated digital data can be rapidly verified against contractual commitments, compressing time to market. And data-centric
project handover offers a full and accurate digital record of the
physical facility. This information can be leveraged throughout
the asset lifecycle, to ensure operational integrity and optimum
productivity.
At a time when clients look for ever increasing value from the
supply chain, this concept offers a competitive advantage and will
reinforce your reputation as a supplier of choice.
Maurizio M. Granata - business development executive for
materials procurement and construction solutions at Intergraph
PP&M for the Europe, Middle East, India and Africa region - said
this can be achieved as a stand-alone solution or out-of-the-box
integration.
When choosing our stand-alone solution, in just a few days
the user is able to work productively, Granata said. If the client

Holcomb said the steady, viral growth in membership
indicates that TUF LinkedIn groups are something the users
want.
We expect to see more participation of users over time

Q. How do these groups function?

We have seen a significant shift in how people use the TUF
groups over the last four years. At first, most conversations were
initiated by Intergraph product managers to gather user input. Over
time, users became more comfortable with social media usage
and took over most conversations. Now, most conversations are
collaborative discussions between colleagues from around the
world, which our product managers listen to closely in addition to
the discussions the product managers still initiate to gather user
priorities and advice.

ADVANCED WORK PACK AGING

It Just Makes Sense

Advanced Work Packaging with SmartPlant Construction:

When common sense is used on major building projects

RISK IS LOWERED IF YOU PLAN

YOUR WORK IN A BETTER WAY.
WHEN YOU IMPROVE YOUR
PREDICTABILITY, IT GIVES YOU
ADDITIONAL RESPECT IN THE
INDUSTRY. AND IF YOU AS A
CONSTRUCTION COMPANY
DELIVER WHEN YOU SAY YOU
WILL AND PREDICT YOUR
OUTCOME, YOU WILL BECOME
NO. 1.

Michael Buss
Senior VP of Global Business Development
Intergraph PP&M

ouve seen it before. You drive by a construction site

and see three guys standing there. Only two, however,
appear to be working. Why is that? Is the third one
lazy?
Not necessarily so, said Michael Buss, Senior Vice President
of Global Business Development for Intergraph Process, Power &
Marine.
Natural human behavior is to want to be productive,
Buss said. The problem could be that the work wasnt properly
planned, and only two of the three had something to do. Typically there is 30 percent waste on construction projects because of

16 INSIGHT

Issue 37

QUARTER 4, 2015

that. Companies dont want to pay three people when only two are
actually working.
The core issue is that the work had not been detailed planned,
for what needs to happen in the next week or in two weeks.
Through Advanced Work Packaging which is the basis for
SmartPlant Construction we keep that from happening.
Additionally, AWP aligns engineering, procurement and fabrication with the sequencing needs of site installation and turnover
to operation. Thousands of decisions have to be made for large
construction projects be they nuclear power plants, oil refineries,
offshore rigs or giant ships and without a detailed plan of exactly

By PAT R IC IA Mc C A RT E R

what should be done exactly when, waste can elevate costs.

And as companies becomes more familiar with what AWP software such as SmartPlant Construction can do, they are demanding it
is utilized for their projects.
Risk is lowered if you plan your work in a better way, Buss
said. When you improve your predictability, it gives you additional
respect in the industry. And if you as a construction company
deliver when you say you will and predict your outcome, you will
become No. 1.
It just makes sense. Its common sense.
Customers in various industry sectors who have used SmartPlant
Construction for their large projects are implementing it on their
next construction efforts as they have realized savings, Buss said.
In AWP, all parties in the project get around the table to itemize
their concerns and plans: engineering, procurement, construction.
It is planning from the highest levels, he said. It is communication and managing expectations.
Buss said the AWP approach began in Canada about three years
ago, and then migrated into the United States. And now, companies
across the globe are saying, We should do what makes sense.
Dr. Ted Blackmon is the founder and CEO of Construct-X, a
consulting firm that assists owner operators and their EPC partners
achieve break-through performance by using AWP on their capital
projects. Prior to founding Construct-X, Blackmon said he was the
initial inventor in the development of technologies and detailed
procedures to support WorkFace Planning, which is a key aspect of
AWP.
There is statistical proof, Blackmon said, that there are significant
performance benefits in the construction of large, complex developments when the virtual construction model made possible by using
the SmartPlant Construction tool is utilized with a holistic approach in the very DNA of a project.
This requires alignment of engineering and procurement with
the timing and information flow needs of construction and completions, he said. This is where use of SmartPlant Construction, as part
of a larger ecosystem of Intergraph tools, really provides projects with
a strategic advantage.
The Construction Industry Institute announced in September
that it was promoting AWP as a best practice, calling it a team-oriented practice in the project management toolkit that could improve
delivery effectiveness and predictability.
It is a driving force to transform the world of construction from a
rough-and-tumble, paper-based process, into a streamlined execution approach, agile and responsive to change, and adequately supported by technology in the field, Blackmon said.
But AWP is not just about enabling virtual construction. It also
takes a fresh approach whereby process efficiencies that both address
the need for increased time on tools for the construction workers, as
well as allows the construction management to spend more of their
time paving the way for the construction crews, and less time fighting
fires in the field because the crews cannot do their work.

From the Construction

Industry Institute
Benefits reported in case studies from the use
of Advanced Work Packaging:
Improved safety awareness and performance
Reduced cost through improved labor
productivity and reduced rework
Improved overall project predictability
for cost and schedule
Improved up-front planning
Better alignment among stakeholders from
planning through construction
Better than normal craft laborer retention
due to improved morale
More time for foremen to supervise in the field
Improved housekeeping
Improved quality of reporting from effectiveprogress tracking
Improved installation quality
Enhanced turnover
In terms of specific benefits, the payback is clear and
has been documented, both by the extensive research
reports published by the Construction Industry
Institute, as well as by a number of case studies and
publically available presentations that cover projects
which have adopted AWP practices. The storyline
on the benefits is clear and straight forward. Invest
1-2 percent in dedicating upfront planners to build
detailed Installation Work Packages in Smart Plant
Construction, and get a return of 10 percent or more
reduction in your cost of construction. This is largely
enabled by transforming the typical time on tools for
construction workers from 25-35 percent on the project
to number over 50 percent. That is largely because
through AWP the construction crews are not held up
in the field waiting or searching for materials or
drawings. Keep in mind though that the benefits go
beyond just itime savings. Safety and decreased risk
through better visibility and predictability are powerful
benefits, especially from the perspective of an owner.

WORKING SMARTER

SMARTPLANT CLOUD

The Value of Data

Using SmartPlant Cloud to leverage one of your most

valuable assets

here has been increasing attention placed on the value of asset information, where data is
being used in new, innovative
ways to have a major impact on the feasibility of developing assets viably.
This in turn has also raised the awareness that loss of data, inaccessibility to
data and the poor quality of data is leading to a significant loss of value for owner
operators and EPCs alike.
Ben van Beurden, CEO of Royal Dutch
Shell, gave a speech in June at the World
Gas Conference and discussed how Shell
is stepping up its game in lowering costs.
For example, were working to create
an integrated engineering environment,
van Beurden said. This is called Project
Vantage. We expect key savings in design

and engineering to come from the singlesource availability of up-to-date design

information semi-automated data validation and consistency checking across
disciplines, locations and contractors.
Put simply, if you do not have a strategy for managing data, you are increasing
design, procurement, construction, commissioning and operational costs.

The importance of cloud strategy

In order to facilitate this move to structured and accessible data, more and more
companies are choosing a cloud solution
for their asset information. Intergraphs
SmartPlant Cloud is a business enabler.
How? By enabling a collaborative environment for engineering design and plant
operational processes to be seamlessly

executed regardless of end-user location.

SmartPlant Cloud provides a platform in
which users access a common source of
data, with access controls to protect intellectual property, consistent application
of company / project standards, which is
all backed by a team of support personnel
available 24/7. Having centralized, up-todate, organized data that is accessible to
everyone in the company, and specifically
on the project, is of monumental value.
A cloud solution like SmartPlant
Cloud is an integral part of achieving this
efficiency. Within a cloud environment,
work processes are changed for the better EPCs, Owner Operators (OOs), and
all stakeholders have access to data they
can trust to support improved decision
making processes. The power of SmartPlant Cloud is seen both in its simplicity
of access and its comprehensive offerings
all that is needed at the end users device to access the full suite of Intergraph
solutions, third party applications and inhouse tools is web access.
The complete capabilities of all solutions are maintained in SmartPlant
Cloud. This enables OOs to ensure their
corporate standards are adopted, reducing handover costs as they move between
project phases, while EPCs are able to
execute work globally from a very diverse
set of locations. Equipment and service
suppliers also benefit from receiving information earlier, meaning fewer project
changes and more efficient work processes.

refinery designed by two EPC joint venture consortia, each working in five different countries, how do you ensure that all
parties have worked to achieve a complete,
correct, consistent design basis?
Peter Paul Pruijn, FDH Joint Venture
Information Manager at Fluor, recently
presented his companys experience of implementing SmartPlant Cloud to increase
productivity in just such a situation - a
joint venture, multi-billion dollar refinery
mega-project in the Middle East consisting of multiple partners in numerous locations. It was a requirement of the contract
that one SmartPIant Instrumentation and
SmartPlant Electrical (the other Intergraph software being employed) system
be delivered, and after significant consideration Intergraphs SmartPlant Cloud was
chosen.
In the Fluor example, it was a common
scenario that companies executed their
specific aspects of the project in their own
environments, meaning that several different systems were constantly being used.
Fluor, however, recognized the advantage of working collaboratively via SmartPlant Cloud, and was able to have an operational environment within two months,
accessible by all contractors consistently.
This meant that all parties came together
in a productive environment with minimal impact. Once ready, access was immediate and globally accessible.

Fluor reported several advantages to

the overall project soon after implementation. Firstly, the simplicity of access in
SmartPlant Cloud made project information universally available. Having only one
environment for contracts, templates and
configuration meant consistency on deliverables and data entry, with no consolidation required after handover.
After one year of executing the project in SmartPlant Cloud, the Fluor consortium has seen good performance and
decreased set up time, and the environment continues to effectively meet both
OO and EPC needs. Fluor has reported
a clear advantage of operating in SmartPlant Cloud versus attempting to keep all
stakeholders engaged with the same data
and information across multiple sources.

Making data as valuable as oil

Fluor, Shell (Project Vantage), ENI

and JGC are just a few of the global companies implementing SmartPlant Cloud
to gain significant advantages, leveraging
in-house and project data to their fullest
potential. Not only are consistent data sets
being developed, they are also being efficiently put in the hands of the end-user. In
addition, companies are recognizing that
operating within SmartPlant Cloud fills
gaps in internal skills shortages by centralizing IT administration and effectively decreasing costs.

ntergraph Process, Power & Marine announced in

September it had acquired EcoSys Management LLC, a
company that will allow Intergraph PP&M to broaden its
leadership position as a project enterprise solution provider by adding project controls to our existing portfolio.
EcoSys flagship software solution, EcoSys EPC (Enterprise
Planning & Controls), has been widely adopted by the project controls industry, both in PP&M (Process, Power & Marine) and AEC
(Architectural, Engineering & Construction) markets.

22 INSIGHT

Issue 37

QUARTER 4, 2015

A web-based platform introduced in 2006, EcoSys provides

the deepest capabilities to support the complete spectrum of solutions within the project controls discipline from project portfolio
management and capital program management, through budgeting, forecasting and performance reporting. Additionally, the integration of project scheduling (4D) and cost management (5D)
with PP&Ms 3D design and construction solutions will strengthen
Intergraph and Hexagons capabilities in the building information
modeling market (BIM).

By J E R RY F E LT S

EcoSys project controls solution bridges the gap that has traditionally existed between planning and managing project execution. EcoSys sells its software for on-premise use, as a hosted solution, and as a software as a service (SaaS) model.
The acquisition was the third in 2015 by Intergraph PP&M, after OhmTech A/S, a Norwegian pressure vessel design software
company in March, and Blue Iron Systems, Inc. of Calgary, Alberta, in May.
Intergraph PP&M President Gerhard Sallinger said, EcoSys is
the most important and strategic acquisition we have done since
the acquisition of COADE in 2010.
EcoSys EPC is a great solution. It is a very dynamic company
with super growth numbers in the last three years. EcoSys technology will be strategic for our expanded offering to the AEC/BIM
markets to improve project execution.
Inc. magazine recently ranked EcoSys on its annual Inc. 5000
List, a prestigious ranking of U.S.-based, privately held, for profit
and independent companies. EcoSys revenue increased 222 percent during the three-year span evaluated by Inc. magazine.
EcoSys, which has approximately 100 employees in the United
States, will remain a standalone operation under its current management team. That team is comprised of software veterans with
hands-on experience designing and implementing world-class
commercial enterprise software currently used by thousands of
global organizations.
EcoSys is a strong brand with a skilled and experienced management team, and its EcoSys EPC core software solution is a strategic fit, Hexagon President and CEO Ola Rolln said in a news
release. We also see opportunities for international expansion of
EcoSys software throughout Hexagons global footprint.
EcoSys helps customers address the time and cost challenges
of capital project management on a global scale. Headquartered
in Broomfield, Colo., with offices in New York City, Houston,
London and Sydney, EcoSys has implemented enterprise planning
and cost control solutions for more than 250 leading organizations
around the world.
Founded in 2000 by the original developers of Primaveras enterprise project management system (now known as P6), EcoSys
has implemented enterprise solutions for over 250 leading organizations in the public and private sectors for a range of industries
including energy and utilities; oil, gas and chemicals; engineering
and construction; transportation; information technology and
government contracting.
We at EcoSys are very excited to be joining an industry leader
like Intergraph and becoming part of the Hexagon family, said
Javier Sloninsky, co-founder and CEO of EcoSys. With such a
powerful combination of technologies, we can help our customers
improve project performance and productivity like never before.
EcoSys EPC, our project controls software platform, is an
ideal fit, and this acquisition will create significantly more growth
opportunities by allowing our company to leverage Intergraphs

technology portfolio, channel infrastructure and global customer contacts.

More to Come
Intergraph PP&M President Gerhard
Sallinger says the company will continue to seek
acquisition targets to strengthen its enterprise
engineering portfolio and BIM strategy.
We have increased our appetite to do
acquisitions, Sallinger said, and hope this will help
us reach the next level of size and success.
The September acquisition of EcoSys
Management LLC was PP&Ms third of 2015.
In March, Intergraph announced it had purchased
OhmTech A/S of Stavanger, Norway, a provider of
pressure vessel design software for more than 30
years. OhmTechs technical and development staff in
Norway joined Intergraph as part of the acquisition.
Acquiring OhmTech and its Visual Vessel Design
(VVD) software represented a pressure vessel
market share expansion for Intergraph into Europe,
as well as the addition of multi-language support for
important European design and construction codes
and standards.
Blue Iron Systems, Inc., and its flagship radiofrequency identification (RFID) and bar code product,
IronScan, became part of PP&M in May. Blue Irons
founder and staff joined Intergraph as part of the
acquisition and are based in Calgary, Alberta.
SmartPlant Materials Mobile Scan (formerly
known as IronScan RFID) and bar code tagging
technology is a bolt-on application to SmartPlant
Materials that gathers material site data. The
technology allows Intergraph customers
engineering, procurement, and construction firms
and owner operators to track materials in realtime directly from the manufacturers and suppliers
facilities to the construction site and further into
facilities management and maintenance phases.

In Werlines words, his three-dimensional common view manipulation

cube allows users to easily and efficiently orient any 3D object represented on a
computer screen. This unique approach to
object manipulation and view positioning
uses no screen real estate and provides
an intuitive user interface designed for
maximum control and functional speed.
Werline has worked in softwares

visual realm for decades. Before joining

Intergraph, he served in the Air Force for
five years including during the Gulf War
as an imagery intelligence officer.
His patent-worthy idea began when he
was working with CAD packaging and
he had trouble orienting his module to a
common view. As he maneuvered his way
through the struggle, he found a way to
enclose it, show it and rotate the view.
SmartPlant Review is the first
Intergraph product in which he will
implement his discovery, and he later
plans to place it in a common location so
that other 3D visualization products can
use it.
So, now I have an official patent, and
I feel very proud to have my name on
something like that, Werline said. It
makes me feel very humble but also proud
to be a part of this wonderful Intergraph
family.

Insight spoke with Abdulhannan M. Karim, senior engineer

at YASREF, at HxGN LIVE 2015 Las Vegas about the YASREF
project, its success with Intergraph solutions and his vision of
where the industry is headed.

Insight: YASREF is represented well here at HxGN LIVE

2015 with a session and a press release stemming from
YASREFs implementation of Intergraph technologies for
a megaproject in Saudi Arabia. Can you give us some
background on YASREFs experience with Intergraph?

By M Y R IA H L E SKO

Abdulannan M. Karim (AMK): YASREF first started with

a technology evaluation that aimed to identify those products
and services that would satisfy the needs and requirements of
the project. YASREF has gone through a very intensive technical
evaluation of Intergraphs SmartPlant suite along with other
competitive products available in the market.
Having narrowed the decision to two product options, it
was decided to go with SmartPlant technology after considering
the commercial evaluation. SmartPlant engineering tools along
with SmartPlant Foundation met all of YASREFs requirements,
including data security and integrity. This was accompanied by
excellent service of implementation by Atheeb AISC.

Can you give us some specific examples of how Intergraph

software is being employed in the project? What benefits
have you already seen?

session on YASREFs multi-phase adoption of SmartPlant

Enterprise solutions. The session touched on both past
experiences and plans for the future. What are some
messages you wanted the audience to take away from your
presentation?
AMK: Quite a few messages were brought forth during the
session that I am happy to relay. For projects of similar size and
nature, we recommend to have:
Clear standards and procedures
Correct, detailed FEED
Review/audit/validate program throughout the project
Face-to-face meetings with EPCs
On-time plan for data validation

If you were pressed to choose the most significant issue

facing the oil and gas industry at the moment, what would
AMK: YASREF implemented SmartPlant Foundation as the
main depository system to hold all of the projects engineering data it be?
and documents. The project started with using the engineering
tools SmartPlant P&ID, SmartPlant Instrumentation and PDS.
Having the deliverables from all EPCs in SmartPlant
format, YASREF was able to uphold the utmost integrity of the
information on hand, and ensured the availability of the data to
all YASREF personnel in the right format at the right time.

What comments can you offer on the significance of this

project in the region and on the global oil and gas industry,
especially in light of current challenges?

AMK: The YASREF implementation has been unique and

one of its kind, considering the quickness with which the project
was able to be implemented and the overall short duration
of implementation. YASREF believes that it completed the
implementation of SPF (SmartPlant Foundation) in good time
and that the final data which was handed over from EPCs was
validated and audited just before the EPCs demobilized from the
site.
The implementation has now been completed, and the
engineering system is already in place, unlike other similar
initiatives in which the project is completed and the system is not
in place.
Due to the swiftness and efficiency of implementation,
YASREF has set a record in the region and is being considered a
role model for similar joint venture megaprojects. It is easy to see
how others would find value in what we have completed; initiating
the project with speed and efficiency means increased productivity
and decreased overall costs as the project moves forward.

AMK: We are all functioning in a very volatile environment.

Factors both within and beyond our control are steering the way
the oil and gas industry must operate all around the world. Having
the right tools in place helps navigate changes and volatilities in
the economic and industry climates, meaning that no matter
what happens, we are equipped to adjust our business effectively.
From an engineering perspective, I believe that creating
standards and procedures and increasing knowledge of
engineering tools are of top importance. These f actors d irectly
influence expenditures, and when expenditures can be stabilized
and minimized across all fluctuations, we see business prosper.

How do you see technology, namely Intergraph solutions,

supporting companies like YASREF and Saudi Aramco in
overcoming these issues?

AMK: YASREF is pleased and satisfied to be using Intergraphs

solutions. We are receiving outstanding support when it comes to
our engineering data. Moreover, Saudi Aramco has standardized
well on Intergraph solutions to enhance its capabilities. We see
this becoming a trend for those companies wishing to maximize
their productivity and meet the unique challenges of large-scale
projects.

Facing local challenges in material sourcing

The PT Rayon Utama Makmur Group facility in Solo, Central Java Province, Indonesia, will produce an annual 80,000 tons of viscose staple fiber
and is the companys second such international viscose project. Because of
Indonesias limited industrial base, Jiangxi had to import all materials from
China, and the countrys complex import procedures demanded that the
bills of material be highly accurate. Also, the installation was to be built
by local workers, which elevated the importance of producing 3D isometric (ISO) drawings for the construction. To address these design challenges,
Jiangxi chose Intergraph CADWorx.

Automating deliverables and expediting completion with CADWorx

Three-dimensional design work included three main factory sections

including stations for viscose preparation, spinning and spin bath. The
preparation area contains 19,500 square meters in four levels 38 meters high
with 580 devices and 1,000 pipes. The spinning area is 12,000 square meters
in three levels 21.6 meters high with 300 devices and 500 pipes. The spin
bath is 15,300 square meters in three levels 37 meters high with 540 devices
and 1,500 pipes. The ancillary design included alkali, acid and carbon disulfide storage facilities and piping.
The overall project contained 1,340 pieces of equipment and more than
3,000 pipelines totaling 55,000 meters in length with 64,000 fittings and
28 specifications. Diameters ranged up to DN1400, and materials included
carbon, stainless, galvanized, polypropylene, fiberglass reinforced pipe and
fiberglass reinforced plastic pipe.
It was the first use of CADWorx for Jiangxi, but the software proved to
be easy to learn. From training to final drawing, the project took only three
months, including specifications and equipment modeling, and all done by
just eight people.

Improving accuracy and reducing labor requirements

CADWorx helped the company improve the accuracy of the bills of

material from 85 percent to 95 percent and reduced labor time with the softwares automated isometrics and materials lists, saving an estimated 2,120
hours. CADWorx helped Jiangxi eliminate errors and complete the project
on schedule, improving customer satisfaction significantly.

SMARTPLANT MASTER TAG REGISTRY

New SmartPlant Foundation integration module automates
tagging consistency and tag registers for handover to owners

The launch of SmartPlant Master Tag Registry (MTR) offers a

new component for tag management and tag register production
that makes registers easier to produce with higher quality for
handover to owners. MTR transforms how companies manage
tags and register information required for handover and is one
of the first commercially available enterprise products to target
this systemic problem in the industry.
MTR leverages the inherent capabilities of SmartPlant
Foundation, Intergraphs total solution for plant information
management, for collecting and consolidating information.
MTR builds on this by providing specific functionality
to automate consistent tagging rules among supported
products and then makes tag register generation, management and monitoring dramatically more efficient.
APIs will be provided to support integration with
non-Intergraph applications.
Projects include hundreds of thousands of tags,
on thousands of documents, contained in hundreds
of applications, databases and spreadsheets. Traditional methods for handover involve the tedious
manual collection of numerous, key technical data
from numerous sources.
MTR Phase 1 is an important step for Technip by
offering an easy and controlled way in the delivery of
the data required by our clients for their operational
and maintenance systems, along project life cycle,
said Technip Project Information & Tools Depart-

ment Manager/Directeur Jean-Luc Hoffert. We look forward to

continuing close collaboration with Intergraph on the next MTR
development steps, with a central control of tags over SmartPlant
Enterprise.

INTERGRAPH SMART DATA VALIDATOR

Next-generation platform ensures high-quality data take-on
during operations

Intergraph Smart Data Validator 2015 (SDV) is a comprehensive data validation, transformation and migration platform that
enables companies to ensure the quality of information and significantly reduce the time and costs associated with data take-on.
SDV supports the import, validation and export of data, providing
consistency and traceability of the entire data migration process.
Monitoring and maintaining data quality is a significant challenge for engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) firms,
system integrators and owner operators across all industries. It is
even more difficult to manage when data is being moved from one
source to another, such as during project handover, brownfield
data take-on and data loads or migrations.
Poor mapping or inadequate validation during these processes
results in data that is not trustworthy and higher costs for the remainder of the facilitys life. Data handover can easily account for
one to two percent of the total capital expenditure (CAPEX) cost of
a project and often can take a year or more to complete.
Shell and Intergraph have worked closely together during the
last two years to improve the Smart Data Validator product. Smart
Data Validator is now faster, easier to use, more reliable and with
a much better user interface, said Mario Stevens, Senior Delivery Project Manager Engineering Excellence, Shell Global Solutions International B.V. The end-user communities in Shell have
expressed their appreciation for the renewed Smart Data Validator
product and are looking forward to start working with SDV globally.

INTERGRAPH SMART STANDARD DATABASE FOR

HANGERS AND SUPPORTS
New solution encapsulates standard engineering practices from
across many industries

Intergraph Smart Standard Database (SDB) for Hangers and

Supports is a catalog of dozens of support types with 330 preconfigured rules-based pipe supports and associated fully automated
drawing templates for Intergraph Smart 3D, covering multiple industries.
SDB for Hangers and Supports significantly reduces configuration costs for company-specific Hangers while providing end-users

a sophisticated library of supports that intelligently connect to the

surrounding environment so they will update automatically when
external factors such as pipe diameter steel size or location change
in concert with Smart3Ds intelligent rules and relationships.
The intelligent rules and relationships make configuration
changes to pipe and steel fast and easy since supports automatically
update, eliminating the need to delete and replace supports and
greatly reducing cost and the time required for quality assurance/
quality control of the model.
Myung-Su Han, General Manager and Engineering IT Team
Leader at HEC based in Seoul, Korea, said, Configuration, extension or changes to the supports can be performed without any
programming. Simple data changes in an Excel workbook and a
quick administrator upload into the database are all that is necessary to customize these supports.
