Even with the modern

annoyances of high gas prices,
traffic congestion, construction
delays and ever-changing weather,
Kitsap County is still a pretty cool
place for recreational driving.
Residents and visitors can pick a destination, or
just hop in the car and drive; knowing that sooner
or later they will end up at a bridge, a ferry or a
beach.
Planned or random, you can begin a cruise in
the early afternoon and be home for dinner. ➣

With the increasing impact on the
ecology of larger carbon footprints
and an expected influx of people to
the Seattle metropolitan area (and to
a smaller degree, Kitsap County) the
ability to hop in the car for an extended,
leisurely cruise may soon become a thing
of the past.
In the meantime, consider the path
between the Bainbridge Island to the
Southworth ferries.
The 45-mile trip, which takes a little
more than an hour to complete, provides
a fair cross-section of the county. It
is also a backbone route that many
residents use a portion to commute every
day.
From Bainbridge, follow 305 until it
crosses State Route 3.
Turn south and travel around 20 miles
until the road sinks down and winds
along the water.
Bear left on SR-16 and pass through
downtown Port Orchard. Go through the
traffic circle and take Mile Hill Road
until it too meets and follows the water.
Turn left at the sign for the ferry.
This is by no means a comprehensive
tour of Kitsap County.
You bypass the tourist meccas of
Winslow and Poulsbo, and only skirt the
shopping paradise of Silverdale.
Downtown Bremerton is off the track,
along with the wild scenic realms of
Hansville, Seabeck and Olalla.
But there are several remarkable
vistas, featuring diverse combinations of
mountains and water.
This includes a peek-a-boo over
Poulsbo, and a spin around the Gorst
inlet.
Traffic can move slowly here
— perhaps because the view is so
distracting.
This route is necessarily leisurely, as
it represents the opposite of the shortest
distance between two points.
Consider how the people on the west
side of Bainbridge Island can make
eye contact with people in Manette and
Manchester, yet it takes about an hour to
drive from one place to the other.
For this reason, Kitsap commuters
need to adopt a relaxed attitude. Parts
of Kitsap are reminiscent of objects in
a mirror, as they are often not the same
distance as they appear.
Kitsap is suffering its own growing
pains, but they are hardly as painful
as communities east of Puget Sound.
Seattle suburbs are being replaced, with
small vintage homes knocked down to
make way for houses that extend to the
property’s edge.
As much as Kitsap’s traffic has
increased, it doesn’t ever take an hour to
go 15 miles.
Changes will continue. Gas prices
will get higher before they go down,
more people will move to Kitsap as new
retail chains will deign to open local
outlets.
But such changes are gradual. While
we’re waiting for them to occur, we
might as well take a drive.

Kitsap County dominates the
eastern shore of the Olympic
Peninsula in Northwest Washington
state. You will find here stunning
mountain, forest, and water vistas.
You also get ready access to the world-
class business, trade, educational and cultural
amenities of the Puget Sound Region. We’re economic development community. When the

of life have set the stage for expanded
economic activity in West Puget
Sound.
Olympic College, with two
campuses in Kitsap County and one in
Mason County provides a wide range
of educational opportunities including
on-site and distance learning. Four-
year degrees are available from partner
universities.
Contract and continuing education
programs are available to meet the
specialized needs of local business.
The availability of a well-trained,
highly motivated workforce of 124,000
people remains the county’s strongest
economic asset. Approximately one-
third of resident labor pool travels to
jobs outside the county.
The remainder is employed by an
array of local businesses including
manufacturers, technology companies,
defense contractors, service providers,
retailers and distributors.
The strong work ethic of a
labor pool associated with military
employment continues to attract
attention from national employers.
Spouses of military personnel,
newly discharged sailors and retiring
personnel make up a well-trained,
highly qualified workforce.
With the addition of well-qualified
students from Olympic College,
private training institutes and local
high schools, Kitsap County remains
a desirable location for prospective of
employers.
County and local governments
are committed to job expansion both
in word and deed. Local officials
understand the importance of
diversifying the regional economy. The
adverse impact of defense downsizing
is clear and the desirability of
attracting new private sector jobs and
investments remains a priority.
Expanding and relocating employers
have received firm commitments
to shortened permitting timelines.
Public agencies are well positioned to
facilitate permits.
A new land-use information system
makes it possible to streamline the
process and check progress online.
The concept of business-friendly
government with a personal touch has
real meaning in Kitsap County.
Basic telecommunications
infrastructure in the Kitsap region
rivals that available in the eastern ➣

Puget Sound region. SPRINT has
installed a point-of-pressure (POP)
on the Internet in Poulsbo, making it
competitive with major metropolitan
areas.
SPRINT has provided ISDN
service at significantly reduced rates
to businesses and residences in their
greater Poulsbo region. Downtown
Bremerton is heavily wired as a result
of the Navy presence.
Several SONET Rings already
exist. Comcast high speed Internet has
entered the market with some of the
most advanced cable infrastructure in
the region.
Other players include Qwest,
CenturyTel, and Wave broadband.
Of particular importance is the
Kitsap Public Utility District’s creation
of a fiber optic backbone throughout
the county.
This now provides wholesale access
to the Bonneville Power grid. In the
language of telecommunications, this
is a 144-strand fiber optic network
that brings an additional OC-48 worth
of connection from outside and will
deliver it through an OC-48 Sonet and
Gigabit Ethernet.
The backbone is operational now
throughout the major population
centers and is being expanded to
Bainbridge Island and, subsequently, to
Port Orchard.
The cities of Poulsbo and
Bainbridge Island are creating wide
area networks linking their public
facilities with this service. Olympic
College will connect its three
campuses.
Cooperative ventures are being
formed with business parks and the
Navy.
Plans are under way to create a
teleworking e-hotel near Olympic
College’s North Campus in Poulsbo.
This high-capacity, redundant fiber-
optic telecommunications system offers
competitively priced and qualitatively
outstanding service to institutions and
businesses throughout Kitsap County.
In short, Kitsap is a great place to
do e-commerce.
Washington State Ferries provide
regularly scheduled vehicular and
passenger service to metropolitan
Seattle from at four terminals in the
county; Kingston, Bainbridge Island,
Bremerton, and Southworth.
Discover Kitsap
Passenger-only ferry services at
Kingston and Bremerton provides
more rapid transit during commuting
hours.
Bremerton National Airport
provides a convenient means for the
shipment of goods; a convenience
augmented by its adjacent rail line. A
rail connection to the deepwater port
at Grays Harbor cuts at least one day
off shipping time to Asia, as compared
to shipment from ports inside Puget
Sound.
Commuting within Kitsap County is
swift and unimpaired, with a four-lane
highway connecting most employment
centers.
Although we have good sea, surface
and rail access in and out of the county,
the growing perception is that Kitsap’s
future lies with telecommunications
and software, and so we continue
to build a state-of-the-art “virtual
highway” by means of our multiple and
redundant broadband communication
corridors.

Many oenophiles dedicate

their lives to the pursuit of
the perfect glass of wine.
Ditto for vintners
who spend a lifetime –
sometimes more – trying to
turn grapes into something
greater.
“We need at least two or three
lifetimes to sort out what will work best
here,” said Jo Ann Bentryn, who, along
with her husband, Gerard, has spent
nearly half a century cultivating wines
around the world.
After honing their craft in Europe,
New Zealand, Australia and South
Africa, among other places, the
Bentryns set their roots down in
Bainbridge Island, where they’ve been
growing grapes and making wine since
the late 1970s.
What makes Bainbridge ideal wine
country?
“Climate, climate climate,” Jo Ann
said. ➣

In simplest terms, she said, it’s not too
hot, cold, wet or dry to grow grapes.
Whatever the reason, Bainbridge has
become a wine hot-bed of late, with
several new wineries and tasting rooms
sprouting up on the island over the past
year.
Local vintners aren’t concerned about
crowding – besides being good for busi-
ness, they say, the influx of new talent is
a good thing for any visitors inclined to
take in tours and tastings.

— owned by Mike Lempriere and his
wife Beth Schoenberg, is among the new
arrivals.
The couple began making wine as a
hobby more than a decade ago, before
eventually moving to the island to buy
their own vineyard.
Last year Perennial produced its first
commercial vintage, a Muller Thurgau.
A September torrent washed away the
couple’s hopes of unveiling a new white
wine made from Melon de Bourgogne
grapes, which are favored in the mari-
time regions of northwest France, but
little known in these parts.
Lempriere said he may be able to
salvage the crop by turning it into a nice
sparkling wine.
His experience with the variety left
him wondering whether it might not be
“even pickier than pinot,” which is noto-
rious for its stringent climactic require-
ments.
Lempriere didn’t have to look far to
compare, since the Bentryns grow pinots
– that incidentally did quite well last year
– at their neighboring Bainbridge Island
Vineyards and Winery, (206) 842-9463.
After more than three decades on
Bainbridge Island, few would dispute
that the Bentryns are the island’s most
venerable vintners.
The winery is one of two on the island
– Perennial is the other – that grows its
own grapes.
Their methods, Jo Ann says, are
“salmon safe” – they don’t use irrigation
or insecticides and weeds are burned or
tilled.
The winery produces 10 varieties,
among them a Pinot Noir, Muller Thur-
gau and three dessert wines.
Though they don’t grow their own
grapes, Matt and Sarah Albee, owners
of Eleven Winery (www.elevenwinery.
com), produce plenty of quality vino
from their Bainbridge Island garage.
Their selections include a 2005
Cabernet Sauvignon Port, a 2006 Sweet
Sarah and a 2005 La Ronde, among oth-
ers.
The Albees believe the sampling of
wine doesn’t have to be a stuffy experi-
ence.
“Anyone who tells you that wine
tasting is serious business or tries to
make you feel bad about your level of
wine knowledge is just plain missing
the point,” they boast on their Web
site.
Other wineries are establishing island
footholds, including Victor Alexander
and Winery and Eagle Harbor Wine.
The number of island tasting rooms
also is on the rise – Harbor Square Wine
Shop & Tasting Room and the Living
Room both opened in 2007.
Though the industry is growing, the
Bentryns aren’t rushing to catch up.
They’re small, and proud of it.
“This is what we physically can
handle,” Jo Ann said. “There’s a lot of
hard work involved. I think we’re a bit
old-fashioned.”

resident, chances are you will ride one of the
Washington State Ferries during your stay.
The Washington State Ferry System (WSF) is the defining
feature of Kitsap County — it plays an integral role in
shuttling people around the Kitsap Peninsula, is the source of
a rich history unique to the Pacific Northwest and truly makes
Kitsap County a unique destination.
Ferries have splashed the waves of Puget Sound
since the early 1900s when small steamers known as the ➣

the Mosquito Fleet began servicing
the area — WSF actually came into
existence in 1951 after the buyout
of Puget Sound Navigation — and
continue to carry riders today, into the
21st century.
The Joe flows during the winter
as riders huddle inside rain-pattered
windows, peering toward the misty
Seattle skyline.
Summertime riders throw crackers
off the top deck to salty seagulls,
absorbing a sun glow from the nearby
Olympic and Cascade mountain ranges.
And while seasons change,
technology advances and fuel prices rise,
WSF continues to operate. With a few
recent additions, too.
Last year the WSF introduced
Wave2Go, a more efficient ticket
operating system, now available on
all domestic runs. Wave2Go allows
passengers to purchase tickets at home
up to seven days in advance, purchase
reusable multi-ride commuter cards
or purchase tickets at self-serve kiosk
stations inside the terminal.
Wi-Fi internet access also was
recently added to each of the Kitsap
ferry routes, allowing riders to get online

Getting around Kitsap:
You can reach Kitsap from downtown
Seattle via two ferry routes — the
Seattle-Bainbridge Island run and the
Seattle-Bremerton run — and both are
open to car and foot traffic.
The busiest of the Kitsap ferries is
Seattle-Bainbridge, a 35-minute-ride
each way.
From Colman Dock in Seattle hop
on the boat to Bainbridge if you’re
looking for a relaxing day-trip, or a nice
meal — there are about a dozen decent
restaurants in downtown Winslow, easily
within walking distance of the ferry
terminal.
If you’ve got a car, drive straight off
the boat onto State-Route 305 toward
Poulsbo. Downtown Poulsbo is quaint,
Scandinavian and home to more than a
few quality bakeries.
From Colman Dock in Seattle you
also can get to Bremerton. The ride from
Seattle to Bremerton is an hour, but on a
good day, is well worth the time.
The ride takes you along the south
shores of Bainbridge Island, past Fort

Ward State Park and through Rich
Passage, and will drop you in downtown
Bremerton.
You can access North Kitsap via the
Edmonds-Kingston ferry route. It’s a
short ride — only 20 minutes each way
— and will put you in small Kingston,
near Hansville. Drivers can follow signs
off the boat to Highway 3, which will get
you to Silverdale.
Further south the Fauntleroy-West
Seattle ferry route will gain you access
to all of South Kitsap. The best bet is via
car — you will be ab
le to cover more ground — because
downtown Port Orchard is seven miles
from the Fauntleroy landing. But the
drive is nice, and during summer months
a can’t-miss farmer’s market opens every
Saturday.

Tribes

Native
culture abounds
in Kitsap County

Here in Kitsap County’s

North End, two Native
American Tribal entities
— the Suquamish and Port
Gamble S’Klallam tribes
— are dedicated to linking
their past with the present.
Ten thousand years ago, the Puget
Sound water line was 200 feet lower.
The earliest tribal settlers developed
trails for hunting and routes to escape
or charge attacks.
Old-site seasonal settlements were
located all over the Puget Sound
including Dyes Inlet on the Hood
Canal, Poulsbo, Suquamish at Port
Madison, and Bainbridge Island at what
is now Battle Point, Lynnwood and
Eagle Harbor.
During warm months, tribes would
venture out to gather food. Their main
travel was either by canoe or by foot
along one of the many trails they had
worn into the area.

nard Forsman said there were trails
that ran along what is now Anderson
Hill, between Seabeck and Silverdale,
one from Dyes Inlet to Island Lake, one
from Suquamish to Liberty Bay and a
number of others in Port Gamble and
Keyport.
Winter houses were built in colder
months with cat-tail mats over the
openings to keep in the heat.
“I once had to clarify they were the
plants not cats,” Forsman joked. “That
would have been a lot of cats.”
In the earlier days, tribal members
practiced a complex spiritual system and
shared the same creation stories told still
today, said Forsman.
There are many places in the Puget
Sound have names that relate to a
creation story.
In 1792, Capt. George Vancouver
and his fleet set foot on Puget Sound
soil. From that day forward, local tribes,
including the Suquamish and S’Klallam,
struggled to gain their sovereign rights,
which were established after a Tribal
Constitution was written in 1965 and
the 1975 Self-Determination Act was
instated into law.

Port Gamble S’Klallam tribes’ pasts are
linked, they are drastically different.
Today, many Suquamish Tribal
members reside on the Port Madison
Reservation.
In March they celebrated the
beginning of construction for a new Old
Man House.
Construction is scheduled to be
complete in time for Suquamish tribal
members to host the 2009 Tribal
Journeys for hundreds of people from
Northwest tribes to gather and celebrate
their ceremonial paddle.
Suquamish tribal ancestors built the
original Old Man House in Suquamish at
Port Madison 1,800 years ago.
It was home to the great Chief Sealth,
also referred to as Chief Seattle, who the
city of Seattle is named after. Suquamish
comes from “d’suq’wub,” a Southern
Lushootseed word for “place of clear
saltwater.”
Cultural resurgence is one of the
biggest goals for the tribe, teaching
children their native language, history
and customs.
Many members of the Port Gamble
S’Klallam tribe live about 20 miles north
in Little Boston.
Discover Kitsap
S’Klallam comes from the Salish
word meaning “strong and clever
people.”
Before European settlement there
were many small bands of S’Klallams.
Today, there are three: Port Gamble,
Lower Elwah and Jamestown. Each
have recognized separate sovereign
governments.
The 1,700 acre Port Gamble
S’Klallam reservation is nestled next
to Port Gamble Bay, one of the last
remaining bays open to shell fish
harvesting, an important source for local
income.
The S’Klallam House of Knowledge
features a long-house, elders’ center,
library and career and education center.
A branch of the Northwest Indian
College is also located there.

while on vacation, Kitsap’s the right
place. The county is home to two
first-class casinos, the Clearwater

Commerce created for visitors a walking
tour map of Poulsbo’s historic core.
Three routes varying in length and
difficulty take travelers to some of the
town’s most picturesque places and
beloved landmarks.
Historic homes fall along the paths
designated by the Chamber, including
the Moe House, which was built in 1901
and served as a home for Ivar B. Moe,
the man responsible for giving the city
its name.
The former locations of Iverson’s
Meat Market and the Olympic Hotel are
just a couple of the other destinations
included in the tours.
And in true Nordic form, Lutefisk
makes its appearance each October, with
First Lutheran Church’s and the Sons of
Norway’s annual dinners, held within
three weeks of one another.
The Sons lodge also offers traditional
Norwegian lunches each Wednesday

Once the sunshine begins to peek

through the rain clouds, Kitsap
County folks gear up for the best
parades, food, carnival rides and fun
Kitsap County has to offer.
• North Kitsap. The streets of Poulsbo are
swarmed by locals and visitors alike the third
weekend in May each year to celebrate Viking
Fest. The event commemorates Norway’s
Constitution Day, or “Syttende mai” in Norwegian,
and is referred to as Norway’s national holiday.
Viking Fest is held at Liberty Bay Park
Downtown Poulsbo Waterfront and has sights
and sounds to please everyone. The celebration
features a parade, food vendors, carnival rides, a
car show, the Miss Viking Fest pageant and loads
of entertainment.
This year marks the 40th year of Viking Fest
and you can bet the streets of North Kitsap will be
teeming with activity.
• Bainbridge Island. Bainbridge Island has
its fair share of festivals. The Strawberry Festi-➣

val in June draws crowds from all
over to enjoy ethnic dishes and lots of
delectable strawberries.
The Strawberry Festival, hosted by
the Filipino-American community, takes
place in June and features a variety of
ethnic dishes including pork adobo,
pancit, rice, lumpia, barbecued chicken
and, of course, strawberries.

• Central Kitsap. Central Kitsap is
home to Whaling Days, which is in its
36th year. About 50,000 people flock
to Silverdale Waterfront Park and Old
Town Silverdale the last weekend in
July to listen to live music, eat great
food and get topsy-turvy on carnival
rides.
Whaling Days kicks off Friday night
with a spectacular fireworks display.
Canoe races and the Lions Grand Parade
take place Saturday and Old Town
Silverdale is lined with street vendors
selling all kinds of goods throughout the
weekend.
“We bring people together and we
bring a great variety of entertainment
for the entire family,” said Barry Iles,
president of the Whaling Days executive
board.
The Rotary Club of Silverdale
sponsors the Great Kitsap Duck Race
during Whaling Days which raises
thousands of dollars for the local
community.

a festival to say thank you? Bremerton
plays host to the Armed Forces Festival
the third weekend of May.
This year marks the 60th anniversary
of the event.
The Armed Forces Festival features
a stellar parade and free barbecue for
enlisted military men, women and their
families.
• South Kitsap. Port Orchard is home
to Fathoms o’Fun, which takes place the
last weekend of June through the Fourth
of July each year. Founded in 1968 as the
community’s annual summer celebration,
Fathoms o’Fun puts on a superb festival
every year.
The Grand Parade, carnival rides,
a scholarship pageant, concerts,
children’s events, a golf tournament
and an award-winning community
festival float draw thousands to Port
Orchard each summer.
The Fourth of July Sinclair Inlet
Fireworks Show caps off the Fathoms
o’Fun festivities and draws more than
60,000 people to South Kitsap.

each community, North Kitsap has great

leisurely drive or bike ride.
• Kingston. A bustling center of
activity, and not just because of its ferry
dock, Kingston is a hidden treasure,
offering a fine sampling of home-
cooking, great bakeries and cozy coffee
shops.
It’s a community that’s finding its own
way, embracing what it is today while
forging a path to a bright future.
Leading the way to tomorrow is the
Kingston Citizens Advisory Council, a
group of volunteer citizens.
Kingston’s Mike Wallace Memorial
Park is a great place to play or just sit
and watch the grass grow. The home of
the Kingston farmer’s market, the park
offers breath-taking views of the Puget
Sound.
In its first event each year, the
Kingston community invites you to
recapture — or capture for the first
time — the simple joys of kite flying.
Sponsored by the Downtown Kingston
Association, the event debuted this year
in late March.
The Stillwaters Environmental
Education Center also has its roots in
Kingston. Each year the center celebrates
Earth Day in April with Ecofest, which
has booths to promote environmentally
friendly products and offer a variety
of ideas on how to reduce your carbon
footprint.
The park also bangs and booms on the
Fourth of July. The day-long festivities
are spread throughout the hamlet and are
full of fun, food, games and live music.
The day is capped with a spectacular
fireworks display over Apple Cove at
dusk.
As the weather cools, the festivities
don’t. Kingston’s Community Center is
the gathering place for paying homage to
the community’s history during Kingston
Heritage Day in September.
Festivities galore are also the order
of the day for Kingston’s Country
Christmas in early December. Events
include a Santa breakfast, a lighted boat
parade and a tree lighting.
• Hansville. Lighthouse enthusiasts
are drawn to Hansville’s own Point
No Point, housing the U.S. Lighthouse
Society, which relocated from San
Francisco.
For those craving a stroll without
getting sand in their shoes, a network
of hiking/biking trails — the Hansville
Greenway — encompasses more than
175 acres of wilderness.

When it’s time to kick up your
feet for a bit of rest, Hansville’s Buck
Lake Park on Buck Lake Road offers a
respite for parents and a playground for
children.
Hansville’s annual rummage sale is
one for the ages. Donations are accepted
nearly year-round, and proceeds for the
sale benefits the community to fund
programs, scholarships and the Greater
Hansville Community Center.
Hansville is the perfect getaway
— close enough to be a one-day road
trip, while providing a relaxed, down-
home atmosphere.
• Port Gamble. Port Gamble is a
mecca of events suited for everyone.
March Murder Mayhem wakes the event
planners, inviting visitors to Wander the
streets of Port Gamble, piecing together
clues to figure out the intrinsic details of
how William C. Talbot met his final fate.
Participants are treated to food and
wine to assist in their mystery-solving
skills.
In April, embrace spring by lacing up
your shoes and hitting the trails for the
Babcock Farm Trail, an early-morning
four-miler. If you miss this running
action, you can aim for the half-marathon
in August.
Grab your fuzzy dice and throw a
fresh coat of Turtle Wax on your classic
car for Cruz Port Gamble, Thursdays,
May through September.
Or you can step back into the
Medieval period when jousting and
jesting were favored pastimes. Look for
this event, sponsored by the Society for
Creative Anachronisms, in late May,
early June.
Port Gamble turns back the calendar
again in June. Civil War buffs unite
when the Union and Confederate armies
clash in the Washington Civil War
Association goes all out, with hospital
demonstrations, music and historic
displays supplementing the action on the
battlefield.
Dogs are allowed — in fact, they’re
the guests of honor — as the Muddy
Paws Agility Club of Kitsap tests Rover’s
meddle in July. The contest is sanctioned
by the North American Dog Agility
Council.
Also in late July, artists and crafters
alike convene for the Kitsap Arts &
Crafts Festival, a juried and judged
show. Artisans throughout the Northwest
set up shop alongside food booths and
children’s entertainment.
Old Mill Days, which brings the
Ferris wheel to town, eases the transition
into fall in late September.
Port Gamble caps off its year by
celebrating Christmas in the new, old-
fashioned way. Port Gamble’s Country
Christmas includes caroling and a horse-
drawn carriage.
• Indianola. The town’s pavilion
hosts the Saturday market, where the
community goes to socialize. The market
is tourist-friendly, offering T-shirts
and other Indianola merchandise. The
crown jewel of events, Indianola days in
mid-August, brings out the sand artist
in everyone. Visitors from far and near
come to watch and participate in the
show.
The event is also home to a talent
show, a pet parade and a whole lot more.

trail, a wide grassy area and a 200-foot
stretch of beach.
Activities abound well into the
summer with two major events in
August. Silverdale Thunder brings high-
powered hydroplane races to the waters
of Dyes Inlet Aug. 9-10.
In 2005, Silverdale was named
the best race site of the year by the
Unlimited Lights Hydroplane Racing
Association. Spectators line the shore at
Silverdale Waterfront Park for the big
races.
The event also features a pit area
where fans can get an up-close view of
the thunderous hydroplanes.
Just a few weeks later is the highly
anticipated Kitsap County Fair and
Stampede which draws visitors from all
across the Kitsap Peninsula.
This year’s event is scheduled for
Aug. 20-24.
Highlights include carnival rides for
all ages, family entertainment, a variety
of vendors and all of the rodeo action
one could ask for including Xtreme Bulls
which combines the best bull riders in
the world with the craziest bulls out
there.
For those in search of a little outdoor
exercise, Clear Creek Trail runs right
through the heart of Silverdale. The
extensive trail system offers a little bit
of history along the way with several
placards explaining the area and how it
originated.
Events are periodically hosted at
the Clear Creek/Saq’ad Interpretive
Center, located off Levin Road, known
affectionally as “The Red Barn.”
The once-delapitaed barn was
refurbished in 1995 and, like the trail,
is supported by the efforts of the all-
volunteer group, the Clear Creek Task
Force.

With an extensive beachfront perfect
for skipping rocks or walking along the
shore, Scenic Beach State Park offers
breathtaking views of the Olympic
Mountains.
Seabeck is an area rich in history
which comes alive mid-August as the
community comes together for Crosby
Days. The day-long celebration features
logging and competition events, a parade
and train ride, carnival games, vendors
and an extensive car show.
Central Kitsap is ideal for any
watersports enthusiast with an array
of boat launches from Brownsville to
Misery Point in Seabeck.
There are several popular lakes for
swimming including Wildcat on Holly
Road.
The 11-acre park features basketball
courts, a volleyball court, picnic area and
a swimming area. It’s also a popular spot
for fishing.
Island Lake and Lake Tahuya also
are ideal places for a swim or even just a
relaxing day by the water.
Green Mountain borders Wildcat
Lake and is perfect for hiking, mountain
biking or an all-terrain vehicle ride. On
a clear day, Seattle’s skyline can be seen
from the top.
For the history buff, Keyport is home
to the Naval Undersea Museum located
next door to the Naval Undersea
Warfare Center (NUWC) Division,

The city of Bremerton continues a

major revitalization to its downtown area
with new business structures, restaurants
and high rise condominiums on the
waterfront called Harborside.
But wait. A three story colonial styled building that is
more than 111 years old has joined the facelift as the new
home for the Puget Sound Naval Museum.
Building 50 was con-structed in 1896 five years after
the Navy purchased 190 acres of land on the shores of
Sinclair Inlet and established Puget Sound Naval Station.
The structure was orginally built for the first office of
the shipyard commander and his engineers. Through the
years other shipyard shops inhabited it and it was even
physically moved several times. ➣

It was five years ago that an idea
was hatched in moving the building,
once again, but this time from inside the
shipyard to a location near the waterfront
in Bremerton to be used as a museum of
maritime, Navy and shipyard history.
Through tireless efforts by the Navy,
city, state and federal officials and
hundreds of volunteers, the building was
given a green light to move. Before the
move and the renovation, Bremerton
Mayor Cary Bozeman commented about
hearing that Building 50 was on the
move to the city.
“Someone told me the good news
that we had secured building 50,” said
Bozeman. “The bad news is I went
over and toured it. We walked around
the building and it was in pretty severe
disrepair and I wasn’t even sure we could
move it.”
All in all, it took 30 months to plan
and complete the operation of moving
the museum along with help from
Congress which helped get $1.6 million
in funding to renovate the building,
$200,000 to move in and another $1
million a year to operate the museum.
The museum now features several
different exhibits including; USS Parche
(SSN 683), Puget Sound Naval Shipyard
art, USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74)
Room, exhibits about shipyard workers,
a Dry dock theater, history on Building
50 itself and even a gift shop.
Exhibits will continue to rotate often
through the museum now that it is under
the direction of the Naval Undersea
Museum at Keyport and the Naval
Historical Society in Washington D.C.
Capt. Daniel Peters, commander
of Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and
Intermediate Maintenance Facility said
the new museum was overdue for the
area.
“When I walked into the museum I
thought it was a great way to honor those
who came before us,” Peters said. “What
a great use of the old building. I think
this is a connection between the city and
the shipyard, which has been longed for
throughout the years.”
The Puget Sound Naval Museum is
located in downtown Bremerton just
adjacent to the Bremerton ferry dock and
Harborside Fountain Park. It’s open from
10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through
Saturday and from 1 to 4 p.m. on
Sundays. Admission is free.

maintenance and repair of Navy ships

Currently it’s the only major, certified
nuclear-capable Navy shipyard on the
West Coast.
• Naval Base Kitsap consists of two
bases. The naval station adjacent to the
shipyard in Bremerton is the homeport for
the Nimitz class aircraft carrier USS John
C. Stennis. And now, in 2008, the base has
welcomed the Seawolf class submarines
USS Seawolf and USS Connecticut,
each with a crew of 140 sailors. NBK-
Bremerton can accommodate two aircraft
carriers simultaneously and has the
capacity to house 1,800 sailors in its six
bachelor quarters.
• The second half of Naval Base
Kitsap is nine miles north at Bangor
which is home to Commander, Navy
Region Northwest and the submarines,
USS Jimmy Carter, USS Henry M.
Jackson, USS Alabama, USS Nevada,
USS Pennsylvania, USS Kentucky, USS
Nebraska, USS Maine, USS Louisiana,
USS Ohio and USS Michigan.
To support that many submarines,
NBK-Bangor operates as a complete
support facility. It’s also home to the
Marine Corps Security Force Co.,

• Naval Hospital Bremerton located
halfway between Bremerton and Bangor
is a full-service military medical facility
that serves approximately 56,000 active
and retired military families with a full
range of services ranging from pediatrics
to internal medicine.
This is accomplished through a
staff of more than 1,400 military,
civilian, contractors and volunteers.
Medical staffers are also part of Fleet
Hospital Bremerton, which can be
deployed anywhere in the world and
be operational in 10 days. The hospital
is one of five family practice teaching
hospitals in the Navy.
• Another important element of the
Navy’s presence in Kitsap County is the
Naval Undersea Warfare Center
Division, located just east of Bangor.
The command is a major Navy
underwater weapons engineering and
test facility which opened in 1914. With
a workforce of around 2,100, Keyport
provides a wide array of services
supporting the Navy’s undersea warfare
systems, countermeasures, and aircraft
carrier tactical support systems. It’s
the Navy’s only maintenance depot for
torpedoes and mobile targets.

From Port Orchard to Poulsbo
and pretty much anywhere in
between, there’s no shortage of
spaces to tie up a boat or take it for

As a matter of fact, there’s nary a hot spot in
the county that isn’t within walking distance of a
marina or boat launch.
Even for those who prefer to stay dry, Kitsap
County’s cities by the Sound have plenty to offer
to keep people occupied.
Bremerton and Port Orchard anchor the South
Kitsap Region and the Port of Bremerton is the
go-to agency in terms of aquatic entertainment.
The Port oversees both the Bremerton and Port
Orchard marinas, which combined feature several
hundred feet of moorage and several dozen slips.

What’s Up

Located in an incredibly art-

centric region, Kitsap County is
home to artists of many stripes.
From the young, starving artist looking for a
way to make sense of life to the retired crafter
who finally has the time to sit back and enjoy
making art, to professional artists who illustrate
books and magazines for a living.
The downtown strip of any city in Kitsap
harbors at least one art gallery.
In Poulsbo’s case, there’s three or four, same
thing in Bainbridge and Bremerton.
South Kitsap boasts the Manchester Art
Gallery and the Sidney Museum and Art Gallery,
while Kingston and Silverdale have their own
artists cooperative — Kingston Art Gallery and
the Silverdale Fine Arts Gallery, est. 2007 — in
addition to Poulsbo’s Verksted and Bremerton’s
Collective Visions and Artists for Freedom and
Unity.
Artists cooperatives are a staple throughout
the county. A co-op is a place were a group ➣

of artists come together, pledging
membership and man hours to keep the
gallery up and running.
And each month there is typically a
featured artist at each place, which the
gallery fetes with a reception.
This past February, Bremerton’s co-
op, Collective Visions Gallery, reached
a pinnacle by hosting a statewide juried
art show with more than 200 works from
around Washington juried by Susan
Parke of the Museum of Northwest Art
in LaConnor.
The artists competed for a total
$6,000 purse.
A local artist, Chuck Smart, took
home first prize for best of show.
Smart’s studio, which he shares
with another local artist in downtown
Bremerton, is an example of a different
kind of Kitsap venue for the arts. Every
first Friday of the month he opens the
studio up for show as part of the regular
First Friday Artwalks.
During First Friday Artwalks, the
galleries clustered in both Bremerton and
on Bainbridge host block parties of sorts,
with receptions at each gallery on the
same night to celebrate the debut of new
shows at each place.
Local artists with downtown studios
get involved and local businesses looking
to capitalize on the artwalk foot traffic
also open up their walls to local artists.
Old Town Silverdale hosts quarterly
artwalks on the second Saturday of every
third month. There local businesses, like
the Old Town Custom Framing shop,
have been instrumental in showing and
celebrating the work of local artists as
there was no dedicated gallery until the
Silverdale Fine Arts Gallery came on the
block in late 2007.
Just about everywhere you look in
Kitsap, art is a community event.

the Kitsap Peninsula will find
a range of dining options that
make this side of the pond a
culinary destination unto itself.
Just off the Seattle-to-Bainbridge ferry, the
Streamliner Diner (397 Winslow Way) offers
breakfast and lunch and is a favorite weekend
brunch stop for locals.
At the other end of Winslow Way, Café
Nola (101 Winslow Way) scales up a bit,
although never too much. With its engaging
bistro style, fresh seasonal food, extensive
wine list and warm-weather patio, Nola does
“quick lunch” and “let’s linger over dessert”
equally well.
Originally the home of early Bainbridge

universe; as a bonus, the restaurant
offers an enormous weekend

San Carlos Restaurant (279

anniversary this year; along with
reliably tasty Southwestern fare and
killer margaritas, San Carlos has
cemented its place in island history
by holding a raucous poetry reading
each spring.
Heading northbound into
Poulsbo and North Kitsap, stop
in to the newly opened Taprock
Northwest Grill (760 NW Liberty
Rd.), which offers fine but
comfortable dining for the whole family
in a Northwest lodge-style setting.
Nestled in the heart of downtown
Poulsbo’s Front Street is the Mor
Mor Bistro & Bar (18820 Front St.).
The restaurant offers a changing
selection of steaks, seafood and
pasta at lunch and dinner along with
specialty cocktails, wine and artisan
microbrews.
Also on Front Street is Tizley’s Euro
Pub and Deli (18928 Front St.), which
insiders declare simply “rocks.”
This family spot has a deli at street
level with a full bar upstairs.
In charming Port Gamble, the Port
Gamble General Store (32400 Rainier
Ave.) serves breakfast, lunch and ice
cream daily; sit down and fuel up before
browsing the aisles of this classic, newly
restored dry goods store.
And worth a North Kitsap nod:
Suquamish’s Bella Luna Pizza (18408
Angeline Ave.), offering pizza, brew and
a view. We needn’t say more, except that
folks will travel far distances for an Uli’s
sausage pie.
The shopping and generally full-
service Mecca that is Silverdale has food
for every palate. Silver City Restaurant
and Brewery (2799 NW Myhre Rd.)
specializes in fish and chips, fresh salads
and crowd-pleasing burgers and grilled
sandwiches. It’s also Kitsap
Peninsula’s home for hand-crafted ales,
lagers and sodas.
Aficionados count the sushi at nearby
Hakata (10876 NW Myhre Place) as
among the tastiest they’ve had; the
family-
friendly Japanese restaurant focuses
on freshness and friendly efficiency. If
you don’t see it on the menu, just ask.
Anchoring a quiet pocket of shops
and businesses, the Yacht Club Broiler
(9226 Bayshore Dr.) serves up steak,
seafood and views along with a full-
service lounge.
In Old Town Silverdale, Monica’s
Waterfront Bakery & Café (3472 NW
Byron St.) has dubbed itself “the center
of the known universe for coffee and
comfort,” and its patrons agree. In
addition to earning a reputation for
yummy sandwiches served on house-
made bread, it was voted 2007’s best
bakery in Central Kitsap.
Heading south to Bremerton, stop
in at Anthony’s on the Bremerton
Harborside (20 Washington Ave.). The
famous seafood restaurant brings fine
dining to downtown Bremerton offering
spectacular waterfront views of the
recently renovated Bremerton marina.
For truly fine dining in a cozy
atmosphere, La Fermata (2204 E 11th
St.) is the place. With an acclaimed
wine selection and a quality menu that
changes periodically, La Fermata offers
first-class dining without the Seattle
traffic.
One of the newer additions to the
Bremerton restaurant scene, El Corral
has already gained a great reputation for
its authentic Mexican food, courteous,
friendly service and the best margaritas
in town. For those who enjoy true

Straight from the Punjab region
of India comes the authentic
traditional cuisine that New

Center and the Puget Sound Naval

waterfront view. Seafood is its
specialty, but it has something for
everyone in a relaxed atmosphere
that is second to none.
Continuing your taste-bud-
driven journey into South Kitsap,
you’ll find a number of tasty
destinations in and around Port Orchard.
Gino’s at Port Orchard (429 Bay St.)
offers a range of inventive lunch and
dinner dishes, from seafood
cocktail to pear ravioli to paella, all
with a complimentary view.
Also serving lunch and dinner,
Amy’s on the Bay (100 Harrison Ave.)
specializes in fresh seafood and Blue
Mesa Ranch All Natural Angus Beef,
with an emphasis on local ingredients.

it is the main aircraft carrier home-

burgeoning downtown arts district,

As Kitsap County continues to

grow, from the population itself to
area businesses to road expansion,
so too have sports opportunities.
While the county has long been a source for
sizzling spectator action, the sports scene in
Kitsap County is blossoming as much as it ever
has. Whether football, baseball or hockey is your
thing, you can find it in Kitsap.
• Football. Without a doubt, football has
shown the most growth among Kitsap’s semipro
and collegiate sports teams.
While the West Sounds Saints (of Silverdale),
the 2005 North American Football League 2
national champions, have long had the pigskin
market cornered, the team’s success has paved
the way for more gridiron Goliaths to kick off.
The Saints, originally founded in 2000 as
the West Sound Orcas, reached their pinnacle
in winning the 2005 NAFL2 crown. That has
since opened the door for a move to Division ➣
Page 120

I, where the squad won’t be lonely.
Beginning this year, the Saints
will be joined in the NAFL’s Olympic
Division (part of the Pacific Region of
the Western Conference) by the Kitsap
County Bears, a squad that will be
based on Kingston.
“The teams from the Pacific
Northwest Region are going to be a nice
addition to the league,” NAFL CEO Rob
Licopoli said. “We’re looking forward
to a long and positive relationship with
this area.”
On July 26, both teams will kick
off their inter-county rivalry when the
Bears and Saints meet at Silverdale
Stadium, West Sound’s home field.
The Bears will play in Little Boston.
Both offer some of the top local
semipro football entertainment around.
In addition to the team, the Saints
also field a dance team for halftime
entertainment.

The league begins in late June and
runs through late September.
• Baseball. As the area has grown,
so too has it’s collegiate summer
league baseball team, the Kitsap
BlueJackets.
The Jackets, members of the West
Coast Collegiate Baseball League,
feature a mosaic of baseball talent from
universities and colleges around the
country.
Last year, Kitsap made the playoffs
for the first time in its three-year
existence.
And while the league has grown off
the field, expanding last year to eight
teams in Washington, Oregon and
Canada, the team itself has grown quite
a bit on the field.
In their first year, the BlueJackets
went just 12-24, tying with the Spokane
Riverhawks in the league’s basement.
In 2006 however, the Jackets improved
to 24-18, missing the playoffs by just a
game.
Last year, Kitsap was 25-20 overall,
making the postseason for the first time
but falling two games to one to rival
Corvallis (Ore.).
While for their first three seasons
the Corvallis Knights proved Kitsap’s
heated rival, the team has also struck
up a competition with the Bellingham
Bells, purchased this offseason by the
Brett brothers (MLB Hall of Famer
George and brother Bobby).
The league itself is no stranger to
star power, with several players getting
drafted by MLB teams.
The league’s first commissioner, Jim
Dietz, was a legendary head coach at
Discover Kitsap
San Diego State University, coaching
then-future HOFs like Tony Gwynn.
The league has named Ken
Wilson, an inaugural Seattle Mariners
broadcaster, as its president.
The season begins in June and runs
through early August. The Jackets call
the Kitsap Fairgrounds Ballfields home.
• Hockey. The Puget Sound
Tomahawks (formed in 2000 as the
Kings) play in Bremerton in the
Northern Pacific Hockey League
(NorPac).
With home ice located at the
Bremerton Ice Arena, the Tommies
play a schedule that begins in mid-
September and continues though the
end of February.
While the T’Hawks finished just
14-34, fifth in the NocPac’s Pacific
Division, and went just 16-30 in 2006-
07, Puget Sound has been building
young talent that looks to get them back
to the form of the 2005-06 team that
went 31-13.

Horseshoe Lake in Port Orchard is a
fun lake to fish for trout and bass alike.
It is open from the last Saturday in April
until Oct. 31.
Another good lake around here is
Long Lake, also in South Kitsap, which
is primarily fished for warm-water
species such as Bass, Bluegill, Crappie,
and Perch.
Long Lake is open year-round.
Fishing techniques in the lowland
lakes vary from “still” fishing with
Power Bait to trolling a wedding ring
tipped with a worm to fly fishing. Most
methods will work — the secret is
to become proficient in your chosen
technique.
• Rivers and streams:
In the fall, when salmon are returning
to their native streams, the opportunity
to catch a huge Chinook, coho or chum
abound.
The most notable river for catching
any of the three species of salmon is the
Skokomish River — more commonly
referred to as “The Skok.”
It is not uncommon to hook and land
fish over 30 pounds, with the occasional
fish in the 40-pound range, but the
average fish will be around 15 pounds.
Fishing starts for kings in August,
then switches to coho by October,
then the chums take over the river by
December.
• Saltwater beaches/docks:
A lot of the smaller streams that
flow through the area are closed when
the salmon return, but the mouth of the
stream is a fantastic place to catch bright
fresh returning fish.
The solitude may be lost in these
areas, but the constant action of schools
of salmon swimming by make you forget
about anything else.
Starting in September and ending
near Christmas, check out Chico
Creek, Minter Creek, Gorst Creek and
Blackjack Creek, just to name a few.
There are also a couple of Public Piers
that are open year-round.
Waterman Pier in Port Orchard is
one of the best. Almost anything can
be caught from the pier — salmon,
flounders, sharks, cutthroat, perch,
herring, squid and even crab.
When you’re walking Kitsap County
beaches, don’t overlook the opportunity
to enjoy some of the finest seafood on
the Pacific Coast. Many beaches are
home to Pacific oysters, manila clams

and the geoduck.
As you can see, the fishing
opportunities on the Kitsap Peninsula
are endless and I haven’t even mentioned
salmon trolling in the salt water, Ling
Cod, Halibut or numerous other fish and
shellfish.
I hope everyone gets to enjoy the
natural bounty we have to offer in this
region and that everyone respects it. As
always, remember to check for seasons
and limits.
