Disneys Belle dream role for Recker

BY NANCY SPENCER
DHI Media Editor
nspencer@delphosherald.com
VAN WERT Its been six years
since Victoria Recker has stepped
out on the stage and the young
Delphos woman couldnt be more
excited.
Recker has won the part of Belle
in the Van Wert Civic Theatre production of Beauty and the Beast
that opens Thursday.
Belle is not your typical, run-ofthe-mill Disney princess, Recker
explained. Shes vivacious, independent, cares about her family and
she sacrifices herself for her father.
Recker had been searching for
a role to break the ice in her stage
career and happened upon the Van
Wert Civic Theatres website and the
audition information for its upcoming production.
I am so thankful I get work with
this fantastic cast and the directors,
Linda McClure and Dee Fisher,

Recker said. Its energizing. We

have so much fun, work hard and
have more fun. Disney is always
entertaining and inspirational.
Recker is a 2009 St. Johns High
School graduate and remembers her
role as Meg March in the schools
production of Little Women.

$1.00

I loved being on stage and everything about it, Recker said. Being
in theater is life portrayed on stage.
Recker has been studying her
lines, reading and rereading them
and bringing out her inner Belle.
She said she has her lines down but
you never know what will happen
when the curtain goes up.
We will rehearse until everything is second-nature, Recker
said. You can still screw up but the
show must go on.
Recker has a bachelors of art
in music and a minor in communications from Bowling Green State
University. She also participated in
a Disney course through BGSU,
marking her time at Disney World
in Florida.
There is no more magical place
on earth, she said. I worked in
the Animal Kingdom with the Big
Mouse. I had a lot of magical
moments myself helping guests.

Seniors earn CPR certificates

Forty-four St. Johns High School seniors are now certified in CPR. American Heart Association
CPR Instructors Paul and Cathy Harris led the course, which included the latest updates on CPR
training. The Harrises also teach CPR to EMTs. Each students received a two-year certification in
adults, infant and child CPR. Above: Sydney Fischbach and Jesse Ditto take turns on their dummy.

Allow me to introduce myself - my name is Colin

Kriegel and it is a pleasure to join the DHI Media team
for the Times Bulletin
and Delphos Herald as a
Community Reporter.
I was born and raised in
Delphos, where my wife,
Emily, a school teacher, and
1-month-old daughter, Evyn,
and myself reside today.
I am a 2007 graduate
of Delphos Jefferson High
School and a 2011 graduate of Bluffton University,
where I earned my bachelor of arts degree in comKriegel
munications.
I am a major sports fan,
including the Cincinnati
Reds, Oakland Raiders, and Michigan Wolverines (hopefully Im not flooded with hate mail for that one). I also enjoy
being outside as soon as there is even a hint of warmer
weather. I love movies, good food and spending time with
my giant family of four siblings, 13 nieces and nephews,
wife and daughteroh, and my cat, Junior.
I am beyond excited to start getting to know the Van
Wert community more and share with you the news and
events happening in the area. Feel free to contact me with
any ideas, thoughts, or opinions.

Kramer seeking Eagle Scout

BY NANCY SPENCER
DHI Media Editor
nspencer@delphosherald.com

DELPHOS

Delphos
residents can learn about the
Shawnee Indian population in
the Delphos area thanks to Boy
Scout Kevin Kramers Eagle
Scout project.
Kramer, 17, gave his presentation while his father, John,
recorded the proceedings for a
DVD that will be shared with the
librarys Genealogy Department.
According to his report,
Shawnee indians lived here
as early as the 1600s, sharing
the land with the Iriquois. The
Shawnee were forced from their
land after the Battle of the Fallen

Timbers in 1794 with the signing

of the Treaty of Greenville.
Some Shawnee hoped to
regain their Ohio land, including
Tecumseh, who hoped to unite
all American Indian peoples west
of the Appalachian Mountains
the United States. That is another
story.
Kramer said he hoped future
generations enjoyed his effort.
I hope people watch my DVD
and get the information from it
and learn about the Shawnee that
used to live here and why they
dont anymore, Kramer said.
Kramer also gave his presentation to fourth-graders at
Franklin Elementary.

Local/State
Victims mom: I just want justice for Hannah
BY MELINDA KRICK
DHI Media Editor
news@delphosherald.com
PAULDING Family members of
Hannah Elizabeth Fischer, who was found
murdered in Paulding Feb. 9, are planning
a vigil for her on March 12.
The vigil will be held at 6 p.m. at
Montpelier High School, according to
Hannahs mother, Lori Wheeler.
A suspect in the homicide, Frank Tracy
Jr., 47, has not been apprehended yet.
A murder warrant for him was filed by
Paulding Police Department on Feb. 11.
In a telephone interview Friday,
Wheeler, of Montpelier, expressed some
frustration at not receiving more information about her daughters death.
Im her mother and I havent heard a
word about how she died, she reported. I
dont know what date she died.
Late Friday, Wheeler went to the
Paulding Police Department where she
requested and received a copy of the incident report.
Wheelers birthday was Feb. 4. They
celebrated on Jan. 31, which was the last
time she saw Hannah. Hannah cooked
dinner for them at the apartment she
shared with Tracy. That was the only time
Wheeler visited the apartment. Mother

This photo shows Hannah Elizabeth Fischer, who was found murdered in Paulding in
early February. A vigil will be held for her on March 12. (DHI Media file photo)
and daughter last spoke on Feb. 2 by telephone. Wheeler said Hannahs phone was
out of minutes, so she tried contacting her
through Tracys phone the next day, Feb.
3, but found his phone was disconnected.
On Wheelers Feb. 4 birthday, she didnt
hear from Hannah, which she said was
unusual. Wheeler heard nothing more until

police came to her workplace on Feb. 10

and said her daughter had been the victim
of a homicide. She traveled to Paulding
and met with police, who escorted her
to Paulding County Hospital to identify
Hannahs body.
Wheeler had not seen a copy of the incident report released by police on Thursday.

the concert. Characters
will be available for photographs from 2-2:45 p.m.
General admission is
$10 per person.

When told that the report form lists no

injuries to the victim, Wheeler quickly
countered that she saw blood on Hannahs
head during the identification.
She obviously was injured, Wheeler
said.
Hannah Fischer and Frank Tracy met
through mutual friends, according to
Wheeler. The pair had been dating about
a month and a half. Following a two-week
trip to Maine in December, Hannah ended
up staying with Tracy at his Paulding
apartment.
Wheeler said that during the Jan. 31
visit, she asked her daughter if Tracy had
ever been mean or touched her. She told
me, No, Mom, were happy together,
Wheeler said.
Neither woman was aware of Tracys
previous arrest record.
Asked why she thinks Tracy has been
connected to the crime, Wheeler responded, Because her body was found in his
apartment and hes on the run. If he had
nothing to do with it, hed step forward.
Further, she said there must be evidence
against Tracy or there wouldnt be a warrant for his arrest.
I feel people know more and are afraid
to come forward, Wheeler said. I just
want justice for Hannah. She deserves it. I
wont rest until hes found.

Country
Saturday butchering fills freezers
BY LOVINA EICHER
We butchered three hogs
on Saturday. One hog is for
Timothy and Elizabeth. We
raised an extra one to give to
them. We had plenty of good
help, which made the workload lighter for everyone.
In addition to plenty of
good fresh tenderloin and
other cutes, we cooked
remaining meat off the bones
and used to make pon hoss, a
fried dish made from leftover
hog meat. We had enough to
make 12 gallons of pork broth
into pon hoss. We rendered
the lard, making around 18
to 20 gallons. The sausage
was put through the grinder
and seasoned with different
kinds of seasonings. Then
everything was packaged and
put in the freezers. We still
want to make summer sausage, using venison and pork.
We add the pork sausage so it
doesnt get so dry.
We made a breakfast casserole on Friday evening so
it was easy to put in the oven
on Saturday morning. The
men and boys started with the
butchering at 4:00 a.m. All
three hogs were really big
we guessed roughly around
500 pounds each. After the
men had the hogs dressed
(the initial phase of butchering), they all came in to eat
breakfast.
Our noon meal was a little later. On the menu: fresh
fried pork tenderloin, mashed
potatoes, gravy, chicken
noodles, dressing, corn, hot
peppers, lettuce salad, pasta
salad, cheese, homemade
bread, butter, strawberry jam,
banana cake, brownies, chocolate chip bars, hoho cake,
and ice cream.

It was a long hard day,

but I am so glad to have
the freezers filled for another
year. And the boys are glad
to have fewer chores out in
the barn.
Timothy is still on crutches and off work. His foot
seems to be in the healing
process and he doesnt have
too much pain if he stays off
his feet.
Last night, son Joseph, 13,
hurt his knee and leg. He
was pumping air into a cold
basketball and it blew up,
knocking him back. His knee
and leg are all bruised, and
he cant put weight on his
leg. We have an appointment
at the doctor this afternoon.
Sure hope its not broken, but
we will need to get an X-ray
to determine that. Joseph
learned a lesson: dont pump
up a cold basketball. Luckily
it didnt hit his head. I heard
it blow up from the house and
thought it was a gun being
shot off.
Schools in the area are
closed today, as we were
dumped on with around eight
to ten inches of snow. This

was a good thing for Joseph,

since he couldnt have gone
anyway. Daughter Susan, 20,
is off from the factory until
Tuesday. I am glad for her
help. Son Benjamin, 16, is
also home from work today
as his driver didnt want to
drive in this snow. Benjamin
has been busy all morning,
shoveling out walks and the
driveway. The snow is really
heavy, so hes going to be
glad for a rest when hes
done.
We are doing the chores
for my sisters Susan and
Verena. They will be gone for
ten days, staying with some
friends in Ellenton, Florida,
not too far from Sarasota.
They picked a good week to
be in Florida!
Recently, our friends Jim
and Ruth and their friend Sue
invited our family, Jacob and
Emma and family, and sisters
Verena and Susan over to Jim
and Ruths cottage by the
lake. Ruth and Sue showed
us all how to do CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation).
Everyone had a chance to try
it with the equipment Ruth

had. We appreciated the time

they took to show us and also
for treating us to pizza and
snacks. With all our horses
and buggies, Jim and Ruth
had to tie a rope from one tree
to another to have room to tie
all our horses. It is so good
for everyone to know how
to do CPR. We also appreciated one of the local EMTs
who joined us and showed us
more things to do in an emergency situation.
This week Ill share a recipe for pork chops. God bless
everyone! Stay healthy!
Glazed Pork Chops
6 pork chops
2/3 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon paprika
1 teaspoon sage
1 teaspoon dry mustard
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1 tablespoon water
Place chops in a shallow
baking dish or cake pan. Do
not stack or overlap chops.
Make a paste from the rest
of the ingredients and spread
over chops. Bake uncovered
in a 250-degree oven for one
hour, then 15 minutes at 350
degrees. Turn chops once
after baking 45 minutes and
spoon some of the mixture
in the bottom of the pan over
each chop.

Leeths late hoop

lifts Lancers to
D-IV District title

www.delphosherald.com

Sports

DHI Media Sports Editor
sports@timesbulletin.com

ELIDA The historic season for Lincolnview continues.

In front of a near-capacity crowd at Elidas Fieldhouse on
Friday evening, the Lancers survived a last-second heave and
won their first District championship in 19 years with a 52-51
defeat of archrival Crestview.
The go-ahead basket, an acrobatic reverse layup by senior
point guard Austin Leeth, was scored with 22 seconds to play
in this Division IV clash.
I didnt see back when Brandon Pardon and Wes Dudgeon
and Chad Pollock and Frank Kill, I didnt see when they
played, but I told Austin that has to be the greatest shot in
Lincolnview history, Lancer senior Chandler Adams said.
From where I was, I didnt think it was going in. It was a
heck of a shot.
For his part, Leeth said he didnt see the shot go in.
I was on the ground sliding and I was looking at our crowd
and everyone jumped up, Leeth said. So I assumed it went
in.
I cant believe it went in, Lincolnview head coach Brett
Hammons said. After three years of coaching him, Ive never
seen him make that shot. Im glad he saved it for tonight.
Leeths hoop accounted for the ninth lead change in the
back-and-forth contest, but the Lancers needed a defensive
stop to earn a trip to the Regionals.
With 6.5 seconds to play, Crestview senior Connor
Lautzenheiser drove against a pair of Lincolnview defenders.
There was contact, as there had been throughout this physical
game, and Lautzenheiser went to the ground and was called
for travelling.
I just saw one of the best players in the state of Ohio trying
to make a play, which is exactly what we wanted, Crestview
head coach Jeremy Best said. They made a better defensive
play. That was that.
Lautzenheiser finished with 36 points in the loss, including
25 in the second half alone.
Connor Lautzenheiser is a fantastic player, Hammons
said. Hes one of the best players in Division IV basketball,
and hes been an outstanding player.
Lautzenheiser scored 25 of the Knights 27 second-half
points.
Connor, like I said, is one of the best players at our level
in the state of Ohio. His performance tonight was historic,
Best said.
Hes probably the best player I have ever guarded,
Leeth said after drawing the defensive assignment against
Lautzenheiser. I face-guarded him the whole game and he
still put up 36 points. Hes had a heck of a career; hes a great
player.
While the Northwest Conference Player of the Year was
putting on a performance for the ages, the runner-up for that
award, Adams, had been largely held in check by the Crestview
defense. That all changed in the fourth quarter, when Adams
scored nine of his team-high 13 points, including a 3-pointer
which gave Lincolnview a 40-37 lead.
I think that three got him going, got him some confidence, Hammons said. From that point on, we were able to
isolate him on the block and he got some points for us. They
did a great job on him, and we knew they would. Coach Best
does a great job and they have a great team. We were just able
to execute.
While Adams is expected to score for the Lancers, Leeth
took advantage of the Crestview scheme to finish with 12
points, including the game-winner.
All week long, Ive been saying I need to get into double
digits for us to win, Leeth said. I knew that they were going
to double down on Chandler because of how good he is inside,
so I knew that someone else had to step up. I just tried to do
that as best I could.
In a game that more than lived up to the advanced billing,
Crestviews season ends at 19-6.
(It) doesnt take away what our guys did all year long. We
came up one point short of doing something that we werent
sure if we were going to be here about mid-January, Best said.
For us to be 10-5 and go on to win nine out of our last 10, this
team grew in front of our eyes, and our senior leaders, Connor,
Cody (Mefferd) and Cyler (Miller) were a big part of that.

COLUMBUS The 79th

Ohio High School Athletic
Association individual wrestling state tournament opened
Thursday at the Jerome
Schottenstein Center located
on The Ohio State University
campus.
Eight area wrestlers survived the 2-week-long
post-season by placing in the
top four at sectionals and districts for the right to compete

at the ultimate goal: The

Schott.
Delphos Jefferson junior
Hunter Binkley finished
fourth at the Troy Districts to
qualify for state (Division III)
in the 170-pound division.
Binkley battled Cole Draper
(49-6) of Sycamore Mohawk
in the first round of the
state tournament to a 0-0 tie
after one period. Draper took
a 5-2 advantage in the second
period and held on for the
victory.
In the consolation bracket, Binkley took on Trenton

Bradbury (43-5) from Albany

Alexander. Facing a win-orgo-home scenario, Binkley
recorded his third escape
of the match early in the
final period but trailed 4-3.
Needing points, Binkley took
Bradbury to the mat twice
in the final seconds but was
not awarded any points by
the referees due to lack of
control.
Binkley ends his incredible season with a 31-10
record and gained valuable
experience competing at the
state level.

Brett Vonderwell of
Delphos St. Johns placed
third at Troy after his football injury limited his season to only six weeks.
Earning a return trip to State,
Vonderwell faced Chase
Fetter (38-5) of Sandusky St.
Marys Central Catholic in
the 160-pound division. The
Blue Jay junior was leading
4-3 late in the third period
before Fetter scored with a
takedown with four seconds
remaining for the 5-4 victory.

Smith resigns as Cats

boys basketball coach

Blaine Hunter, the Elida senior, seeks to control Tyler Warner (Uhrichsville Claymont)
but lost 11-4 in Division III first-round action. He finished his career in high school in the
next round. (DHI Media/Rene Kleman).

Jefferson head boys basketball coach Wednesday. (DHI Media/File Photo)

DELPHOS Marc Smith just completed
his 11th season as the head boys basketball
coach for the Jefferson boys basketball team.
He had planned on staying around for more
after his post-season evaluation.
Some of the ways the world has changed
to the negative in his thinking changed
his mind to the contrary.
He decided to tender his resignation
Wednesday afternoon.
I had every intention to return as the boys
coach. That was my plan and my goal, he
began. However, there were so many rumors
in social media and in the public floating
around that eventually made it all but impossible for me to stay. With everything that was
being said about me and my intentions one
of the main ones being that when I first got
here, I was going to coach my son, Trey, and
then when he graduated, Id move over to the
girls side and coach my daughter, Trysten; but
there were others that I had to change my
thinking.
We have a lot of great kids that work hard.
It became apparent to me quickly that with

everything swirling about me, I would not be

able to have every player willing to follow
me, which you need to have a team. That,
and the fact that this situation was starting to
affect not only myself, but my wife, daughter
and even my mother, I felt it was best for me
to do this.
The coach went on to explain it was not
what he experienced through the school or
administration that caused this reversal.
I had great people to work with. John
Edinger was awesome to work for; I couldnt
have a better boss as a principal, he continued. The athletic directors I worked for,
Dave Hoffman and Chris Sommers, were
great people to work with. They got what
being a coach can entail.
I can take solace in the fact that others that
have preceded me here or been here before
have gone through this as well. Things that
happened forced them out as well and all after
having successful seasons, like we did this
year at 15-8.
Smith noted that this situation is part of the
new culture of present-day society.
It is not part of the culture I experienced
at Delphos Jefferson. This is part of the way
things are done today, he went on.

After the heart-breaking loss, Vonderwell battled Grandview Heights Benton Bair (36-15)
to a 0-0 tie after two periods. Vonderwell took a 1-0 lead with an escape before surrendering a
takedown with only 50 seconds remaining in the match to trail 2-1. Needing points, Vonderwell
nearly pulled off the escape to tie the match but lost his second nail-biter of the tournament to
end his season with a 25-13 record.
The opening round was also unlucky for Adas Chase Sumner dropping a 8-3 decision to
Rootstowns Brad Trescott (42-9). Sumner (40-5) bounced back in his next match to move onto
the second day of the state meet pinning Dylan Little (45-13) in the third period.
Also surviving the first day of action was Ottawa-Glandorf sophomore Daniel Beemer (452).
The young Titan was pinned by Tristan Anderson (57-4) of perennial wrestling superpower
Apple Creek Waynedale in the first stanza. In the consolation bracket of the 182-pounders,
Beemer shut out Bridgeports Carlos Kusic 4-0 to stay alive.
Peyton Hamrick of Parkway became the first Panther wrestler to qualify to the State tournament by placing second to Beemer at the Troy Districts last week. Hamrick was unable to take
the mat at the Schottenstein Center because of a medical condition.
Wayne Trace junior Ruger Goeltzenleuchter (45-3) outlasted Brandon White (45-4) of Cadiz
Harrison Central 4-2 to advance to the quarterfinals of the 120-pound bracket.
Fellow Raider, George Clemons (46-0), continued his domination of the post-season pinning
Galion Northmors Aaron Kitts (26-10) in 2:41.
Returning State qualifier Elidas Blaine Hunter (42-7) was the lone area wrestler in the
Division II State Tournament.
Hunter had the monumental task of facing 3-time defending state champion Tyler Warner
(35-2) of Uhrichsville in the first round of the 120-pound category. Hunter scored the first
points of the match with a takedown of the champion for the early 2-0 lead before falling 11-4.
In the consolations, the Bulldog seniors career came to an end dropping a 5-2 decision to
Dayton Carrolls Nick Berry (31-6).

Defense propels Spencervilles cage boys past Wayne Trace

BY KEVIN WANNEMACHER
DHI Media Correspondent
sports@timesbulletin.com
LIMA Spencerville head
coach Kevin Sensabaugh challenges his team to get stops not only
in games but practices, where the
Bearcats run a drill where they have
to get a defensive stop sandwiched
in between two scores.
Practice made perfect for the
Bearcats in a big way in the fourth
quarter of Thursdays Division III
District semifinal game with Wayne
Trace at Lima Senior High School.
Sensabaughs squad limited the

Raiders to two points over the final

4:37 of the contest and pulled away
for a 64-53 victory to advance to
Saturdays district championship.
With Wayne Trace on top 51-50,
the Bearcats got a basket by Damien
Corso off of a no-look pass from
Zach Goecke to give Spencerville a
52-51 advantage with 2:47 remaining. Following a Spencerville
defensive stop that forced a Raider
turnover, Goeckes 3-pointer from
the corner turned all momentum
in the Bearcats favor with a 55-51
lead at the 2:04 mark.
The Raiders never recovered
from there, hitting only one of their

final four shots and committing two

key turnovers down the stretch.
We challenged the guys to get
one stop, said Sensabaugh following the contest. It is something
we work on in practice and we felt
if we could get one stop and then
score after it, it would be big. We
finally did that in the fourth quarter.
Two free throws by Goecke made
it 57-51 before a Cole Shepherd basket got Wayne Trace within 57-53
with 1:06 left. However, Wayne
Trace would not score again and
Spencerville closed out the contest
by hitting seven of eight free throws

to seal the victory.

They are a good basketball
team, said Raider head coach Jim
Linder. We just were not able to
stop them. They have several players who can drive to the basket and
they took advantage of that.
Another key area in the second
half was rebounding. The Bearcats
doubled up Wayne Trace 14-7 in
the second half, including six offensive rebounds, in winning the battle
27-23 overall.
Rebounding was big, Linder
said. They were bigger, more
physical than we were at every spot
on the floor. It seemed like they got

every loose ball tonight.

For three quarters, the game was
almost as tight as it could be.
Neither team led by more than
four points in the first three periods.
Wayne Trace posted a 10-6 advantage midway through the opening
quarter while Spencerville held a
43-39 advantage with 1:10 left in
the third quarter.
However, the Raiders closed the
gap as Ethan Linder hit one of two
foul shots with 43 seconds left in
the third.

The behind the scenes
stuff, the practices, the
team meals, how they just
embraced all of these young
guys, thats not normal for
upperclassmen to do. Im
proud of them for that.
The Lancers advance to
the Division IV Regional
semifinals, which will be
held at Bowling Green State
University on Tuesday at
6:15 p.m.
This is just excitement.
This is something Ive never
done, and I know these kids
have never done, Hammons
said of winning the District
title. Its just a joy for them.
To come out here and play
and win this, our first District
championship in so long, its
an awesome feeling. Our fans
have been awesome all year

long. Its great; its everything as a coach or as a player

that you would hope it would
be.

deuce at the 2-minute mark
to give Defiance the lead
for good at 9-8. When Scott
nailed a 3-ball from the key at

Smith

1:10, Defiance led 12-8.

Defiances man-to-man
defense with Smiddy
guarding Elidas Josh Press
(13 counters) and Scott manning Daniel Unruh in particular began to to assert
control by holding Elida to
a 3-pointer by Press (5:58)
and a tough inside basket by
Peyton Smith (2:58). As well,
Smiddy stepped up for seven
markers, including his bomb
at 3:15 for a 23-11 advantage
before Smiths duo ended
first-half scoring at 23-13,
Defiance.
Defiances defense was
almost as good in the third
period against Elidas myriad of sets, denying them a
chance to get hot. Elidas
man defense also did a solid
job on Defiances set offense.
When Press who had foul
issues through the game
went inside for a deuce at
1:16, the score stood 29-19,
Defiance.
Press
scored
inside
at 7:36 to get the Dawgs
within 29-21 but a deuce
by Michael Menedez and a
transition bomb by Scott at
6:40 got the momentum back
in Defiances favor. Forcing
Elida to chase with its own
patient offense, Defiance
built up a lead of 45-26 late
as the starters and key subs

left the floor.

We started 2-of-2 from
3 on the first two shots and
then went 1-of-14 the rest
of the way. We were taking
shots we dont n0rmally take;
we seemed a bit too excited, Elida head man Denny
Thompson explained. Give
Defiances defense a lot of
credit; they are really long.
Scott in particular is really
good and who wouldnt want
a point guard like (Michael)
Menedez running their team.
I also wish we had someone
like (the 6-5) Smiddy; we
have no one that looks like
him. We have a young team
and I am thankful we had
a chance to be here in the
Districts and learn.
Elida downed 12-of-39
shots overall (3-of-16 long
range) for 30.8 percent and
3-of-8 singles (37.5%) versus
Defiance marks of 43.6 percent from the floor (17-of-39,
4-of-13 downtown) and 60
percent at the stripe (9-of15).
Jordan has done a nice
job for us on both ends. He
did a really good job of not
letting Unruh get going and
create offense for them,
Defiance coach Kirk Lehman
said. Having Michael as our
point guard takes a lot of
pressure off me as a coach.

He has played 24 games and

has 26 turnovers and about
135 assists, so hes a great
luxury. He gets the ball to our
scorers where they need it.
Elida won the board battle 27-26 (11-8 offensive) as
Baylen Stinson added six for
Elida and Noah Strasbaugh
had five for Defiance.
Defiance turned it over a
mere three times to 10 for the
foe, as well as committed 10
fouls to 12 for Elida.

(Continued from page 7)

For example, I had a disagreement with a parent before the season and though we agreed to disagree, we were able to at
least try to address a situation. This parent went through the proper channels and I have great respect for that.
What is hard as a coach these days is when it isnt handled that way and something that I may not even be aware of cant
be resolved. That is unfortunate and a disappointing part of being a coach.
When you try to please everyone, all you get is something blowing up in your face; to be successful, you will inevitably
have factions that dont like you and ones that do. I wont apologize for being a coach that tries to do what he feels is right for
his team and players.
As to his future, Smith will leave that up to God.
He has a plan for everyone and I and my family plan to follow that, wherever it goes, he added. This thing happened so
fast, I really dont know what is in my future except coaching; I feel called to it and I am not done after 16 years of doing it. I
came here to Delphos when many people had even heard about Delphos to coach basketball and its in my blood to coach, as
an assistant or a head coach.
I have begun the process of evaluating things and if this means we have to move, I can live with that. My family has always
been supportive of that desire.

Defense
(Continued from page 7)
After a Dakota Prichard
foul shot pushed the margin
back to 44-40, Ethan Linder
converted an old-fashioned
3-point play with two seconds left on the clock to get
Wayne Trace within 44-43
after three quarters.
Goecke led Spencerville
with 17 points while Mason
Nourse added 16 points
and five assists. Dakota
Prichard chipped in 14 for
the Bearcats, who improve
to 18-4. Prichard and Bailey
Croft also posted nine and

eight rebounds, respectively.

For Wayne Trace, it brings
to an end the careers of four
Raider seniors in Luke Miller,
Cole Shepherd, Justin Speice
and Alec Vest. Wayne Trace
has posted a record of 85-17
over the last four seasons
(.833 winning percentage).
What a great group of
seniors, said the Raider head
coach. They have played
in Regionals two years, a
District tournament and at
State. They have just been a
tremendous group to work
and are great kids.
Shepherd scored 18 points
to lead Wayne Trace in his

final game while grabbing

four rebounds. Vest chipped
in eight points and two boards
with Miller recording seven
points, five assists and two
steals. Speice also recorded
two points and a rebound to
aid the Raider cause.
Ethan Linder added 15
points, six assists and six
rebounds for Wayne Trace,
which closes its season at
17-8.
Spencerville advances to
battle Lima Central Catholic
at 7 p.m. on Saturday for the
District championship. The
Thunderbirds advanced with
a 71-35 win over Bluffton in

Thursdays nightcap.

Repentance is good for the soul

Psalm 32 is a wonderful psalm about the forgiveness that God displays

when we are repentant for our sins. It says in part: Happy are those whose
sins are forgiven, whose wrongs are pardoned. Happy is the man whom
the Lord does not accuse of doing wrong and who is free from all deceit.
When I did not confess my sins I was worn out from crying all day long.
Then I confessed my sins to you; I did not conceal my wrong doings. I
decided to confess them to you and you forgave all my sins. This psalm
reflects the great love that God has for us; however, when we sin and have
no remorse, we are opposing God. It is important for us to be sorry and
repentant for our wrongdoing as soon as we realize that we have sinned.
We should ask our Heavenly Father for forgiveness, make an honest effort
to refrain from sinning and, whenever possible, try to make amends for
whatever wrong we have done. The Bible tells us that God is ever ready to
forgive our transgressions, and keep us in His unmerited favor.
The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.
K.J.V. Mark 1:15

Library hopping with activities for March

Information submitted
DELPHOS Its time
to SPRING ahead! We are
all thinking of those warmer
days that soon will be here
in our community. We are
hopping with activity at the
library in March.
On March 9, your little
astronauts can come to The
Delphos Public Library for
an hour-long program all
about space! Our Twinkle
Twinkle Giant Stars program
last from 4-5 p.m. and will
end with some super space
snacks. Children will attempt
to recreate constellations with
toothpicks and marshmallows, create their own painted planets, and even try to
walk on the moon. Sign-up is
required and space is limited
to 25.
Were going mad at The
Delphos Public Library
on March 17! Children
in grades K-5 can come to
our Mad Science program
to get their experiment on.
The little scientists will run
through four stations worth
of programs before eating
a science-themed snack.
Experiments include squishy
circuits, exploding goo, and
building candy molecules.
The fun starts at 4pm. Sign-up
is required and space is limited to 25. To register for either
of these programs stop by the
library or call 419-695-4015.
March 7-12 is TEEN
TECH WEEK at your library.
This years theme is Get
Connected @ Your Library.
The Teen Room will be open
on Tuesday and Wednesday
from 3-5 p.m. On Tuesday, we
will be creating a green screen
studio for teens to create short
films and on Wednesday we
will provide materials needed
to create bristle bots. There is
no sign-up required for either
program. The Teen Room is
open to teens ages 12 and
up!
Page Turners Book Club
will meet on March 12th to
discuss the book The Girl
Left Behind by JoJo Moyes.
The group meets at 10 a.m.
and is always accepting new
members.
The library will have Lego
Saturday on March 19 from
10-11:30a.m. This is a perfect time for families to visit
the library and create Lego
masterpieces. The Easter
bunny will be hopping by the
library on Saturday, March
26 from 9-11 a.m. to visit
with children ages 0-8 for
breakfast and activities that
include face painting, egg
hunt and games. This Easter
activity is being sponsored
by the Community Health
Professionals of Delphos and
the library. This activity is
free to all children up to age
8. We look forward to seeing
you at the library.

A Girls Guide to Moving

On by Debbie Macomber
In the latest book by
Macomber, a mother and her
daughter-in-law bravely leave
their troubled marriages and
face the challenge of starting
over. Leaning on each other,
Nichole and Leanne discover
that their inner strength and
capacity for love are greater than they ever imagined.
When Nichole discovers
that her husband, Jake, has
been unfaithful, the illusion
of her perfect life is indelibly shattered. While juggling
her young son, a new job,
and volunteer work, Nichole
meets Rocco, who is the
opposite of Jake in nearly
every way. Though blunt-spoken and rough around the
edges, Rocco proves to be a
dedicated father and thoughtful friend. But just as their
relationship begins to blossom, Jake wagers everything
on winning Nichole back
including their son Owens
happiness. Somehow, Nichole
must find the courage to defy
her fears and follow her heart,
with far-reaching consequences for them all. Leanne
has quietly ignored her husbands cheating for decades,
but is jolted into action by the
echo of Nicholes all-too-familiar crisis. While volunteering as a teacher of English as
a second language, Leanne
meets Nikolai, a charming,
talented baker from Ukraine.
Resolved to avoid the heartache and complications of
romantic
entanglements,
Leanne nonetheless finds it
difficult to resist Nikolais
effusive overturesuntil an
unexpected tragedy tests the
very fabric of her commitments.
The Fragment by T.
Davis Bunn

In the newest high-stakes

historical thriller from master storyteller Davis Bunn,
skepticism vies with faith
amid the grit and grandeur
of post-World-War-I Europe.
Its 1923 and a resilient Paris
is starting to recover from the
ravages of World War I and the
Spanish Flu Epidemic. Enter
young Muriel Ross, an amateur American photographer
tasked with documenting the
antiques that her employer,
U.S. Senator Tom Bryan, has
traveled to France in order to
acquire. Although shes exhilarated to have escaped her
parents and the confines of
their stifling Virginia home,
Muriel has lingering questions about why the senator
has chosen her for this grand
adventure.
Nevertheless,
she blossoms in her new
surroundings, soaking up
Parisian culture and capturing
the sights and sounds of Paris
on her camera. But events
take a dangerous turn when
she discovers that the senator is on a mission far more
momentousand potentially
deadlythan a mere shopping trip. At the Cathedral of
Notre Dame, Senator Bryan
asks Muriel to photograph an
astonishing artifact: a piece
of the True Cross, discovered by Empress Helenaa
historical figure familiar to
readers of The Pilgrim. When
rumors surface that another
fragment has been unearthed,
Muriel becomes enmeshed in
a covert international alliance
dedicated to authenticating
the fragmentand protecting
it from those who will stop at
nothing to steal and discredit
it.
Doubters Almanac by
Ethan Canin
Milo Andret is born with
an unusual mind. A lonely
child growing up in the woods
of northern Michigan in the
1950s, he gives little thought
to his own talent. But with his
acceptance at U.C. Berkeley
he realizes the extent, and
the risks, of his singular gifts.
California in the seventies is
a seduction, opening Milos
eyes to the allure of both
ambition and indulgence.
The research he begins there
will make him a legend; the
woman he meets thereand
the rival he meets alongside
herwill haunt him for the
rest of his life. For Milos
brilliance is entwined with a
dark need that soon grows to
threaten his work, his family,
even his existence.

Opinion
The
On the
value of
a dollar Other Hand

Nancy Spencer

I received this in an e-mail to my mother and

thought it was very interesting. I do not know
who the author is. Before beginning, please take
out a one dollar bill.
The Dollar Bill
Take out a one dollar bill and look at it. It first
came off the presses in 1957 in its present design.
This so-called paper money is in fact a cotton
and linen blend, with red and blue minute silk
fibers running through it. A special blend of ink
is used, the contents we will never know. It is
overprinted with symbols and then it is starched
to make it water resistant and pressed for that
crisp look.
We are most familiar with what is on the
front of the bill. What is on the back of that dollar bill is something we should all know.
If you turn the bill over, you will see two circles. Both circles, together, comprise the Great
Seal of the United States. The First Continental
Congress requested that Benjamin Franklin and
a group of men come up with a Seal. It took
them four years to accomplish this task and
another two years to get it approved.
If you look at the left-hand circle, you will
see a Pyramid. Notice the face is lighted and
the western side is dark. This country was
just beginning. We had not begun to explore
the West or decided what we could do for
Western Civilization. The Pyramid is uncapped,
again signifying that we were not even close to
being finished. Inside the capstone you have the
all-seeing eye, an ancient symbol for divinity. It
was Franklins belief that one man couldnt do it
alone but a group of men, with the help of God,
could do anything.
IN GOD WE TRUST is on this curren-

JUST A
THOUGHT
To the graduating classes
of 2016: Today is your day.
Your mountain is waiting!
Soget on your way.
Oops. Wrong author.
(Though I wish Id written
that.) Yes, Dr. Seuss has
dispensed some wonderful,
essential advice over the
years, and Oh, the Places
Youll Go! has become a
staple graduation party gift.
So I thought Id put in my
two cents and share with the
graduating seniors what I
learned in college.
As much as I love my situation now, college really did
comprise the best years of
my life. Im happy now, but
in a different way. College is
just the one time of my life
when I had the most carefree
fun, without having to worry
about a lot of responsibilities
like I do now. I chose to go
to a college that no one in my
graduating high school class
went to, because I loved the
idea of starting over. The
cliques from high school are
no more in college. Youre
a brand-new person, a clean
slate. No one in college had
any preconceived notions
about me, and I could be
whomever I wanted, who I
really was. College really
solidified my personality. Be
open to meeting new people
of all different backgrounds,
and let them challenge your
long-held beliefs. You might
change a lot of your thinking
at college. And thats okay.
Its all about learning and
growing. And I am eternally grateful for the friends
I made who have forever
altered my perceptions.
Enjoy your ability to do
what you want. Looking
back, I took for granted all
the freedom I had. Dont take
this freedom for granted. You
will, though, just like I did,

cy. The Latin above the pyramid, AN UIT

COEPTIS, means, God has favored our undertaking. The Latin below the pyramid, NOVUS
ORDO SECLORUM, means, a new order has
begun. At the base of the pyramid is the Roman
Numeral for 1776.
The right-hand circle is on every National
Cemetery in the United States. Slightly modified, it is the seal of the President of the United
States and it is always visible whenever he
speaks, yet very few people know what the
symbols mean.
The Bald Eagle was selected as a symbol for
victory for two reasons. First, he is not afraid of
a storm; he is strong and he is smart enough to
soar above it. Secondly, he wears no material
crown. We had just broken from the King of
England. Also, notice the shield is unsupported.
This country can now stand on its own. At the
top of that shield you have a white bar signifying
congress, a unifying factor. We were coming
together as one nation. In the eagles beak you
will read, E PLURIBUS UNUM, meaning,
one nation from many people.
Above the eagle, you have 13 stars, representing the 13 original colonies, and any clouds
of misunderstanding rolling away.
Notice what the eagle holds in his talons
an olive branch and arrows. The eagle always
wants to face the olive branch but in time of war,
his gaze turns toward the arrows.
Many people do not know this, including
history teachers. Too many veterans have given
up too much to ever let the meaning fade. Many
veterans remember coming home to an America
that didnt care. Too many veterans never came
home at all.

If I knew
then what I
know now

because until you are married with children, you cant

quite grasp how your life
will change. So while you
have the chance, go out
go to parties, go to clubs,
go anywhere. Youre young,
and youll bounce back much
more quickly than you will
ten years from now. A hangover is never fun, but its
much less fun with a needy
toddler or two screaming in
your ear.
In between the parties,
think about what you want
to be when you grow up. Ill
turn 37 this month and I still
dont know, so dont sweat it
if you dont, but choose your
major carefully. Research
your chances of getting a job
in that field. Do what youre
passionate about, or youll
never succeed at least not
to your full potential. Get to
know your professors. Even
if youre in a class that has
stadium seating, stay after
class or go to the professors
office hours. Make your presence known. This helped me
tremendously. It shows you
really care about the class,
and instructors care more for
students who care. Im still in
touch with several of my college professors, who I now
consider friends.
Take chances. Be impulsive. This goes back to the
being young thing. Leave
college with no regrets. I
once skipped two days of
class and took a Greyhound
to an Aerosmith concert. And
it was a blast. I also bought
an albino Burmese python
on a whim, which caused my
roommate to sprint out of the
apartment in tears. (Sorry,
Stacey). Now Im not suggesting you follow my lead
here; these are just personal
examples. But you want stories to tell your grandchil-

dren, right? No matter what,

though, be careful. Always
protect yourself and that
goes for more than seat belts.
Speaking of roommates,
you might be forced to live
with someone you dont like.
Even if he or she is your
BFF when you get to college,
living together is not always
a picnic, so there might be
times you want to strangle
this person. (This will adequately help prepare you for
marriage, as someday in the
distant future you will certainly want to strangle your
spouse on a semi-regular
basis.) If you get bummed
about roommate issues, get
out of the dorm or apartment for a while. Take a
run or a drive. Call someone from home. Tell yourself
that this, too, shall pass. Bad
roommates at least let you
appreciate it when you get
a good oneand if nothing
else, again this might give
you some stories for your
grandchildren.
Basically, when you go
off to college, live it up.
Study as hard as you party;
I dont mean to minimize the
importance of academics. Do
all your homework, and do it
well. Push yourself to try and
get the best grades possible.
If theres something youre
struggling with, get a tutor.
(And then you can reward
yourself for getting straight
As by buying an exotic pet!)
But live in the moment. Have
fun and try not to worry
about too much; you have
plenty of time for that in the
future. Graduate college with
no regretsbecause one day
when youre running late for
work as youre cleaning baby
puke off your shirt, youll
really wish you had gone to
that toga party in the fall of
2016.

Dream a little green

The first seed catalog landed in our mailbox

Saturday, reminding me of
tomatoes warmed in the sun,
vine squashes and all the
lovely green that brings them
on. I turn the pages and fantasize about bushel gourds
to dry, carve and paint, then
remember the bushel gourds
we grew 10 years ago that are
quite dry and waiting for an
inspired hand a decade after
their harvest.
Two years ago, my Steven
built three raised garden
beds. We bought bags of topsoil to fill them. The hens,
who keep us company in all
yard work, scratched and
turned the soil as I worked
the rich dark stuff free of its
plastic casing. I planted one
bed with lettuces. The girls
puffed their feathers and followed along, scratching and

Anne Coburn-Griffis
turning the soil again until
the little seeds flipped into
the air and into their hungry
beaks. So we planted lettuces
in pots and grew a container
garden instead.
Prior to chickens, I grew
herbs. We used the culinary
herbs: oregano, thyme, mint,

chives and borage. We also

planted healing and medicinal herbs like St. Johns
Wort, bee balm, comfrey and
ephedra, until I found out the
latter was essentially rapid
weight loss speed and St.
Johns Wort isnt good for
donkeys and goats.
We marveled at the bees
and butterflies that were
drawn to all. So were the
donkeys and goats. So last
summer, I planted lavender
and coneflowers in a small
high-fenced plot and the new
plants weathered this mild
winter. As the catalogs continue to plant dreams of flowers and fresh veg, I carry a
packet of lettuce seed around
in my purse, just in case I feel
like throwing a few potential
salads in where the chickens
wont find them.

Letters to the Editor

TO THE EDITOR:
At a time of great political
polarization its great to see
a candidate for elected office
who understands what it takes
to get work done in Columbus.
Craig Riedel is that candidate.
Craig is running for State
Representative and displays a
combination of values-based
leadership along with a
healthy dose of pragmatism.
If you talk with Craig, you
quickly understand that his
strong values and beliefs will
guide his service in the state
house. But he also understands what it takes to govern
which is an ability to find
the middle and make progress
in incremental steps.
I am excited to see Craig
run for this seat. He possesses
the passion, conviction and
thoughtfulness to be a great
legislator. I hope others will
join me in supporting a candidate who represents a fresh
voice in the political landscape.
Sincerely,
Gary M. Cates

DEAR EDITOR:
Id like to explain why Matt Huffman is the best candidate
on the March 15 ballot for the 12th District Senate seat. Matt
was a great leader on Lima City Council and in his years in the
House of Representatives - but what I want to talk about are
his values and his character.
Matt is deeply committed to the values our Founding
Fathers expressed in the Declaration of Independence: We are
endowed by our Creator with human rights. The Right to Life
was the first right mentioned in the Declaration because it is
fundamental. Due to his profound dedication to that principle,
Huffman is the only candidate for the 12th District Senate seat
endorsed by Ohio Right to Life. There are other pro-life candidates in the GOP - but no one is a stronger or more effective
defender of the unborn, the disabled, and the unwanted than
Matt Huffman.
Matt is also a strong defender of the Right to Bear Arms.
It was put into the Constitution because our Founding Fathers
knew it was part of a free peoples bedrock defense of liberty.
Matt is endorsed by Congressman Jordan because of these
views and because he stands for small government, freedom
from excessive government regulation, and free enterprise.
Matt is especially strong when it comes to constituent services.
Nothing pleases Matt more than helping his constituents deal
with government bureaucracies. Matt gets results.
Spend a few minutes visiting matthuffman.org. Youll see
that Matt is the best candidate in the 12th Senate District. Cast
your State Senate vote for Matt Huffman on March 15.

DEAR EDITOR,
This letter is being written to voice my support for Staci
Kaufman who is a candidate for Van Wert County commissioner and to urge support for her from your readers.
With her business background and her position as superintendent of Vantage Vocational School, she is in the unique
position of having her finger on the pulse of Van Wert
County and is aware of the challenges and successes of this
county.
She is committed to producing a workforce capable of
filling the jobs provided by the industry infrastructure of
our county and is committed to growing that industry base
to provide jobs for the emerging and established workforce.
She is connected to a wide spectrum of county groups
ranging from the arts to service clubs to educational institutions.
I know Staci as a compassionate, genuine, and goaloriented person who is a natural leader. Her strengths
include accountability measures, budgeting, and strategic
planning as shown by the passage of a bond levy in 2009
which provided for a complete renovation and expansion
of Vantage, and the development of a one MW solar array
which saves the school district an average of $50,000 per
year in utility electric costs.
Staci is energetic and enthusiastic and approaches each
problem, project, and/or task as a new challenge to be
looked at, worked on, and, finally, successfully overcome
or completed.
My support in the Van Wert County commissioner election March 15 is for Staci Kaufman.

TO THE EDITOR,
Last month Craig Riedel and his wife, Danette, stopped
by my house as they were going door to door speaking with
voters. It was very cold outside so I invited them in our house
to warm up. Craig told me he was running for the 82 House
District because he believes that this country needs strong
Christian leadership more now than ever, and he is the man
for the job. Craig has no political background and has spent
27 years in the private sector. He is a fiscal conservative who
is also Pro Life and Pro 2nd Amendment.
As my wife and I spoke to him and Danette it became
obvious to me that he is exactly the kind of person I want to
elect for political office. He stands by what he says and will go
to Columbus and come up with solutions to the issues which
currently confront us all.
Today, governments will have to respond faster and develop the political maturity and leadership needed to help our
society navigate the rapid pace of change. Those who govern
will need to reset their intuition, just as business leaders will.
I believe that Craig Riedel will strive to restore our priorities
and use his talent too profoundly outpace our current policy
makers. I often marvel at individuals who can fuel creativity
and drive change in the world.I believe I met one of these
individuals on a cold winter day walking door to door down
Glynwood Road in Wapakoneta.
Please give Craig Riedel your vote for Ohios 82nd House
District.

DEAR EDITOR:
Like most people, Im fed
up with all the negative political attack ads, and one specific
race not only makes me mad,
but its clearly untruthful. Its
the ad attacking Tony Burkley
for State Representative. Larry
and I first met Tony and his
wife, Nancy, when they began
attending our church here in
Van Wert over 20 years ago.
We were drawn to them as a
couple and through the years,
we have done many, many
things with them.
We know the Burkleys. We
know and believe in Tony so
much that when he first ran for
state representative, we along
with our kids helped him with
his campaign by passing out
his pamphlet in parades around
our county, going door to door
in Van Wert and a few surrounding towns and placing
signs in yards.
Tony is a Christian man of
integrity who owns his own
business in Paulding. Being
a business owner means he
understands the risks and
responsibilities that come with
owning your own business
which is why he works so
hard for small businesses and
farmers.he understands their
everyday concerns. Tony has
been able to grow and expand
his own business several times
because of his conservative
fiscal management and he promotes legislation that reflects
his conservatism.
A false point made in this
TV/radio ad is that Tony voted
to give himself a raise. The
fact is, the legislature voted to
give LOCAL elected officials a
raise. They did not take a raise
themselves.
And, I dont consider Tony
a career politician. To me, his
experience in county government is an asset. We are fortunate to have someone with his
level of experience.
Thank you for reading, and
please vote on March 15. I
already voted early.

Kramer
State fire marshal continues
to encourage heating fire safety
as winter wraps up

(Continued from page 1)

Information submitted
The saying, March comes in like a
lion, and out like a lamb, holds true in
Ohio, and although we are close to the
end of winter, we are not out of the woods
yet. That is why the Division of State Fire
Marshal is reminding Ohioans to continue practicing the messages of its Safe &
Sound campaign: safely using alternative
heating sources and equipping their homes
with working smoke alarms.
Fourteen Ohioans lost their lives in
fires in February, bringing the total for
2016 to 30. Of those 30 lives lost, at least
18 were Ohioans over the age of 60. That
is roughly 60% of all fire deaths so far
this year, a number the Division notes is
unusually high.
Unfortunately, we often see that older
Ohioans are at an increased risk of the
hazards of fire, said State Fire Marshal
Larry L. Flowers. Thus, it is imperative
that we remember our elderly loved ones
and neighbors. By working together, we
can create a safer and stronger Ohio, free

from the dangers of fire.

The State Fire Marshals office suggests
checking in on elderly or disabled family
members, friends and neighbors. Offer to
visit their homes on a regular basis, testing
their smoke alarms at least once a month
and conducting home safety inspections
for them. Ohioans across the state should
not hesitate to reach out to their local fire
departments should they need any advice
or assistance. The American Red Cross is
an excellent organization for this as well,
and can even help those in need obtain
smoke alarms designed for the deaf or hard
of hearing.
Another Safe & Sound partner, the
Ohio Development Services Agency, has a
Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP)
which helps eligible Ohioans pay their
home energy bill. Information on this
program can be found by visiting the
Development Services Agencys website.
For more information about the Safe &
Sound campaign and additional fire safety
tips, please visit the State Fire Marshals
website or twitter page.
