BOAT IMPACT CALCULATION

1.0 GENERAL
The purpose of the Boat Impact Calculation is to check capacity of pile and jacket Leg to withstand load from the boat collision.
Piles, Jacket Leg and pile safety factor (compression and tension) are the critical parameter that will be checked in this calculations.
In the collision (Boat Impact), the kinetic energy is absorbed by elastic deformation of the ship, and the platform (and or fender system if any).
Platform (Structure) will absorb energy by local deformation (dent member) and global deformation.
The calculation procedure and basis teory is taken fron Company General specification GS EP STR 101 & 105.
Asssuption & Consideration:
1.
Impact Energy assumed to be absorbed by structure only (by denting member & global platform deformation), absorbing by ship deformation is neglected.
2.
Collision location is assumed occurred at one (1) point of jacket leg only, around MSL. Boat impact on the another jacket part (bracing, surfer landing)
are excluded from these study.
3.
Ultimate Platform Capacity to absorb energy is capability of the platform to absorb energy before Leg and or Pile just to reach UC = 1.0,
or before Pile Safety Factor reaching minimum requirement.
5.
Boat impact load are combined with platform operating load (environmental and gravity load) for verify member stress check & pile capacity.
4.
Allowable stress & minimum safety factor for structural integrity check (as per GS EP STR 101):
- Operational boat Impact : Allowable Stress 1.33, Minimum Pile Safety Factor 1.50
- Accidental boat Impact : Allowable Stress 1.70, Minimum Pile Safety Factor 1.25

2.0 DESIGN PARAMETER

2.1. Model
As per design concept of the OFD5 Platfrom, boat approach will be from platform north side. Jacket Leg A1 & B1 is most potencial leg for boat impact.
However, there is possibility collision occurred at another leg. As per Inplace Analysis, leg/pile A2 and A1 are most loaded. Pile A2 most critical for compression,
hence to simulated worst case condition, impact load on jacket Leg A1 from the Platform North side (compress to A2) has been selected for Boat Impact Study.
Impact load at another leg are less worst.

3.2

By Global Displacement of Structure

Several incremental load is applied to the structure, displacement occur on the structure (joint of applied load) due to this load is observed.
The absorbed energy by global deflection can be calculated from the force vs displacement curve.
Forces and displacement are taken from SACS analysis.

5.0 CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

1. Ultimate Platform capacity to absorb Energy from the boat impact without pile collaps is 278 kJ, at this condition:
Load Step
:
9
Ultimate Platform Capacity
:
278
kN-m
(kN-m = KJ)
Leg UC (at boat inpact)
:
0.45
OK
Pile UC
:
0.97
OK
Pile Safety Factor
:
1.57
> 1.250, OK
2. Actual boat Impact Energy (Operational Conditions) is 350 kJ (Maximum), at this conditions (step 9~10, considered step 10):
Load Step
:
10
Leg UC (at boat inpact)
:
0.48
OK
Pile UC
:
1.04
UC Marginal, hence OK
However, boat fender shall be provided to reduce energy transferred to the piles/global
structure
Pile Safety Factor
:
1.52
> 1.50, OK
3. Actual boat Impact Energy (Accidental Conditions) is 896 kJ (Maximum), at this conditions (step 14~15, considered step 15):
Load Step
:
15
Leg UC (at boat inpact)
:
0.56
OK
Pile UC
:
1.02
UC Marginal, hence OK
However, boat fender shall be provided to reduce energy transferred to the piles/global
structure
Pile Safety Factor
:
1.33
>= 1.25, OK
4. Comparison point 1 with point 2 &3, It is recommended to install boat fender at the Jacket Leg whereas boat collision potentially would occured.
For the OFD5 Platform, supply vessel approach is from North side, therefore Leg A1 & B1 to be protected by Fender.
Minimum capacity of the fender to absorb energy is [Actual Boat Impact energy] - [Ultimate Platform Capacity to Absorb Energy]:
Requirement for Normal Impact:
Boat Fender Capacity
=
350
278
kN-m
=
72
kN-m
(as minimum)
=
7
Tonnes-m
Requirement for Accidental Impact:
Hence 21 tonnes-m selected
Boat Fender Capacity
=
896
690
kN-m
=
206
kN-m
(as minimum)
=
21
Tonnes-m
or, when all energy to be completely absorbed by fender only:
Boat Fender Capacity
=
Energy of Boat Impact
=
896
kN-m
=
91
Tonnes-m
