CHAPTER III

METHODOLOGY

A. Study Design

This research study shall utilize Descriptive-Correlation method which

will allow the researchers to correlate the level of self-esteem and the clinical
performance of selected sophomore nursing students.

B. Study Population

The population of the study will be the second year nursing students who
had their related learning experiences in clinical areas.

C. Sampling Procedure
The sampling that will be used in the study will be the total enumeration
sampling. It is a process of getting a sample that is available for the study.

The sampling will be executed by obtaining the respondents who will be

the sophomore student nurses who had their related learning experience in clinical
areas. The schedules and the list of sophomore student nurses shall be requested from
the respective secretary of the college of nursing. The whole population of the
sophomore student shall be the respondents for the study. The Rosenberg Self-Esteem
Scale that measures the level of self-esteem an individual will be prepared and will be
given out to the respondents. Data will be analysed and interpreted. Evaluation shall
be done upon completion.

D. Inclusion and Exclusion Criteria

The respondent must be:

A second year nursing student of the Western Mindanao State University

Had been assigned and exposed to their first RLE clinical area.

A sophomore shall be excluded if:

Is an irregular student

E. Research Locale

The study will be conducted at the Western Mindanao State University,

College of Nursing.

F. Data Gathering Procedure

The instrument that will be utilized in the study shall be the Rosenberg
Self-Esteem Scale. It is a 10 item scale questionnaire that measures an individuals
global self-worth by measuring both positive and negative feelings about
ones self. Items 2, 5, 6, 8, 9 are reverse scored. The results will be rated by a scale of
1 to 4 as described as Strongly Disagree 1 point, Disagree 2 points, Agree 3
points, and Strongly Agree 4 points. Items 2, 5, 6, 8, 9 are reverse scored. Higher
scores indicate higher self-esteem. A total of 24 points and below indicates a low selfesteem while a total of 25 points and above indicates a high self- esteem.

The RLE ratings of each respondent shall be requested from their

respective level coordinator. The standard university scale of RLE rating is as
follows :

1.0 1.25 Excellent

1.5 1.75 Very Good

2.0 2.25 Good

2.5 2.75 Fair

3.0 Passing

5.0 - Failure

G. Statistical Analysis of the Data

After the administration of the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale and the

acquisition of the RLE ratings of each student, data collected shall be tabulated,
analyzed and interpreted.

The researchers shall determine the correlation between the student

nurses level of self- esteem and clinical performance by utilizing the Pearson
Product-Moment Correlation. To achieve this property, Pearson's correlation is
computed by identifying the deviation scores (x and y), dividing the sum of the xy

column (xy) by the square root of the product of the sum of the x2 column (x2) and
the sum of the y2 column (y2). The resulting formula is:

To determine the relationship of the level of self esteem and clinical

performance of student nurses, self esteem was labelled as 1, low self-esteem and 2,
high self-esteem. On the other hand, the RLE ratings as will be indicated as 1
Failure to Good and 2 as Very Good to Excellent.

H. Plans for Data Processing and Analysis

The method of gathering will be the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale

through quota sampling. The schedules and list of nursing students who will part of
the study shall be requested from our respective college of nursing secretary. The
RLE ratings of the respondents shall be respectfully requested from their respective
level coordinator. This shall serve as a baseline data for the study. To analyze the
gathered data, the Pearson Product-Moment Correlation formula will be utilized.

I. Ethical Considerations

Consents shall be given out to the respondents during the conduct of the
study wherein confidentiality of the information gathered shall be stressed out. The

principles of respect for people, beneficence and justice shall be observed.
