2. Explain the life cycle of the plant.

The life cycle of the plant start with a tiny little seed. The seed needs food,
water and sunlight to grow into a plant. Later, the wind blows and tiny little
seeds fall to the ground. After the seeds fall to the ground, the life cycle of the
plant starts all over again.
3. Define the following:
a) Photosynthesis : The process of making food in a green leaf in presence of
sunlight is called photosynthesis.
b) Root hairs : In a plant, the terminal branches upon the roots bear many fine
hairs called root hairs.
c) Leaf blade : A green, flat and brad part of the leaf is called leaf blade.
d) Axil of the leaf : The angle between the petiole and the stem towards
terminal bud is called axil of the leaf.
e) Bud : A young shoot which grows and give rise to new leaves and flowers

Answers
1. How do water plants protect themselves from decay under water?
In all water plants, the plant body is covered with a gum or jelly like substance called
mucilage. This mucilage protects the plant body from decay under water.
2. How do desert plants reduce loss of water from their body?
In desert plants, the stem and leaves are modified into fleshy, scale and spiny
structures to reduce the loss of water from the surface of the plant body.
3. Give any three adaptations of plants life in desert.
a) The stem becomes flat and green to take up the function of leaves.
b) The stem or the leaves are covered with spines, scales or thick cuticle to reduce
transpiration.
c) The roots grow deep into the soil to take in sub-soil water.
d) The plants are woody or succulent.
4. Give a note on arboreal plants with examples.
a) The arboreal plants are known for their beautiful spikes of flowers.
b) They grow on branches of trees where the climate is warm and humid.
c) They possess two kinds of roots namely clinging roots and hanging roots.
d) The clinging roots attach the plant to the branches of the trees.
e) The hanging roots remain in air to absorb moisture from the air.
f) Examples Mosses and Lichens.
5. Why the plants are dry in hilly regions, though they get enough rainfall?

3|Page

The hill plants get heavy rain but water does not remain near their roots, because of
the slope. So the rain water flows into rivers and stream leaving behind the dry
conditions.
6. Give a note on trees in hilly regions with examples.
a) Plants growing in hills are very different from those growing in plains.
b) Most hills are covered with forests where lofty tree with needle-like leaves called
conifers are common.
c) They bear cones instead of flowers.
d) Their stem has resin ducts containing resin from which turpentine and vanish
are obtained.
e) Examples oak, walnut, pine, fir, eucalyptus, tea, coffee etc.
7. Try yourself
8. Try yourself
9. Give a short note on flower.
a) Each flower has four parts namely sepals, petals, stamens and pistil.
b) Stamen and pistil are the reproductive organs of a flower.
c) Flowers help in reproduction.
d) Sepals are green leafy structures.
e) Petals are coloured, soft, smooth and may be fragment.
f) Each stamen is a slender stalk having a bag like anther at its free end.
g) Anther is full of powdery pollens.
h) Pistil is flask shaped having seeds inside.

10. What are the functions of veins in a leaf blade?

Leaf blade has a network of veins in it which help the leaf to receive water from the
root through the stem. Veins also help the flow of food made in the leaf to the storage
organs.
11. What is the function of stomata present on green leaves?
The pores found on the lower surface of the leaf are called stomata. During daytime
the leaves take in carbon dioxide and give out oxygen and water vapour through
these stomata.
12. Explain the process of photosynthesis.
a) The process of making food in a green leaf in presence of sunlight is called
photosynthesis.
b) The green substance in the leaves called the chlorophyll absorbs solar energy
from sunlight and makes it available for combination with water and carbon
dioxide for making food.
c) This result in the formation of glucose which immediately changes into starch.
d) In this process, oxygen is given out.

83

Answer
Name the Following.
1. Greenhouse effect

3. Fossil fuels

5. Oxygen and nitrous oxide

2. CFC

4. Leather belts

6. Plastic and polythene bags

Answer the Following.

1. Explain the changes in temperature with altitude of Earths atmosphere.
As you move upward from the surface of Earth, the temperature cools for several kilometers
before it reverse and begins to increase (in the stratosphere). This increase ultimately reverses
into another decline in temperature, which in turn changes into an increase in temperature at
high altitude. The net effect is that the temperature oscillates back and forth over a fairly
narrow range of values.
2. Why there is so little carbon dioxide and more oxygen in our atmosphere?
Even though carbon dioxide is the most abundant gas released in volcanic processes, it is not
the most abundant gas in our atmosphere because it slowly dissolves in the liquid water on
Earth and ultimately forms carbonate rocks. The existence of free oxygen in our atmosphere
is purely a result of biological activity, specifically photosynthesis.
3. Give the characteristics of four layers of Earths atmosphere.
From the surface upward, the layers in Earths atmosphere are: troposphere (distinguished by
the water cycle, which controls our weather); stratosphere (distinguished by the ozone layer);
mesosphere (the top of the greenhouse where CO2 radiates energy to space); and
thermosphere (so thin it is easily heated by sunlight).
4. What controls the temperature of Earths atmosphere?
The temperature of any object is determined by the balance of input energy and emitted
energy. The temperature of the object rises or falls until the object is able to radiate as much
energy as it receives.
5. What are the major constituents of Earths atmosphere?
Our atmosphere is composed primarily of nitrogen (78%) and oxygen (22%).
