a) Transpiration : The water is lost in the form of water vapour from the general
surface of a plant body. This loss of water vapour from a plant body is called
transpiration.
b) Stomata : A leaf bears a number of very small pores on its lower surface. These
pores are called stomata.
c) Pollination : The process of transfer of pollens from the anther to the stigma of a
plant is called pollination.
d) Vegetative propagation : The method of reproduction in which new plants are
formed from the vegetative parts such as leaf, stem or root without involving the
reproductive organs is called vegetative propagation.
e) Habitat : The surroundings in which a plant or an animal lives is called its
environment or habitat.
f) Hydrophytes : The plants that grow only in or on water (aquatic plants) are
called hydrophytes.
g) Terrestrial plants : The plants that live on land are called terrestrial plants.
h) Deciduous trees : The trees which shed their leaves during autumn are called
deciduous trees.
i) Mucilage : In floating hydrophytes, the plant body is covered with a gum or jelly

1. How do water plants protect themselves from decay under water?
In all water plants, the plant body is covered with a gum or jelly like substance called
mucilage. This mucilage protects the plant body from decay under water.
2. How do desert plants reduce loss of water from their body?
In desert plants, the stem and leaves are modified into fleshy, scale and spiny
structures to reduce the loss of water from the surface of the plant body.
3. Give any three adaptations of plants life in desert.
a) The stem becomes flat and green to take up the function of leaves.
b) The stem or the leaves are covered with spines, scales or thick cuticle to reduce
transpiration.
c) The roots grow deep into the soil to take in sub-soil water.
d) The plants are woody or succulent.
4. Give a note on arboreal plants with examples.
a) The arboreal plants are known for their beautiful spikes of flowers.
b) They grow on branches of trees where the climate is warm and humid.
c) They possess two kinds of roots namely clinging roots and hanging roots.
d) The clinging roots attach the plant to the branches of the trees.
e) The hanging roots remain in air to absorb moisture from the air.
f) Examples Mosses and Lichens.
5. Why the plants are dry in hilly regions, though they get enough rainfall?
3|Page
The hill plants get heavy rain but water does not remain near their roots, because of
the slope. So the rain water flows into rivers and stream leaving behind the dry
conditions.
6. Give a note on trees in hilly regions with examples.
a) Plants growing in hills are very different from those growing in plains.

wood and animal bodies in river bed or areas affected by floods and storm.
Sediments deposited in layers harden and form rock under pressure and heat from
the earth.
2. How petroleum is formed?
Petroleum was formed due to decomposition of dead bodies of land and sea animals
which got buried under the soil many years ago.
3. What are fossils?
Fossils are the dead remains of plants and animals that change into rock material.

Wind-fans are used for producing electricity.
6. Why should we not cover our face while sleeping?
To breathe in fresh air, we should not cover face while sleeping.
7. Explain water cycle.
On high hills, clouds cool to form ice, which comes down as snow. High mountain
peaks are covered with snow. This snow melts all the year round and water flows
into rivers. The rivers flow into the sea. Water on land and in the sea evaporates to
form clouds. This cycle goes on and on. This is called water cycle.
8. What is the use of a weather-vane?
A weather-vane helps to learn about the direction of the wind.
9. Why do ponds and wells dry during summer?
Since the water from ponds and wells evaporate all the time and goes into the air
due to heat, ponds and wells dry during summer.
10. How would you show that air has water vapour in it?
Keep some ice in a glass. Wipe the glass dry from outside. After sometime, outside
the glass becomes foggy and some water drops start trickling down the glass. This
water drops shows that air around us have water vapour which on cooling changes
into water drops.

Answers
1. Name the different gases present in the air.
Common gases present in the air are oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, water vapour
and some other gases.
2. How does green plant help in keeping the air clean?
Green plants take in carbon dioxide from the atmosphere during daytime. They use
it in the process photosynthesis to make food and gives out oxygen into the air. This
way plants make the air fresh.
3. We do not feel the pressure of air in the atmosphere which is very high. Why?
Air pressure is used in moving liquids in our everyday life. Liquids under higher air
pressure move to the place under lower air pressure.
4. What makes the air foul?
Air with bad smell is a polluted air. Bad smell may be due to harmful and bad
smelling gases from sewage, decaying food, dead animal bodies and chemical
factories or from burning materials like plastics. Dust also makes the air foul.
5. How do we prevent the air being polluted?
a) Pollution causing industries should be located away from the living places.
b) Dead animals should be got buried.
c) Drains should be cleaned from time to time.
d) Wastes from homes, sewage and animal waste from diaries should be dumped
into pits.
e) Automobiles should be used sparingly.
