Construction management

4/18/2010
WHY CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT IS A GOOD FIELD.
Are you a person that likes to work outside, direct people, coordinate projects, and would

like to manage a business? A construction manager over sees how things go on a job site, and

makes sure that things get done in time for the due date. They set up times for other companies to

come out and wire up a building or run the plumbing in the building. Construction managers also

known as job supervisors make sure that whatever it is that they may be building is built to code

and that it is done right and efficiently.

Reasons to go to school for construction management

Being a job supervisor you have people that you manage, and with being a laborer you

are at the bottom of the totem pole and you have to work very hard for the money you make. The

average hourly wage for construction management is 43.16 an hour

(http://www.bls.gov/oes/current/oes119021.htm). With being a construction worker you’re going

to have to work harder with a lot less pay than being a laborer you would be looking at 15.51

(http://www.bls.gov/oes/current/oes119021.htm). There is quite a bit of difference between the

two of them and a lot less labor intense work with management.

There is a high employment rate for construction management. Non residential has the

highest rate of employment for this career. Employment is around 53,000 according to the

Bureau of Labor Statics. The next highest employed area for this degree is residential they are

around 41,000. The reason this is such a good field to go into is because various people and

businesses will always be in need of new buildings to be built, or new housing developments to

be constructed. If they don’t need anything built they would need someone to demolish an old

site, or, remodel an older building to modernize it. The construction field will always be a

booming industry with lots of jobs and opportunities.

Required skills

Some skills you will need to have and know how to utilize within this job is to be able to

manage a whole work site and make sure that everything gets built properly and the way the

customers want it to be built. You must be able to set up times for companies to come in, such as

having someone to come in to poor the walls, and then someone to come in to poor the floors.

The manager has to be on top of things with scheduling different companies to come in and do

the various jobs throughout the building process in the new building or home. If scheduling

doesn’t happen and there are days without work because of this it will cost the company lots of

money in the long run, and for whatever it is that may be being built to not be finished on time.

Advancement
Advancements can come in many different ways in this business. Some managers are

given a lot bigger projects to look over which in turn means more money coming into your

pocket. Some people look at advancements as starting their own company after they get some

experience throughout the industry and have a good feel on how to run things. The benefits of

owning your own company come with making more money and getting your company’s name

out into the business world. Instead of an hourly wage or a salary you get all the profit after

paying employees and supplies. There are positives and negatives with owning a company. The

positives being you get more money, and can pick your schedule. Negatives are you have to fix

your equipment and if something breaks the owner has to replace it.
