Dear friends:

All of our family say 'A thousand thanks to all of you for standing by us with
your gifts and prayers'. In the past six months we have been privileged to visit practic
ally all our living-link churches and have spoken about 80 times. Because of my school
ing last semester, special meetings were postponed till spring. We will be into six
straight weeks of meetings by the time this letter reaches you.

MISS FUKUMOTO

WE CONTINUALLY RECEIVE ENCOURAGING WORD FROM OUR

FRIENDS IN JAPAN. MISS FUKUMOTO, A PATIENT AT THE T. B. SANI-

TORIUM HAS COMPLETED THE 43 LESSON RADIO CORRESPONDENCE

LADY AND WE ARE HAPPY THAT HER HEALTH IS IMPROVING.

PREACHERS ARE WRITING THE LESSONS. THE OUTLINE IS AS FOLLOWS:

MR. IIMURE AT KAGOSHIMA CONTINUES WITH ONE ENGLISH

BIBLE CLASS FOR COLLEGE STUDENTS AND AT KAJIKI, MR. DAIKUZONO

CONTINUES TO HOLD DOWN A JUNIOR HIGH CLASS, (sec picture) TAPES
WE SEND ARE HELPFUL TO THEM.

Both Mark and Paul have passed the 5' 10" mark. Paul played freshman foot

ball and Mark was the center on his 7th grade basketball team. Lydia finally reached
the honor roll by mid-year and Mary won a music-memory contest. This year will prove
a good experience for each of them.

We arrived home in good time for Mom and Dad Pratt's Golden Wedding An
niversary, October 6th. It was the first time their family of seven children were all to

gether in 15 years. In this day of family troubles and divorce, marriages of greater

longevity must be held up before us as that which the Lord planned for man. May you
have many more, mom and dad.

Our sincere sympathy to the Mark Maxey family our co-laborers. Mrs. Maxey's

SUNDAY SCHOOL

father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Pethtel of W^ind Ridge, Penna., both passed away
within the last three months. "...sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.
for ... the dead in Christ shall rise..."

Folk continually ask "When are you going back?" We plan to move westward

in late July with an appointment to sail about the 15th of August along With the Mark
Maxey family. We need your help in purcha^ng clothing, a stove, beds and other items
as well as the tickets.

Needs for our family will be greater this time since the children are older. The

cost of^ the correspondence school courses increases with the years. Paul will enter a pri
vate high school in Tokyo this year, Mark will enter in 1964 and then Lydia will begin
in 1965. These expenses are terrific. We plan to resume radio broadcasting and as
funds permit we hope to advertise our courses on TV. and thru the newspapers. We
plan in the future to move out of the rented house and convert it into a Christian Dorm

itory, rental library and book store. Join with us in making each of these items a matter
of prayer.

Dear friends,

Kathleen declares that the missionary's theme song is "This

World Is Not My Home". Of the past eight years, the year 1961 holds
the honor of being the only year in which we did not move. We're

Mr. Virgil Brock

made to feel very much without a home since we received word that
our rented house in Kagoshima is up for sale. Of course we wouldn't
even consider letting go our lease on that "Mansion Over The Hill

top" but until we move to that land, please pray that the Lord will
provide us with one in Kagoshima. He is faithful to provide.
It won't be long now.

Word from the travel agency is that we

will sail aboard the CALIFORNIA BEAR of the Pacific Par East Lines

on August 14th. (Some missionaries do not encourage us as to the

faithfulness of freighters meeting their sailing date.) We looh
foreward to the restful voyage and the reunion with the Mark Mazey
family oxir only fellowpassengers. We still need funds toward the
purchase of tickets. With Lydia reaching her twelfth birthday this

July 27th, all except Ma:^ will.be paying full fare.

We have appreciated the sincere welcome, the entertainment and
gifts given to us by all of you. The marked evangelistic zeal and
concern for missions in general in so many churches truly enooiurage
ua. 0\ir family owes a great deal to our Indianapolis friends and

Sameshlma San

Baptized in September

especially to the Mars ^11 Church for opening its arms to us and
for ministering to our young people.

This all helped them to live

for a few months like normal boys and girls.

Six weeks of evangelism with Northway, Niles, Attica, Vander bilt and Beech' Grove challenged me and we trust proved helpful for
all, A total of ten souls responded to the invitation. Seven were
baptized and the others placed membership with the respective local
churches. The final two weeks were spent at Beech Grove, near Port
Wayne, with our friend Don Foust. We were honored, too, to be work

ing with Mr. Virgil Brook, author of many well-known gospel songs,
the most popular of which is "Beyond The Sunset". He so graciously
surrendered his total income from the meeting to this missionary for
which we are truly grateful.

Someone has been praying, for God is answering. For three and
one-half years after we entered Japan three missionaries came home
and none were recruited to go.

In 1962 Lonnie Mings and his wife

Coral came, followed by Dounie his brother and Charlotte, his wife.
As of April this year, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Fish (formerly of Okinawa)
have Joined the workers on the field. In addition to these, both
Mr. Maxey and I have been in conversation with four fine young cou
ples from Great Lakes Bible College who have Japan in their plans.
Among these are Harold Hicks, his wife the formerly Beverly Hostetler and Jim Longley, all former acquaintances in Michiana. Do pray

Nakamura San

for their future planning.

Folks everywhere are asking "Are the communists making headway

in Japan?"

We usually ea^ilain our concern for their growing 'grip'

on labor and teachers unions and student groups. But we are like
wise alarmed about their subtle Inroads into oiir American way of
life. Our family was reminded of the great ideals of freedom which
form the foundation of our co\mtry when we visited Washington D.C.

in early June.

Our blood ran warm as each memorial reminded us of

the clear vision possessed by those founding fathers. We also ut

tered a prayer that all men everywhere, including the slaves of

atheism mi^t "know the truth" that makes men free.

This letter is not complete without a sincere note of appreci
ation to the fine Christian couple who have served the Lord and us

so faithfully as o\ir frewarding agents.
