This course provides graduates with an understanding of the complex relationship between economic
decision making and environmental impacts. Graduates develop the ability to identify and recommend
solutions for effective sustainable management.
This course is for scientists and engineers concerned with cross-disciplinary issues of environmental
protection and addressing the needs of modern urban societies. Graduates are equipped with the
multidisciplinary skills necessary to assess and manage the effects of natural and human activities in
rural and built environments.
This course addresses the increasing challenges of agricultural land degradation as well as
those associated with restoring post-mining landscapes, brownfield sites, major civil engineering
developments and greenfield sites to amenity, natural habitat or agricultural end-use. It will provide
you with the knowledge and skills to enable you to design and implement appropriate, innovative and

Industry connections
Academic staff
Cranfield has strong links with industry. Through these connections we contribute to global innovation, we
generate and transform knowledge, and use this knowledge to benefit society.
You will be taught by a wide range of subject specialists at Cranfield University and from outside the
University, who draw on their research and industrial expertise to provide stimulating and relevant input
to your learning experience. Two key members of the team are shown below:
Our students benefit from our extensive contacts and reputation for informing government and the
environmental sector. Our courses are reviewed each year by a panel of industry advisors from across all
sectors encompassed by our courses. In addition, many of our courses are accredited by professional
institutions to give you peace-of-mind and the recognition that you are industry-ready.
Cranfields Group Projects give MSc students the opportunity to develop practical skills and take
responsibility for a consultancy-type project with industry whilst working under academic supervision.
Some recent projects include:
Polytunnel detection for levy enforcement using satellite remote sending with AHDB Horticulture.
Estimation of carbon sequestration in reed beds in mine water treatment schemes for the Coal
Authority.
Working with the Environment Agency on sediment in natural flood risk management.
Modelling flood risk on the Network Rail infrastructure.
Adding value to Ordnance Survey maps.
Optimising the conversion of waste into bioenergy for VMP Waste Processing Limited.
I feel that the courses focus on policy (enhanced by two field trips
to Westminster) prepared me for the challenges of implementing
environmental policies which I now see on a day-to-day basis.
The taught modules were very beneficial in terms of diversifying
my knowledge of the environmental field. I found the lecturers very
informative and supportive.
