The King is here

By REPEKA NASIKO

LOBAL franchise Burger King was introduced to locals two weeks ago by more
than 100 relatively unknown children
but there was nothing discrete about the
opening of this classic $6.5m building, or the
size and taste of the burgers served on the
day.
The buzz created by the opening on February 17, the dynamic feel of the homely setup,
the eye-popping size of ame grilled burgers, and the scrumptious taste of the world
famous Whoppers, caused a frenzy when the
restaurant opened its doors to the public the
next morning.
The King had surely arrived and hordes of

people had lined up to savour the towns newest avour. Operated by a Motibhai Group
subsidiary, Victus Ltd, the Martintar branch
was the rst outlet introduced into the local
market. Motibhai Group and Burger King Fiji
chairman Kirit Patel said the occasion would
register as a milestone achievement in the
companys history books.
He said choosing Nadi to be the home of the
rst Burger King in the country was also a signicant move by the company.
The opening of the Burger King is a hallmark of events to come, as we believe that in
2017, Nadi will become the third city of our beloved country, he said.
The Nadi township is continuing to experience a population growth and we are deter-

mined and committed to contribute to our

community by extending our services.
The Jet Set town, Nadi, plays a huge role in
the Fijian economy and is the hub of tourism
so it is very appropriate that one of the worlds
fastest growing quick service restaurant
chain, like Burger King, is opened to serve the
tourists and locals with world famous Whoppers.
He said Burger King had the unique ability to
bring together members of different communities who shared a love for the world famous
hamburgers only offered by the franchise.
Apart from the unique tasting experience,
this Burger King outlet will become more than
just a place to grab a quick bite as it will be an
important place where people will be able to

meet and interact with one another in a friendly environment.

This will become an important gathering
place for the community.
The play area for children and the dining
area will create a family environment where
our people can eat and the children can play.
The opening day was made extra special by
the presence of the 150 children with special
needs from the greater Nadi area.
Students of the Nadi Centre for Special Education and residents of Saint Mina Childrens
Home, Treasure House Christian Childrens
Home and Loloma Home and Care Centre
were chief guests who enjoyed the day with
hearty meals, alongside Motibhai Group management and staff.

URGER King Fiji will be a point of difference, says

general manager Akash Narsey.
He said the opening of the Burger King restaurant
was the beginning of exciting times ahead, not only for the
Motibhai Group but also for the country.
Founded in 1954, Burger King is the second largest fast
food hamburger chain in the world, he said.
The original Home of the Whopper, the Burger King
system operates in nearly 14,000 locations in 100 countries worldwide, serving 2.3billion customers per year.
In recent years, Burger King has been the fastest growing burger chain in the world, offering consistent fast service, fresh ingredients, top notch quality and best tasting
products to its customers.
The opening of an international brand and that too
Burger King - a highly reputable Quick Service Restaurant
chain, means there are exciting times ahead not only for
Motibhai Group but for Fiji as well.
He said customers could expect a whole new fast food
experience now that Burger King was in operation.
This will allow us to give value and do more than expected for our guests.
Burger King will be a point of difference to its guests in
terms of quality, value and service.
We are constantly looking for better ways to delight
our people and Burger King will provide value to its guests
which is in line with todays modern business strategies.
The general manager added that the journey to securing
franchise deal was long yet satisfying.
Acquiring a Burger King Master Franchise, as with any
franchise was not an easy task but a rather strenuous one.
We had to go through an extensive International screening process for our Motibhai Group to be nally chosen by
Burger King Asia Pacic to represent them in Fiji.
Mr Narsey also said preparations before the opening of
the $6.5million outlet was extensive.
Prior to opening, we were doing trial runs for almost
two weeks so that our staff is well trained to give best
guest service to the people of Fiji.
The higher quality guest service we provide will result
in higher level of guest satisfaction and that will translate
into repeat of business and continuous growth of our Burg- Nadi Centre for Special Education head teacher Shiromani Felix, left, Motibhai Group and Burger King chairman Kirit

Here to stay

We are here
to stay
By REPEKA NASIKO

URGER King is here to stay and if you havent heard of

this fast-food chain, you will soon.
Local conglomerate Motibhai Group has announced
plans to open seven more outlets across the country.
After rst announcing their Master Franchise Agreement
with Burger King Asia Pacic last year, the company has established two restaurants one at the Nadi International
Airport and the second in Martintar, Nadi.
Burger King Fiji general manager Akash Narsey said they
were in negotiations to open a few more branches in Suva
over the next few months.
Burger King is in negotiations to open three Burger King
outlets in the Capital City at strategic locations, with its second airport outlet in the farewells hall at the Nadi International Airport, scheduled to open later this year, which will
be followed by other towns in Fiji, he said.
When I refer to continuous growth, we target within the
next few years to be looking at between seven to 10 Burger
King outlets in Fiji. Our immediate plan, however, is to open
three Burger King Restaurants before the end of 2016 in the
Suva and Nadi areas.
Motibhai Group and Burger King chairman Kirit Patel said
acquiring the agreement from one of the worlds leading
hamburger franchise was a strenuous but fruitful exercise.
Weve had quite a good experience in the restaurant
business in the form of our cafes at the Nadi International
Airport, he said.
So that gave us a platform or good grounding and experience to venture into something that we could associate
ourselves with an international brand.
Obviously with McDonalds in Fiji, we felt that being involved in a brand such as Burger King, which is the fastest
growing restaurant chain in the world, was something that
we wanted to be part of.
Burger King executives from the Asia Pacic ofce came
over and had a look at the market.
They looked at a number of organisations and we had
also expressed our interest.
We ended up being chosen and as a result we now have
Burger King in Fiji.
He said the company had an ambitious business plan to
turn Burger King into the countrys largest fast food chain.
The standards and the requirements to run a business
such as Burger King are very demanding.
We have been very interested in setting up the franchise
here in the domestic market.
We even involved overseas experts in the whole set up of
each branch and we did that because we want to always set
a good standard benchmark and ensure that we deliver the
Burger King promise and that is, Taste is King.

A reason
to smile
By REPEKA NASIKO

HERE is nothing more satisfying

than seeing a happy and smiling
child.
And the directors of the Motibhai
Group were rewarded with more than a
smile when the happy faces of about 150
children lit up Burger Kings Martintar,
Nadi, outlet during its opening on February 17.
Knowing they were in for a treat after
all the special treatment, the children
were excited at the prospects of being
among the rst locals to sink their teeth
into Burger Kings world famous ame
grilled burgers.
The group included students of the
Nadi Centre for Special Education, and
orphans from Saint Mina Childrens
Home, Treasure House Christian Childrens Home and Loloma Home and Care
Centre.
In a never before seen gesture, they
were given the honour of opening the
$6.5million facility.
Apart from sharing a meal with Motibhai Group management and staff,
the four organisations were each given
$2501 as nancial assistance from the
company.
Motibhai Group and Burger King chairman Kirit Patel said it was important
for the company to involve the underprivileged community of Nadi, especially
children who needed a reason to smile.
We are very humbled and touched
with your very kind presence to witness
and ofciate the opening of our Global
Franchise Burger King, the rst outlet in

the local market at Martintar, Nadi, he

said.
I am sure you all would be very happy
to be part of the Burger King opening
which instils a sense of belonging and of
being part of the wider community.
Motibhai Group, being part of the
business community, always believes in
making a difference in peoples lives.
He said children were the future of
any community and it was important to
show them the importance of giving and
taking care of the vulnerable members
of society.
We know that our people and children
with special needs inspire a special love.
It is important that children be given
a sense of inclusion.
This applies especially to those
among us living with restricted capabilities and not having an opportunity to
be with ones family and the daily challenges you face that the rest of us can
only imagine.
Similar sentiments were shared by
Burger King Fiji general manager Akash
Narsey during the opening.
He said the excitement surrounding
the opening of the outlet was further enhanced by the children.
Although our brand is global, it is also
vital that we include the local community in events such as these to ensure that
we continue building closer bonds with
our neighbours, he said. This applies
especially to those among us living with
restricted capabilities and not having an
opportunity to be with ones family and
the daily challenges you face that the
rest of us can only imagine.

Special children treated to

world-class burgers
By REPEKA NASIKO

PECIAL needs children and orphans

were treated to some of the worlds
best burgers on offer at the new Burger King outlet in Martintar, Nadi, on February
17.
Taking a break from their everyday routine, children as young as three-years-old
were treated like royalty for a day and were
pampered by attentive Burger King staff.
The day was rounded off with a gift of
$2501 to each of the four organisations invited the Nadi Centre for Special Education, Saint Mina Childrens Home, Treasure
House Christian Childrens Home and Loloma Home and Care Centre.
Saint Minas Childrens Home manager Michael Fong said the grand gesture by the administrators of Motibhai Group and Burger
King would not go unnoticed, especially by
the children.
He said bringing a sense of normalcy and
inclusion to the children was also important
to their development.
It is very important for the kids to have a
normal life.

Its good that society partakes and actually gives these kids who are kids of Fiji a
normal life.
Whole families come to Burger King and
have their meals here, and so for our kids to
also come out and be part of the opening, it
kind of represents them also being part of
that family meal.
Loloma Homes Vaciseva Waqa said seeing the childrens smiling faces brought a
renewed sense of duty.
We are so blessed and privileged to be
invited to the opening of this Burger King
restaurant, she said.
We thank Mr (Kirit) Patel and his wonderful team for thinking of us.
We thank them for inviting us out from
our usual environment and getting the kids
to this wonderful and beautiful restaurant.
We are also truly grateful to the company
for donating $2501 to our home.
Nadi Centre for Special Education head
teacher Shiromani Felix said their students
had a wonderful experience.
Our partners all over the world has been
responding and thanking the Motibhai Group
and Burger King for such a great gesture of

charity, inclusiveness and compassion, he
said.
Treasure House deputy director Maika Nakora said they were grateful to be part of the
grand opening.

We wish to thank the Motibhai Group and

all of their staff for the nancial support and

Businesses welcome
new eatery

Picture: BALJEET SINGH

By REPEKA NASIKO

HE business community of Nadi has

joined other sectors in welcoming the
opening of a new Burger King outlet in
Martintar.
Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industry
president, Dr Ram Raju, said the rst domestic Burger King outlet added another attraction to the Jet Set Town for residents and
visitors alike.
Being an international renowned brand
name, notably the fastest growing quick service restaurant in the world, Burger King has
a lot to offer to the Fijian economy, he said.
The $6.5 million outlet has obviously
brightened the outlook of our Queens Highway and NCCI urges all its members and
stakeholders to take full advantage of the
mouth-watering menu of Burger King.
He said the new franchise business also
came at an opportune time as Nadi would
soon be declared the countrys third city.
As we move on to be declared a city next
year, Nadi is denitely ready to take the lead
role as we are undoubtedly the engine room
of the Fijian economy.
We remain the fastest growing township
in the entire South Pacic and denitely
there seems to be no looking back for now
and for the future.
He said the industry was looking forward
to the growth of the franchise within the local market.
I wish to congratulate Motibhai Group on
yet another milestone achievement for their
company and the condence in the Fijian
economy which has seen millions of dollars
worth of investment come our way.
I look forward to the expansion of Burger
King around the country with great interest.

85 years of charity work in Fiji

By REPEKA NASIKO

HE Motibhai Group has a long history of

charity work that spans over a period
of about 85 years.
Company public relations and corporate
marketing manager Shalendra Prasad said
it was no surprise that the company chose
to invite students from the Nadi Centre for
Special Education and children from three
orphanages to launch their rst ever Burger
King outlet into the local market.
Generally over the years we have made
numerous donations in various elds, more
so when there was an important milestone
event in our company, he said.
He said their goodwill work reached many
sectors including education, health and providing relief to those affected by natural disasters.
Education
In the 50s we were one of the rst donors
towards the establishment of Xavier College
and later on also to AD Patel College. Both
schools have high academic reputation,
said Mr Prasad.

10 THE FIJI TIMES SATURDAY, MARCH 5, 2016

Our Group also played an active role in the

establishment of Tagore Memorial School.
In 1968 when we opened our supermarket in Ba, we sponsored a student from Ba
for full degree course at the University of the
South Pacic (USP) when Dr Colin Aickman
was Vice-Chancellor.
Our longstanding association with Dilkusha Girls Home has been in operation for the
past 20 years.
At the time of changeover of ownership of
The Fiji Times we made donations to Dilkusha Girls Home and also to the Fiji Crippled
Society Hilton School.
This latest donation to Nadi Centre for
Special Education (Special School) and the
three orphanage homes Treasure House
Christian Childrens Home, Loloma Home and
Care Centre and St. Mina Childrens Home is
in line with our companys commitment to
assist the less unfortunate and we are well
aware of our responsibility in society to meet
these obligations.
Most importantly the original founders
of Motibhai Group in the 50s built a fullyedged high school in their village in India in

the name of their father and this high school

is fully operational to this day.
We have from time to time awarded
scholarship to students in outlying islands.
Health
Mr Prasad said the company had a longstanding association with the Fiji Cancer Society.
This is evident through our iconic Bushells Fijis Biggest Morning Tea initiative
which has raised thousands of dollars to assist in the ght against cancer.
We continue to have an on-going association with FCS. Also our commitment to the
Fiji National Diabetes Foundation has been
from the inception days of the foundation.
And we were the initial contributors to
the founding of the centre and our former
chairman served as chair of the foundation
for 27 consecutive years with distinction.
Relief efforts
In recent times, the company has stepped
up to the call from Government to assist in
providing assistance to the worst affected in
the aftermath of a natural disaster.
Mr Prasad said the company had contrib-

uted to every cyclone relief effort organised

by Government and has enabled its international suppliers to contribute to the fundraiser.
The latest relief efforts from our Group
were the donation of $50,000 worth of
emergency food and household items to
the National Disaster Management Ofce
(NDMO) to assist our fellow Fijians who have
suffered great loss and damages during TC
Winston.
We have also contributed open heartedly to assist the Foundation for Rural and
Integrated Enterprises and Development
(FRIEND) who have been very active relief
agents on the ground during natural disasters, particularly in the greater Western Division.
As the company prepares to celebrate
another milestone this year, Mr Prasad said
they had been grounded on the philosophy
that By giving one does not become poor
but we are happy to sow in the same manner
as a bird takes a beak full of water from the
owing river, the river does not dry up but
rather keeps owing.

By KERESI NAUWAKARAWA
GOVERNMENT has labelled the alleged act by teachers in a North school
to bump up the mark of a student during internal exams a scam.
The Minister for Education, Heritage
and Arts, Dr Mahendra Reddy made
this comment during his chief guest
address at the Vunidawa Sanatan Primary School reunion celebration yesterday .
He was speaking in relation to an alleged suicide by a student in Labasa
early this week following the release of
the Year 13 results, where he had failed
to meet the passing mark.
The case in Labasa. He dropped out
in Form six to do sugarcane farming
and came back in Form 7 and teachers bumped up the marks and made the
student the dux.
I was there during the prize-giving
ceremony. And the student told the
journalist that I am scared that I will
not pass my external exams, I might
fail Form 7 exams; the student admitted, and when the actual standardised

student could not accept the mark, because someone there in the school system bumped up the mark and declared
the student the dux.
This is the kind of scam we have in
our school system that we need to eradicate ladies and gentlemen.
He added that they were yet to nd
out the actual cause of the incident.
Mr Reddy said initiatives would be
implemented to address the prevention
of incidents such as this.
The Government is xing this, the
Government is xing the system. At
the moment our focus is on the parents,
the difculty, the pain they are going
through. Once this is over, we want to
look at what really transpired and how
all this could have been avoided.
We are doing all we can to curb suicide in the country.
We are saddened by the loss of the
child, unfortunately he probably did
not share with too many people to identify the intention he had, who would
have helped him get out of that danger
which was unfortunate.

Real estate auctions are an

 Editorial on Page 6

prole

UCTIONS will soon be a regular

sale technique in Fijis real estate
industry. While some real estate
companies have sold off some
listings through auctioning, this sale
technique is somewhat relatively foreign in
Fiji.
Harcourts Fiji, one of the biggest real
estate companies in the country said they
auctioned off properties in the past and
those had all been successful.
I dont see any reason why it wouldnt
work if we tried again, Savinesh Mudiliar,
Harcourts Fiji senior sales consultant said.
In 2015 Harcourts conducted two auction
campaigns and both properties sold, one
prior to auction and the other sold on the
day under the hammer.
Most properties in New Zealand and
Australia are sold via auction. And, Mr
Mudiliar said Fiji was ready for this too.
It is very much like auctions that people
of Fiji have witnessed at charity functions
with vehicle auctions and so on, but a
property auction is more complicated
than that. There is a vigorous marketing
campaign associated.
Real Estate Agents Licensing Board
chairman Dr Abdul Hassan said real estate
auction was an intense and fast marketing
process. And, he adds, it has several
benets.
Selling real estate under auction is one
way of saving a large amount on any type of
real estate property, Dr Hassan said.
It may be undeveloped land or any
developed property. Real estate auctions
reduce the time of disposing property and
saves expenses on marketing. For many
potential buyers it creates a competitive
spirit of an auction and makes the process
intimidating.

This is one paradigm shift towards improving our public transport services and
it makes them much more accessible and

Instead of just procurements alone, I

of the country, the location of the
new Burger King in Martintar also
provides an easy access for the thousands
of tourists that ock to the town each year.
Tourism Fiji global public relations manager Patricia Mallam said there was a new
wave of familiar eateries now sweeping the
nation which could be an added attraction
for tourists to come to Fiji.
We have our tourists that come for the
unique Fijian experience but after a while
they want something that they are used to
and that is where large franchise chains like
Burger King come in, she said.
From a tourism perspective, this new
product really adds value to what we can offer to our international visitors.
She said after going around and exploring their tastebuds with local cuisines, tourists also on many times feel the need of
that familiarisation whereby they can identify themselves with an international brand
which they know well.
This is when outlets like Burger King have
much more to offer to our tourists and this is
the encouraging part about it.
Ms Mallam was accompanied by international PR agents from across the globe who
shared their views on the new multi-million
dollar facility.
Rosie Apps, an international PR agent
from Sydney, Australia, said she had fond
memories of Burger King as a child and being part of the ofcial opening brought back
wonderful memories.

which is that familiar feeling of home and
our childhood memories of going to Burger

Opportunity to expand business

BURGER KING OPENS IN MARTINTAR

Advertising Feature

By REPEKA NASIKO

OVERNMENT has played a major role

in ensuring the right environment is
created for businesses to encourage
growth and investments. This is a concept
that Motibhai Group chairman and CEO
Kirit Patel believes has also enabled their
company to expand its reach into sectors
such as the quick service restaurant market.
The annual budgets by Government
have been helpful towards the business
sector, he said.
But this isnt only to the business sector
but to the whole community and populace
as a whole.
And that gave us the opportunity to
venture into and make bold investments
like Burger King.
He said policies such as the Bainimarama
Governments investment policy and initiatives was one such catalyst for the Motibhai Group in franchising with Burger King.
Government policies and the incentives
with various other elements within various
government decisions have been conducive to the business sector.
We are thankful to the Government of
the day for providing this environment for
us.
He said the companys background in the
food sector also boosted their decision to
invest in the fast food service.
We had our caf pizzeria, a transit caf,
a caf international and also a domestic
caf at the Nadi International Airport. That
gave us a platform and a good grounding
and experience to venture into something
that we could associate us with an international brand.
Burger King executives came to Fiji a
few years ago and they had sourced out
a few organisations and we also submitted our interests and we ended up being
chosen. The company has so far invested
about $8.5million into establishing Burger
King outlets in Nadi.
