LOBAL franchise Burger King was introduced to locals two weeks ago by more
than 100 relatively unknown children
but there was nothing discrete about the
opening of this classic $6.5m building, or the
size and taste of the burgers served on the
day.
The buzz created by the opening on February 17, the dynamic feel of the homely setup,
the eye-popping size of ame grilled burgers, and the scrumptious taste of the world
famous Whoppers, caused a frenzy when the
restaurant opened its doors to the public the
next morning.
The King had surely arrived and hordes of
people had lined up to savour the towns newest avour. Operated by a Motibhai Group
subsidiary, Victus Ltd, the Martintar branch
was the rst outlet introduced into the local
market. Motibhai Group and Burger King Fiji
chairman Kirit Patel said the occasion would
register as a milestone achievement in the
companys history books.
He said choosing Nadi to be the home of the
rst Burger King in the country was also a signicant move by the company.
The opening of the Burger King is a hallmark of events to come, as we believe that in
2017, Nadi will become the third city of our beloved country, he said.
The Nadi township is continuing to experience a population growth and we are deter-

Its good that society partakes and actually gives these kids who are kids of Fiji a
normal life.
Whole families come to Burger King and
have their meals here, and so for our kids to
also come out and be part of the opening, it
kind of represents them also being part of
that family meal.
Loloma Homes Vaciseva Waqa said seeing the childrens smiling faces brought a
renewed sense of duty.
We are so blessed and privileged to be
invited to the opening of this Burger King
restaurant, she said.
We thank Mr (Kirit) Patel and his wonderful team for thinking of us.
We thank them for inviting us out from
our usual environment and getting the kids
to this wonderful and beautiful restaurant.
We are also truly grateful to the company
for donating $2501 to our home.
Nadi Centre for Special Education head
teacher Shiromani Felix said their students
had a wonderful experience.

GOVERNMENT has labelled the alleged act by teachers in a North school
to bump up the mark of a student during internal exams a scam.
The Minister for Education, Heritage
and Arts, Dr Mahendra Reddy made
this comment during his chief guest
address at the Vunidawa Sanatan Primary School reunion celebration yesterday .
He was speaking in relation to an alleged suicide by a student in Labasa
early this week following the release of
the Year 13 results, where he had failed
to meet the passing mark.
The case in Labasa. He dropped out
in Form six to do sugarcane farming
and came back in Form 7 and teachers bumped up the marks and made the
student the dux.
I was there during the prize-giving
ceremony. And the student told the
journalist that I am scared that I will
not pass my external exams, I might
fail Form 7 exams; the student admitted, and when the actual standardised

student could not accept the mark, because someone there in the school system bumped up the mark and declared
the student the dux.
This is the kind of scam we have in
our school system that we need to eradicate ladies and gentlemen.
He added that they were yet to nd
out the actual cause of the incident.
Mr Reddy said initiatives would be
implemented to address the prevention
of incidents such as this.
The Government is xing this, the
Government is xing the system. At
the moment our focus is on the parents,
the difculty, the pain they are going
through. Once this is over, we want to
look at what really transpired and how
all this could have been avoided.
We are doing all we can to curb suicide in the country.
We are saddened by the loss of the
child, unfortunately he probably did
not share with too many people to identify the intention he had, who would
have helped him get out of that danger
which was unfortunate.
