New web-based tool

lets citizens report
non-emergency issues
to local government
By ZANE CLARK
The Sun
Mt. Laurel is looking to move
forward with a new reporting tool
through which citizens can report non-emergency issues to the
township.
Known as SeeClickFix, the
tool is a web-based program that
will allow citizens to report and
communicate
non-emergency
neighborhood issues to the local
government through the townships website or a free smartphone application.
Township manager Maureen
Mitchell said the new program
came about as the townships current system for handling reports
such as work orders and deceased
animal pickups is outdated.
With the SeeClickFix program,
Mitchell said work orders will be
placed on a digital map to help
employees have a better sense of
where the problems are geographically and to let employees

THE MT. LAUREL SUN MARCH 915, 2016

in our opinion

Hello, spring, are you here yet?

Our moods, our businesses, our livelihoods depend on your arrival
arch 20. Eleven more days. It
cant come soon enough. Officially, thats the start of
spring. Whether Mother Nature
agrees, though, is anyones guess at
this point. Early forecasts show she
will be good to us, but how much can
we actually rely on forecasts?
Spring is what we all need. We need
a nice stroll downtown, in the park or
on the boardwalk to reinvigorate us, to
get us out of the doldrum into which
winter plunges us every year, no matter how mild or extreme it is.
We got lucky this winter, with just
one major snowstorm that crippled us
for a week or so. Its been bitter cold at
times, too, as any winter is, and we got
a sprinkling of wet weather last week.

Your thoughts
What are you most looking forward to this
spring? While you are out and about
enjoying what hopefully will be beautiful
weather, send us the photos you take
along the way, and well be happy to share
them with the rest of the town.

But, hey, its in the 70s this week!

No matter how bad it is, winter affects all of our moods, and it affects
our bottom lines, too.
Well most likely be paying more in
taxes, in some way, at some level, for
pothole repairs and salt purchases.
Snow and cold weather affect local
businesses as well, especially retail
shops. Bad weather keeps patrons in-

side. The arrival of spring weather on

a consistent basis will hopefully turn
that around, and quickly.
Cold weather keeps people in the
mindset of no end in sight, and prevents many from taking day trips to
our states wonderful good-weather
spots, or from planning future trips, as
well.
In a little more than 60 days, the official start of the summer beach season
will be here. Does that even sound
right?
The good news is that it started to
warm up this week. Spring really does
look like its right around the corner.
Lets hope Mother Nature cooperates
and doesnt reverse the tide back to
winter. Please spare us!

Crime numbers decrease for third straight year

Database system implemented in 2013 plays critical role in lowering of township crime rates
By SEAN LAJOIE and ZANE CLARK
The Sun
For the third consecutive year, the level
of crime in Mt. Laurel has decreased.
According to the New Jersey State Polices Uniform Crime Report, the overall
level of crimes reported in Mt. Laurel for
2015 dropped 13.4 percent compared to
2014.
In 2015, Mt. Laurel police saw 666 crimes
reported, compared to 769 in 2014 and 859
in 2013.
Much of the drop between 2014 and 2015
can be attributed to the same factor that
caused the drop between 2013 and 2014 a
significant decrease in the number of burglaries and thefts.
For 2015, the number of total burglaries
reported in Mt. Laurel was down 40.4 percent, with a drop from 114 reported in 2014
to 68 in 2015. For 2015, the number of total

thefts in Mt. Laurel was down 14.6 percent,

with a drop from 514 reported in 2014 to 439
in 2015.
Those figures are keeping in line with
the decrease in the number of burglaries
and thefts the township saw between 2013
and 2014, which at that time saw total burglaries drop 24.5 percent and total thefts
drop 7.9 percent.
When asked about the decrease in burglaries and thefts over the past several
years, Lt. Stephen Riedener of the Mt. Laurel Police Department pointed to a database system adopted by the department in
October 2013. The system allows Mt. Laurel Police to track the transactions of secondhand goods in the township. It is also
used by several police departments in surrounding municipalities.
Many thefts and burglaries result in the
selling of the stolen items in other towns,
so cooperation and effective communica-

tion among all departments in the area is

critical to having any chance of catching
these criminals.
Our detective bureau is constantly networking with other departments in our region, talking and sharing info about tactics
and strategies to keep crime down,
Riedener said.
The database tracks the secondhand
dealers or pawnshops where criminals
might go to sell stolen items, and then officers are able to later search the database
for items matching those reported stolen to
the authorities.
(The database) continues to be a real
big help, Riedener said. It gives detectives solid leads and evidence against people, deterring them from selling in the
area.
Riedener credited the data driven applease see VIOLENT, page 15

deceased animal near Mt. Laurel
Road and Forrest Court. The citizen said they were at an address
on Forrest Court, which is under
Mt. Laurels responsibility, when
in fact the animal was actually on
Mt. Laurel Road, which is a county road.
According to Mitchell, the program will also send an email to
anyone who reports an issue and
then send another email to that
person when the issue has been
resolved. Mitchell said this will
help cut down on complaints
from residents who in the past
have said issues went unresolved
for inordinate amounts of time.
It will give them a notification
and feedback to say we closed
your issue, Mitchell said.
Mitchell said the system will
also allow the township to better
measure how personnel are responding to issues and the time it

takes them to handle problems.

Mitchell said the township
would be able to set what departments receive certain reports, so
if there were to be a deceased animal on a road, the township could
set it so both the public works department and police department
were made aware.
Mitchell also said the township
could even set the program in
such a way that if an issue were
sent to the township and it was
not the townships responsibility,
the program could send back information relating to the proper
agency or government body
where residents should report the
issue.
Mitchell said the smartphone
application would have the option
to automatically gain someones
position in the township when reporting a problem if they have
that feature enabled on their device, and if they dont have that
feature enabled, or the person has
left the area, they can also psychically enter an address.

proach for the success of the departments anti-crime efforts, as
it is constantly looking for the
best place to station officers to
prevent thefts.
Specifically in our commercial areas, as that is where most of
our crime comes from, Riedener
said.
Regarding the other areas of
crime cataloged by the report for
2015, Mt. Laurel saw little change.
Mt. Laurel had 33 violent
crimes reported in 2015, a slight
uptick from the 28 violent crimes
reported in 2014. The number of
reported robberies also increased
slightly, from 12 in 2014 to 13 in
2015.

There were also 18 motor vehicles stolen in Mt. Laurel in 2015

compared to 16 in 2014.
