Matthew Mercers latest full-length album Salvo is a return to beatmaking
after last years ambient release, Supernatant. While he has explored
rhythmic music in the past, starting with the cut-up techno of his first two
singlesSecrets I & II, Salvo is a different animal.
Whether in the glitchy stride of opener Preparedness, the spry electrotechno crossover of Hotwired, or the improvised sputter of When
Suddenly, Salvos emphasis is on layered, complex beats and finely tuned
details. While there are deliberate nods to the dancefloor, Salvo is more of
a lateral move rather than a direct return to dance music.

Mercers solo albums Supernatant (2015) and Pianissimo Possibile

(2011) left his four minimal techno EPs and 12 singles of the 00s
behind, focusing on dense, minimal drones, deconstructed piano
recordings and electronics. He has spent recent years scoring films,
including the documentary feature Vintage Tomorrows (2016).Aside
from his solo releases and remixing work for various artists (Sarah
Nixey, Ladytron among them), Mercer is one half of both electronic pop
